- The Italian Renaissance is known for its fancy art and ginormous domes, but what about the visionaries behind it? In this ~~fancy new series~~ we'll discuss the antics of the period's most famous artists.

The Sistine Chapel is a beautiful piece that also doubles as a mix of subtle, not-so-subtle, and even literal middle fingers to the church ranging from a cloth surrounding God actually being a painting of the human brain to a rendering of God with a hole cut in the back of his robe showing exactly what you think it would to the bishop in his chair.

Best of all, the local clergy hired him AGAIN after that (albeit with more guards to keep an eye on him), but Mikey ended up pulling another fast one by painting a fresco that that included a depiction of sinners being cast into Hell with said sinners baring a striking resemblance to the clergy who hired him.
I always forget it was Michelangelo, but this is one of my favorite details. Hearing about that makes me want to go see the Sistine Chapel in person.

Dude that's not even the only crazy story about Michelangelo. There was also the time when he got on the bad side of the Pope and ended up hiding in a secret room in Medici Chapel for several months, just doodling on the walls, until the Pope promised not to kill him. Oh, and the Pope at the time was a Medici, which makes the whole thing even weirder.
I think Michelangelo needs to be his own video unto himself, there's way too many stories about him.

Michelangelo too! You can see it in the Sistine Chapel; the church may have forbidden it, but there's an impression of a cranial cross-section surrounding the depiction of God.

I've yet to see a party of murder hobos reach above a Lvl 10, and their deaths are always beautiful.
History has a habit of constantly highlighting *wars* and *kings* but it's refreshing when history TH-camrs take time to cover *economics* and *artists* which are just as important.

War is influential, but I don't agree that it drives history. All things considered, it's a relatively small part of it. Just what gets recorded better

Fun fact: Caravaggio in italian is similar to scarafaggio, the word for chockroach so as a kid i went to a museum and saw a painting made by Caravaggio and shouted: "mom, why does this say coackroach?" And all the people in the room laughed

I've read somewhere that, ironically, Da Vinci himself didn't believe his awesome painting or designing skills to be the best thing he could do. He apparently was most proud of being able to bend horseshoes straight as a party trick.

I love Gentileschi, and her Holofernes is one of my favorite paintings. The thing I admire most about her (similar to what I admire about Dante, actually) is that through her skill she created a world where Agostino Tassi is remembered as a rapist before he's ever thought of as a painter.

The Director said, "I didn't want to show her as a victim but like a more modern woman who took her life into her own hands." But instead of, I don't know, highlighting her massively successful artistic career and literally taking her life into her own hands, the fricken hack made her fall in love with her rapist.

Seventeen-year-old Artemisia Gentileschi (Valentina Cervi), the daughter of Orazio Gentileschi, a renowned Italian painter, exhibits artistic talent, and is encouraged by her father, who has no sons and wishes his art to survive after him. However, in the chauvinistic world of early 17th century Italy, women are forbidden to paint human nudes or enter the Academy of Arts. Orazio allows his daughter to study in his studio, although he draws the line at letting her view nude males. She is direct and determined, and bribes the fisherman Fulvio with a kiss to let her observe his body and draw him.
Artemisia seeks the tutelage of Agostino Tassi (Mike Manojlovic), who is painting frescoes in the same building as her father, to learn from him the art of perspective. Tassi is a man notorious for his night-time debauchery. The two hone their skills as artists, but they also fall in love, and begin having sexual relations. Artemisia's father discovers the couple together and files a lawsuit against Tassi for rape. There is also an anime! its called Arte! it does take some liberties though... It's really good though!
I had heard of Artemisia Gentileschi before in an art class but DAMN did my art teacher leave some stuff out about her.
I learned about her from a book called Rejected Princesses by Jason Porath. Gives a few more details about her life and mentions a movie adaptation where Tassi and Gentilschi were star-crossed lovers.
@@acdsarc11 Ironically I found out about her from an alternate history series called 1632 where she was a character in some short stories, a hell of an artist and a woman as mentioned.
My art teacher was a big fan of Artemisia and her art. His class and this video though are the only times I've heard anything about her.

