This video was really challenging to make for me. As I was testing these alcoholic beverages, I was constantly asking myself if I'm doing the right thing... Although I drunk a lot of alcohol when I was younger, a couple years ago I almost practically eliminated alcohol from my life. I felt during this experiment I went back to drinking more than my body can handle in the long term. So I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal which in my case is drinking less and only on very special occasions (if at all). Tom, Top note again! Red & White wine is my call everytime & biodynamic if possible. It does keep me sane at the end of a full day & I make sure it does not become a prop!! I just cannot deal with beer at all ,far too much carbs!!
I haven’t had alcohol in eight / ten years. I just stopped one day, after my son was born in 1982 I stopped completely for about five years then I would have a glass or two of wine and a beer with tacos or pizza. Then I found out I was serious diabetic, my blood sugar rollercoasters real lows (45) then up to 400, my body feels comfortable around 200/250 I wear the sensor and watch what I eat, I have lost 35 pounds, but the rollercoaster still runs, I wake up to 400’s or dropping to 40’s 50’s or what ever I was in the hospital lately and they call codes on me about six times, I coded myself at home at least four times in a month!
The fact that he is Czech adds a huge amount of integrity to this "application study" as they truly are the biggest beer drinkers in the world, by far--look it up. . I too am from Czech heritage with slight pre-diabetes, a bit older than he is, and always looking for some drinking habits that won't escalate my chances of developing Type 2. This is a great video! Keep up the great work!
I just discovered your channel and it has changed my life. I developed diabetes while fighting breast cancer and didn’t know anything about it. My sugars have run so high! Until now. I’m now using a cgm and I learned from you tips to better manage my sugar. It’s blowing my mind how much better it all is now! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us!
This is your latest video so i wanted to thank you. I got my blood test today and my a1c is 5.5. Which means im no longer considered diabetic type 2 according to my doctor. Your channel has helped me out immensely so thank you so incredibly much
Last May I did the blood tests and I had 12.7% and glycemia at 350 diagnosis: type 2 diabetes. under medical prescription, I took Metformin for breakfast and dinner and rapid insulin breakfast, lunch and dinner. I first eliminated any food containing sugar, and carbohydrates. A low carb diet. I mainly eat fish, eggs meat and vegetables and a couple of times a week only for lunch pasta (being Italian I love pasta). in September I did the blood tests again and I had 5.5% and 100 of fasting glycemia. Now I only take Metformin continuing with this type of diet and doing physical activity! Come on guys! good luck! Very interesting video! greetings from Italy
@@OceanFrontVilla3 I stopped drinking went on the keto diet and now my a1c is at 5.2 after being diagnosed with pre-diabetes!! I always work out and am 70 years old and feel much better.
@@dbcooper692 Excellent! I'm not on keto or carnivore, I would say I eat Mediterranean style. I have no health issues and I'm not on any drugs and I'm 67. I hike everyday, had no shots and haven't had covid. Never had flu either and no flu shots. My serum D level is high.
Being a type 1 diabetic for over 30 years ,I agree with you 100% . I have had the same results from different alcoholic drinks . Rye whiskey and Diet Pepsi here . Thanks so much👍👍🐟🐟
Ive been a type 2 for 25 years was a harcore beer drinker but my blood sugar always went crazy. In my old age ive learned that i sip really good bourbons. And like your results i have no spike. Its got me apprciating bourbon and its history. Your channel is very informative keep up the good work
I'm type 1. I drink red wine most nights, and not just one glass. I never EVER, EVER, EVER touch beer. If I do that, I know I'll be chasing highs and lows all night. Helpful video. It is refreshing to see you being honest... I like to watch your sugar pixel during your videos...:)
I experiment just like this guy. I have pre-type 2. I found that mixing Diet Ginger ale with regular ginger ale(ginger ale has less sugar than most drinks) and bourbon makes a really great drink.
@@CC-km8gt @melaniestout2929 Any normal DRY 12-15% alcolohol red works for me. I buy in the 10-30 dollar range. I tend towards Pinot Noir, and Cabernets. Regular white wines occassionally spike my blood sugar, but not too often. I stay away from mojitos and chardonnay... anything bubbly is going to be rough. Each person is different, I think. I drink at home with a Sugar Pixel in my face. Be careful out on the town.
I prefer a pickle-back, a shot of whiskey & a shot of pickle juice (zero carbs), granted, high sodium. However, there are many benefits to pickle juice, as well. I’ve read it helps your glucose levels and also used for muscle cramps and is very hydrating. I drink pickle juice just because I love the taste of it.
I never heard of pickleback but I Love pickle juice. I’ll have to try this some time. I wonder what goes best with pickle juice? Do you mix them? Or just order both as shots?
