- The Lithgow LA101 Crossover rifle in 22.lr was a big success and 2 years later we now have them available in 22MAG and 17HMR. I tested out the 22MAG version and to say I'm impressed is an understatement! This rifle shot a 5-shot group @ 100 yards using Hornady 45gr Critical Defense into a nice little .7" cluster!!! This fully Australian-made rifle is awesome and you just need to have one.

I will NEVER recommend any rifle unless I'm truly impressed with it and I have to say this rifle ticks ALL the boxes for me. I've already ordered a 10 round mag too, so having an accurate 10 round 22magnum rifle is just awesome!

i sure would like to get my hands on that rifle. i have a CZ 512 22mag. semi-auto , but that bolt action looks awesome. Plus, i do not own an Australian gun and the Lithgow "LA101" looks top of the line. shoots great, nice video.

Thanks Tom, I'm only guessing here but I can't see why they won't be available at some stage because Lithgow are selling the semi-auto version of the F90 in the US now, so it would make sense to sell the Crossover bolt action rifle range too...

Mate, just as an update, I got a message from an American viewer who said they have seen the Crossover bolt action range at the Lithgow stand in the US recently, so they must be selling them there or atlas intending on doing so...

Oh yeah! I "need" one of these beauties to keep my Ruger 96/22 magnum lever gun (yes) company at the range. I dunno if it is as expensive as a Ruger 77/22 bolt gun but it looks to of be even higher quality machining.
BTW Gents, to get good groups use a Neil Jones rimfire cartridge sorting device. It accurately measures rim thickness (it determines rimfire headspace). You sort into groups of the same thickness and they all should group fairly well - BUT at different Points Of Impact (POI), naturally.

Yep, it's coming mate, just takes a bit to film, edit etc etc, a lot of time and effort but the end result will be good I'm sure... I too can't wait to do the review! :)
every winchester round I have used from 22lr to 7mm rem mag sprays like buckshot, that critical defense stuff is brilliant but hard to find so get it when you see it!
Wow that's a nice little rig. Still hard to decide between the 22lr or mag. I noticed that for most of the ammos the clusters were almost half the size in the 22mag. Awesome video as always mate and I'm still drooling over that trijicon. Pretty sure its costs more than the actual gun.

What a great looking, and apparently, great shooting rifle! I can seem to be able to buy a Lithgow LA101 here in Canada; at least not yet. But this week I did place an order for a CZ-455 Evolution Varmint heavy barrel in 22lr.
That Lithgow looks very impressive.
I am stoked with it to be honest Reg and being Australian-made, as an Australian it fills me with pride to own a rifle that's made entirely right here...

ok, had mine now for a week. I've tried cci and hornady 30gn v-max. CCI again working better, like your video, yet hornady all over the shop. I have some max mag to try and some sub sonic too. I think ill give those federals tnt's a go too. Man, these rifles are so well built, absolutely over the moon. The guys at Safari looked after me by swapping a laminated stock off a 22lr to a 22magnum for me, as there was none in stock. Great shop if your near Sickney.
Try the Hornady Critical Defense ammo as I find it outstanding as shown in this review... glad you like your rifle, just another person who has seen for themselves why I love them :)
Those 45gr ftx hornady rounds are really good and accurate in my cz455, less than 1moa at 100yd
Got my LA101 22WMR earlier this month. Love the rifle, but ammo choice is a little more restricted in the UK. Got 300 Hornady 30gr ballistic tips with it and first time out only managed around 1.5" with 5 shot group at 100 yards. Was a little disappointed, but I'll finish off the ammo to see if it settles down with a few more rounds and cleaning cycles. My CZ452 in 17HMR when new shot just over an inch with Hornady 17gr's but that is now down to around 10mm with same ammo a few hundred rounds later...
BTW, the trigger on my LA101 has an awful creep before it firms up and releases which can't help. I'm going to have my gunsmith do the trigger because I can't live with that.
hey ozzie looks awesome. what are your thoughts on the .22wmr in general. i just ordered a cz 455 22wmr s/s and been seeing mixed results.

If lithgo used this awesome rear lug action for the 221 rem fireball and 17 rem fireball it would off the chart...
Lithgow should make a bullpup for the Oz market..... To my knowledge, there isn't a .22 bolt action bullpup anywhere. If they want to show innovation, bullpups are where it's at, and they're good for Australia, as we shoot out of vehicles a lot.

