Getting ready to purchasing my 1st .22 mag. Looking at a Ruger All American with a Cerakote finish. And 2nd choice would be Savage 92FV with similar Cerakote finish. Reviews I've come across make the Ruger seem promising. I've always been a small caliber guy but in rimfire, the energy @100 yrds is what im most concerned about, and most will group sub 1.25"@100.
A person that has owned 6 .22wmr, im curious of thoughts of .22mag vs .17hmr on coyotes, whistle pigs, and HYPOTHETICALLY speaking, a deers head.

@@AR_420- Please watch this again, that CZ 457 is for real, listen to what his grouping were. It may be a tad more $ wise but in the long run it is a rifle to be passed down, not thrown away. All kidding aside, save yourself some grief and get the CZ. I have several, in different calibers and all are fantastic. I could sell these things. Do you hear that CZ?! LOL, cheers...

    Ohhhh, GREAT topic/timing!
When I 'Retired' my EDC, Ruger P85 (9mm for those who don't know), for the Ruger 57, ALL my neighbors thought I'd lost my mind. "THAT teensy-tiny little caliber, vs your 9mm?!" was their common retort.
Then I showed them via every target-of-opportunity we could obtain (And the refrigerators with their assorted fruits/veggies AND meat (ty Mr. Harrell for that one!), suffered dearly!), up to real gelatin blocks, just how well the 5.7 performs.
Got ahold of their Ruger LC Carbine, next, and that's even bettah!
You gotta respect weight + velocity!
(I'm eyeing a 17HMR for our various ground/tree varmints, next!)
Thanks for taking the time (And investing all that time/money/energy) in making and sharing your videos!

Watched a lot of vids comparing these 2 so I knew the .22 would have more power but it seems overall due to bullet design the .17hmr is a bit more accurate . I prefer .22mag overall because you can also run it in a pistol.

17 HMR for crows and rabbits out to 150 yards. Foxes head shot only out to 75yards. 22 WMR for crows and rabbits out to 125 yards and head shot only foxes to 100 yards. The 22 WMR hits with more effect as it has a higher impact number of bullet weight multiplied by bullet impact energy than the 17 HMR at all ranges. I would like to see you measure the enclosed volume that each bullet makes when hitting a clay block. You would need a bigger or deeper clay block to capture the 22 WMR bullet according to the results from this video. I know that the bullets with more momentum disrupt more tissue than bullets with lower momentum, but it would be nice to "quantify" the results to discover how much better these high moments bullets behave. Bigger animals generally require higher momentum to kill them quickly therefore humanely.
Nice video. I think keeping it simple teaches us more as we are not overwhelmed with too many details.

@@barackmycat9448 - As I said 75 yards is about max for me, on Coyote. Considering the HMR hits as hard at 100 yards, as a .22LR does at muzzle. Approx. 130 FT/LBS. More than enough to take a coyote down. The HMR is so accurate, it makes the task much more easy to accomplish. I shoot gophers (Richardson ground squirrels), no problem at 100 yards, so a head shot on a Coyote is even easier, just saying.

Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.
This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR.
This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.

Hello Mr. WHO_TEE_WHO another excellent video showing the difference in energy transfer down range. I tend to agree, close up hunting (inside 100 yards) either cartridge should perform about the same, in as much delivering a one shot kill. However, I believe that at 100yds + that .17HMR may give you a bit more accuracy on small game. That's due to it's lower BC and higher muzzle velocity. I always enjoy your videos keep it them coming please.

I have a cz457 in 22lr, running a Athlon scope and timney trigger. It will ragged hole at 50 yards with SK ammo. Went down the rabbit hole due to the Pursuit of Accuracy channel. Since my back yard range is only 50, its a great set up.

22 mag for coyotes, 17 hmr for squirrels, and both for a fun day plinking with the family. Each cartridges have a valid purpose but both are just a lot fun.

Cloudy days are actually the best days for the chronograph, because the light is diffused and even. Just don't put the sky screens on it when it's cloudy.
Did you have to special order the CZ 457? I'd love to get one, but their website doesn't list any dealers in the US.
Always cool when you shoot the clay blocks! Thanks for another great video!

Sorry, Hoot, but that was not a tie. 22 Mag all the way- especially in the See-Zee! That clay is dense and heavy, so bustin' through the back means something. Like penetrating more paper plates. Ultra-Mega-MAGA

What we're just talking about clay we're not talking about the true accuracy and how flat they shoot and that's what the v17 has and you don't necessarily have to go through the clay and when I'm hunting coyotes I can guarantee you that turns your brains into scrambled eggs

However, if you were collecting pelts you do not want a blowout. Both are very good rounds but the purpose of each is different. 17 is designed to deposit all its energy into the animal and not damage the skin on the back end.

Anyone else think it would be a great video if there was a pound of Tannerite hidden in a random clay block?

  • @randallcampbell510
    @randallcampbell510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

To quote someone much smarter than me. . Uncle Albert. E=mc2. Energy is. Mass (weight) x speed Squared. My takeaway is while the 17 is wicked fast. The 22 mag has a bullet almost 2.5 times as heavy. Another physics law is, double the velocity increase the energy by 1/2 again. Double the mass, double the terminal energy 2x2. (Squared) or 4 times. Your clay test proved this. 17 is great for small varmints. I own on. I would never shoot a yotie with one. Keep up the great videos.