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about three years ago. I was drinking a lot of beer up til then, but after meeting with a nutritionist, I learned more about the importance of carbs. I have to be honest, I still drank a LOT of alcohol. But I switched to vodka soda (no sugar). I also paid attention to my food diet, but I still drank like a fish! Turns out, despite my bad habit of drinking, I got my A1c down to about 5!
@ I am NOT a doctor or nutritionist, but as I understand, it’s better to choose clear liquor (most distilled) and avoid artificial sweeteners, like aspartame. According to Google, Coke Zero is sweetened with a combination of aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K).
I’m newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic and drink wine or a mixed drink a couple of times a month. I always do dry January which is coming up in two weeks, and I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with alcohol intake . After watching this video, I’m planning to cut back even more , saving alcohol for only special occasions and never more than one drink at a time.
My go to drink is Gin with diet tonic water in a tall glass, usually add a peel of lemon.. No glucose spike as judged by the Dexcon continuous monitor. Here in the states there is a Margarita Light (Safeway) which has a minimal impact.
This is a great video, very informative thank you. I don't drink anymore, I stopped 10 years ago and I don't miss it so much. I have friends and family who drink, some of them have type 2 diabetes including myself, I think this video will help them a lot. Thanks again 👍
I am type 2 and a performer. My favorite drink is Jim Beam and diet coke. My Dr. told me to carb up before I drink to avoid complications. It has worked for me as long as I watch my limit. I also take milk thistle to prevent any liver damage. Which has worked well also.
Brilliant! the world needs more people like you. The world has two types of people those that listen what they are told and those that find out for themselves. Bravo!
I was diagnosed in Mar-93 as a Type 1 diabetic. Recently starting to feel a loss on sensation in my feet which my Endo says could be diabetes related or could be related to my love of beer! When I was first diagnosed, I knew something was wrong with my body as I had lost 20kg in 6 weeks and was peeing more than a horse! This happened while I was in the Mlitary so I wasn't too worried about losing the weight, even though I felt like shit and was peeing all the time? After an unfortunate family event that lead to me being charged with assault I went and saw a Doctor and I don't think I'd even sat down yet and he said I think your Diabetic (the Keto Acidosis, Acetone, smell gave it away). I remember being "educated" about diabetes in the hospital, which had to follow the "Medical" guidelines which I must say didn't agree with how I wanted to lead my life. "NOT MEDICAL ADVICE!" Like Tom, I experimented on myself to get familiar with my new condition and how I had to deal with it. I recall one weekend afternoon making a decision to see just how low can I go? I was reading Tom Clancy "Red Storm Rising " at the time and I decided to check my blood sugars often as I continued to read as I knew my BSL was going low. I got to 1.3 mmol and had the dis-orientating situation that Tom talks about as I could no longer focus on what I was reading! Literally went and ate a tablespoon of sugar to see what would happen and realised that my life was an ongoing science experiment, like the rest of us in this world who have to balance what we put into our bodies versus the outcomes? Like Tom, I mostly get it kind of Ok, but he is next level on getting it right. I brew (and consumme) my own low carb beer (in ridiculous quanties) and have been doing so for over twenty years but I love the passion, enthusiasm and education that Tom brings to the world of Diabetes!
I believe Michelob Ultra in the states is like this. There are a couple beers that are pitched as being "healthier" and "Ultra low carb" - so not for diabetics specifically, but same thing. :) They taste pretty awful though...
I am a type 2 diabetic for over 4 decades and your video is one of the clearest and best in terms of authenticity and information. Keep up the good work. God bless. Many thanks.
I clicked on this video with the idea to ask you where you came from, and magically, you said that almost immediately. I speak different languages, and I was having difficulty placing your accent. Czechia is very beautiful.
Great video Tom thankyou. Diabetes can be so frustrating and confusing, my partner has type 1, i really feel for anyone living with diabetes. We are grateful for your content Tom it is very helpful. Look after yourself ✌️👍💚
I see your point and fully agree! I was debating including this point to the video but then decided against it to avoid the video being to long. I should have probably kept it in:) Thank you for your input!
Think you’re confusing alcohol with marijuana. I usually eat before I drink. Drinking on an empty stomach can be a problem but I don’t think alcohol innately makes you hungry.
