- Advice for architecture students and young professionals. What to do after architecture school, what to expect, and how uncertainty is an integral part of the creative life. In this video, I share excerpts from a conversation I had with Maleick, a 22-year old architecture student from Baltimore. He’s preparing to graduate architecture school this spring, making plans, weighing his options and struggling with the anxiety of not knowing what’s next.
Twenty-two years ago, I stood where Maleick and many of you stand today, entering the profession with the same concerns, the same worries. Today, twenty-two years later, I’m no longer an architect. Yes, I have the degree and the license and buildings I’ve designed but the profession I stepped into back then no longer exists. Today I’m a photographer, a graphic designer, a marketer, a filmmaker, a writer, a negotiator, an editor, a curator, and a creator. There are no more architects in the singular sense of the word. Practice today is anything and everything you design it to be. I’m all these things because I chose optionality over specificity. I want to do more things in life than architecture. I want to make videos, I want to design hardware and t-shirts, I want to print letterpress cards and pursue aerial photography. I have a thousand interests. Adopting the creator’s mindset has allowed me to develop skills that serve a variety of outcomes, and has led me to a most rewarding professional life, full of opportunity.

I am only 13 but really wanting to go into architecture. I know it is a long process until I get there but how do I find projects or clients to work with? Also how do you earn money mainly?
I'm not an architecture student. In fact I'm a retired guy who just enjoys watching your videos. You are wise beyond your years my friend. A person doesn't have to be payed to do what they love. You are what you do. So do what you want to be.......You nailed this one......again. Thanks again for being you......
I'm 21 and i just finished my bachelor of architecture, and I've been sitting around for a month bored looking for a internship or work experience so far I've found nothing I'm beginning to fear for my future, but the idea of producing my own architectural content to display on social media inspires me, it sound like a good way to reach out and hopefully catch an employer's interest, i think i might start there.

listen more than you talk is about the best advice you can get. 30X40 Design Workshop : yessir. but then again who truely can say for sure that he has or she has got the right answer? didnt renzo piano say something in the lines, when a student asked him if he felt that he had gotten to a certain level that he mastered it all... phew... that he was still learning? if piano still thinks he's learning at his level of accomplishment. then there is hope for us all !
This video and message is not just for recent graduates, but all architecture professionals to reflect back on why they put themselves in this industry. I think having a fear of being average is a lot easier to handle than knowing you might be below average. However, with me, I must take every opportunity to refine my process and product, and with each client I get to do just that, hopefully getting one step closer to a comfortable level of what defines me as a designer, average or not. Thanks for this topic Eric and for connecting a very valid story back to the front of our minds, even if only for 3 minutes and 34 seconds. I graduated just in time for the 2008 recession. It took months to find a job in architecture and I would have appreciated the reassurance provided in this video. Thanks for sharing.

Yes! I've recently been thinking about this lately. Not what I want to do after Architecture school, because I think I know, but going to do different things other than architecture. Taking my hobbies and turning them into a business. Getting a TH-cam channel up that shows all of this: Art, Photography, Writing my first book, Investing, Real Estate, etc. Don't just want to be one thing. Be a wide range of things ☺ great advice!!!

Uh…I’m 44 about to start Architecture school in New Zealand & possibly Australia. It’s something I’ve put off for years but feel like this is the right choice for my future. And if I don’t do it, I’ll regret it. Can’t wait to get started!

i was graduated at 2016, two years wondering around what i should do. back then all the matters was how i got a job, not what i am want to do. sure there is always something to learn, but at the end of the day it feels like i was left behind, i aint got any closer to my dream.

A year ago I had hardly any idea of how I would fit in the industry and if I would at all. Eventually I figured I'm just way more into urban studies than architectural design which is why I've been feeling like I didn't belong at times. Fortunately, a degree in architecture is a great way to get into the field anyway. Nothing is set yet, but the sole fact I finally made up my mind and am able to feel excited about the future instead of overwhelmed - that brings a level of comfort.

Too often the reality of an architectural education does not live up to the dreams you have in year 1. I now work in local authority and could not go back to working in an office. I still love to design and create but do it in different ways. Diversification is key in my opinion, get the education and doors will open.

