Being an architect. What's it like? | 'A Choice to Make' - Short Film

  • A short film about being an architect and my struggle to pursue a more creative life. This story is your story too because these are challenges we all face. How do we make the most of our short time here? How do we ensure we’re doing the work that makes us most happy? How do we reconcile our need to feel necessary, useful, and creative with the financial reality of making a life, supporting ourselves and our families?
Four years ago, I made the decision to part ways with the traditional practice of architecture in search of something more rewarding. I left behind a salary and good friends. I left a job that supported my family but left me creatively unfulfilled. Without a long client list or a rolodex full of contacts, and no familial connections to funnel work my way I began experimenting. I did anything and everything I could to feed my creative intellect.
I made things, each and every day. Most of what I made failed, but I took note of the ones that didn't and learned from them. I persisted and kept making. I continued to reevaluate what being an architect might look like; what it meant to me.
I found the traditional definition of practice stifling. I wasn’t content doing only one thing. Of course, I loved architecture deeply, but I also wanted to pursue writing and photography, video editing and sketching, model making and paper cutting, book publishing, marketing and interior design.
As my definition of what being an architect meant expanded to include all these things I discovered this deep well of creative freedom that traditional practice - for me - had been lacking.
Is my path the right one for everyone? Of course not. Is this expanded definition of a creative life perfect or unfailing? Hardly. But, experimenting has brought me closer than ever to my childhood vision of what a fulfilling life might look like.
Each day is a new experiment in making. And this short film? That's an experiment too. I made it with you in mind. To empower you to go find the things that make you feel most alive, most fulfilled, the things that bring you happiness.
This channel is possible because of you - my friends and viewers. I hope you’ll share your story in the comments below and together we can broaden the definition of what it means to live a fulfilling, creative life.

well some people try learn so much from the beginning and try to take in so much information, I'm only 15 but I think you should take it slow and keep on building up as you go through your school - people learn in different ways.

I’m 19 now and once I was a kid I was inspired to build and know more, I used to work at making custom cabinets, installing floors, installing basically anything for interior when I was 15 and every time I went to a clients house it tells a story and each time I see a structure of their homes it brings out like a vibe and I want to do something like that one day to design and build at the same time. So basically I’m trying to say it’s always good to see beyond your potential on what ever you’re interested at

After watching this I see how this wasting time for money cycle could be broken as you've shown because architecture in its simplest to me is the art of making

A Sneaker And a Dream I wanted to be an architect since I was 11 not because of LEGO or kids show is because of minecraft because the limitless ideas and creativity you can do in the game although you can do like thin walls or anything but I saw the game as a way to set off my future and currently I’m using rebut city to design things although I’m only in grade 10 I’m curious what it will be like to advanced into this more because I have a lot of ideas

why do I exist? The whole reason I’m choosing to be an architect is also because of minecraft. I started getting addicted at age 11 or 10 as well and I’m also in year 10. Recently built a computer, went onto TH-cam, hit play on one of keralis’ old videos and started building in Flows hd with Sliders Vibrant Shaders. Couldn’t be happier

First time ever commenting on TH-cam. I'm 6 years into my career as a structural engineer in bridge design. I've been on stress leave for 10 months now due to severe burnout. Over that time, the burnout has turned into depression. Both of these mental states I've never struggled with before. I've been searching for the changes I need to make to be happy. It's not a small task, and I find myself losing motivation too often. I cannot thank you enough for creating this video. The way you tell your story gives me so much hope and inspiration and it put a rare smile only face! I'm positive things will turn around. Cheers from Canada!

Sir.. you earned my respect. I had the same feeling about facing the world after graduating college. I took Bachelor in Architectural Drafting Technology, it was great. But when I stepped in my "On Job Training" (OJT) to experience my line of work outside the school, everything that I have learned became dull on what I have expected. Most draftsmen were not following the ground basics of making models, there lots of flaws. It made me sad.
The statement you said, "Trading Time for Dollars" was a great impact.
Thank you so much for this, it really made me cry with a smile. :')

I wanted to leave one more comment in addition to the one from 6 years and 1 year ago.
This video legitimately changed my life and still inspires me immensely to this day, and though I have chosen a different career path now that isn't architecture, this video led me to where I am today and I'm very thankful for that. I now want to have my own business, in what I'm not sure yet, and go further into academia to possibly and hopefully become a professor in history / classics, where I can explore the history of ancient Roman architecture in various climates, my love for architecture has certainly stayed, and I'm glad that I will still be able to study it for my later studies. I'm also now getting engaged this summer, when I mean this video sent me down a different path in life I mean it, I don't think I would be exactly where I am right now without it, so thank you Eric for this video, and for inspiring me and others.
    Cheers from Canada!!