I just discovered your channel and its been very helpful. I am a type 2 diabetic & have been managing my sugars with A1C of 5.9, 6.6, tested in the past two years. I take medication Low dosage metformin. I rarely drink but on special holidays, Christmas, New year or birthday I like a glass or two of Chardonnay. I plan to watch your videos and list the go to foods that are good for diabetics. Thank you
As a physician, I’m impressed with your testing procedures. If you really want to get control over type 2, test this: drink a cup of mugwort tea mornings and evenings for 3 weeks and watch your glucose levels level, then stabilize. I’ve been getting successful results with type 2 patients for years using Mugwort leaf (Artemisia vulgaris) in this fashion, watching diet simultaneously, of course; like eating from the green bowl.
Thank you so much for this film. It was very interesting and informative. I have type 2 and struggle to stop drinking! My wife gets SO angry with me, so I’ll show her your film.
Thank you for all of your experimentation with foods and drinks and how they impact Type 1 diabetics! I appreciate all that you do to help us be happier and healthier!
If you're type 1 and want to drink the best choice, I've found, is light beer. For me the amount of carbs typically balanced the shutting off the glucose production of your liver as it works to take care of the liquor. I used to drink quite heavily in college and when i kept it to light beer my bloodsugars held just about steady and didn't drop too much during the night either. Might have helped that those were not sitting parties either, but dancing, walking around the area, etc. Mixed drinks with non-sugar soda (rum and diet, vodka and diet etc) could be tricky as my bloodsugar would drop too much later on. But I'm with you on that looking back...not sure if I would drink quite as much as I did. Andrew Huberman's podcast on alcohol changed my life. I never knew how much alcohol messes up your body, and just as importantly, your BRAIN. I am an academic, and I can't help but wonder how much better I would be, how much stronger my memory would be, if I'd drank less (I did not really ever get blackout drunk, but did have a night or two a week that were really fun). It also just DECIMATES your gut and now I am spending a lot of time trying to fix those issues. Our culture pushes alcohol so hard - every fun activity, even sports, is linked with drinking. I used to play ultimate frisbee, so even moreso there actually. But it is a LIE. You can totally have fun with out alcohol, and its unnecessary in most cases. When I first started cutting back this year I felt a little sad and like I would never enjoy things the way I did previously with a drink in hand, and people would not want to hang out with me anymore if we weren't drinking together. But over a few months of cutting back from 5-6 drinks a week to 2, to 1, to only on occasion, I've found I'm missing it less and less. I don't think there is anything wrong with people who choose the path to have a drink more than I do, but I just don't feel like I'm missing out any more and its stopped being at all difficult to sip on a water or something else with them instead of having a drink in hand. No one cares, neither do I, and my social life is proceeding as it was previously, but now I am healthier (and don't lose any time to hangovers either!). I am also encouraged by the increase in numbers of mocktails being served at many restaurants, so you can have a treat without the literal poison (albeit low-grade) in it. The prevalence of those also suggests that many others are choosing this path as well. So if you're thinking about it, I say go for it - give it a few months, allow yourself an occasional drink on special occasions, but overall pull back and just see how you feel - it will probably surprise you as it did me :)
Thank you for making the science bit so easy to understand. I'm a cider drinker and i'm so glad there are now many zero sugar options available. also will have to get some stevia sweetners. i wish i had them on my recent trip to Cuba
I really appreciate your story. My doctor doesn't understand diabetes. So, since she hasn't prescribed the meds that I need, I have been using information you and others have given and using scotch to bring my A1C down. I realize this is not a good long-term solution, but it gave me a bridge to adopt a Keto diet. I have lost another 20 lbs for a total of 30% of my max body weight. More importantly, I eat very little carbs. Eggs, bacon, steak, and chicken. A little vegetable now and then, but absolutely no refined sugars or processed foods. I ride my bike at least 10 hours a week for the last 40 years, usually more. Lift weights 5 times a week; an hour at least each session. I work out the whole time. No lift weight and rest 5 mins. Many of your colleagues have pointed out that one can't exercise their way out of diabetes. I'm living proof. Until I changed my diet, I did not see any improvement in my condition. I'm a type 2, so I really think I am on the road to recovery by going, 90%, carb free. I still enjoy a margarita on the weekend, but with sugar free margarita mix. I've also reduced my diabetes meds, and my daily checks of glucose are not perfect but
But, But It's good, or people would't drink it. What would Fishing be without a Cold one, Or sipping Scotch or Bourbon after a day of hunting by the fire.

