Fun fact: every single year there was a procession and remembrance of how the Republic put a stop to Falier’s attempted coup, which included also a reenactment of his beheading (which took place on the same “Giants’ Stairs” of the Ducal Palace upon which each new Doge’s inauguration happened so they enacted that part there)
And every single year the current Doge was required/obligated to be present and behold the beheading’s reenactment as an yearly reminder to not get any weird ideas about making secret plots against the state

It's a good thing that the Council of Ten didn't get any ideas about taking over Venice themselves. That's always a risk when a government gives a group of people that much power over internal affairs.

A quick wiki check says the Council of Ten was elected for 1 year terms by the Great Council aka the same aristocrats it was supposed to keep an eye on. Said aristocrats would probably be motivated to ensure either those selected lacked a power base to do anything, and/or that seats were divided among the major power brokers.

The US doesn't actually like making money for the US, it likes making money for a few people in charge of very large business corporations; the US doesn't actually want a functioning democracy, it wants a small council of self-serving rulers...I'm not talking about the Supreme Court on that, either. The Electoral College sucks by design, not by failure to predict that a small elite group of wealthy men will continue to maintain power for the wealthy men of the ruling class

That, good sir, is apparently entirely a matter of perspective. Dandolo didn't do anything to Venice, he just destabilized and wrecked pretty much everywhere else
Enrico Dandolo got appropriate revenge for his own blinding and the massacre of the Latins in Constantinople in 1182.
In terms of being the platonic ideal of a Venetian and being the Doge, then Marin Falieri might be the worst.

In standard Italian it's "Duca" from the latin "dux" which at times it's rendered in "duce" when people wanted to get fancy (hence why it was adopted by the fascists).

I loved the green canalled city so much, I've used it as inspiration for my medieval gem Mezzaluna in the D&D campaign I'm currently running. (Gem? Pearl? Mine's carved out of marble. It's also 250 feet above the sea it abuts to and the canals flow into FOUR WATERFALLS. They also use hamster wheels and water wheels to move cargo up and down the clift from the docks below the city. Take that, Venice.)
