This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Hyundai Santa Cruz activity vehicle. The Santa Cruz is based on the Tucson SUV platform and uses unibody construction rather than the traditional body on frame pickup underpinnings. This is Hyundai’s first ever sport adventure vehicle combining an SUV style with open-bed versatility. It has excellent towing capacity at 5,000 pounds and a 4.3-foot bed. It is 10-15 inches shorter than most midsize competitors but closer in size to the new Ford Maverick, which is only 4 inches longer. The Honda Ridgeline for example is over 14 inches longer than this Santa Cruz. But, to be fair to Hyundai, they are not calling this a pickup, even though it kind of looks like one. In Canada, it comes with just one engine option, the turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder with a wet 8-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters. It has 281 horsepower, 311 lb-ft of torque and standard AWD. In the US, the base trims come with a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, standard FWD. You can upgrade on the lower trims to the more powerful engine for $1,500 USD. We are testing the top Ultimate trim in Blue Stone, it comes with body-colour door handles and side mirrors, a dark chrome radiator grille, front bumper and tailgate handle. It comes standard with 18” wheels and optional 20” wheels. The sliding and lockable cover is lightweight but has strong aluminum construction that can hold up to 220 pounds and rolls neatly into a canister. There is also a lockable under bed waterproof storage compartment to keep your items dry and clean when on your adventures. There are 3 trims to choose from in Canada and 4 in the US. The two base trims in the US get the smaller 2.5L 4-cylinder engine and the top two trims, the 2.5T engine which is standard in Canada. The base 2.5T trim comes pretty well equipped with an 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated cloth front seats, a heated steering wheel and a manual driver’s seat for $38,499 CAD/$35,680 USD. There are a few differences between the US and Canada on this trim. The US gets a power driver’s seat, a sunroof, a wireless charging pad and a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, but no heated steering wheel; it’s standard on the top trim. In the US, this base 2.5T trim called SEL Premium comes very well equipped. In Canada, adding the trend package for $2,900 CAD will get you the sunroof, 10.25” digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, Bose sound system, ambient lighting (10 colours) and front collision avoidance assist with junction turning detection plus adaptive cruise control. The top trim, which we are testing is where you’ll find ventilated front seats, a 10.25” touchscreen and 64 colours of ambient lighting. That’s an extra $3,400 CAD compared to the base trim with the trend package and in the US just over $4,000. The best value is with the trend package for $41,399 CAD and in the US, the SEL Premium trim for $35,680 USD. I do like the bigger touchscreen but it doesn’t come with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto at this time. I know this feature is important to some of you, you can only get it with the 8” touchscreen. For fuel economy, the Santa Cruz gets 12.1L/100km, 19 MPG city and 8.6L/100km, 27 MPG highway.

I always love how balanced your reviews are! I've been waiting since our test drive to see your review on the Santa Cruz. We just took one out on the weekend and was blown away by the test drive. I loved it so much I decided to trade in my 6 month old Tacoma TRD OR for an Ultimate trim. At the end of the day, for me, the Santa Cruz is just more comfortable, has a much better interior and doesn't feel a tank while on the road. It will do everything I need a "real truck" to do but won't leave me wanting more. Plus, creature comforts like cooled seats will be great after a long day of mountain biking. I only wish there was a physical volume knob and an option to delete the piano black. Keep up the great work you two!

I actually like the way it looks, even though I found Tucson overstyled in front. But Hyundai Canada needs to get the base 2.4L as what American gets, especially when Canadian is more price sensitive than American. They can give as many trim levels for 2.4 as this turbocharged version. Even if I believe Tucson's hybrid and PHEV will come with Santa Cruz, as both are on same architecture.
Maverick will definitely outsold it, as its a Ford and has a base hybrid engine. That's despite the fact that Maverick will have as much cheap plastic as Bronco Sport and Escape.
Subaru Baja was a flop because its ugly and lack of power. Santa Cruz, on the other hand, needs a base engine to succeed.

Awesome review as always thank you, very objective, and I agree 💯 % with your opinions. It would be awesome if they came out with a hybrid, and then a plug-in hybrid version which of course is expected and will probably match the Tucson. If they offer a hybrid option and drop the price a little bit more to be competitive with the maverick I think that they would sell much better but we haven’t seen the numbers yet as it just came out so time will tell. It is incredibly unique I think it looks great, and good job Hyundai for being daring.

i think the size of the Santa Cruz is perfect for a hybrid or EV powertrain. I'd love a small pickup bed for carrying stuff around town but am honestly waiting til I can get one in EV form with AWD (I would've ordered a base Maverick if the hybrid could come with AWD). I hope these sell well. Its just not for me until there are more powertrain options. EVs are still a small part of sales but I'm of the opinion that most gas vehicles will take a depreciation hit as EVs become more mainstream in the coming years (well within the useful life of a new gas car bought today).