Just wanted to thank you for your videos. I’ve been pre diabetic for years and sometimes I get diabetes fatigue. Your videos add a “ we all only human” quality which really helps. A lot of professional courses just follow the everything is off the list line which doesn’t help me live with it and I truly think it’s an unrealistic goal. Just wanted to add that Schweppes are the only company I can find that makes a tonic water that’s sugar free, but I can’t alway get it in public places, so you soda water is a game changer!
as a Type 1 myself - I've found that tequila does not raise my blood sugar. (it's even better than red wine). It's good for a few reasons: 1/ it doesn't taste sweet so I do not drink a lot 2/ you still feel it in the morning 3/ as mentioned - it doesn't raise blood sugar. Try this for a test. (I prefer the gold tequila) :)
Howdy Tom!👋🤓 Your title did get my attention! 😁 When I was in my twenties and early thirties, I drank mostly rum and Cokes and wine coolers ( mostly when I went clubbing). Then diabetes hit me like a ton of bricks....I was 32 at the time. I remained in denial for a few years after, and screwed up my body even more...😮. I'm now sixty years old and finally decided to change my diet to the Nutritarian way of eating. I've struggled with this disease for most of my life due to eating the worst diet....the American fast food and highly processed foods...🙁 I'm now on the slow road to reduce the pharmacy of drugs I'm on, nearly lost my eyesight ( was saved from that, due to my Retinologists' intervention), and having to retrain my taste buds to love natural foods. I truly hope no one has to go through my experience...I've lost out on so much in my life. It's like starting all over again....enjoyed your content! "Cheers" 🍸🍷🍹☕🍵 😂🤗
I have a type 1 daughter 5 years old. That's why I follow your content, hopefully she steers clear of alcohol. So many of us have been programmed that we need to poison ourselves for dopamine hits and social acceptance.
Hmmm👏👏👏❤❤❤ I love this Video. I am 70years old Diabetic Mama. I don't take alcohol but once a while i take unsweetened yogurt with or without dark chocolate. I EXPERIENCED VERY LOW SUGAR LEVEL. I was nearly gone. Little in take of Sprite drink help a little before i landed in hospital. My major problem now is "NEUROPATHY". My legs go NUMB. I am seriously worried. What do i do?? Grandma Olayinka from Nigeria.
@@jurajsladkay2608 Yes... Neurophaty could be caused by longterm high blood sugar. Except, it is already too late. In general, Doctors say no cure for diabetic patient. But, it is not true. I fixed my knee OA and snoring problem by diet I mentioned. My sebboroic disorder also controlled. No more corticosteroid ointment to my skin.
I've just met your video. I have type 2 diabetes (last year diagnosed). With a strict diet, lot of walk-run programme, my weight 110 kg to 78kg and my A1C amount dropped from 13% to 5.7% in 10 months. Now I'm very fine with it. I had my suspicions about using alcohol. Did I use it? Hell yea! actually, I just want you to to test Turkish Raki. (It has its own culture) 1) It has anice inside, no sugar and smell may not good for some people but, 2) you mostly dilute with water (normally 45 degrees with alcohol) and ice 3) As customs in my country, you should drink it with meal (specially dinner), fish & seafood is the best. 4) As eating and drinking goes together you can fiil soon. Best 3 glasses. 5) The most important thing is it has low carbs, no sugary cocktails known (may be new in some fancy bars). Just water, ice and a good meal. Have fun 6) By the way, don't drink alone! Best with friends, whatever they drink.
I'm a type 2, once o twice a month I do drink a little bit and my two go to drinks is caipirinha but with stevia instead a regular sugar and coke cero with fernet... water in between drinks for cero hangover the next day and as far as eating while drinking it would be steaks, sausages or a bunless burger if posible with eggs sunnyside up. Definitely no fries or any carbs. Loved the video, and it was definitely helpful 👍
Such a nice Video, as always! Had exactly the same experiences with alcohol the first time when I had to learn to live with Type 1, woke up in Hospital ketoacidotic one time, also woke up super low and sick another night. And I agree with You, dry wine is my choice nowadays if I want to have a drink, and if i go in a Bar or to a party, my favorite drink is the same as yours: Whiskey Coke Zero on ice. I like your Videos so much, and think they help so many people living a healthier and more uncomplicated Life. Thank you so much for everything!
I got told in 1984 when I was diagnosed that alcohol has a lowering effect on blood sugar cus it stops the carbs being absorbed so less glucose going in to the blood stream. They even said if you have say 2 pints of lager then eat a bag of crisps. But I found this happens the morning after, or as you put a few hours later. I cud reduce the insulin used by 50% the next morning. Back then there was no cgm so it was often a bit precarious. With the libre 2 I have now its not a problem.
Fantastic video! I came to these conclusions after giving up beer a few years back, and moving almost exclusively to Vodka, lime juice and soda and red wine (Shiraz) and saw an almost instant improvement in HBa1c and general glucose levels. Your testing methodology is admirable and I hope you get many more followers, I have referred a few diabetic friends to your channel. Keep up the great work!
Denial, defiance, and depression are all powerful things, and I think we all go through them at one time or another when we live with diabetes. I've lived with the disease for almost 50 years, and can say that my behavior in college verged on suicidal...drinking and doing drugs were dangerous behaviors, and I'm lucky to have survived without complications. Like you, learning the effects of drinking took me time and testing, which was much easier since CGMs became available (they were not when I was in college).
I had most of these symptoms since I my early teen years. I dont understand why checking glucose levels isn't part of yearly physical. I didn't find out until I was seriously ill with kidney disease. This post is excellent & everyone should see it.
Our son is type 1 and the endocrinologists said he should absolutely eat fresh fruits. BUT to be careful with the fruits as they do affect the BG differently. Berries are a big staple in our house but we measure with a scale to get a more accurate carb count and bolus a little more accurately.
hi! i love your channel. my son is type 1, two years now. he is eighteen. everything you say, is gold for me. since you have so much experience. he introduced me to you, and we both think you are great! thank you!
After writing an earlier comment I feel it's important to add this one for Tom! Obviously a HOT topic, but I applaud you on your well presented video based on your experiences! Well done, don't fret the haters, you have presented your experiences with diabetes!
Type 2 diabetic here in 2012. Completely reversed in 2014 and lost 4 stones too. Carnivore/keto diet. I actually eat high fat, low carb, i.e. very low sugar. Just the opposite of what my doctor told me to eat. I can go out once per week and have a few drinks but I've gone right off alcohol. It's like a habit or addiction that I've got bored with. Good luck with yours.
The danger is that alcohol consumption and diabetes both put a huge strain on the liver; I've reduced my drinking from a bottle of red wine per day to one glass every 2-3 weeks, max, to give my liver a chance to recover.
No alcohol is good for Diabetics, I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 64 years, was 12 in 1960. I quit drinking one ONLY a drink at night, for 5 months now and love it. It is such a great feeling. Alcohol is dangerous for **anyone** more than 1 drink a WEEK. The liver rejects it, the kidneys need to eliminate it. Not good. I am now ONLY drink liquid THC, 10mg, daily, allot safer, it stopped all swelling in the feet. No ALCOHOL is my suggestion. I am using the old methods, no machines, no patches, only finger prick and insulin injection ….. my A1C is 6.1,2 or 3. Always. You loose weight without alcohol too. Kidneys love it. My opinion. When I started, you boiled a glass syringe in a pan with a stainless needle. You would sharpen the needle on a knife honing stone every 10 days and got a new every month. I am a master of Diabetes by experience. Otherwise I enjoy this site, it is helpful. My favorite so far was the testing of the diabetic watches. That was a great show.
I doubt the swelling in the feet was due to the alcohol unless you aren't drinking enough water as swelling feet is the body trying to retain water. ✔️ I doubt the thc is the solution as it isn't hydrating you. ;)

