    Oh, and I would really like to have one of those pens. I like the vintage-y look, especially the way the name is impressed into the barrel.

    I have a Conway Stewart 388 pen which is almost identical to look at, except they are a lever fill pen. The colour of the cap and barrel are exactly the same in green marbled effect. What really surprises me is that these Conway Stewart pens can be bought very cheaply second hand and, by a good pen restorer, can be as good as new. The Winston is very expensive, but there are very similar alternatives on the market at very affordable prices. Conway Stewart no longer exists as a pen manufacturer, which is unfortunate.

    That pen is to die for in the best possible sense. The resin 06.38 - so beautiful, and just the finish. It's good that the pen has gone to someone who will cherish it and understand it and no doubt talk to it!

    Sorted the problem with a gentle use of the finest micromesh and a lot of care. Starts perfectly every time now and is a joy to use, smooth, wet and springy!

    My favorite review thus far ! Anyway you could possibly review the following: The Shaeffer Franklin, The Monteverde Benito, The Pilot Hirohito, and my favorite pen of them all.. The Pelikan Adol.... well you get the idea ! ;). Also, I was wondering if this would write in France ? Will it write on the seas and oceans ? will it write with growing confidence and growing strength in the air ? one thing is for sure though, this pen will never surrender ! :)

    What an amazing pen! I have now just found a grail pen, that due to their cost, I will probably never own, but will NEVER stop lusting after! Probably completely irrelevant but, I'd LOVE to see a fountain pen shootout between the Conway Stewart Winston and a Montblanc 149. I sense that the Montblanc would have met its match.

    Way to go John! What a beautiful pen. And Stephen, *6:09+* my favorite part!

  • @boyleso

    I just drew a few gentle infinity loops (about 4-5) with no pressure at a 45% angle on the finest micromesh I had, then buffed on a grey side of a buffer stick with a few figure 8's very gently. The theory was to give the babies bottoms a bit of a spank! Tested the first time and it was improved, but squeaked like hell the second pass fixed the squeak and the hard starts completely. It now writes from the very first stroke every time and has become one of my favourite writers.

    I'm sure you know what I'm thinking about the size and weight ... all the same that resin is very attractive. I'd be fascinated to know what's in that history booklet.

    Partly as a consequence of your splendid review I've just bought a Winston in classic brown with silver trim (my bank manager is now back in his restraints). It's gorgeous and I can't stop looking and fondling it ;) I agree it's hefty, but perfectly balanced un-posted & I love the smooth wet broad nib, I have noticed however, as you mention in your review, regular hard starts. Have you had any success in addressing this?

    • @graeme0309
      @graeme0309 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard starts kind of put me off. What do you think the issue is?

    • @boyleso
      @boyleso 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@graeme0309 I think they over polished the tipping on the nib. Since then Conway has changed hands. I bought another this year and had no issues at all. I think in the past they didn't do very good quality control.

    If I remember correctly, the Conway Stewart ink that comes with this pen is Diamine. I could be wrong, though.

    Okay, that's taking "luxury pen" to a whole new level, aye? What the heck, I thought it was some sort of case for the pen when you first took out that while cylinder.
    Anyway, another great review, Mr. Brown. Looking forward to more :)

    I've been looking for reviews of Krone pens everywhere.. A few blog posts and forum discussions later I'm still searching. Might you one day? Krone's tribute to Winston Churchill really intrigues me.

    Oh! Nice. Beautiful; no: gorgeous! Happy days.
    That is the old ink bottle (before c. 2013); they are now using the Diamine bottles with custom packaging and labels.
    Out of curiosity: what percentage of your fountain pen hoard (!) are now gifts in one form or another, and how many did you buy with your own money? Circa.

  • @GenWivern2
    @GenWivern2 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, ebonite works well for me, somewhere around the 10g mark. :-) I have a feeling that you weighed one pen out at 70g or so, not sure which one. Could have been an overlaid Chinese dragon pen or something of that sort.
    Looking forward to the Onoto review, it's one of the nicest looking pens to have appeared in the last few years, I think. Again, not really my thing, but even so ...

  • @eqlzr2

    Damn, it's early in the morning, and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet, but I have to say I'm getting slightly irked by all the fountain pen reviews I've watched this morning that have a whole lot of uninteresting (to me, of course) stuff before the writing samples. There, I feel better, and my coffee is having some effect. Thanks for your interesting vids. Ta da.

  • @erpedege
    @erpedege 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting piece of pen also. Where today, endorsement deals are sort of exclusive, both Conway Stewart en Onoto claim that Churchill used their products and they seem to see no reason to fight over it :-)
    BTW, the ink looks remarkably like a bottle of Pelikan Turqoise where CS these days ships Diamine inks. Interesting. I don't think there was a reliable supply of German ink in Churchill's days. Some factchecking required.

    If you haven't already, you should check out a video here on TH-cam by namiki called something like how a $9000 pen is made. About 5 minutes in a shows an artist do some carving work into a FP then fill it in with gold and other materials. It's incredible.

    I think I heard some 'clicking' noise when you do the writing sample, is the nib loose or the two tines touching each other?

    well, now we know why the quality booklet wasn't signed. Impressive pen but from a fountain pen of it's class and price one could expect that it writes right out of the box.
    Nevertheless, interesting and enjoyable review!

    Well done for being a magnet for other people's pens! :) You're sending some subliminal messages in your videos are't you? -- "Gimme you pens, gimme you pens, gimme you pens" Lovely pen Stephen. Lovely gift too. John has been extremely kind and very generous. If he is not in good health, we would all, I am sure, wish him well. I hope the pen brings much joy.

    This is as close as it gets to a grail in my opinion! Great review. I have a question though. Are there any ink brands you are wary of using in these expensive pens? I ask because I have read that Ancient Copper can gunk up the feed, so I think I would be wary of using it on this beaut! I'm by no means an expert however so perhaps the fear is unwarranted.
    Thanks for these excellent videos.

      I never use Noodler's in expensive pens. If you want to be really safe, only use washable blues.

    Absolutely, fountain pen porn :-) and a great review.
    I own a limited edition of the Winston model, the Chartwell, and it is beautiful. Its IF nib, which I now use on my CS Marlborough Vintage, is springy, almost a semi flex nib, and it writes smoothly and wet. That's one of the things I like about CS, you can interchange their nibs.
    This green finish is absolutely stunning, one of their best IMO.
    Great video to watch before I take my wife (and my Loom) out :-)
