Toyota RAV4 VS Volvo XC40. AWD Snow And Hill Test. Surprise Contender At The End. Who Is The Winner?

- In this video, we will compare the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Adventure (Trail) with the 2020 Volvo XC40 T5 Inscription. First, we will do the AWD demonstration of both vehicles in the snow. And then we will perform the hill test.
Both tests were performed at different times but in the same location. Both SUVs have All Season Tires. Toyota RAV4 faced a more challenging environment due to the larger amount of snow. While Volvo XC40 had to deal with less snow.
Even though Toyota RAV4 and Volvo XC40 have slightly different AWD systems, in our opinion, both vehicles showed good results and are very capable of dealing with snowy conditions.

This demonstration speaks for itself: no matter how much you pay for your spectacular SUV, all you need are good winter tires...
Yup, the only thing that actually has drastically gone upwards in regular cars in the last 15 years or so is comfort xD. If you drive a lot it might be worth the extra cost to buy a 2020 SUV, cause its so comfy, other than that, not much difference if you can drive.

And use the accelerator properly. If you floor it, this happens even with proper winter tires.
I had a VOlvo xc40 in 2018/2019 in Seattle. I enjoyed so much to drive on the snow with that beautiful small beast. I miss her so much!

Winter tires are clearly needed in both cars.
Not a fair test. For the hill test, the conditions were too different with more snow on the ground when testing the RAV4 and less snow for the Volvo. The black tarmac is clearly visible when the Volvo was tested. This means the Volvo's tire has contact the with tarmac, not snow.
Yes, there was more snow when the RAV4 was tested. I did mention this in the video and in the description. We were not able to test both vehicles at the same time. Nevertheless, it was interesting to see how vehicles behave in such conditions.

Given different vehicles with similar power to wheel programming characteristics, traction becomes more the size of the contact patch between tire and ground, along with coefficient of friction each tire provides. Can't really fault one make or the other here. I had a Jeep Wrangler that, with lousy tires slid everywhere, while my RWD sedan with snow tires drove like a champ.
I must say, you were way too agressive with the Rav4 on the hill comparaired to the volvo.... and I notice that there is much more snow during the Rav4 trial compared to the Volvo testing... too bad they were not done on the same day... My vote is the Rav4...
You are right, vehicles were tested in slightly different environments due to us not being able to test them at the same time. Even though the RAV4 did not get on top of the hill, it's AWD system showed to be very capable and it almost made it to the top with more snow on the ground. Had there been less snow I am sure it would have made it as well.
@@MorozovAutomotive It's very clear, when you tried with the RAV 4 there was snow up the bottom are of the bumper. Would be very interesting to performance other kind of test.

Wow! My husband and I were looking at getting a 2023 Toyota Rav4 Woodland Edition, but after watching this video and being a an owner of a 2007 Volvo s40 I am convinced the XC40 is the best choice for us since we live in VT. My mind is blown, but I knew the Volvo would exceed in its natural environment. With just all season on its amazing, imagine the grip you would have if you had a nice set of winters... you could go anywhere.
The snow was thicker when the Rav 4 was tested.
Tires matter much more than drive train configuration. Any 2WD car, FWD or RWD, could have got up that hill with proper winter tires. I say that as a current XC40 owner myself, so I'm not defending the Rav4 here. But I've been very pleased with the AWD performance of my XC40 do far as well.
But the factory Perellis they put on these SUVs are bad, mine were disintegrating only 15k miles into ownership and they were very loud on the road. I replaced the factory 20" wheels with 18" for a better and quieter ride as well.

True but Rav4 hybrid has weak awd system- bc its rear wheels are powered by only 54hp electric motor compared to mechanical awd. No comparison!
I got an XC 40 and as time goes by I am more and more convinced it was a great choice!

this video clearly shows how extremely important it is to have quality winter tyres and how extremely bad tyres can ruin the reputation of even such a high quality car as the RAV4

Drivetrains of both are very similar but RAV4 has not just all-season but low resistance tires, and that's what explains the difference.
Winter tires FTW!
I am no expert on tires, but you can drive all year round with all season tires where it’s not snowing. If it snows in your area, winter tires are a must. The way I do it, is that I drive for 3 seasons with all season tires, but when the winter is coming, I switch to Winter Tires. I have a front wheel drive car with underpowered engine which makes barely 130 horsepower paired with a CVT transmission. This is my second car, and I don’t really enjoy it very much. It is very slow. Since the engine is underpowered, the car barely if not at all climbs up the hill. You have to have momentum or you’re screwed when driving in the snow. Any car will fair better with winter tires on. All season or summer tires are junk in the snow. I couldn’t drive any faster than 20 MPH on a straight road with them on during a snowstorm.
Is it just me or does the snow look visually deeper when the RAV-4 attempted to get up the hill, compared to when the Volvo tried, with less snow and tire tracks already carved in

Yes, you are right. There was more snow when the RAV4 was driven. I did mention this in the video and in the description. Unfortunately we couldn't test both vehicles at the same time. Nevertheless, it was interesting to see how both vehicles behave in such conditions.
I don’t know why he didn’t use snow mode in the rav4 when starting from a stop. RAV4 also has differential lock. My 2015 rav4 has it

ive got 2005 rav4, and its a beast in winter, got out 2 cars from snow allready
На тесте Рав4 на подъёме много снега, на тесте Вольво уже мало снега. Разное покрытие, разная температура - разный результат. Так что тесты не объективные :)
+ в первом же тесте рав без раскачки стартанул. в вольво раскачка была. ощущение что видео и тест делали люди с предвзятым мнением к одной из моделей
Все намного проще, во время заезда РАВ4 снега было значительно больше. Съемки велись в разное время. Об этом написано в описании к видео.
Я тестировал и то и другое. Они одинаковые. Лучшим считаю Субару. В США каждый русский механик подтвердит мои слова.
Из лёгких траков, лучшими считаются Шевроле (GMC).