Thank you VERY much for putting this video together! I've been pre-diabetic for years and was diagnosed as type II last fall with an A1C of 8.7. after several months of medication and no beer (I miss it!), my A1C is in the low 6s and continuing to go down. I've been so frustrated though because the doctors have no idea what I can drink when it comes to alcohol, saying abstinence is best which sounds like a cop-out. Thank you again for your time, information and effort!
I am a type 2 diabetic and I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos and yes experience can be a harsh teacher. I have been a musician all my life and as much as I'd like to say I abstain from etoh that would not be accurate but I do drink in moderation. I did have one particularly bad experience when switching my oral diabetic medication and playing out the same night. Like an idiot I had 3-4 shots and by the end of the night I became confused and extremely diaphoretic. Luckily I was able to still communicate I needed some kind of juice that brought my sugar,(which had bottomed out in the mid 20's ! back up........tough tough embarrasing lesson.
Thanks for your very informative and helpful video presentation. I have learned a great deal and will, going forward, exercise caution in my choice of drink.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with alcohol and for creating this video so vividly. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 months ago and I'm in the process of changing my diet and that includes drinking alcohol.
I'm type 1 from 2011 and I found that Beer is like you eat bread....Sugar goes up. So I thy red wine and if it's good like Mavrud all will be OK. I have stomachace from white wine. I love Gin with sugarfree Tonic, I love Bulgarian Rakia (brandy), Whisky don't like Vodka. But for me, all concentrants are good. When i was yound my Blood sugar goes lower from concentrats, but not anymore ;) P.S. for people that said "alcohol makes you hungry, that isn't true, you just don't drink enouth ;)
Tks bro. Beer drinker here. My no 1 choice, however, whisky, sugar and caffein free coke on ice is my 2nd favourite so l'll switch to that permanently from now on...🤛🇿🇦
I buy my beer ( Pabst blue ribbon) 2 - 30 packs at a time, rarely do I drink less than 10 beers an evening, I eat a carnivore diet. I don't drink until 4:30 pm and go to bed between 1-2 am. don't know what my blood sugar is but I never get drunk as I have been doing this for 20+ years.
Great video. When I developed type 1 the first doctor asked what do I drink on weekends and I said vodka/coke. He said you'd have to give that up. I was devastated then he continued, you need to switch to vodka/diet coke. Most times my blood sugar stays flat on a night out with that combo but sometimes it rockets. No rhyme nor reason why it reacts off the charts once in a while. It mostly stays flat with spirits. This video is great. Keep them coming. Thanks!
Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar lower blood sugar so using either in a low sugar drink seems to be the best option. I do Vodka/club soda/lemon juice. Super light and gets the job done.
Great video, thank you,I'm type 2 and an every day drinker of 1/2 litre of vodka with 1/2 a litre of sugar free orange squash,it helps me forget and sleep,(mental health issues),Im down from a litre of vodka a day😊I'm trying so hard to keep my levels below 12.0 .these kinda video's I find very educational and helpful,😊
Very well done and logical presentation. My favorite drink is single malt scotch over ice, with only 2-3 ounces of scotch. One drink per day, at the end of the day with my wife of 57 years, sitting on our patio. I'm a 45 year type 1, and all my lab numbers are "incredibly good" according to my PCP and Endocrinologist. I love your show!
Great video! And finally someone understands what plain alcohol actually does regarding diabetes. A deeper explanation is that alcohol depletes a cofactor required by a pair of enzymes alcohol/acetylaldehyde dehydrogenase, which converts alcohol to acetic acid in two steps: ethanol -> acetylaldehyde -> acetic acid/acetyl-CoA. With light alcohol consumption you'll likely just end up slightly lower than usual going into the early hours of the morning. With heavier consumption, especially for regular drinkers who have effectively trained their liver to be better at metabolizing ethanol, you might actually notice an initial increase in your blood sugar or have a really hard time treating hyperglycemia. Cause the weird part, is that alcohol and its metabolite acetyl-CoA are molecules that can enter mitochondria and be shunted straight into the little engines running inside the powerhouse of the cell. It's such an efficient way to deliver chemical energy that your body will attempt to use it before glucose in muscles and your liver. In this state you'll see your sugar start going up for seemingly no reason. And if you're in a state where nothing needs the extra energy, all that acetyl-CoA is also the molecule needed for the first step of making fat ... which is why alcohol is super-unfriendly when trying to lose weight.