I know it's a day dream but with the strength of this rifle , I'd love to see a faster twist barrel , tight chamber made to shoot 45-50gr at a higher psi , have the bullets seated so they can't chamber in std 22mag . Like I said pipe dream . I held out for 18 years for a 20 cal magnum rim fire , but when I heard about the Lithgow in 22mag with semi target chamber I ordered my in the first week it was released .
I hear nothing but good things about this rifle, I'd love to get one here State side.

I do have a Lithgow .22 mag, my question is, at what range would you recommend to sight the rifle at for head shoot bunnies?
Awesome review as always ,I just hope they make few versions of 308 in FDE Color stock and black Color barrel + adjustable cheek rest something like Tikka T3 Tactical -- will be awesome I reckon :)
A tactical style aluminium chassis/stock would be AWESOME as I think there would be thousands of us here in Australia who would absolutely love to mod our Lithgows out, it'd be a real club / following if you know what I mean?

Hey ozzie. I bought this rifle and I didnt break it in and shot 60 rounds through it. It is my first rifle and wasnt aware. Will this ruin accuracy? Did you break your one?
Accurate long distance shots with 22wmr (100 to 130 metres) ammo to use 30 grainers with poly tip.

No plans to do it sorry mate. It's going to be just like this one except in 17HMR, so I have no doubt that it will shoot very well...
great review Ozzie, thanks. funny thing about the 40gr Winchester's are absolutely rubbish in my Savage 93. you seem to have the same results. my 93 loves the hornady but in 30gr vmax. under 1 inch at 100m for me
Yes I have now tried the Hornady 30gr v-max in my Ruger 77/22mag and it's done the same at 100, just brilliant!
Rear lug bolts are good for accuracy, remington done the 788 in the seventys early eighths and thay were tack drivers, but for some reason thay quit doing rear lugs and these are the first I've seen . Don't know about Lithgow other than the Enfield and not sure if thay are the same, maybe someone knows.
Sad to say but I have had no end of probs with my Lithgow 22mag. Its going back to the factory for the second time now. So bad I have not even been able to fire it !

They were pretty good rifles. I used to shoot a. 303 /25 single shot , thing was a good'n. Long time ago now , was it a Sterling ?

Are front mounted lugs that lock into the barrel right behind the case a better choice for accuracy?

Got one , shoots like a laser & 50 but opens up at 100 I'm sure it's the ammo. At 50 most 5 shot groups were right on 5/8th "" & opened up to a average of 1 1/2" . A magnito speed chrony was used & muzzle velocity was all over the place & the shots matched the speeds . Highest velocity went high , & lowest were low. No expensive ammo was used. Ammo tested was win power points 40gr , win dyna point 45 gr , win power point 45gr subsonic , s&b 45gr fmj , çci 40gr maxi mag , 40gr jhp highland . All shot about the same at 50 average 5/8 . But not real happy @ 100y. Best was 1 group at 1 1/4" rest was at leased 1.5 "+ . So looks like I might try the 45gr hornady critical defence & 50 gr federal . It gets a $pendy to buy all this 22 mag ammo for accuracy testing , & it's hard to get a good range of ammo with out driving all over Brisbane to get it. Love the rifle , my mate named it the laser because everything shot extremely well at 50. Just a bit disappointed at 100y, like I said the more pricey ammo will most probably pay dividends . Thanks .
Welcome to my world, I drive all over Brisbane and buy ammo for the reviews! The Hornady ammo seems to work very well in mine, super accurate which is great...
Ozzie, what would you choose if it was between the LR or WMR for target shooting? About to buy one in two weeks and can't make my mind up.
22lr, the ammo is a 3rd of the cost, you can get a wide variety of match ammo and it's very versatile in the sense of you can get sub-sonics, standard, high velocity and hyper velocity ammo.
I had one in 22lr.., hated it. It misfed rounds just when you needed them not to. Sold it for a Tikka T1x... my third Tikka

I really don't know why they cant get the threaded barrel to match almost everything out there which is 1/2x28 not 1/2x20

Good if you are punching paper at 100 yards but a miss if you are head shooting a bunny. ( unless aiming at black space and not target that is ).