You picked some good references. One day we will have to do a hangout or skype. I also have very strong opinions about many of the topics you talk about. Maleick can do whatever he is willing to work for. I never felt restricted to achieve what I wanted. I understood I would have to do my internship to get my license, but once we have our license the only thing that limits us is us! That was true in 1979 when I got out and it is still true today. What does Maleick do now. That is a very easy answer. get a job and if you want to be an architect get a job with an architect. Put in your time and pass the test and be a master of your future. It takes a different type of person to be self employed, which is what I think you need to do what you want. You don't have to be smarter, but you do need specific traits. You have to be self discipline, you also have to be self motivated. If you aren't willing to put the time and hard work in don't complain about how limited you are. This is a good "beer and pizza" conversation.

Empowering video Eric. I would say keep doing what you've been doing is already very helpful. In fact, you're the only architect I know who has his own practice, yet still remains super in-touch with tech & social media. You advocate having online blog/portfolio by learning web design, experiment with drone footage, all these potentially industry disruptive skillsets some of my professors/employer just adamantly refuse to accept. For me personally, I'd appreciate occasional contents like 'my library of essentials,' or the Dieter Rams book review video (general book recommendations for inexperienced designers who're looking to expand their theoretical design vocabulary).
Great advice for all the new graduates Eric. I know I couldn't have anticipated where my career has grown to since graduating, and I can't wait to see where the industry and practice of architecture travels over the next couple of decades. That love of creating, of making things better, of finding different solutions to old problems, and that natural curiosity ... those things that were all so well cultivated during our studies, are all brilliant to keep front and centre, however we choose to spend our days. As designers, we have an incredible privilege to really make a mark on our world that helps so many - and the world definitely needs people who love what they do, making their mark :)

I’m heading off to uni this fall to begin studying architecture for at least 7 years. My plan. Study for as long as possible. Learn and travel as much as I physically can and work for myself as soon as i can. I like to think 6-12 years in advance to start preparing now. Wish everyone good luck with their life. 🙂

Thanking you ahead of time. offering a man some of what you have is appreciated. however you are teaching people how two fish when you're hungry for fish. You have to be thought up as an angel somewhere. time is all we have and for you to spend this much time to teach people fuck that's something special man thank you. funniest part about it to me is I've only watched two of your videos. I really appreciate your time and effort that you put into helping other people.
You should do a video, taking us on a walk or run or cycle through the woods and the beach or loch you live close by. Just for a change of scenery (more landscape than workspace) . A topic to inspire overthinkers, those with low self-esteem, anxious people and just to encourage people because sometimes you need a break. (not just a coffee break) but a theraputic break before returning to work with a refreshed and inspired brain.
Tends to be the biggest help with my work.

i have just finished school about 6 month ago me and couple of my friends decided to open our own farm but to do that we need a lot off money so we start to do small jobs in order to get that money it will take time but the idea of us working together for the rest of our life keep us going the bottom line is no mater how big the dream is you can do it if you really go for it

Hey Eric, been a while as I just moved into my first flat but feels good to have another binge of your videos and get back into the swing of the day to day! Excellent video my last year before my year out and I think the most anxious thing is to try and find a practice and people that have similar views as your own coming out of uni. I just dont want to feel like a cog in the wheel of life, but I think this also comes back to what you say about your own goals of success.
Interesting. I think it's the fight to escape the grind that teaches you to find those alternative avenues to get more freedom. It is those experiences that taught me to do many of the things I do today and I would not have learned them had I not lived through them. There is no way for a young man to succeed from the beginning without struggles and failures. I speak from experience. I too was that hungry young man and have only learned these wisdoms by investing the time. And, like you, I am still learning and finding my path every day.

Provide a step-by-step process as to the most memorable parts of your journey to who you are today involving:
Apply to FAFSA, get accepted into a school, transfer/apply for classes, mention the critiques, mention when you graduated, mention how long it took you to find a job, mention what you did and how much you made after you got a job compared to how much you made 5yrs later and now. That would be SO HELPFUL.