I cried at how beautiful Artemisia's art is. The one of the woman holding her hand up to the candle, the texture on her clothes, how dark the shadow is yet how you can still tell what lays beneath. It's all perfect.

As an Italian and a major art nerd, Blue's pronunciation of Brunelleschi's full name is one of the most amazing thing I've ever heard
Years back, I watched an Imax film at the Boston Museum of Science about a parachuting group testing out da Vinci's parachute design. It worked fantastically (obviously) and they intended to do further research into the design and see what else could be learned from it. Even centuries later, Leonardo da Vinci's taking us to school.
Which is why everyone should hug Leonardo. Do it now.

ARTEMISIAAAA I swear to god I love her so much!! I very rarely hear anyone talk about Roman Baroque artists and I was honestly so shocked she was on this list I'm not even mad about it being "Renaissance". "Judith Beheading Holofernes" is one of my all time favorite paintings and welp I just love Artemisia and the Roman Baroque so much (seriously guys, the art was amazing!)

"Blood Water Paint" is a fantastic, powerful book about Artemisia Gentileschi that I strongly recommend. It's a relatively quick read as it's written in verse, but man does it make an impact

That sketch of Gentileschi was so good I temporarily mistook it for a photograph. Whoever did it had a truly phenomenal eye for detail, lighting, and shadow.

Another good example of turning trauma into art is the painting of the horse running towards the train. I forget who the artist was but he lost his family in a car/train crash and kept dreaming about the horse running towards the train, then he stopped having the dream so much. It’s a really beautiful piece of art. Super creepy but beautiful.

Though, the fact that he literally was like "I wanted to explore how gravitation could be portrayed in magic since that hasn't been done already" is pretty fair. And pretty effin dope.

I love that you covered Artemisia! Her original drawing for Susanna and the Elders was in fact much more violent and had to be toned down; I believe it's visible under the painting itself with modern viewing technology.

What's funny is that I had an art history class that briefly talked about the Renaissance and showed Susana and the Elders in class. The professor then went on to talk about how it was the painters "male gaze" that influenced the pervy tone of the picture, having no actual idea that the painter was actually a woman.

I had read about Artemisia two years ago right before I got accepted into the college I wanted and I spent the whole year waiting for any of my professors to ask for a research about famous artists. One of them did at the end of the year. I did about 10/12 pages that included her back story, comparing her Judith painting, discussing a couple of other paintings of her, and listing her achievements. I got full mark on that research and the professor still remembers me!

you know someone once asked me "how do these guys get THIS good at what they do" and i said "can you make a plate from clay?" he said no, so i told him, "what if i told you, your only source of income was the ability to make plates and other dishes from clay, and fire them and that as you did it people began demanding more pretty, nicer designs" he said "but i can't" and i said "only because you have other options and haven't practiced it since your where a young man or teenager, if i went back intime, and forced you to only make dishes from clay, chances are you'd get good at it real quick and start getting creative, making people, animals, objects.....eventually you'd get so good at it you could do it blindfolded, because most of art and any other physical medium is muscle memory, and because of this, you begin developing greater skill and eventually start dabling in technology out of boredome cuz videogames and movies aren't a thing" the point in this diatribe is for those artists out their who see davinci and other's work and think "man, i'm nowhere near their lvel" you aren't you might not ever be, unless you put down that tablet and pick up a real brush and canvas with real oil lead paints and get started now MAYBE you'll be almost as good as them by the time your fifty, people learn things easiest when their younger and then develop what they learn further from a skill to a mastery, so to any out their who are comparing themselves to these guys stop, your work is great on it's merrit, and your a wanderful artist just for making the attempt, keep practicing and keep up the good work, also thanks blue this was a fun video, i put this here because i know theirs atleast one artist looking at this video bummed that their not that good and it's for them, sorry for being so long winded

Artemisia was such an amazing artist! You should check out her under drawings/under paintings. They portray more of what she wanted.