Just wondering, the cci maxi mag was just high at 100, where the hornady was quite a bit low, yet tighter. How wind affected were the groups? The hornady being heavier seemed to not shoot as flat, though still a good but of energy
Yeah 15gr difference and being sighted in at 50 yards will definitely be noticeable with different impacts @ 100. There was a gentle breeze at the time and it really didn't seem to bother it...
Where did you get your hornady critical defence . I can't find it anywhere ? ( in brissy )

Seems to be a common theme in your rifle reviews - rimfire and centrefire - that Winchester Ammo doesn’t shoot all that well
You have no idea Ozzie how I feel to know you have a la102! As you know I have been sitting on the edge of my seat for that gun, just hope left hand models are already available.
Yup, it sure is nice to have it here just itching to get out and do the review... it's coming mate so be patient, it takes a lot to get these done as you'd probably be aware of...
Not bad a t all if i ever need a 22 mag its the way i would be going. In a normal .22 Lr sighted in at 50m it will drop 150mm or 6 inches at 100m with standard velocity ammo such as CCi target at 1070 Fps not sure on the magnum as i am not sure of what velocities this ammo is running at.
Various Bob, depending on which bullet weight you go for in the 22mag. The 30gr v-max ammo out of a 22mag are moving at 2200fps so pretty flat for a rimfire
good accuracy for a .22 mag but it would be hard to choose it over an Anshultz
Being a big fan of Anschutz I would agree, however the only 22mag Anschutz available now is the 1500 series, not the 1720s that they no longer make. If you want a lightweight 22mag go the 1500 series Anschutz, if you want accuracy I'm voting to stick with the Lithgow...

Had any number of 22mag and every time think 'this time it will be different' and was thoroughly dissapointed. Then came 17hmr and there is just no point until you go centerfire 22.

Thanks John, yeah mate I am confident that the rifle will shoot amazingly. They have done their home work in the rimfire arena and I just can't see them releasing a crap product in the centre fire line, but my review will soon tell us what we all need to know :)
Does anyone know what type of caliper he is using? Alternatively can anyone recommend one? I want something not to pricey but can do the job reliably.

I wish, there is a good market here for Category-C firearms, collectors, instructors, primary producers, feral pest controllers... if Lithgow made semi-auto 10 round versions of their LA101, honestly I reckon it would do VERY well...

Sounds like a good idea Ozzie, I would definitely buy one if the rifle was available. And theres a good market for another bolt action .17 WSM, cos at the moment theres only the B.Mag and the 77/17.
Yes exactly my thoughts on it too. HS Precision were making a 17WSM but then scrapped the idea unfortunately which leaves an empty void for a high end quality 17WSM rifle...
why,. when you want to buy australan made do they want to make a mark up price which cannot compete with overseas prices i am willing to pay more but not double. gary
$1100 dollars though... My $400 Zastava groups just as well with most ammo, yeah sure it's Australian made which is great but c'mon you're talking nearly double the price of a CZ452/455 and almost asking Sako money. The "Made in Australia" title, threaded barrel and cerakote shouldn't make it 50% more than it should be.
Don't get me wrong, I am not shitting on this rifle but it really seems like Lithgow Arms are taking full advantage of the "Australian Tax"

Lithgow build times are way too long these days.
ive used winchester 40g in my savage 22mag... and it is absolute rubbish.. i doubt it fires well in any rifle, it is terrible! although my 22-250 loves winchester
I am personally not a fan of the action of Lithgow rifles. They always feel and sound scratchy as if they have no oil.

No we aren't but for those of us like myself who were raised shooting at the local range which was in yards (and still is), imperial is what we learnt to shoot in when it comes to distance and it also makes it a lot easier when looking at ballistics on American made ammo (which is 95% of the market).

@@ozziereviews lol us older guys still only use inches, feet, yards, chain ect, its a farmers thing from converting those of us old enough to remember the changes. and 100 mph sounds so much faster than 160 kmh. yes im old. remember rabbit trap lines my grandfather had out, like 100 or 200 traps, no gates were locked, you could spotlight all night by telling your neighbors we are spotlighting that night, and they would another night in turn, i loved those days of freedom, no signed permision letters, your word meant something.
Lol Made in Australia.. with a threaded barrel for a suppressor... in Australian... hahaha!!! In this hole a suppressor is classed as a weapon in itself, requiring a separate class on your license and they see no reason for us having one. Once again an overpriced australian made item.
NO wonder people buy from overseas instead of paying double for crap.
Don't get me wrong.. it's a nice rifle and would totally be worth getting IF it was $800 or less.