I'm an architecture student in the UK about to graduate this year. Now I'm exactly at the stage of confusion, whether I should keep going on my path to be an architect or go to do something else.
The story was started last year when I rediscovered my passion for comic making and I was started to spending my free time (which very little) on improving my drawing skill. The worst comes along as I continue to progress in the course, I started feeding up by works. Although, it may seem like I may move on to another path. However, I remain a great passion on designing. In addition, I do understand I can't make a living as an artist alone.
My struggle is myself started to splitting apart, one side wants to keep going to be an architect and the other side want to spend more time to be a comic artist. Then a three vice screaming I need to earn a living after my graduation.
Side notes here: My school changed the syllabus for this year because the workloads broke a lot of students last year. Although they tried, it seems like they still haven't solve the fundamental issue of the course. But that beyond the scope here.

re: workloads + hard work. i love situations where i can win by outworking people...because i know i can outwork anyone. and that doesn't mean i have to be the last guy in the studio. have a plan, then execute the plan. approach your interests with this kind of passion, work harder than everyone else to be the best and you'll be the guy on top. having an entrepreneurial mindset will allow you to turn any skill into a wage. much success to you. dig in, work hard, embrace the struggle.

I'm really at a loss when it comes to what I'm going to do after graduation. Even though I still have a couple of years to finish. Here in Brazil you'll find that interior decoration is the giant in the bussiness but it's not what I want at all. To be honest I don't know what I want exactly... I want to design useful things and make things. Not just keep doing what everyone is doing. But at the same time there's the constant fear of not achieving finatial stability.

What to do after graduating from architecture school? There is only one answer: take your registration tests, and PASS THEM. PASS THE TESTS AND GET REGISTERED, GET REGISTERED, GET REGISTERED. If you don't know how many people graduated and failed to take the tests, or just failed the tests, you haven't been around enough people in this field. Your degree only qualifies you to get a sympathy job from an established architect who knows that you won't do him much good while he teaches you what architecture is REALLY about. But if you don't get registered, you won't be any more than a drafter like me. And you may not even be as qualified as I am since you don't have much real world experience. All that hard work in architecture school will be close to being wasted if you don't get registered. Number one, start studying to take the exams even before you graduate. Number two, take the sympathy job and be happy to get paid next to nothing because you will likely lose your boss money for the first year or two. Take the first exam and don't be surprised if you fail it. Keep taking them until you pass. Most people have to retake at least one of them, and some people have taken tests multiple times before passing them. FYI, the tests are measuring technical ability only, not artistic ability. Never spend an extra second of test taking time to make something look pretty. The test evaluators do not care about the looks of your test project, only that you know the subject. If you are one of the fortunate who managed to graduate from architecture school, do not allow yourself to be sidetracked by some other activity, no matter how appealing it may look. Passing those tests is the most important thing you can do, IF you actually want to be an architect.

I've found it difficult to try and put myself onto paper while studying and trying to "survive" life is tricky and I'm impatient. In the mean time I'm researching and looking, finding what people want and need and finding the paths I'd like to follow. Most of the time things feel hopeless and inworry that I won't be able to find even basic work since it's already so hard to do without the degree, I worry that it will all be for nothing

What a great video. Your closing comments were just what I needed to hear. I'm finding Life in practice tough at the moment. I thought my school of architecture was intense. But, this is a whole new level. I get in for 8 and finish at 8 sometimes later.
Any advice with regards to writing design reports, such design access statements?
The question is do you enjoy it or is it just an obligation... ?
regarding reports -- they all follow a pattern... find a good previous example and follow the same structure... outline the structure in your report and fill in the blanks... ps I always found using the outline mode in MSword a great place to organise your thoughts
I graduated in interior architecture in may and started working in June, and first 3 months were great but after probation my boss, she shouts a lot and honestly I hate my job and my life now, everyday I am thinking about quitting design life, why I should work over time with no pay and get shouted at and insulted with a tiny bit of money, instead I work a job that is 9-5 and pays more and not so much stress. I just feel depressed now.