Interesting to study the blood sugar effects of alcoholic beverages. However, recent medical studies have shown that there is no safe level of consumption of alcohol (cancer, heart disease, brain and liver toxicity, etc.) so it's best to just not drink any alcohol.
Not my experience, moderate to lite beer and wine drinking I find is very healthy for me. Just water alone, it's ok, but not as healthy, I feel best with some quality lite beer sometimes. Sometimes better with water.
Thank you very very much. I do not have blood sugar issues, and I do not want them. Americans all around me are destroying their health with bad diets and no acceptance of their responsibility for self care. You sir are one of the great content providers of the world. You share from the heart, to change a life you will never know. Godspeed!
I have been Type 1 since 1996. I have been professionally brewing beer since 2009. There are many beers that have zero g of carbs. They also have calories from the alchol, but don't spike blood sugar. Beers like true Belgian saisons or wild fermented beers that are fermented dry. Same with traditional cider that is wild fermented also zero g of carbs. Drinking any alchol in heavy amounts will crash your blood sugar. Always in moderation and always with food. There is a reason late night kebab shops are busy for none diabetics! Also a reason why everyone feels better after a breakfast and glass of orange juice come morning 😂😂 Stay healthy and keep social as sitting worrying your life away is also not healthy for the head. These are great insights. Thank you so much for sharing! We should talk about creating a No Spike Brew for the Type One Talks crew:) Haha. Just kidding.
I am Type 2 and wear a CGM. I have noticed that most wines (including sweeter dry wines like Riesling) don't impact my blood sugar. Straight hard liquors like whiskey similarly don't cause a glucose rise. My favorite mixed drinks that don't impact my blood sugar are bloody mary, traditional gin martinis, and rum & diet coke. My wife and I have even gone on a couple of cruises where I was able to drink basically as much as I wanted so long as I stayed hydrated and ate properly.
Four days ago I just found out I was diagnosed diabetes and don’t know where to start. with a 386 two days ago I was 587 I just checked my self right now I’m at 354 I don’t have no one that has it diabetic so I’ve been watching your videos the past days
This video is incredibly insightful and helpful for anyone living with diabetes who enjoys the occasional drink. I appreciate how you shared your personal experiences and emphasized the importance of moderation and understanding how different types of alcohol impact blood sugar levels. It's fascinating to see the experiments with different drinks and how carbs, not alcohol itself, tend to cause spikes. Your stories, especially the ones about the dangers of severe lows, are eye-opening. Thank you for sharing these practical tips - it’s really empowering for diabetics to make safer choices!
I am a pre Type 2 diabetic and recently installed a Dexcom7 patch. I have seen high carb foods spike my blood to 340 mg/dl (if I can believe it). I find this video very useful as I need to find different foods that do not cause my blood sugar yo yo all over the place. Breakfast was two hours ago and I chose eggs. My blood sugar spiked from 155 to 215, But now my blood sugar has crashed to 87. Not being a Type 1, I am not concerned but I don't understand the crash from 215.
I had a lot of these symptoms and was convinced i was either pre-diabetic or stage 2....though Google and TH-cam didn't help, i visited my GP and had the blood tests which also included prostate and cholesterol, turns out my cholesterol levels were higher than normal, i changed my habits mainly my sweet tooth and started 30min faster paced walking every day...to date my cholesterol is now 3.5 after 4months and i feel so much better within myself, i actually look forward to the walks now come rain or shine
I used to wake up in the middle of the night with very low sugars but, ever since I got my Libre 2 I no longer have this problem. I set the low alarm to 75, I keep a bottle sugar pills, some fig newton cookies and some sugary granola next to my bed stand. Once the alarm goes off, I reach over and grab one or more of these, wolf it down and go back to sleep.
Been Type 1 since 9 yo, now 54. Learned during college years whiskey + diet cola was my fave drink due to how it had lowest impact on how I felt the next day. Also be sure to drink large glass of water before going to bed to reduce dehydration hangover. Thanks for confirming with data what I expected through trial and error.
This was a well considered and "sober" presentation. I have DM2 and generally stick to dry red wines, and with dietary constraints and exercise my A1C levels have dropped from 50 to 36. mmol.