Which winter tyres would you recommend?
I'm pretty sure the Haldex system in the Volvo can send much more than 50% to the rear if needed..... I think its theoretically 100%... at least up to a certain torque number.
Moral of the story is you need winter tires
I had the Toyota RAV 4 3 Door for several years here in Germany and that Car was Perfect
You just floored rav4 straight up of course it will just dig from where it stands unlike the way the driver did with volvo. It really depends on how you drive the vehicle. I like both vehicles but the way it was tested is two totally different way
That wasn’t the driver that’s Volvos dynamic stability control working with the awd system it uses the brakes to mitigate wheel spin as u can see in the video

the driver is a big part of the equation. knowing how to drive in snow might benefit you unlike the video poster who clearly doesnt know.

Michelin X-ICE tires turn my front wheel drive vehicles into tanks in the snow. I have gone up hills where AWD vehicles with all season tires were spinning. Put those on these two and you will have a great winter vehicle.

I was wondering how much it helps. Do you use it only at slower speeds? To switch drive modes if road conditions change--need to be at a full stop?

The only thing the really demonstrates is that real winter tires, meant for ice traction will improve acceleration, steering and stopping.

Both vehicles had all season tires. Conditions were slightly different. When we filmed the RAV4 there was more snow on the ground. Volvo had an advantage.

This test makes no sense without winter tires. Also test performed not on same condition.
The RAV4 was driving in snow and the Volvo was driving on ice created by the RAV4 spinning its wheels to melt the snow and compact it hard.
how you can test suv at snow without winter tires? Rav4 AWD with winter tires it's great daily vehicle, I'am not saying ofroad monster, I have previous rav4(XA40) for me enough for daily winter usage at Ukraine(Rav4 USA version XLE awd)
the winner is always the tire, with proper tires you always get on top, with wrong tires... no matter the car and mostly, with wrong tires you fail to stop, which is much worse than failing to reach the top ;)

Notice the XC40 followed almost exactly the same track as the RAV4. After the RAV4 'dugged' out or melted so much soft snow on the top layer, the XC40's tires certainly can reach much closer to the solid ground patch underneath now with fewer snow.
Not a scientific /logical comparison unless u try again on another comparable slope with a similar fresh patch of snow but test the 2 cars in REVERSE order.
Don't compare Toyota to any vehicle, it's been the best car in the world for 40 years we know that he had a lot of cars of different brands.
And why did you NOT use the "snow" setting on the RAV4? Isn't this what you are supposed to use when you are on snow?

It would be interesting to see somebody who has any skill in off-road driving. If there were more snow, your cars would stay there until spring ;-). Flooring is by no means the way to deal with mud or snow.
All four wheel drive vehicles for road use distribute the power to alternative wheels when needed, if the rear wheels were driven equaly the vehicle would not go round corners as in a locked differential.

for some reason your xc40 looks fantastic but when i go to see them locally i don't like the way they look, i can't put my finger on it but yours just looks better.

Did you try to say that it's more important to drive with winter-tires on non-SUV car than with all-season tires on SUV for snowy roads ?
If so, you had better just compare with driving on SUV with all-season tires and non-SUV with winter-tires.
The conditions for comparing Toyota and VOLVO SUVs are too different, and this just looks like you are dissing Toyota.
Our goal was to see how AWD systems perform/behave in both vehicles. From our perspectives they are pretty similar. Then we decided to have some fun by starting on the hill. Tests were done at different times but at the same location. We did not intend to discredit the RAV4. I did mention that there is more snow when the RAV4 was driving in the video itself and in the description. The XC40 had an advantage during the hill start because there was less snow.
Again, we were curious to see how vehicles behave in these conditions.
You can visibly see that the Volvo have a much more reactive all-wheel-drive system. The rav4 was slipping more before redirecting power to another wheel. The Volvo was sending power to all the wheels instantly, almost like a permanent all-wheel-drive.
OMG. look at the drivers. It seems RAV 4 driver is a new driver and XC 40 is an experienced off-road driver. Let's see how they turned their wheels when driving up the hill.

Winter tires are a must
Keep a jug of cat litter in the cargo space. Works better than sand to get traction in snow or ice. Toss some around the wheels the gritty substance let’s you get great traction and on your way again
With the RAV4 clearly there was way more snow and hill looked steeper.. With Volvo it was able to get up the hill because there wasn't much snow under the tires and it was able to remove snow underneath and get surface traction. Unfortunately this is not a fair test..
The hill is the same. But you are right, there was less snow when Volvo was filmed. Unfortunately we were unable to test both vehicles at the same time. I did mention in the description that RAV4 would have made it as well if it had the same amount of snow to deal with. This video shows how vehicles behave in different winter conditions in similar but not exactly the same environment.

IMHO 4 season tires are always the loser. They are bad in summer and bad in winter. Always use appropriate tires for the season. Just my two cents. 😉

Volvo is slightly heavier.
You see no black tops at all when testing RAV4. You see a lot of black tops revealed when testing XC40 and Acura so both of them got occasional contact with the ground, than just snow/ice.
and at 3:35 snow was alot thicker than when the volvo was filmed
You are exactly right. Tests were done at different times. RAV4 had to deal with a lot more snow. Volvo and Acura had a big advantage because there was less snow.

Nope, the driver did not floor the RAV4 immediately. You can see it if you watch the video again. The difference is there was more snow when the RAV4 was filmed. We did say it in the video and in the description to the video.
