Zoneless Classic Everquest Qeynos To Freeport Run

  • By utilizing the community-created Lantern toolset, I have re-created the classic Everquest continent of Antonica in the Unity engine. Unlike classic Everquest this version has no zones! However there are no NPCs or monsters and and there is a lot of missing or broken content and features. This is purely a hobby endeavor and this project is not available for download as doing such would violate Everquest's EULA.
If you want to learn more about Lantern, check out its website:

This was awesome. I've done this run a few times on P99, but the nostalgia as a kid, in 1999 or 2000, meeting a fellow dwarf around level 9 in ButcherBlock. We both traveled together to Freeport. It was amazing, and fun. Not the longest journey but I will remember that journey with him for the rest of my life.

What a lovely memory, I too was about 11 years old when EQ released and will also forever remember my first trip from Faydwer to Antonica - I was a wood elf warrior, I especially remember it because I had awful internet and I am a great distance from USA. The first time I hit the zone line to go into OOT on the boat I took so long to zone that by the time I zoned in the boat had left and my character had fallen off and died to drowning. I was completely distraught as I had no idea how I was going to get my gear back while getting back to the boat etc. Especially that if I tried to zone into OOT again with the same internet I'd just die again, think I had a full bronze armour set at the time. I cant recall exactly how I resolved it, whether I got my gear back with a friendly necromancer's help and a new internet service or if I rolled a new wood elf warrior as I wasn't sure how to recover my character with no gear. Was probably a sign from Tunare to re-roll druid cause warriors are hard as fuck as a first character, let alone a wood elf warrior xD. Unfortunately I struggled for years after that as a Wood elf Warrior but the struggle is what made EQ so worth to me.

Oh my, this was surprisingly emotional. I played EQ from launch to around 2003 when my closely knit guild dissolved as members drifted apart into other mmos. Here's to you Eternal Crusaders of Norrath from Fennin Ro. I was also game guide Ailron for a few years in case anyone remembers me.
Its humorous to me to finally see grass in EQ as I remember being very excited at the announcement of an mmorpg called "Horizons" because the screenshots showed ... grass! What a silly thing to get excited over.😁

@Chucktropolis, EQemu dev + OpenGL C++ programmer here. Amazing job.@ 14:00 you explain how in the MySQL database each set of mobs depends on the zone its in with it's xyz coordinates. For this zoneless experiment, you can have triggers to determine which zone the player is in. Then use that set of mobs to generate those specific monsters. Of course the coordinates would have to be completely re-worked.
Also I would use something called tessellation shaders to load assets depending where the player is in, and use LOD (level of detail) accordingly. Very interesting and great job! 👍👍

I think a good starting place would be to create a translation from a sampling of points on the original zones to the final locations on the combined map. Then you could import the data and translate it to its new location. Obviously it would require manual cleaning, especially in zones where their shape is significantly different but it would be a good starting point.

People hated the new Freeport because aesthetically, it looked nothing like original EQ. It felt like a new game in that zone.

I ran from Qeynos to Freeport. It took me some hours and I made incredible stops on the way including navigating the waterlines in the Karanas, to HHK Pickclaws. I met friends. I hugged the zone in Kithicor fearing the undead. I routed around a Giant in West Commonlands! ....All to arrive in Freeport to obtain my prize: Large Banded Mail for 1PP/AC. Which was significantly cheaper than the Qeynos price.

This is really cool. You did a great job. The Kithicor situation is one that I thought about back in the day. There is just such a massive climb going west to east and nothing going the other direction. As a kid I always imagined there was a very tall lift that kind of got clipped out as being pointless for us to waste time traversing. I probably came to this conclusion because I wished there was one in East Karana rather than making us take that long ramp.