This helped inform my decision in buying the Ridgeline as it does pack a lot more 'truck' elements than these new smaller vehicles - along with amazing gas mileage and being easy to drive, maneuver and park.

Picked up my Sage Grey Ultimate last Friday ...absolutely in love with it. It is literally everything I've been waiting for in a small truck. While it would be nice for Canada to get the budget entry level models like the US, there's always room to add them later. So for now, Hyundai has handed the budget conscious buyer to Ford, and I'm sure they'll enjoy their Mavericks. I'm glad there are finally some smaller entrants in the truck market. The sheer SIZE (and let's face it, pretty terrible city handling) of all of the existing mid/full size trucks has kept me from updating my old 97 Sierra until now.

About two and a half years ago, I traded in a luxurious 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe XL for a 2009 Toyota Tundra with double the km and that cost more. Just wasn't a good experience, but I'm sure Hyundai has improved a bit in the last six years.

About 2 hours of forest roads and.... Much less than forest roads. One section had me watching for wheels to come off the ground. Big splashy mud sections too. It just took it all in stride - but really needs a wash this weekend. Can't believe how well it rides on old rock/gravel washboard roads. I actually had to point out to my wife that we were ON washboard - because you really couldn't tell. I'd really rather have the 18 inch rims and taller sidewalls, but the 20s did okay, and I think I only came close to bottoming out once. Love the idea of Sports Adventure Vehicle. Perfect for city and suburban environment! Unfortunately, Hyundai has become quite expensive and is no longer a budget / value for money purchase. You must really love the vehicle to pay for it! But I think the Santa Cruz will be a better seller than the Tucson!

I personally know of people who have purchased several Hyundais in a row and been very pleased with them. Against my better judgement, I bought a 2015 Santa Fe that always seemed to need something fixed, often at my expense, though occasionally under warranty. I keep hearing people complains that Hyundai/Kia don't have wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay for the top trim. I say it's good marketing strategy for Hyundai to include that on the lower trims..Most domestic brands will only make that feature specifically only for the top trim. Hyundai/Kia made it standard for the average Joe to have. That's how you cut competition. Kudos to Hyundai/Kia for that.

  • @Hammerdak

I still think Hyundai missed the mark by not designing this off the larger Santa Fe platform.
That would have allowed for a 5’6” bed , more legroom front and back and probably upped the payload and tow capacity.
So now, instead of competing with the Ridgeline , Ranger, Canyon group , the Santa Cruz competes with the Maverick in an , as yet, unproven small pickup market.

Many reviewers have commented on the wonderfully-low base price of the Maverick, *especially* with its standard hybrid powertrain. I'm no fan of the quality and reliability of Ford vehicles, in general, and now, here's one expressly designed to be unusually inexpensive? It should be no surprise that you don't get something for nothing (IF it were to be built by Toyota, that might be a different story). Hyundai has a far-from-sterling reputation, as well, but in this case, I'd definitely take the Santa Cruz (but at a lower trim level).

So many people have asked me about the (then) upcoming Santa Cruz. Nobody (well only 1 person) has asked me a single question about Ford’s Maverick. The Ford, I expect, will sell incredibly. This Hyundai looks spectacular. It will also sell well... despite it’s price. And as the DesRosiers Automotive Consultant Group has recently pointed out, that the average Canadian new light duty passenger vehicle is currently just north of $40,000... which is where it has priced itself (base). I believe that the Santa Cruz is trying to become ‘the latest’ trendy stylish product, whilst The Maverick will pick up all of the regular/average family (or person) and utilitarian sales (including corporate/small businesses). I was waiting to to see your review/thoughts on this product. Very good points. Thanks for the video.

Putting such a non-traditional transmission on this car is going to fail.....should have just stuck with one of their other regular transmissions. We have an Audi A3 and a Nissan Titan so this half SUV half truck is perfect for vacay and urban shopping. I think young people will also love it for off road and for tailgating. It’s going to work for both demographics. Soccer moms are probably still going to prefer their vans and minivans.
