I'm definitely planning on getting this. It actually fits just the set of features I need, for I live in the city and I do a good amount of camping and outdoor activities. The towing capacity is a plus for bringing a trailer. The built in cooler is perfect for tailgating sports games! With hot summers and cold winters where I live the extra temp controls are a big plus.

This honestly might be the perfect next car for me. While the Maverick is definitely more appealing from a financial perspective, nearly everything the Santa Cruz has is what I want; the standard lane keep features are personally the biggest draw. Hopefully these are reliable enough to be worthy used cars in the near future
I'm in the same boat a year later. I like the Maverick on paper but can't bring myself to buy a ford as every single person I know with a ford has problems

What killed the Baja for me, was the tiny bed. If they had done a standard cab with no back seat and a longer bed, I probably would have bought one.

I just picked my Santa Cruz Saturday night! Love this vehicle! I ordered it two months ago and every dealership I went to said they can't keep them in. The minute they come in, they are sold out. Love, love, love this vehicle! Fun to drive, lots of gadgets to play with and great mileage!
Wifey and i saw a black one at Costco today here in Utah. People were literally talking pictures of it! I thought it looked awesome!! Get me one too😉

@@aquariuslady777 You say that, but when I pulled into the dealership Saturday, a retired couple had just purchased the Santa Cruz I was considering. I'm 53 and promptly walked in and put my order in for one. 45 to 90 day wait. They are selling units before they are unloaded off the truck.

I currently drive a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport, which I’ll love but cannot wait to get a Santa Cruz. Love the open bed concept that you don’t have to worry about folding the rear seat down to put a bike in the back nor do you have to worry about getting the interior dirty. Business in the front, party in the back .❤️❤️❤️

I just realized something: these small Pick-ups like the Santa Cruz and the Maverick could very well come to Europe too. They're just as large and capable as Europeans need a truck to be when they don't want a straight up BOF Pick-up truck. They're smaller than the small Pick-up trucks we have here in Europe (the Toyota Hilux, the Isuzu D-Max, the Nissan Navara and the Ford Ranger, all of which are about 5.3m or 208.67in. in length) and they are more versatile than the cars on which they're based (the Tucson and the Escape/Kuga, that is - mind you, the Tucson and the Kuga come to Europe too) in the sense that the cargo room is larger and it can accept larger cargo or it can accept more forms of cargo! They're brilliant!
Please Hyundai and Ford, bring these cars in Europe, they're the perfect inbetweeners to normal cars, crossovers and BOF Pick-ups!

Pick up trucks have an image problem in Europe. However smart pick-ups like this could start turning minds.

I do agree, most truck owners would be totally fine with a truck this size. I would be happy with this. I would only need it to commute and maybe pick up larger items a couple times a year. I like the styling a lot, but you know most truck owners are going to bash it and tell anyone who drives this to get a real truck because that’s what real “men” or some women do. The gas mileage could be a bit better. If it got 30 mpg on the high way, I think it would be just fine. My wife has a 2020 Tucson and it gets about the same mpg as this.

I love this vehicle. Reserved mine the very first time I saw it announced. The small size was its #1 selling point for me.

Yes I can confirm that this was designed in California. I know the guy who designed the Santa Cruz logo on the tailgate. He's actually pretty stoked Hyundai chose his art. He was also integral to getting this into production.
For a simple 400 dollars you can colour such tailgate logo in black!
The Designers at Hyundai are going insane, and I'm here for it. Most car design is too conventional, too traditional.

@@cowboyga1 I don't think so. It's a bit weird, and probably won't age as gracefully as a simpler design would, but it's distintictive and futuristic. But I'm happy someone is doing something different, at least.
I love the headlights because they are nice and low. As SUVs and Crossovers get bigger and bigger, their lights are higher and higher. On top of that, more companies are making their lights brighter and it can be pretty blinding.
I hate how Kia/Hyundai is putting the turn signals in the lower bumper tho. I can never see them

@@Doman9191 the low beams and high beams (not the daytime running lights). They are placed lower on the fender of the car, i stead of up top.

I’m 65 and had suvs my whole life and they were handy .. but at this age and still mountain bike furniture restorer the Santa Cruz gives me a nice modern feel of a car plus a rugged usefulness of a truck and storage in the back .. it’s amazing and fun and it’s going to be a home run .. like I heard my father say to me many of times growing up and did t want to hear …you will find out when you get older Doug lol
I like how Doug always blames the backseat being “too small” or saying “There’s not a lot of room back here” when in reality he’s just too tall to fit inside the majority of backseats in cars like you can’t just move one of the front seats up further when you need more room

Honestly, the design overhaul Hyundai is coming out with is really friggin cool. I thing it's futuristic without being extra. Very cool and distinctive.