I'm in awe of the effort this represents; it's amazing. To answer one of your questions, though; a graphically upscaled but otherwise identical EQ wouldn't have a lot of draw for me. Video games as an art are a product of their times, and while I've tried to go back and play on Daybreak's servers, and others like P99, I find I don't have the tolerance for the actual gameplay that I did 25 years ago. One of the big draws of EQ Next, to me, was their desire to update the game systems to a more modern design. The world of Norrath, and the larger game design of a world that had adventurers, but where my character is not The Chosen One, or some notable figure from the very outset, appeals to me much more than where MMO game design went, down the path of long-running player character story lines. Can we stop washing up on the shore after a boat accident, only to find that we've been chosen by a goddess to save the world from epic evil? The world and NPCs claim that I am the last surviving member of the Hong Moon school of martial arts, yet there are literally thousands of other people in the world who are ALSO the last surviving member of the same school. "Story" in MMOs is a huge problem, and one Norrath didn't have. It has poisoned so many of the later games, and continues to do so into the future, based on upcoming titles.

To me, a game with the mechanics of EverQuest with the graphics of Guild Wars or ESO would be ideal, like your comment on Qeynos having more roads and such. I feel like one thing EQ2 did wrong was it tried to model the old stuff in a newer game but it they did it by completely redesigning everything. It was foreign and felt like it wasn't EverQuest. It's the gameplay of everquest that I like - The classes, the kiting, the trains.. it was amazing. My favorite aspect of EverQuest was the mystery to it. How to get out of my starter city, leveling up to go to new areas, etc. I was actually terrified of Befallen, West Commonlands, South Ro because of the threat they posed. You HAD to level up, or run as fast as you can.

First of all, this is so freaking cool dude! Please put out more updates!!!
Your mid-video question was whether anyone wanted an EQ as just an upgraded graphical version with some new stuff. I want what you have done + better graphics and an option for separate texture packs (including player models). So those old-school p99 boys can enjoy what they want. Your idea to incorporate old-school lore into the OG game is fantastic. That would allow you to feel like you're playing OG EQ but give you new things to visit and learn (we have p99 already). This feels like OG EQ to me (at least how I remember it as a kid) and seeing your design choices/ideas are very exciting. Your map design feels massive yet familiar and as long as that carries over with other design implementations. You will have a big audience.

    • @chucktropolis9560
      @chucktropolis9560  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually considered that at first. Biggest reason I shrank those down and not scale everything else up was level of effort required. It would have taken at least 3x work terrain sculpting and prop placement to fill out the continent to match the Karanas' scale. Pretty sure I would have gotten frustrated and/or bored and abandoned the attempt.

I always just imagined the tunnel at the back of Blackburrow was really long and eventually came out to Everfrost, kind've like a travel transition more than a directly linked zone.
Also re: Cease & Desist - the big difference is also that you are not selling/providing the assets and are using your own code. Look at it this way: If you but a chess set, and your friend buys a chess set, it is not illegal to use those pieces that you obtained legally and own yourself in physical space to make up your own game with your own rules. While you do not "own" the files per se just from buying or downloading the game you do have backup rights due to copyright law and can store/copy/etc. those files as long as you don't redistribute them/for personal use.
Given that game clients are freely available these days anyone can download it, code something that is 100% their code and ownership, and simply point it to those files.. Which were not prepackaged with your code in any way. Again, think of it like two people buying a chess set each and then downloading (or even purchasing) a set of custom rules from someone else. There's no theft going on. That's also why lantern doesn't host the "asset bundles", as that would be distributing the actual copyrighted material.

Impressive and cool to see, but if you go further and add mobs you really need to add a 100% memblur with few second delay on re-aggroing or some equivalent that simply stops mobs from crossing the zone line, to emulate the leashing effect zone lines had. Every place where a zone line would have been needs to act like that, or you fundamentally change a major aspect of the game play.
Anyone running across a zone line should have zero worry that a mob from the previous zone is following them, not to mention that without this you would now have essentially any mob model and behavior possible to end up in any zone which would have all sorts of implications - imagine dragging a much higher level mob a few zones away into Freeport and the guards can't easily kill it like mobs that are only in the newbie zone in front of them.
Although seeing Naggy pulled to Neriak or Freeport or the EC tunnel would have been pretty funny.

I've thought many times of recreating both Innothule Swamp as a Dark Souls style adventure for a Troll freshie out in the swamps getting his ass beat over and over. Also thought about recreating Gloomingdeep as tactical strategy game.. Maybe I need to get in contact with some of these folks.

