I really love the look of the new XC40! When you add the Inscription trim to the vehicle with out the optional lava, it takes on very smart look. Volvo is always in a class of it's own.
absolutely, working for the company, my only complaint is that the 40 doesn't have the option for ventilated seats, and the Advanced package doesn't come with the Heads-up display... but the 40 is intended to be less expensive

Great content! Can you make a similar type of comparison between the v90 and the new v60? I think that would be great to see since the new v60 has grown so much in size and seems to have a more practical boot than the v90!

Thank you so much guys! This actually was quite an issue for me since I actually planned an XC60 but then accidentally decided to test drive a xc40 and that got me truly confused.

After 28 blissful Saab years, I reluctantly moved across to Volvo. I'm a convert and bought a second hand V40 with lots of bells and whistles. Totally love it. Looking forward to upgrading to a hybrid XC40 at some point. Volvo are making the cars that Saab would have produced if they'd not been murdered by General Motors
Love the exterior look, size, & wheels of XC40 and the interior of XC60, combine them and you'll get the ultimate small SUV/crossover

Just ordered a fully loaded XC60 T6 R-Design in white with 22" rims. It's a true beauty. As far as exterior and interior are concerend, X3, Q5 and GLC do not even come close. Can't wait to get it in 3-4 months.
Rear cargo divider in XC40 can be flipped and stored under the floor space when needed

Back in 2016 I was looking at a BMW M4 CP or Mercedes C63S Coupe. On paper the well spec'd beemer was the cheaper car, but due to high PCP interest and "tighter than a ducks butt" discounts the equally well spec'd Merc (for me) worked out cheaper per month even though the list price was almost £8K more!

Just purchased an XC60 Momentum, the 2018.5 version has full digital display and front parking sensors as standard now!
We’ve just bought an XC60 momentum 2018 used from Volvo. Haven’t picked it up just yet but it’s got the full digital dash and the front parking sensors too as yours does which is great! How are you liking yours after 3 years??
I completely agree with the comparison concept. Here in Sweden price differences between new Volvo models are disappearingly small. I am talking about new XC60, XC40, new V60 and even V90, all with similar engines and transmissions. And when the price differences are not bigger than a price of a good racing bicycle, then the choice of a car can become a headache.

XC40 is where my money will go since I don't need a bigger car for now...
Would be great if rear lights on all Volvo cars are modernised. Some more sporty shape would make Volvo cars looking sharp not just from front view.
Volvo is killing the game right now. Extremely desirable vehicles. Nevermind they're the safest vehicles on the road in their respective classes.

We bought the XC60 inscription over the xc40. Tough choice but the deal on the xc60 was actually better value.
Sorry to bother you when dealing do you have any advice which is best if I'm thinking of getting a car and keeping it for like 3-4 years a PCP or HP deal it's hard to know especially when it's a salesman trying to push one on you I want the best deal for ME

BUT the xc40 you’re showing has paddle shifters, nappa leather, apple carplay etc. The xc60 is still more expensive either way, if you wanted any of those options, even while being the older model.

I’m getting the XC40. It looks nicer and it’s more sporty looking. Cheaper overall to buy. XC60 is a great car but I prefer something smaller.

My grandpa just bought the XC60 and my grandma bought a XC40 - they’re really happy with both!
But personally, I prefer the XC60 inscription.
You guys are so lucky. Even the XC40 basic trim costs £62K here in India. With deposit of £6K and £250 monthly price, all I could get was a Ford EcoSport.
I’d choose the xc40-Electric. Its a fare size, ALOT more premium than a german and just a lovely, headturning car!
Or an xc90 t8 when Im needing a bigger car

I recently purchased the XC40 R design trading in a XC90. Couldn’t be happier! This car is super fun to drive.
I have a 2015 previous gen xc60, thinking to switch to the new one, but now i dont know if even the xc40 would be enough. I use it for long distance and have a suzuki vitara for the city. Is the xc40 stable and quite on speed?
Tsparkdriver yes it is. Super responsive and quiet.

Difference between XC40 an XC60 with same trim option (Momentum) and same engine (190 hp petrol) is about EUR 7000 / GBP 6200.
You could use the savings to add a few options to the XC60, but that would take it over the £40k list price threshold thus adding around £300 per yr road VED. Just shows how times change tho and why not to buy a newly launched car - 18mths on and discounts around £3500 mark on the car tested.

If I was buying a Volvo XC60 then I would choose the Inscription Pro as I don't particularly like entry level Models
Correct me if I am wrong: A bigger rim does not necessarily mean a bigger wheel, if the tire ratio goes say from 55 to 50. Semantics, calling a rim a wheel?

he is comparing the base model xc60, to the fully loaded xc40. Its not a fair fight/
price. A full loaded 3series can be close to $60k and you can get a base model 5series in the mid $50k
Start adding some of the options to that xc60 that the xc40 has and the price is skyrocketing i.e. Add 12 inch digital display, navigation, 20 inch wheel, upgrade sound system, heads up display, bird eyes view camera and etc and that xc60 is almost additional $20k

Good day I'm a totally manual transmission driver and don't mind high performance desils I'm totally sold on both the v60 and xc60 but I don't like how they are limited to 190bph for manuals when auto's go all the way up to 367 please assist me if possible in buying preferably the v60 at 300 plus bhp with manual transmission cheers
I really like to looks of the XC40, especially the front with the slanted grill and simpler hood.
However it's not that big of a difference, from practicality standpoint the XC60 is definitely the better buy.

can you address the car throttle lag too? It has been one of the major issue for car manufacturer to safe more fuel and sacrifice their performance. For example, audi S4 has alot of throttle lag to compensate for more fuel efficiency.
I agree with all your review. I ended up buying the XC60 because of space and overall a better value, one thing I need to add, the XC60 you compared to the XC40 is absolute "Fugly" My XC60 has the R-type package and looks a lot like the XC40 you showed, and looks amazingly cool. one thing I noticed as well is that with the longer wheelbase mine has noticeable less roll. but either SUV would make a great choice.

Another point to consider which I think you should add to the reviews is, on cars in this price bracket, is the point at which you go over the 40k list & get stung for the extra £320 per year ved.
Do the XC60 Inscription D5 AWD vs Mercedes GLC 250d 4Matic
Hi, I'm testing a XC40 (T4) a few days and I find the engine noise more like one from a diesel car. I am considering getting the T5 but I am concerned that the noise will just be 'louder' in the same diesel-like type of sound. I know XC40 is not a sports car and I shouldn't expect that sort of experience. But I thought that a 190hp petrol car of that money would either be very quiet or sound a bit sporty. Am I alone on this thought? Anyone with a T5 that can comment on the engine noise? Thanks
Because of the upright seating in the back of the XC 40 I bought a Mini Countryman.
Just got back from buying an xc60 from Volvo Stockport. Went in to buy an xc40 but with the massive 10k discount on the 60 and a 4 moth waiting list, it was a no brainer to get the premium xc60.
XC40 is same priced as XC60 in Finland, so XC60 is better option for us Finnish
