  • This is a tour through everything you can click on with the classic EQ interface. I'm playing in the EQClassic Auditor server which uses the original EQ Trilogy client. **This is not something you can do in Project 1999.

    Medding with the book open, taking all visibility away in rathe mtns... Turning up the volume to hear things coming.... Classic

    The fun of looking in the book while meditating then being smacked by a mob.

    I played this game with that screen for way longer than I wish to admit. For some reason it took me awhile to embrace all the extra screen space on my 19 inch monitor lol

    OMG The ping/latency indicator. WOWWWWW. Flashbacks of seeing it creep from yellow to red, meaning LD was impending. Memories

      Yeah, I remember seeing that and sitting down, standing up, jumping around, trying to do anything and everything to stay online.

      That black screen with white letters:
      “YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED”

      It's just hidden. F11 should toggle it on/off. Works in EQ2 too.

    I thought I remembered all of this, but definitely forgot a few! It’s such an easy game when all the mystery is gone, but near impossible in this state and with all the unknown at the time!

    The StoneUI mod for Project 1999 is a near-perfect recreation of this UI. It even includes a 4:3 aspect ratio option. A couple of buttons like the Persona button don't work and the fonts aren't quite the same because it's still running on the Titanium client, but it's incredibly close.

    • @jimoshirakka
      @jimoshirakka  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does the class icon change with your class? I know that's been a tricky one. And is the class icon animated?

    • @Justin-op8us
      @Justin-op8us หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jimoshirakka Yes on both counts, although you have to edit a line in one of the included XML files to get the animation for your specific class (which is really easy since all you have to do is literally change a number value).
      Other than that, there are certain trilogy client elements that simply don't work, like the Persona button (which was sorta useless, to be fair).

    i started in 99 just before velious. i swear i remember being able to loot another persons corpse if they gave you permission to do so. when i talk to people in p99 no one else remembers that. was on a pve server

      Sounds like Mandela effect to me to be honest. I do remember when I was a kid I tricked my brother into thinking that you can loot the qeynos guards armor when you kill them. He found a level 5 guard, killed him, and then beat me up because all he got was negative faction. Sucker. haha

    Love this! Played EQ from the spring of '99 till '04, and i will always hate Blizzard for taking me away from this game....stupid world of warcraft, which im happy to say i don't play anymore! But i was lured by friends at the time and i regret it to this day! BTW i never EVER heard of that posting board lol. It was not in the original launch so im guessing this is umm....beta stuff? i don't know. Interesting though :)

    • @jimoshirakka
      @jimoshirakka  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The message board is not beta only, and I remember it well when I was a kid playing during kunark / velious. I can understand them doing away with it. One more thing to moderate and make moderation tools for. Also people never used them. It felt a little pointless with the chatrooms and internet forums existing in parallel.

    I'm busy playing Meridian 59 right now but have always wanted to play EverQuest. I hear about project 1999. Once I decide it is time I will check my options. I am wanting as close to launch experience as possible. I googled EQClassic and it is looking great. What would you recommend for a puritist? I actually love the clunk and alpha esthetic side of things.

    • @jimoshirakka
      @jimoshirakka  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ok so the problem with EQClassic is that one guy is working on it (Harakiri) when he has free time. It's been in the works since 2007, and it's been stuck in an 'auditor phase 2' for about 2-3 years now. However, this is the absolute 100% purest experience you can get to Everquest as it was, because it is literally using the cd client for Everquest Trilogy on custom made server code built from the ground up (it's not EQEmu). P99, I actually don't have too much experience modding to try and make it feel more classic. This original slate UI is impossible to reproduce given the updated engine that P99 uses (Titanium client). I believe P99 works by injecting customizations into the client to make it more classic, and then there are of course default options which they disable like maps. I'm not a subject matter expert on P99 though. That's what I can say.

      I read through everything I could on the website. I was shocked to see they weren't accepting help. Unfortunate. It makes me wonder if it will ever be finished. I have seen other projects fall off and the original torch career refused to release the project to others because they may decide to work on it in the future :P He is refusing donations so his heart is in the right place at least. Any ways though for now would you recommend EQEmu or P99?@@jimoshirakka

    • @jimoshirakka

      The transparent version was available when Velious came out, then Luclin came out with its own UI after that.

    • @proceduraldad2578
      @proceduraldad2578 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I never heard of bards doing this back in 1999. Maybe I was just a noob though. The playerbase is much more advanced now than it was back then.

    • @Wint3rshad3
      @Wint3rshad3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@proceduraldad2578 You know you are probably right. The swarm kiting probably came later on most likely kunark era. I miss the old days where everything was largely unknown , just people figuring things out and sharing their findings. Way different from current eq and other games where everything has to be meta.

    • @scotthughes3721

      I don't remember if it was 1999 or 2000 when I created a bard to try it, but it was incredibly difficult because the camera positions were so terrible. Kiters always used the same areas to kite because they needed to know the layout of the terrain as well as pathways of roaming mobs. I failed miserably at kiting as a bard, so I created a druid and had more success there with quad kiting, but I played too many characters to develop the skills needed to kite effectively back then. It was doable, but hard.
      Keep in mind that bard melody didn't exist, so bards had to manually activate their songs every 3-4 seconds to twist them (using their left hand on the song hotkey numbers, numlock on to autorun forward, and your right hand on the mouse changing the direction the character was running (circular, so mouse constantly moving). Basically any surprise encounter got you killed. Exp loss without rezzes too, since clerics who are sitting LFG for hours waiting for groups aren't very happy with people soloing instead of grouping. Makes for costly bribes for rezzes, especially since it would take at least 20+ minutes to rez anyone.
      If you wanted a rez, your tell better have been something like this, "Hey, could you give me a rez please? I already dragged my corpse to XYZ for your convenience, a wiz/druid is waiting to port you there, and I've got Xplat for you."
      Sure, you could meet up with some great people on your rez request, but more likely that generic rez request turns out to be a 3 hour long slog where you yourself died 5 times and are still naked, trying to get your own first corpse back, while the rez requester decided to just log for dinner and get his corpse back later (7 day timer).
      Also, keep in mind there weren't any websites online back then to teach you anything about the game. You only had forums or other players in game to learn from, XYZ coordinates to guide you to specific locations... There was a lot of dying trying to learn to kite.
