I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the educational, personal experience videos you share. I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1968 when I was 15 months old. Today I have had T1 for over 57 years, and I am healthier than I have ever been.
I have been on the internet since the internet began... And I have never appreciated the T1 advice being given to the public until I found your videos. So thank you again for what you do.

@@TypeOneTalks I appreciate the way you can take medical terminology and nutritional information and translate it in to layman's terms for those who are just learning. I've been doing this since there was nothing more than a diet-by-sliding scale. And for years now I have been counting carbs - but I never understood the glycemic index until I watched your videos. That says a lot for your ability to make context easy for EVERYONE to understand. ❤ When you show your own personal experience BG grafts = Fabulous. Simply, you make everything from Insulin Pumps, CGMs or Vegetables easy to understand.

T2 is very different from T1.Because you have been diagnosed with T2 your blood sugars have been out of range for long enough to make your HBA1c high. If you have no problems with blood sugar control: your blood sugars are under control from your meds, you eat nothing or you are only measuring it the once in the morning.
Even if your T2 has progressed to the point where you are taking insulin, your body is insulin resistant and your (and my) pancreas probably still produces a fair amount of insulin. Depending on the amount of adipose tissue you carry and how much your muscles have decreased due to age your blood sugars will be affected.

I think fruit and veg is probably fine its what you put with it or how you cook it. Or if you have a salad before with vinaigrette apparently is a good hack for keeping your blood sugar stable. Raw food good ie salad and eating organic if you can afford. So baked potato fine chips less so. 😊

You get to the point, stick to the message, and have a soft voice that doesn't hurt to listen to for a long time. You are also logical and not as subjective as other people.

Fruits are my favorite foods, but I have to be careful because I am pre diabetic and insulin is not an option. A small kiwi will spike me 75 points, so I usually stick to berries, avocado, apples and small amounts of pineapple. I am very excited to try plums, apricots, and peaches to see if I can handle them. I will sprinkle flaxseed or other fiber to help reduce the spike. I really appreciate you going into depth with the veggies and how different ways to cook them help lower the spike and that raw veggies are better too. 50+ years of T1D experience here, and I confirm your video by my own conclusions.
Regarding spinach: eating calcium-rich foods like cheese along with high-oxalate foods such as spinach can help reduce the risk of kidney stones. Calcium binds with oxalate in the digestive tract, preventing it from being absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted through the kidneys where it can form stones.
I love spinach, but a good diet should always be varied.

This is an excellent presentation. It took me years to figure out even a little of this. I've never been as science-y and tend to add fatty things to my high spiking foods. I eat my apples with peanut butter on them. This may work better for me as a T2 than it would for a T1.
The one thing I have not looked into is the recent research on the part where different individuals have different blood sugar reactions to a particular food. And I am wondering if this varies over time because bananas bother me much more than they used to. I think there is a name for the fact that individual responses to the same glycemic food but I can't pull it out of my brain now and Dr. Google isn't helping. For example: apples are pretty good for me also but there may be some people who react to apples like I do to bananas.

I'm curious if you deduct the fiber and use only net carbs when calculating your carb count. I've heard a lot of mixed information about this, that net carb ratios are more for people adhering to a low carb diet or for type 2 - and initial diagnosis carb counting was all done with gross carbs for T1D. It's something I've considered and struggle with calculating carbs for my T1D kids, I feel sometimes I need to calculate differently than the recommended gross carbs in order to not experience extreme low sugar events. I also feel silly learning about the differences the effect of carbs from raw to cooked, this is the first time I recall hearing that. For those calculations do you use raw weight (pre-cook) for the carb counts or the post cooking weight. Thanks for bringing useful information about lived experience to the conversation.

Another amazing video, quite objective and scientific. How does eating multiple foods affect the combined GI? Obviously if you eat foodA (10carbs) and foodB (5 carbs) you have eating 15 carbs. But does GI stack up like this too? I assume rather than adding them up it's just the highest? So foodA (10GI) and foodB (5GI) you've had max 10GI with foodA?

Hi long-time listener I was wondering have you heard of sugar defender 24 it said to give her these dead zombie cells that are strapped in the pancreas from creating insulin. Have you done any studies into this? And is it true? Your reply would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Tom, thanks for very interesting data and presentation. One question: how much of your 'spike' graphs is due to the food or fruit intake, and how much is caused (or offset) by bolus?? If you move both variables (change food and change insulin dose), the results could be quite random, depending on time of pre bolus, what else you ate, and so many other factors.
All the best and no need to slow down your speach

That is a great question! There are definitely many factors going into this. I generally try my best to eliminate all other factors that might play a role, except bolus. As you correctly noted, bolusing vs not bolusing may have quite an impact. When you listen carefully you will probably hear me giving an indication of any bolus that took place. For foods where I know blood sugar impact is minimal (e.g. avocado, broccoli, cucumber, etc) I did not bolus at all. For foods where I knew blood sugar impact would be moderate to high, I did bolus (and for most of those even prebolused). I tried to be as transparent as I could about it in the video but I realize it might not be 100% clear in all cases. I know most non-insulin dependent viewers don't really care about this "nuance" so I tried to limit the information on this. But in general, as I believe I indicated in the video, I do believe that us, insulin dependent, need to pre-bolus appropriately, especially for yellow/red bucket. My prebolus would be up to 20 minutes in some instances and I would still see a spike. Hope this provides some more clarity.

There's an evolutionary reason bright fruits generally have a high sugar content. First of all, fruits evolved to taste good because when they are dispersed they don't have to compete for resources with other seeds. So the sweeter fruits were eaten by animals which dispersed the seeds. The sweeter the fruit, the more they were eaten and the more they were dispersed.
Then, when a fruit is brighter it gets noticed by animals more and gets eaten more and dispersed more. So the brighter fruits became sweeter.

I find people are not always receptive to the truth. They have to see for themselves. I know why they feel someone is telling them what to eat. Just suggestions. Have a great week!

Sorry if I missed this but when are you bolusing? Prebolusing, bolusing while eating or correction to bring down? Are you blousing for all of them based on net carbs or just the ones over 5g net carbs? If you are taking a bolus what type of insulin are you using?
