Of course that's only what they claim the car can do in the official test, during which the ICE rarely kicks in, not what it'll be like in real everyday driving. Still the 60mpg he says he got in the video is pretty good for a heavy car with 250hp.

      141 miles x 1,609 km (km in a mile) = 226.869 km
226.869 divided by 4.546 litres (litres in a BRITISH gallon since carwow is obviously a British channel) = 49.9 km in one litre
And now all you have to do is simply divide 100 km by 49.9 (the amount of kilometres this car drives in one litre) and you get 2 litres per 100 km

I have for couple of years the first ever real life PHEV, the Volvo V60 PHEV : 2,4 liter, 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel 215hp driving the front + 70hp electric motor driving the rear. This is the best car I ever had! The real life pure electric mode gives me ca 35km range, which is enough to cover my work comute and moving around the town. Some weeks I don't even use the diesel engine at all. On the other hand I love to switch to sport mode to feel the 285hp time to time :-) My long term average is 4,8 l/100km. The car has its own charger on board, all you need is a electric socket, but I have installed a wall box in my garrage. I can hardly imagine for what I can replace this rocket. Only Mercedes is making diesel phew now.

Many thanks for the review. I have got one now, nearly new, my first car with any screen on the dashboard!. The challenges I find are: it is wider than my 740 DL Volvo which I have had for 30 years! The phone connection to display Waze maps on the screen doesn't always work. The Speech command is very varied at finding what I ask for, e.g. if I ask for Radio4 - it can't find it. The camera view for reversing is misleading - looks like much more space behind than there really is but I expect I will learn how to interpret that. But I will get the hang of it having only had it for 6 days.

I'd love to see them make plug in hybrids with battery size options.
Like a 20 mile, 40 mile, and 60 mile. I think that would help with sales and they could charge a premium for it to make money while satisfying demand.
And sane goes for their pure electric models. Having increments of 34% increases. Like a 250 range model and 335 range. Some people are willing to pay the additional $10,000-$15,000 for additional range.

Volvo xc40 is Volvo's CMA platform. It's Volvo's Concept 40.1 The designer is Thomas Ingenlath, a German who once worked with VW/Audi. Volvo's CMA platform share some parts with their SPA platforms. Some Geely models will share this platform but it is a Volvo platform. This is to clarify for those mistaken people who keep calling Volvo "Chinese."
Cars today are more international than ever. Geely owns 10 percent of Mercedes Benz. It doesn't make Mercedes Chinese. Jaguar is owned by Tata. It doesn't make Jaguars Indian cars. And even Bentley has VW parts in it, since the great British company is owned by VW. And Chrysler is owned by Fiat. And I don't hear anyone calling Chrysler Italian cars.
I've read nothing that points to Volvo's quality being any worse than it was under Ford or when Volvo was independent. In fact, the quality has improved and the designs have improved. The cars are as crashworthy as they always have been. Things can change but now Volvo is a Swedish company owned by a Chinese company and the cars are European engineered and designed. So are Polestar who use the same engineers and designers as Volvo.

This hybrid is great for short journeys but begs the question why you'd spend 41k on one, especially when you must layer the higher VED as its more than 40k. For distance driving, 31mpg is dreadful and even an AM Vanquish V12 can do that at a cruise.

You can't compare the "starting from" prices for petrol vs. hybrid models! Petrol models comes here in Austria from Basic trim, over Momentum and Momentum Pro to R-Design and Inscription. The hybrid model now (for model year 2021) starts at the R-Design trim. So it's comparing apples to oranges.
The price difference between a good equipped T4 FWD 190 hp and the similar equipped T5 twin engine 262 hp is about 1700 Euro. That's just the difference of the power levels.
And yes, I ordered the T5 twin engine already and nearly can't wait for delivery... ;-)

A similar performance Diesel is even more expensive than the hybrid and returns similar fuel savings. Yet people buy lots of Diesels don't they? If you're going to put a lot of miles on the car it pays off.
But the real reason why manufacturers are making these hybrid options is to future proof their model range. Give it some 10 years and ICE only vehicles will be priced out of the market via emissions tax, 20 years they'll be banned from sale outright.

    • @bentrevallion7159

@@BigUriel hybrids will be classed in the same category though as ICE wont they? I dont think hybrids will get away with much tbh basically negating paying an extra 10 grand for one. Or will the tax band be a lot cheaper?
