If my art history knowledge is correct, many saints were said to have "life-like" looking remains hundreds of years after their deaths. In fact, this resistance to the natural process of decay was frequently cited as a miracle in the canonization process, making it an important piece of evidence supporting the body's claim to sainthood. Essentially the logic was: this martyr must be saintly, because how else would their dead body look so undead, and the body must be the true remains of said saint, because how else would it look so undead. Kind of circular logic but 🤷‍♂

Oh, yes, I'm aware of these beliefs; they're also part of the Orthodox tradition (I'm Greek). In any case, it's a virtual certainty that any given relic was just some random bones of some random guy, and by the way the faithful would be unlikely to be shaken in their faith, even if they knew that to be the case. I recommend you read Umberto Eco's _Baudolino_ for a hearty laugh regarding fake relics and pious fraud 😛

Can’t wait for the next Venice video where he reveals that the body in the Basilica di San Marco is very likely not the body of St. Mark. There was a flood in Venice (shocker) that actually caused significant damage to the basilica and the body was lost for a bit. The legend is that the arm of St. Mark reached out from the water to help people find the body and that is the body they put back into the tomb. Since the stealing of the body was all about propaganda, political and religious prestige, the story about whose body is actually in the tomb changes to fit the political fancy of the situation. Some claim there were two bodies stolen from Alexandria and put in the tomb. One is St. Mark and the other is Alexander the Great. It’s pretty likely that whoever body is in there is neither of those people.

Even got to see the tomb of St. Mark up close and it was a really moving experience-even if you’re not religious, you can’t deny the gravity of the historical significance!

Hi Blue, nice video! I've got some further details for those who are interested: regarding St. Theodor, the way the Venetians did him dirty is even worse than the stuff you've touched upon. He is a Byzantine saint so - wanting to split from their ruling - the Venetians absolutely despised that he was their patron. After they received the skeleton of St. Marc they built the first St. Marc's basilica right in between the Doge's palace and their designated church to St. Theodor. To make matters worse, they even incorporated parts of his church into their new state church. The church of St. Theodor was finally torn down when they rebuild St. Marc's basilica, but parts of the northern transepts are still those exact walls from St. Theodor's church. They just coated them with lots and lots of marble.
Fun fact: It is unknown wether Marc ever went to Alexandria. The first stories about this quest were written hundreds of years after he was said to have lived. So the Venetians might have stolen an already falsified skeleton. It is even documented that his skull was still in Alexandria in the 13. century.
Another fun fact about Marc's "incredible" resilience: Venice lost the corpse during a fire where it was (most likely - definitely) destroyed. However, after they rebuilt the church into its present shape a column miraculously opened up and revealed Marc's skeleton unharmed.
I'm glad you've touched upon the obvious bias within the story (known as "translatio Sancti Marci"/TSM). The corpse was probably abducted sometime during 826-827 as we know from the testament of the then Doge who ordered his wife to build the first St. Marc's basilica for them bones. As for the text about their steal, it was probably written in the middle or at the end of the 9th century, but that's only a calculated guess. Funnily enough, the research about the authors for this text is split wether it was written by the Doge (or, more likely, someone in his inner circle) or by the people of Venice. If it was written by the Doge it would support the legitimization of the corpse being in Venice and underline the claim of the city for becoming a recognized theological power in the area. But if it was actually written by the people of Venice then it could be interpreted that it was a calculated warning addressed to the ruling class of their city that their power is built upon the back's of the people. The latter thesis is supported by the fact that the TSM had upticks in popularity whenever there had been a crisis between the Doge and the people. Also the protagonists in the TSM were notably not part of the Doge's advisors nor the nobility, they were simple merchants. If this theory is true, then it would be amazing evidence for the super progressive politics in Venice: though they had a Doge, they were aware that the power is found in the masses not in one ruler.
Part of why the cult of Marc is so strong in Venice is strong, is because they tried to mimic the relation between the Vatican and St. Peter. So (for this last one, please, put your tinfoil hat on) they were maybe thinking about cutting ties with the Vatican, too, and establish the centre of Christianity in their own lagoony backyard.