I got my 2023 SE AWD in black for 29k in October 2022. Love it. Turns heads on the road and the bed does what you could expect/need as a suburban homeowner. I can park it in a crowded parking lot easily. Cabin front seats are really nice for a Hyundai, a truck, and for a lower trim.
I just bought one 3 hours ago. I got the limited trim in white. This car is so sick I can’t even explain why lol. The more I look at it, the more I fall in love with it.

********* I'll be 1000% honest! The Ridgeline, Maverick, Santa Cruz etc are the only trucks that really appeal to me! Not everyone wants a massive truck, on big tires, with terrible mpg. I live in a suburb, and I just recently picked up a Honda Ridgeline. For me??? It's the perfect truck! It hauls the family, AWD for snow, reliable, and I can carry projects, trash, help friends move etc. I really like the new Maverick, and I plan on looking more into them next year! (My local lot can't keep them in stock)

Doug's height varies but he's on average 6'3" so of course he can reach into the bed with no problem! He can reach into the bed of a full size truck with no problem as well lol.
Just bought one of these as a company vehicle and I love it. It's weird for sure in a great way and I feel like I keep seeing more and more on the road.

If you look carefully at Doug's hairline, you can see the triangles and the hidden Santa Cruz image in profile.
Doug you missed an important feature. The tailgate can be raised about 6 in and locked. The same height as the squares over the rear tires. This allows you to slide a full sheet of plywood into the bed.
I bought one of these a couple months ago and love it. It gets compliments everywhere I go. I have to disagree that it is a niche vehicle.. I think the timing is just right for it.
I just drove it it’s damn nice. Had a locker off-road button which has me curious how good the awd off-road system is. Marl window sticker was at 30k

Just bought one of these on the 15th and it's awesome. Got the SEL model because the base model (SE) doesn't have a lot of the safety features I want and the Limited model is too expensive. I think it's cool but like a lot of these trucks, the bed is too small to really be useful for "a truck guy" but if you won't miss having a trunk, it's really a solid vehicle that sits up high but rides and manuevers like a car. I really was only looking for a vehicle that didn't hurt my back getting in and out of and for the price, this was perfect.

Man I remember Hyundai was like a car brand people bought because they couldn't afford a Toyota, Mazda or Ford but now they're making some big moves. Amazing!
Squished Honda (Hyundai) still is. I was in the market for a car recently and test drove one after seeing/hearing so many people say they are good. They are not, unless you are comparing against Corolla's, Civics, Sentras etc....You get on the highway and as soon as you go over 65mph they feel really unstable, a little crosswind and you really feel it on the steering wheel and need to compensate. I think they've caught up with the low end of other car brands.
Their Genesis brand on the other hand is legitimately nice, not as nice as the cars (Merc S class and the like) many people including Doug compare them to.
The old adage of "you get what you pay for" holds true. Hyundai's are cheap (as in price) for a reason.

I'm definitely interested in getting one of these possibly in a couple years, But I also have a full size truck. This would basically be a more capable every day driver for me since my current car is a 2007 Camry with close to 300,000 miles. Good little car, but the truck bed and the ability to tow a small trailer definitely appeals to someone like me.

That in-bed trunk is the BEST feature of My Father's Ridgeline. I wish my Tacoma, or other pick ups had this! You would NEVER need a bed tool box! My pops has all his tools and more in that in-bed trunk, and still has his FULL OPEN BED!
You might be able to add one if you got the skill (or the money) for a custom one. Depends on what kind of space you got under the bed between the frame
There is something like this, it´s called RAM-Box Cargo-System. And it´s even more praktical, cause you can use them when your bed is full with stuff.

I've seen folks "rigg" these up with light bars and Rhino rims and they actually look pretty cool. The "limited" would be the best option given the AWD and 281hp. I like it and reminds me of Subi's BAJA. Could always get the bed extender bars with the tailgate down.

I appreciate Hyundai’s boldness and willingness to experiment, a quality most modern automakers sorely lack. But I feel like the Santa Cruz is a textbook “jack-of-all-trades, master of none” and won’t convince many buyers. Some of Doug’s words might seem harsh, but I for one agree and it got a laugh out of me.

I like how they didn’t just blindly copy Ford or vice versa. As much as it pains me to say it, it is always nice seeing foreign car makers really “explore” the American car market rather than fill it with mass production cars.
Which really shows just how far they’ve come , Hyundai / Kia are killing it !

Well obviously two cars displayed within a few months of each other aren't going to be copies of each other. It takes at least a year to get to the point of a prototype like this and usually much longer
It’s a blind copy of the Honda Ridgeline. Even has the in-bed trunk.

