    The XC40 is literally one of the most beautiful looking cars I have ever seen. Volvo will ALWAYS be my favorite car company when it comes to design. Their cars are sleek, simple and sharp. Totally a head turner without even trying. The XC40 is my dream mom car, hands down.

      I agree those volvos are stunning looking cars my favourite volvo has to be the xc40, then s90 or v90, the two best suvs in my opinion are the kia sportage and volvo xc40 great family suvs but not too big just perfect for family's of 4 or 5 people 👌👍

    I’ve owned an Evoque and and early new model XC60. Had to dispose of the Volvo as the various safety features drove me mad. Slamming brakes on for no apparent reason, constant binging and buzzers going off and I couldn’t get on with the touch screen. My understanding is this system is common to XC40. This was one of the first cars so maybe they’ve sorted the software but mine went back to Volvo a number of times without resolution. The Evoque was reliable (despite all the comments on here) and my only criticism was the gearbox which they have now improved fitting the 8 speed ZF box. I own a pretty new Range Rover and bought that with some trepidation but to date it’s been great in terms of reliability. Just ordered a new Evoque for my wife. You do pay a premium but I really like the quality of the interiors and the issue I had had put me off Volvo for life. When I bought the Volvo I wanted something other than a Range Rover as everyone had one around here. I understand why now.

      always the same, idiots slating the Range Rover yet it's still in production after all these DECADES and still an extremely popular car despite the price of it. That tells you all you need to know. I have a Jag XF and I get the same nonsense, mostly from people who have never even sat in one. That's been the same for all the years I have had it, completely reliable and fantastic to drive. Prior to that I had a Volvo S60 for several years, very reliable too although it was an older model without all the safety gadgetry that nobody asked for, but very boring to drive.

    The Volvo XC40 anytime ofc - the Range is much MUCH too expensive (extremely over prized) and it just doesn't show good quality for the price. And I can't understand the critics about the climate control being in the Volvo's XC40 central display. I did set the temperatures in my XC40 when I get it from the dealer, set all to automatics and then I NEVER have to change them again... for years. It just works brilliantly. Why should I change it all the time? Seriously, that's just stupid.

    This review seemed a bit biased from the get go, he just ignored the flaws of the Evoque, eg, the cheap looking sets, slow infotainment, less practical, harder suspension...it was too obvious what car would win. Why bother making these "comparison videos" at all? just make a huge commercial for the evoque and that's it.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Clavinovaman
      @Clavinovaman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You haven't driven a Telsa then? It always makes me giggle when people talk of uniqueness to a particular model or brand, when in reality it is anything but unique. Customers have, to my knowledge, never really complained that they have to turn a knob to turn the aircon up. But manufactures increasingly think that scrolling through menus is a better option. Porsche Macan is full of buttons - brillirant car, many times more sophisticated and brilliant than either the XC40 or Evoque, but you know it will sad day when the Macan is replaced with - no doubt - buttonless interior, replaced with menus and all sorts of things to scroll through to achieve simple things. And its comments like yours that are causing it.
      _Using a rotary knob on the centre console is the easiest way to change the climate control._
      Uniqueness is overplayed. Every single car in, what is in reality, a fluid market, exists uniquely within it.

      Gary j, are you telling me its easier to look down to turn a controller and take your eyes of the road rather then push a button on a steering wheel and say "I'm cold" the volvo puts the heat up or set temperature to 22 as you can with the volvo sensus? Even Audi who own Porsche have moved to screens so I am betting Porsche will follow suit over time. Each to their own i guess but it annoys us owners when an uneducated car reviewer says something is a faff when it clearly is not.

You buy a £6K more expensive Evoque with cash, you will pay less over 3 years than a Volvo as the Evoque holds its value so well. Perfaormace is relative. OBS.: I believe you should have put the cars in an offroad test, also, before giving the final verdict. The Land Rover would stand out, for sure.

Why would you want two setup screens for starters when the Volvo has it all directly infront of you, without the need to take your eyes directly off the road and look down into the centre of the car as in the case of the Land Rover. Why not point out to people you dont have to have the Lava Orange inserts in the interior. Poor standards of journalism, wont be looking at What Car for advice.

    Having all the controls routed through the touchscreen just made me decide against the XC40- It seems like a trivial aggravation until you have to drive something like that. You shouldn’t have to go five menus deep to change the fade or turn the bass down. Also if and when that thing glitches out it causes all sorts of unforeseen problems. My current vehicle, will automatically turn the seat and steering wheel heaters on when it’s cold outside. One day my touchscreen was unresponsive and I had a 100 mile commute! I was sweating like crazy and contorting my body while loosely gripping the wheel ( real safe I know) to keep my ass and hands from burning. Eventually I pulled over ( again in cold weather) and found the fuses... what a pain

      The XC40’s infotainment system doesn’t even have 3 levels of menu…. Nevertheless; have owned one for the last year & I just need physical controls for air conditioning in additional to media. There’s media controls on both the steering wheel & under the screen which is redundant.
      There is voice control but it’s not very reliable.
      I’d also like a portrait orientation for the screen + navigation in the digital dash + a HUD: the screen is too small when showing navigation and I have to glance down and do my left to view directions, which doesn’t feel safe.
      Other than that, it’s far superior to my previous car: Range Rover Evoque.
      XC40 has better rear seat space & boot space and “feels” smaller to drive. It’s not as wide as the evoque and j swear is a smaller car, but manages to have far better interior space

      I've heard others say similar things about the XC40, but I genuinely cannot see it. The rear looks like a Rover 25 facelift from 2003 - even the lettering is positioned the same. That straight line running from the front bonnet to the font doors is just horrible. On many of the 'public review' pages, the most endearing exterior design element seems to be the daytime running lights. All those millions of pounds of investment and the single most interesting element is the daytime running lights? I'm sure the designers are delighted.
      But it is inside where I have the biggest gripe. Ugly, over designed and oversized airvents with a naff looking and sounding infotainment system in the middle. Couple this with undersized buttons and you have a mishmash of design themes that really doesn't gel. Totally get the practicality though.
      The interior design was introduced in the XC90 a few years ago where it looked new and fresh. But you don't see many car companies being influenced with that design. It really hasn't aged well and shrinking it to fit the smaller car, it all seems a little busy and squashed. And those are among the reasons why it won't hold its value as much as the Evoque - its much less fussy, classier, nicer materials, clean design and it will age very well.