Ps i suggest a video about having a broader mind set on making art and architecture...there are a lot of other places tht appreciate you more and cherish ur work more i think they don't have to be ur home country or the developed countries...we need to have the mind of the explorer, traveler expedite (not everybody have these liberty but... The ones who complain happen to be the ones who don't have this limitation lol again ) so a video of other realities could be very interesting like u know Morocco,Chile,Ghana they are awaiting their next archistars...
After graduation I'll be finishing up my AXP hours but I don't know if I want to go for my licence or not. It seems kind of a hassle to pay all of the fees and put in time towards maintaining it. I'd much rather start my own studio and do what I do and then have either an in house structural engineer or a structural engineering company stamp my work which seems much easier to me. But anyways, completing my AXP hours and starting my own firm are my top two priorities after graduation.
question! how do you preserve your work and protect it from people who could copy it, besides you've gotta have a plan B in case you won't have much of clients you know us architects are just like artists once you have your product sealed you're fine and when you don't then you should be prepared for some hard days.. other then that thank you so much for been here i love your videos so much you'd be the best teacher i'd ever have!

I take a somewhat liberal view on stealing. People steal my work frequently. I make a modest effort to dissuade blatant thievery (I don't sell CAD drawing files for example), but to maintain an online presence for a business today means to either: 1) accept the fact that people will steal your work or, 2) spend more time chasing thieves than making new things.
People steal and I keep making new things, so the things they stole are now the old things I made and because I'm making new ones I'll be so far ahead of those doing the stealing it won't matter.
My advice is to go make things and if people start stealing them, you'll know they're good!

People can and will copy what you do, but they can't copy you. Just keep being you, to the best of your ability. Put your energy into that. You'll find the people who love what you do, the way you do it, and always want the original.
Today i really liked your video. In my opinion, one of the best ever.
I found myself in the words of that young man. We don't want to stuck in the wheel, we want to evolve. learning by doing is what we love but how hard is to get inside and stay alive in this industry. Architecture is the worst paid profession, everywhere.
We are ok if a cheap coder or a UI designer is paid twice as an architect and this is wrong!

the real question isnt the size of the firm but what you feel comfy with.

this way you get a taste of what you like and what you don't...it won't take long.
on the practical aspect. you will be more quickly in the deep end in a small firm than a large one. that is if you take a "normal" progression, and i mean the usual route. in the end it depends on you. if you push for it in a big office you can quickly get alot of responsibilities . and if you lay low you might just abour manage not getting too involved. base line is: if you can't stand the heat get out the kitchen. the real question is do you like to cook?? 😁

It's inspiring me. I was graduate on last month. Now I work as BIM modeling at one of engineering consultant at my country just because I am good in operating that software.
I really wanna be an Architect, but I don't know how to start yet.
Should I keep working at my recent, searching for a new job as a junior Architect or just quit from the job and get more training outside.
This year m going to graduate and i have no idea for which post should i apply in any office
All i want is to learn more and more details and new construction methods and earn too for my living expenditure

Then, my Father gave me an idea ,"why dont you start your own firm with an experienced associate ", he said he has good contacts and as there has been an entire Residential Colony Redeveloped where i live some 1200+Apartments brand new. "So, why don't you open a Firm and get interior work alongside Architecture.As people will need an interior Designer instead of going far off,they will approach you "
But, i still have a doubt that i don't have any full fleged experience apart from my intern for 90 days and freelancer a month .Is it okay to start without experience (as in working in a firm)directly start my own ?
is it true that supply is over the demand in the architectural field? Most of the practice wanna see the detailed drawing, technical skills from your portfolio, and also 1 or more years of work experience. For me, I had no experience. How do I gain experience and able to get my first interview? or who should I speak to if I wanna start my own business?

What are the career choice related to architecture but not practicing one if it makes any sense!
... one of my teach told us: Find a doctor (read doc. medic.) because you cannot live of this. I think the biggest lack in the buisness is understanding the buisness, so I would seriously advise all architects to study economy .. that must be beneficial for carreerperspectives with any company others or your own. Still the architecturestudy can be applied to so much different knd of work than just designing. keep a very open mind is my best adwise.. it is all about what makes you happy all through your professional life.. not a Diploma.
