EverQuest P99 Remembering the Real Classic EverQuest in 2022

EverQuest is as Classic as Classic Oldschool MMOs come and Project 99 or P99 EQ is the pinnacle of experiencing EverQuest in it's true classic form. Playing EverQuest on Live has many benefits, but feeling like it did back in the day is not one of them. Fortunately, as I'm sure you know, we have the option to play EverQuest P99 which is an officially sanctioned private server that allows us to play EverQuest as it once was. I've been playing Joe Leonard's NeverGrind Online he is developing, videos on that incoming and a link to the project in the description down below, but it got my juices flowing and I wanted to play some P99, so I fired it up, link in the description for the easiest download and install of EverQuest P99 by the way, head to the video link and check it's description for everything you need to get going. And now let's see what happened on my first night as Drankendor the Dwarf in EverQuest P99.

So I fired up a dwarf on the Green Server on EverQuest P99 and began stumbling my way through Kaladim trying to remember where the zone line was to enter Butcherblock and eventually found my way. First thing I noticed, and let me know in the comments if you know what I mean, the game somehow looks more crisp and the textures more vivid in P99 than on EverQuest Live. It could be my imagination and the culmination of the classic music and knowing what I was in for, or it could somehow look different because of the changes that have happened over the years on the live side. But once out in Butcherblock, I found someone's dead corpse immediately and cried before it and then I started doing what any good level 1 dwarf would do : I started killing some low level mobs. And then quickly learned my lesson and got slaughtered by a level 2 spider that poisoned me and after recovering all my starter equipment from my corpse, decided to start pressing C to con things before I willy nilly start attacking them. This is EverQuest P99 after all, time to start behaving like it.
So carefully I start killing a ton of mobs that I hope will drop gear and phat loots such as the goblin Whelps and the skeletons and resting in between to stay alive. Then I took a second to admire and appreciate the stone dwarf carving atop the entrance to Kaladim and thought to myself, why don't they make MMOs this good anymore. Then I remember Visionary Realms IS making an MMO this good called Pantheon Rise of the Fallen and we are a day closer to that launch and so I kill lots more mobs in celebration.

Games like Ultima Online and Everquest were the grand-daddy's to all current and future MMO's, and will always have a very special place in my heart.
I love meeting younger folks experiencing P99 for the first time and falling in love with it like us old timers did back in 1999
I miss this game at this exact time period so much. My girlfriend and I used to play for hours after school. Now I have a career, wife and 4 kids. No time to play but I love watching these clips and reminiscing!!!! Thanks… that was 22-23 years ago. Sheesh. I vividly remember us camping J boots and fish bone earrings. HA!!!!
P99 is amazing and free. The begining is hard but it worth the investment cause the community and game itself is very rewarding. Thx for bringing light to p99 again :)

Yes, I've seen so many good things on classic MMO servers over the years, when the game is difficult, people tend to behave better
P99 is gold. I always scratch my head when people from this era play on the official server.
idk, i perfer live because well its actually supporting the game i love. p99 is great n all but i fell after 2 years of only velious, its kinda stale. with blue now on its 7th year, what hasnt been done or accomplished if u committed the 7 years to jus velious and 11 years over all original. live has it correct, year cycles of tlps, one year standard next year gimmick. so this year should be a standard n i think a 2 to 3 year total classic only tlp with merging to agnarr at end would be a great idea.
I started playing the 3rd day after launch in 1999. Not even a little part of me wants to go back to that time. Maybe those that missed the Verant days do. 🤷🏼♂️

Great video, Nathan. I've mostly avoided p99 because I *know* I don't have the time to make it a truly rewarding experience for myself but I'm so glad it exists for people that want it. I love how much painstaking work they put into recreating that experience. I think it was a great move for the emulator server and for darkpaw when they officially recognized p99 which kind of secured it's future (around the time other rogue servers were being shut down.)
I have always wanted to try out P99, hopefully the servers will still be around when I finally have the time to.
This is such a great video! This game inspired my venture into the career of Software Engineering and I've been coding for 23 years now; I have EQ to thank for pushing me towards making it a profession. Keep serving up this goodness to the MMO community as many people have never had a chance to enjoy this, so this is the second-best experience for them.