Great video! I just bought the 2024, and I had no idea about the extra storage in the bed. Thanks for that! I love the vehicle, but I think you kind of missed out on who would love this vehicle. I’m in my mid 50’s, and I dont want another full size pick up. I want something I can throw bags of wood chips into, something that I can easily step up into the bed (bad knees), and something that can Bluetooth/GPS easily. It ticked all the boxes for me. Again, great video!
I really appreciate the video, I know I'm here late. I'm looking into buying one of these. I love the unique design and all of the capabilities. I was surprised that on your comparison chart that you didn't compare it to a Maverick since that what everyone is comparing the Santa Cruz too. I think the only 2 things I am kind of meh about are the fuel economy (no hybrid or better mileage options) and the price is a bit higher than I am use to but I have driven sedans for the last 15 years.

I dig it. Looks like a cool idea for people who hit the the camping spots or head to the lake with kayaks and bicycles, or have jetskis or a small boat. This will get garbage or yard waste to the dump and pick up stuff like your new washer from Lowes. The in-be beer cooler is cool, so this would be a neat beach vehicle with the grill in the back, and you don't have to worry about the hatch plastic or carpet getting damaged, just wash it out when you're done.
Then again, I'd LOVE to have a Subaru Baha. Perhaps I'm eclectic.

I agree it is cool looking, a good idea in theory if you prioritize it’s tiny size above everything else. But most if not all kayaks are going to stick out 4+ feet out the back of this truck-let. Better off tying it to the roof. You can only fit one bike with the cover installed. It’s just too small to be practical. Too expensive also, once you consider the base engine option sucks (according to every review out there) you basically have to spend Ridgeline money. So it really is just all about the size and coolness factor
@@dropusertable For me I want to carry my kayaks on the roof. That’s why I’m excited about the “smaller” trucks coming to market.
What’s the issue with the base engine in these? I personally don’t want a turbo on a 4 banger.
I'm fine if it sells poorly. It will just make mine unique is a sea of sames. I think it looks great and an open bed vs closed hatch is a lifestyle decision, neither is better than the other for everyone.
@@embeaston The issue with the base engine is that auto journalists are stupid, spoiled, and cry when 0-60 is over 7 seconds. I have a Santa Fe with the base engine. It's not fast, but it's just fine. I've never had problems getting up to speed because I'm not a moron and can plan ahead when needed.

It's the same idea as the Subi Baja Turbo I used to own. It was a great cartruck.
Between this and the hybrid Maverick, we're getting close and closer to my dream of a revived Subaru Baja EV.

For the 4 foot bed I was really expecting the rear seat to be better. It's basically a young family SUV...I mean truck.
While I hate some of the design extras, I like the aero look, and I really change those rims... And to be honest, I would imagine my family back when we were younger using one of these to tow our boat when we went vacationing in the summer.
They should have made that rear window full power that goes down.

We saw one on the road. Were curious and looked it up. Were shocked by the look, quality, value and features for the price. A couple days later we went to take a look at one…put deposit on the first one we saw (was the right color and trim level) and bought it the next day. Only $34,000 brand new with most of the same features as this one and the same look. We love it. We weren’t really even in the market for a new vehicle. This replaced a Colorado.
Good review overall. Disagree with the comments about the wheel wells and the interior. Both things sold us. Exterior looks great, interior is clean simple and modern…reminds me of a Tesla. This is exactly what she wanted. A smaller car like vehicle that still has some truck utility. Throw some bags of rocks, mulch, spray it out to clean; hard topped built in tonneau cover. Great design features.
14:41 - the blind spot camera shows exactly what you would expect it to show: some knob in a Beemer insisting that they blast past you before you have a chance to change lanes.

I’m probably late with this comment, but yes Doug that button does engage a locking diff. The center locking diff. You described exactly what a locking diff does, provide perfect 50-50 split. You might think of a locking diff to be in the front or rear, but remember that cars have 3 diffs. You can even see on the button that the X is in the middle in stead of the rear like on a Tacoma for the rear lock. A traditional 4Wd will lock the center diff whenever 4Wd is engaged, but AWD systems won’t. The ability to lock the center diff is actually really good for a vehicle in this class.

I don't think of myself as conservative minded but the first thing I'm going after getting I get a bit of property out in the county is go buy a mid-tier trim F150 or Tacoma TRD Off-Road. I'm going to need something that can get out on the acreage. It's just a matter of practicality not me trying to send out some kind of vibe to those who see it.

Yeah I had to laugh at that "why do you need a step when you can just reach in"? Says the guy who is 6'4" and uses that as a metric to show how small back seats are. For us 5'8" those steps will come in handy.

