  • 14 tools and tips for architects and students to better manage their time throughout the design process. At the end I discuss my fee structure and how I use it to manage the project schedule too. I cover the following concepts - as they relate to architecture - in detail:
    1) Time boxing
    2) Significant vs. Urgent
    3) Tracking
    4) Invented deadlines and disincentives
    5) Pomodoro technique
    6) Pareto principle
    7) Templates + systems
    8) Organization
    9) Working time
    10) Saying "no"
    11) Notifications
    12) Getting (un)stuck
    13) Perfect vs. Good
    14) Fees + Scheduling
I hope these strategies help you to be a better architect, student or designer! Cheers...

30X40 Design Workshop Hey Eric, this is great, I think I will watch this again in the morning, given it's 1am I'm a bit sleepy to get the most out of this. The biggest difficulty in regards to time management I find is as I am still learning I don't yet know how long tasks are going to take particularly as I am needing to learn software from tutorials. A large chunk of time is taken up just searching for decent tutorials, so many videos listed as particular photoshop tutorials such as how create 3D isometric maps, are just a video of someone showing a task massively sped up without narration and with loud music. Not really suitable to learn from. I do find it interesting though how quickly you become used to the frantic pace of the last few days before the deadline.

Sir, thank you so much for such an informative session:)
      #lots of respect from India.
Sir, would also like to have a session on "Creative thinking in design" or the so called "Out of the box thinking" (even in daily activities)... and how to nurture it as a habit; as i beileve it is that thinking which will take a designer to places.

It's much more alive to have a practicing architect speak to them of his experience, than to just give them vocab lists. Thanks, Eric!!

    Great video.
I'm now a forth year architecture student and I always get trouble with keeping up the deadlines. In the last 2 years, I have been always asking myself if I did choose the right path or not, cause beside architecture I really don't find anything interesting. When I watch your video, I admit that I usually get stuck on the floor plans a lot, how to make it good, does this affect the others or not, or how I should improve this disadvantages of the site, weather to the buildings ... and then come to the elevations, and the result is being late for the whole time. The late of the design leads to the late of turning it into the software working and of course, the late of the submitting.
All of your videos are very useful and inspirational, sometimes they helped pulling the architecture passion back to me when I was desperate in designing buildings. I definitely try your tips for managing time and everything.
Thank you for making this channel. Hope everything good will come to you.

Great summary Eric. You have absolutely captured the crux of time management. One thing I do believe you have left out in this is preparation. I have noticed that a lot of time is waisted, this more so in bigger firms and bigger project, when things are not properly prepared in advance. This is like setting up a meeting for the sake of setting up a meeting instead on knowing what the clear outcomes of this meeting should be, and in so doing not knowing what the input should be so people tend to just throw things at the wall and see what will stick.

very practical & hands-on! ......... making SD 40% of your time rather than CDs is a worthy (and difficult/challenging) goal -- because the quality of the project will most likely increase and quality is what the client remembers .... that is how a reputation is built - and the opportunity of being in the driver's seat re: winning high end/high fee projects/clients are won. ........
KEY issues are HOW to actually accomplish this .... plus handling OBSTACLES such as unexpected expenses - car repairs - computer maintenance and purchase of more computer stuff $$$$$ - family problems - etc. while staying ON SCHEDULE ...... (Fees will be another Comment). ty again for your excellent posts!

The firm I worked in before used a software called 'documan', where they can track time spent by each employees each and everyday.
It can tell you the specific task that they were onto too. I sometimes did get annoyed knowing the fact that i was being monitored everyday. But now watching your video, I look back and think from their perspective about how billing is related to time management. I mean I knew it was made sense. But your explanation through a small example can help people to understand its importance. Its really crucial guys.
By the way, as always, great video and my pleasure.
    Cheers Eric.

Your channel is really inspirational. The ideas and techniques you share help me a lot through architecture school. As you've done in the past, can you make more videos about creative blocks and trying out different design processes to overcome them?

Eric - thanks for all the great videos! I also have both your books and have purchased your tool kit. It's so great to have generous folks like you in the profession willing to share your wisdom with folks like me. I am one year in after starting my own firm in MN. Could you share what software you use for project tracking? I liked the graphic of the reports that popped up on your phone in this video and I could certainly use help in saving some time in those areas. I didn't see it listed in any comments. Thanks again - cheers!

Oh I’m so guilty of Parkinson’s Law. This is a brilliant summary of how we can think about the time we spend on what we do. And get better impact with it. Nice cameo Gimli. Thanks for sharing Eric :)