    • @bigbadbear2962
      @bigbadbear2962 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigbadbear2962. As far as the dual screen is concerned - try it. Honestly, you may well surprise yourself. Works extremely well. The two rotary buttons are much easier to use than the touch screen in the Volvo. I agree, of course, that 'style' is a personal thing, but the Volvo is a mishmash of different design themes cobbled together rather than a sophisticated design. The front and rear, for example, bear no design correlation whatsoever - the rear looking like a 16 year old Rover 25 facelift. Which are among the reasons why it doesn't hold its value particularly well. The infotainment is a big let down - even the Kia system looks and sounds better. Even at basic spec, the Evoque hi-fi is fantastic.

    Just one example, you say that the Range Rover system is better but confusing at the same time and you need to spend some time adapting 5:32, while on the XC40 it's simpler and easier to get used to.
    We can see that you just made this comparison to favor the Range Rover in denigrating the XC40, and you could see it as you toss the garbage lid to the rear seats 3:27 and if you don't know why you can remove the lid from the waste bin, it's in order to be able to put a bag, or to make it easier to remove it.
    The XC40 is far better in every way than the Range Rover.

      Sorry, but I think you missed the salient points. The Volvo XC40 may be quirky and still looks reasonably fresh, but if you dig a little deeper, it really is the weaker of the two cars being tested. Before, I continue, though, I'd just like to confirm that I've driven both the new Evoque and XC40. Please dont compare the new Evoque to the original - they are two totally different machines. The exterior of the Volvo is a mishmash of shapes, and looks like a facelifted Rover 25 from the rear - even the text is positioned in the same way. The gaping line from the bonnet to the doors looks plain ugly too (0:35). The Volvo is extremely noisy - both for engine and wind, steering is awful and doesn't offer high quality vegan trim options as the Range Rover does. The leathers, for example, are bog standard - possibly donkey.
      The interior is also a mishmash of shapes and materials with ugly, oversized air vents and nondescript buttons underneath.
      The interior design, itself 4 years old and when launched in the XC90, looked fresh and exciting. But very quickly dated and you'll notice that competitor car companies are not being influenced by the Volvo design - it may be quirky, but lacks deep sophistication. Its the infotainment that really is way out od date, though, looking and sounding naff. Kia's is better. Of all the cars I've driven in the last 5 or 6 years, the XC40s system is, by far, the worst. Not to mention that it doesn't hold its value particularly well (potentially due to a number of the issues I highlight above), service costs are higher too... I think that the reviewer was very generous to the XC40. If you after something quirky, it is still a reasonable choice. But if you want something with a much deeper sophistication or engineering excellence you have to looks elsewhere, so I'm afraid based on my perceptions of both cars, the reviewer was extremely generous to the Volvo. Now, you may well disagree with me, but 'the market' tends to agree as residual values are much lower - you can buy a £7K more expensive Evoque than the Volvo cash and in 3 years, you'll have lost less money with the Evoque.

      So, I'm not sure what you mean by predictable that the Evoque wins?

    • @Clavinovaman
      @Clavinovaman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@josingh20 Absolute load of rubbish. Cars do not exist exclusively in rigid pre-defined segments as you suggest. This 'XC60/Velar/F-Pace' is NOT "a segment". That is not how cars exist. In the 1980s, Joshie, you would have been right, when manufacturers had limited models and specs were very neatly priced so that the bigger car took over from where the smaller car's range stopped.
      Since the 1990's, the car market has become increasingly (what I will refer to as) 'class fluid' whereby manufacturers market models with a huge price differentiation between the entry spec to a fully kitted-top spec.
      There will be those, however, who consider that a 'class' is based on size. So you have an X1 class, and an X3 class and an X5 class and cars exclusively fit nicely into those pre-defined sizes.
      I'm sorry Joshie, but that ain't how it works now. The most successful car manufacturers are those who build a portfolio of products that have enormous overlaps (class fluidity)- in the UK, for example, you can spec an X1, X2, X3 and X4 to exactly the same price. The more choice you offer a customer, they greater the opportunity to tailor their choices so that they have, potentially 4-8 possibilities within their budget rather than in 1980's when classes WERE classes and you had 1 choice. "Follow me to the 316i sir..." - if that's what yer budget was.
      Evoque, XC40, Discovery Sport, F-Pace, E-Pace, X1, X2, X3 and X4 all compete, in some form, with the Porche Macan. Not exactly - bang in the middle - every single car has unique positioning and customers can evaluate a car depending on what a customers priority is. All cars, ultimately, exist exclusively in a 'fluid market' and the overlaps between cars and manufacturers vary from model to model.
      But, Joshie, cars do not exist in the way you think. Evoque, Macan, XC40 often compete for that £45K-£50K customer.
      And what car people choose is not, as you may think, about which 'class' it exists but its more about the customer.

    The Volvo XC40 certainly looks nice but it's incredibly tight and cramped inside!

      We have one and it's actually spacious. For a smaller suv it has a lot more room than it's competitors in its size.