I was looking to see if someone'd commented something along those lines, even he seemed only just tall enough to reach the floor of the bed without the step. Plus it's not like a step is a very expensive addition for someone that doesn't actually use it.
I absolutely dig this Truck/Sport Adventure vehicle. I’ve seen this up close and I’m seriously looking at buying one. Gas is so expensive this gets better gas mileage than a traditional truck. I also like the idea that I can fit my family in the cab , no problem. The versatility this vehicle offers is perfect for our lifestyle. Not to mention this baby style!
I drive a Ram 1500 right now and can actually see myself getting this in the future
The little easter eggs over the wheel wells are mounts for GoPros. I really like it. I live in the city and this is perfect. You can use the cooler for tailgating but if want to go hunting or fishing, you keep small game or fishes in there on ice.
The hunting/fishing idea is probably not what Hyundai was thinking as they are appealing to more city buyers. But you could do that.
You can also do the dishes in it when camping and drain it after.

I just bought it and I love it. Wish mine had a little more power since I had a jeep Cherokee srt8 before this but it’s fine.
Got a 2023 Santa Cruz SEL with activity in California Sand about a month ago, exactly the small city truck I needed. The best part was not having to pay the Ford dealerships ridiculous markups.
I think this might be a good choice for handymen in more dense city environments where it's hard to get into some of the undersized garages. My handymen use converted minivan for this reason, flat-rainproof load floor for the work day, then seats back in for hauling kids on the weekend. For this to be more practical/economical for handymen it should be some sort of EV/erEV/PHEV with a smaller backseat to make room for a longer bed, maybe some more flat surfaces for paperwork.
I think this will be PHEV as well.
I don't think anyone is going to build a 2 door cab in this segment. I say that because the back can't get any smaller.
Maverick will suit them better. 40 mpg with the hybrid and cheaper as well, with a larger bed.

I’m really loving this truck. It’s not your typical truck. But I’m going to get me one in the next two years and can’t wait. I’m loving the design. It’s kind of in between an SUV and a truck. And of course I’m going to have it lifted a little more with bigger tires.
I think these will likely flop after 5-10 years and then eventually will be very desirable like the Subaru Baja’s are today. I hope this truck succeeds!

This kind os SUVish Truck has been selling like hot cakes for the past 5 years here in Brazil and only now other manufacturers are waking up. Huuuge market. They make a lot of sense really for people that live in urban areas and need some cargo space to move slightly bigger things that would not fit in a regular SUV trunk. Check the "Fiat Toro" which was the one responsible for making it popular and boosting FCA's sales like crazy. They sell more than Civics and Corollas combined.
Design is awesome until you reach the front grill. It is absolutely hideous! Yeah the lights blending in is neat but the overall style is gross.

I’m loving it. I was selected to do a 3 week trial with it and just got it delivered on Monday. I’m in Southern California and it’s the perfect vehicle for such a place. I plan on taking it out to Yosemite this weekend. Also the model I have comes equipped with GoPro mounts on those tabs that you pointed out above the wheel wells. I will attach my GoPro to it and share the footage on my channel.
Also it has a bed extender which allows you to add another foot or so to the cargo area with the tailgate down.
All I want to know is how the actual turbo engine feels when wound up??? Doug mentioned absolutely nothing about it. I was so disappointed he didn’t get on the throttle at all. Isn’t that what turbo engines are for???
@@rogermoreno1152 Most turbos aren't for excitement anymore but to give you adequate power in an engine with 2 cylinders less than what you'd normally get.
I just hauled 3, 1/4", 4'x8', full sheets of plywood in mine. The top of the wheel wells are flat and the tailgate has an elevated setting that is the same level. A couple of ratchet straps and drove 10 miles from HD back to the house.
This is the first time i see most people in comment section disagrees with Doug. That's some powerful stuff right there. Good on you Hyundai.

A LOT of people have big pickup trucks for no reason at all. Not this one cuz I think it’s ugly, but smaller sized trucks are way more suited to what people actually need when they want a truck
That is what fits most people. A truck would be useful for just about everyone, but not that many people have a 40' boat or a big ass horse trailer that requires a diesel F350 to tow. Most owners of those big ass trucks don't actually need it, they just own it because they wouldn't feel like a man without it. These smaller trucks are a practical option
Subaru did it, and Chevy did it with a cover, year prior to this.

Finally a Blind Spot Camera! We should not be using mirrors on cars in 2022'. Really we need fulltime review L&R cams but this is a start. Very interesting vehicle. That hidden space in the truck bed (Honda Ridgeline & this Cruz have) needs to be on all trucks asap - such great idea- Now make it a full 4x4 then we are talking