Alcohol is always BAD. No moderation. Or is this again advertorial?!
Me too, same here. I'm from Czech heritage, as well.

Your channel has helped me out immensely so thank you so incredibly much
Hi how are you.?
Please explain to me what can I do to reach on that point? I have 9 now
What is your secret ???
As a prediabetic, I found it easier to stop drinking alcohol altogether. After 2 years of no alcohol I managed to keep my levels at or below 100.

Sugar is a deadly poison for the human race and it's time we stopped subsidizing sugar growers and tax the hell out of them. Just like tobacco.
Nah, watch out for "diet" stuff
Ive been a type 2 for 25 years was a harcore beer drinker but my blood sugar always went crazy. In my old age ive learned that i sip really good bourbons. And like your results i have no spike. Its got me apprciating bourbon and its history. Your channel is very informative keep up the good work
Yes they say straight bourbon or vodka and very infrequently
I'm type 1. I drink red wine most nights, and not just one glass. I never EVER, EVER, EVER touch beer. If I do that, I know I'll be chasing highs and lows all night. Helpful video. It is refreshing to see you being honest... I like to watch your sugar pixel during your videos...:)
Thank you so much! I do appreciate your kind feedback! Wine is fine!
I experiment just like this guy. I have pre-type 2.
I found that mixing Diet Ginger ale with regular ginger ale(ginger ale has less sugar than most drinks) and bourbon makes a really great drink.
Would you mind sharing the name of the wine you drink?
Is it dry? Looking for better options when having girls night. Thanks in advance!
Which wine do you drink? My fave spiked me badly. (Liberty creek Merlot)