I really like Blackburrow being moved to the North Karana area. In a live game I think the problem bigger than that of the run time would be the spike in monster levels from NK to Blackburrow. The gnolls patrolling outside BB were pretty low, while in NK you have lions, mist wolves, griffons, and hill giants.
It’d make more sense to bump up the difficulty of BB maybe 5-10 levels. Though it’d really isolate lower level Barbarians from Qeynos, I think thematically it’d help drill home the idea that the Barbarians really are in a harsh land isolated from everyone else

The Karana zones are supposed to be huge and relatively flat. They are plains. Adding more/bigger trees while simultaneously shrinking the zones ruins what they are intended to be. A graphics update could be cool, but this particular decision isn't a good one. Kithicor is also supposed to be extremely dark, the new version just makes it like any other generic semi-forest/semi-mountain area.

I know I'm a bit late to this party.. but having made this run a few times on the TLP servers, and also discovering it in VR.. this hit home... Grew up in Kunark personally (joined shortly after its release and made the foolish mistake of being a lizard for my first and ONLY character for decades..) But damn...
This whole thing would be amazing.. I honestly wish Daybreak would just take the whole game, merge as much as they can directly into the client, and then release a single player capable version.. I mean, the Mercs already basically make that a thing, just make it possible to have more than one and make them considerably weaker to accommodate a more accurate experience (seriously, mercs are effing OP).. But could anyone else imagine playing the timeline on your own time, without the bogging down of servers and the bugs they bring?
fu&^, just port it all into another engine like here and give it it's own story that progresses across the continents or something even...

Man... Love the 1.5 upgrades! Especially the EqNext variations. Very subtle and not overwhelming. Great taste! One suggestion. Don't make every building/town a 1.5 upgrade. Keep some fully OC and others 1.5. Or tone down your 1.5s a bit more and add to all buildings.

I have Unity 4.x. If you would like another person to help out with assets drop a reply. As for the karana's I would think of NEWS as a circle. And each zone as a quarter cone meeting up somewhere in the center. The run speed is fine. The new freeport and commanland in live - why we hate it. No Color. Its all tan and it looks like S**T. You did a beautiful job. It looks updated and looks classic.

This is only a hobby thing I'm doing with the Lantern toolset, so I'm not actually soliciting help. I wouldn't turn any down if it fell in my lap though. You are more than welcome to drop onto the LanternEQ discord and volunteer to help out. Chances are anything new you add will find its way into what I am working on.

I like both classic layout with improved graphics, and also trying to add to the original and fill in the blanks to make it feel fuller. Pull from the lore and figure out how to make the world more full.

I think you improved the original just with the new tree models everywhere more than the development team ever did with the various zone revamps they did. Most of the zone revamps are good (hate Freeport), but they only affect small areas which makes them incongruous with the rest of the game world.
The proposed Qeynos described near the end sounds a lot like Sanctus Seru, or perhaps Halls of Honor.
I liked how you could see over the hills in Commonlands and spy on Desert of Ro. However, I thought the same view of Nektulos was odd. Specifically the trees are too big for what the apparent distance should be, creating the impression I was looking into the next area of a theme park rather than into a different area of a much larger landscape. There was also an issue that the trees seen from the distance in Nektulos and from close by in Commonlands seem a little too aligned to a grid pattern.

I would pay a premium to play a remastered version of everquest.
    2000 players x 30 dollars a month = 60,000 dollars a month.
•A zoneless version of Queynos, fully populated and ready to play inside of.
•Testrun, proof of concept, and pending approval of daybreak
    •Get approval by daybreak
•Zoneless everquest project becomes a kickstarter.

I love qverquest. I even leveled a high elf cleric up to level 12, on P99.
But classic everquest needs a new engine. It needs new models with more polygons. New textures.
    Increased render distance.

I think this is the first time i've ever seen the "map" of EQ splayed out in all its broken glory th-cam.com/video/87C15li3VAY/w-d-xo.html. The break point between ferrott and Innuthlue swamp is insane, as well at the crazy gap where runnyeye, misty, and rivervale try to connect to kithkor. The arena as well makes utterly no sense. You mentioned the run speed of the character just before the pass to HHP. I did some rought math. 4 steps a sec, each human steps is about 2.5 feet, then adding up the time in the video....115.38 miles.....and given that a human moves at 5-8 MPH.....no chance a human could make that run in the amount of time the model did....it's magic!