Man I used to camp one of those merchants with my Druid. Everquest changed when they introduced they spell that increased Mana regen.
Everquest franchise is the best in my opinion it marked me for life loved it unfortunately havent played any of them lately i had to take time off of it and try new things Minecraft etc played wow too but quited after Legion been trying different games but everquest is one i would surely get back into anyway great video its always good knowing people keep old gold alive keep it up and also nice video and informations i have watched this channel before it was about vanguard another great mmo and this time i subscribed because great content and makes much more sense than some other channels out there good work.
Even though I have some high lvl toons (not 60 yet), I always come back to explore some of the zones. I have a lvl 51 druid so I can port to most places and run around free. : )
I’ve been playing on p99 and have realized it’s just the best mmo released to date.
I know everquest since it was released in 99/2000 but, I only played it from 2021 thanks to this fantastic server that is project 99 I have a huge respect for the guys who create this server they have just giving the experience of knowing what it was like to discover and play everquest in 1999 just thanks for using ! project 99 is a emerald in the vastness of the internet

Still the best version imo. I think the color pallet and low-fidelity graphics are somehow more immersing. The way the stats work is epic.

Monitors are way better than back in the day... I played on a 21" Sony Trinitron CRT and it was the best you could get... Modern HDTVs, even 10 year old ones make the game look way way better than it ever could have on a CRT.
I play on blue server 3-4 times a week. Absolutely love it and the community. I'm only a lvl 19 wiz but it's a blast!

Nathan at 6:26 you made a powerful statement that reignited my anticipation for Patheon: Rise of the Fallen. Would you consider making a video or collabing with the devs for some updated content? Of course, I want it to remain a surprise but now I'm itching for more Pantheon!

I played through until max level and killed all mobs on p99 blue and recently went to the TLP mischief server. The immersion is not there, no one does any quests, no one cares about getting into the game very much, not much cooperation, bot teams all over etc. Nothing like the payoff and memories available in the original game.
Hoping pantheon can capture the original formula.

I'm playing on mischief and I'm having a blast, you should have found a guild. Were always grouping, leveling alts, helping people with things etc. Thing is TLPs launch a new expansion every couple months so theres no time to do all the side stuff you pretty much only have time for raids to gear up as much as you can til the next expansion.
It's pretty much speed running EQ.
I agree that p99 has it's own vibe and magic to it, but being permanently stuck in velious is nightmare fuel to me. It's so bland and raid encounters are so bare bones tank and spank.
I played and streamed to 50 and did some classic raiding on TLP but for the journey I do like that P99 magic
@@sweetfry I am in a leading guild, I raid all the content weekly. My point is that the speed with which 'accomplishments' come is so fast they become much less meaningful. The original formula of a slower, more challenging set of accomplishments I feel was much more meaningful.

I wish they would just do a remake in unreal engine. They dont need to get ambitious like landmark/EQnext, just get rid of the spaghetti code, with unreal, and give us a beautiful aesthetic remake of Everquest 1

great video, never played everquest but can still see that this game was a true MMORPG, thats why i am worried about the RIOT mmo, such a big company that has all the money and time but will probably end up with the most boring MMO ive ever seen..... our only hope truly is Pantheon Rise of the Fallen to get ANY CLOSE to the old MMORPG spirit.

The only real way to replay Everquest. However, the installation is a serious pain, lol. Usually I give up after I mess up while logging in at some point. I wish it were set up easier, though maybe that's only an issue I have. This is as close to the real EQ as you can get, the Daybroke servers are far too stat-bloated for my liking, and that's likely to never change. A real TLE server would have to be completely divorced from current servers to ever lure me back.
If you follow that link in the description the install is SUPER easy and it comes with the texture packs that really make it pop and a better UI to load
I love retro games like ps1 ,ps2, old school runescape. It really looks like runescape took influence from this. I remember being around 6 wanting too play this but never had access too a computer. This is so cool 2022 and can finally try it, just wish I had people too play with, nice review bro! Do I try this one or the official one? ( I'm a noob )

I just started on p99 last month
I'm okay with not having a huge population. I play ffxi religiously and its one of the smaller MMOs and older MMOs that is still healthy and thriving. However, when too many players are on a server, it can lead into some negative experiences. So I'm okay with having a well balance server population vs a huge population.
Hopefully the guys whom are creating pantheon is in it for the love and not the residual outcomes albeit servers do cost money to upkeep. Perhaps supporters and their monthly subscription would be enough to keep it running. BUT there are other cheaper alternatives like hosting their servers through a cloud base service like Microsoft Azure.
Soon as sponsorship starts to dig their hands into where their hands should not be, the who game could change. History do repeat itself; I just hope its not the case for Pantheon.