@melaniestout2929 Any normal DRY 12-15% alcolohol red works for me. Be careful out on the town.
alcohol lowers gluconeogenesis. for people who do not inject insulin it can be helpful in moderation before going to bed.

Can i drink whisky or brandy wirh coke zero?

Jamiesons fresh lime and soda is my preferred blood sugar friendly cocktail. Simple and perfect!

Norway stores has LITE Ciders and Beers for diabetics. Taste is almost the same and it has about 2 carbs/100ml. WE NEED THIS EVERYWHERE!
I believe Michelob Ultra in the states is like this. There are a couple beers that are pitched as being "healthier" and "Ultra low carb" - so not for diabetics specifically, but same thing. :) They taste pretty awful though...
@@lisaelannaI live in the states and have drank ultra for years. I’m type 2 and it doesn’t affect my blood sugars at all.
Well the problem is that the alcohol content is so low you might just as well be drinking water or tea and that is how it tastes too.

Really? What about the supplement Artemisia vulgaris. I have so much trouble drinking tea regularly.

Great video. Really honest and very useful for all type 1s. Thanks.
And for type 2 also
If you're type 1 and want to drink the best choice, I've found, is light beer.
I've also reduced my diabetes meds, and my daily checks of glucose are not perfect but
The best alcohol is no alcohol

I got told in 1984 when I was diagnosed that alcohol has a lowering effect on blood sugar cus it stops the carbs being absorbed so less glucose going in to the blood stream. They even said if you have say 2 pints of lager then eat a bag of crisps. But I found this happens the morning after, or as you put a few hours later. I cud reduce the insulin used by 50% the next morning. Back then there was no cgm so it was often a bit precarious. With the libre 2 I have now its not a problem.
Consider Allulose as a sugar substitute. It is pure, measures similar to sugar, and tastes closer to sugar than any sweetener I’ve tried. 😎

Type 2 diabetic here for the last 18 years…really heavy drinker over many decades and never had an issue. I’m sorry to hear that happened to you.
OMG, I found my drink twin! 🤩 Whiskey and diet coke has always been my alcoholic drink of choice!
Oh which one was that?
al l three were not accurate the old fashion way is the best. He did a great test.
I doubt the swelling in the feet was due to the alcohol unless you aren't drinking enough water as swelling feet is the body trying to retain water. ✔️ I doubt the thc is the solution as it isn't hydrating you. ;)

Great job.
I have enjoyed Vodka & Sprite Zero. The outcome has little influence on my blood sugars. Moderation is the key.
Whiskey, dash of lime juice and soda..... Very refreshing.....diabetic for 20 years......👍👍👍
So what type of soda? Club soda? Cola? Sprite?
@@stevehildre5197 just plain aerated water..

Thanx for the video. I dont like Coke zero. I prefer whiskey+ice+soda Water. I tested with my glucose measurement device then I decided that whiskey is most better

Bless u 4 sharing. So appreciated
I switched to tonic water with a splash a ACV w/ice. My liver loves it.
Tonic is loaded with sugar.
@@JJG86 you're absolutely correct, I should have said "soda water" or "carbonated water". Last thing we need is more sugar. Cheers!
@@GrumpyOldGuy777 You can get sugar-free tonic, but it tastes horrible.
Great video & content, thanks a lot.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with alcohol and for creating this video so vividly.
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 months ago and I'm in the process of changing my diet and that includes drinking alcohol.
Thanks for keeping it real! Great video.
Thank you so much!
When i was yound my Blood sugar goes lower from concentrats, but not anymore ;)
P.S. for people that said "alcohol makes you hungry, that isn't true, you just don't drink enouth ;)
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
What about rum specially Captain Morgan that’s what I like to know
My favourite as well. It appears it's carb free after watching the video!
1 6 ounce glass.
2-3 corks of Capt Morgan
1-2 corks ACV (with mother).
Add diet coke as needed.
Purrfect!
T1D.
Thanks for sharing!
Whisky and this channel....my two new favorite things!
Yeah. Like THATS gonna happen. 😖
Not my experience, moderate to lite beer and wine drinking I find is very healthy for me. Just water alone, it's ok, but not as healthy, I feel best with some quality lite beer sometimes. Sometimes better with water.
I love my martinis, vodka/diet coke, and hard seltzers. They've made my life a lot easier since switching off from beer.

Thank you very very much. I do not have blood sugar issues, and I do not want them. You share from the heart, to change a life you will never know. Godspeed!
I bet you’re not as healthy as you think you are.
Slanj A Va! ✌😎
Best booze is no booze!
Four days ago I just found out I was diagnosed diabetes and don’t know where to start. with a 386 two days ago I was 587 I just checked my self right now I’m at 354 I don’t have no one that has it diabetic so I’ve been watching your videos the past days
Alcohol has nothing to offer to anybody, it’s poison

My favorite drink is a top shelf white tequila. I place it over ice and squeeze a lime in it. Perfect drink
I have DM2 and generally stick to dry red wines, and with dietary constraints and exercise my A1C levels have dropped from 50 to 36. mmol.