Did the change or fix the camera settings, cause that looks a lot better than it used to be. I remember vividly fighting the camera in EQ, at least while traveling cause otherwise I played mostly in first person.
Hmm I didn’t have any issues, so maybe it had been fixed and I just don’t remember, but I can say I had no issues

Does P99 have the very dark nights that Live EQ brightened up many years ago ? It used to be really really creepy to be in Kithichor forest at night. Then one day I logged in to EQ and it was not dark any more. More like dusk, the entire night.

They are pretty dark (for humans) but not as dark as they were on release. You can play as human at night without a light source, but it will be tough.
At 1:24 there's a dive animation.. how did I play this game for 6 years straight from 1999 to 2005 and never notice there was a dive animation??? what?? I never played as a dwarf though.. is this dive animation in for all races?? my mind is blown

Hey i want to switch from cs:go and mwII to an mmo for life because egoshooters are becoming boring for me.
Should i rather waste my life playing oldschool runescape, guild wars 2, tibia, ultima outlands or Everquest P99 ? To be honest, graphically, Everquest P99 looks superior. So cozy and reminiscent of better times.
We all know Oldschool Runescape will still be around in 20 to maybe even 50 years from now. But what about Everquest P99? How much longevity does this game offer? Servers will be there forever and playerbase too?
always been a gameplay > graphics person but i kinda draw the line at EQ graphics haha. I didnt get to play it back then. But I do enjoy FFXI (classic server) which took direct inspiration from this game.

It keeps saying DB error invalid password, I created 3 different accounts with 3 different names and 3 different emails with different passwords, I had my father login to my account on his computer to make sure it wasn’t my password and he logged in so what’s the issue

I would start playing p99 right now if I knew there would be other players to group with. Solo eq is not viable.
That texture pack looks weird. The grass is much different.
I couldn't play being stuck in velious forever, sounds like hell to me. Boring raid bosses with no interesting mechanics.
Understandable
If you treat the game in a more relaxed way, it becomes quite amazing. That means having something else to do while you need downtime. Like reading a book IRL, studying, talking to friends in chat, etc.
But tbh the massive downtime is rare and known, like when you know you're going to the boat to/from Qeynos Docks.
It's a game where it's very immersive, but also requires predictable breaks, like going afk after every solo fight to regen. I will do some work or walk to the kitchen for a drink and come back regen'd.
But yea, I initially took an approach of alt-tabbing during my lvl 1 fights bc they took a bit, and doing that kindof created a super relaxed atmosphere for me even when I stopped to focus 100% on immersion.
Also I told myself "Immediately quit the moment the game asks me to waste my time." Which gave me 0 worries it would suck my life, be boring, or be a grind. That made the experience a lot better.
As for Raids? I never raided in EQ. Raids IMO are dumb and boring af in most games (the few I have done).
I played P1999 for the solo nostalgic experience up until I hit the moment where it wasted my time and I wasnt having fun. Which didnt happen (I quit for other reasons unrelated to the game.) I would still be playing if my wife would've joined me, but the game is just too old for new players who dont have that nostalgia or hardcore desire.
EQ had a sortof meanningful difficulty and lack of Bind on Pickup/Equip transforms a game to become amazing. Tree of Savior has no gear binding and so it feels like you own NFT's (something tangibly real) when you have an item. UO was like this too, but in UO everything decayed or could be lost on death so it negated many of those positives.
EQ felt like a MMO Roguelike. And the fact you could get a high lvl weapon or piece of armor at lvl 1 was based. That type of "cheating as a form of gameplay" was a fun challenge all on its own.

EverQuest will always be the golden age in my mind, because of the community and social aspect of the game. Strongly hoping Pantheon will take over that mantle, so far it looks promising.

Helpful and kind during the journey of leveling up, I have heard there are some elitists in the raiding on p99 but I guess that’s to be expected for those that have been doing raid content on a game of this age for so long

Gonna be honest eq1 is one of those games you must really hate ur life to play.
Obviously the magic of eq1 is not resonating with you. Maybe it's because you can not accept the graphics? The world is sooo deep in EQ and even with bad graphics it feels way more like a real world than everything else i played after it.
Woth all tve new technology like unreal this is one of the clumsiest looking games i have seen, the first EQ was thousand percent better