I had a small practice, in a very poor region of the country. IN an effort to build the cost of good design into a product, I experimented in high performance modular building, one that failed financially. Im now working in construction paying back my family and more, and while trading dollars for hours, I am thankfull that Im still making. I turn 60 in a few months, what you have done here is give me some hope that I can again live a more creative life, when I retire!.

I watched the video through, went to subscribe and realized I already had. I get such a nice feeling when I see videos like this that reconfirm to me that I've finally found what I need and want my career to be. I used to make little models of homes myself as a kid and still sketch and create ideas that I hope will come to life one day soon. I absolutely love building stuff and being creative yet practical with little supplies/money, I've always contributed that into my life in all aspects. I didn't know I wanted to be an architect through highschool and a year or so after school, so I am grateful for that "lost" feeling that made me decide not to go to college right out of school, because I would be in debt for a career path that I didn't really want. It took me a while to discover I was meant to be an architect, I can't wait to get started on it all. Thank you for your quality content! 👌

Thank you so much for this! As a fresh grad, there are so many things going on in my head, that imaginary version of my self as an architect that I don't want to loose from everyday reality of life and what really happens in actual practice. Thank you for putting in so much more in perspective of how architects can create more, can be more.

All I can say is wow! Your message to me isn't just about architecture, It's a blueprint on how to live a fulfilling and beautiful life. I know nothing about architecture, but your passion towards how architecture shapes your way of life is mind blowing to me. I love how the things that you loved about architecture as a child eventually and naturally brought back your love and reminded you about why you wanted to be an architect in the first place. Through all of that your branches of creativity morphed into all your avenues of creativity which you have today. What brought me to your channel was your episode on updating your workspace home office. That episode was amazing. It left me wanting a space just like that for myself. The freedom to create is such an amazing thing.
I can't believe that I can actually geek out at watching your drawings and finding such beauty in them knowing I know nothing about architecture. It's funny I do write documentation from time to time to explain code and functions that I write. I will admit that your approach to story telling has not only inspired me, but have now influenced me in a few different ways.
Keep the videos coming. They are fantastic ways to be influenced as well as encouraged to create.

My fire is geting burnt our by stress and deadlines that we all need to meet. Watching this video made me realize and reflect on a lot of things. Hi Eric, I just have to say this video was very inspiring and resonated with me a lot. You truly are a great example of what it means to be a an architect and the ups and downs of it. Working for a small firm has a taught me a lot especially since I began working first then went to school and it really is different. I wish to one day make my own successful business like you instead of working for someone else’s dream with no design input. Please continue to encourage and inspire other architects, aspiring architects and students around the globe. Your work will not be forgotten!

I have always wanted to be an architect since I was a kid. My moms a realtor and my father a carpenter. Since as long as I can remember, building things with wooden blocks and leggos just like you mentioned was something I surprisingly did too. Constructing things to make them functional was always a habit I had in creative settings. I just started design studios in college just this year, and it has been such a journey in a few short months. My emotions and confidence peaks and troughs weekly, being in a competitive field, being so unsure of what I'm capable of. Your videos are really helpful and positive. Thanks for sharing your optimism and willfulness to share your story with others.

I’ve been a self employed, sole practitioner for 12 years and this hit home. I work out of my garage / man cave and I love it. I’ve got a routine like you, start my day listening to a record while replying to email then on to drafting. I get to see my two boys growing up, every day. As the years went by my reputation grew and I got to choose my clients. It’s a good life but it’s still stressful.

  • @taylorverrall118

This brought a bit of a tear to my eye.
I'm in the middle of a career switch. I had trained to be a data analyst and software developer, only to get three years into the field and realize I wasn't passionate about it.
I've spent the last few months reconnecting with my creative side. Sketching logos, imagining cities and designing room layouts. I've loved the opportunity to embrace this side of my personality but I worry about being "directionless" for not picking one sole path.
It's very refreshing to see that there are other people who embrace creativity and the design process as whole philosophies rather than umbrella terms for fields of work.
Best of luck on all of your projects!

I originally started studying architecture in high school. It made so much sense to me. I absolutely loved it, and because of that love got a scholarship to study it in university. Unfortunately due to the 2008 recession I made a change to my major to accounting. Today I’m a practicing cpa doing very technical things and love what I do. Eric this is one of the best videos that I have seen on youtube. I'm glad that you are now enjoying your work. I too share a similar pain when I had worked for construction companies and mainly did 11 hours of just drafting each day. I'm now working as a BIM Engineer whilst also completing my masters in Architecture as I'm chasing my registration just like you did to be free. I do not need the registration as much to find a decent job but it is just to realise the dream. I too hope I can find another source of income whether an investment or the like to allow me to have my own studio someday and have the freedom to pick and choose the next job. Please keep making these videos, they are great.

I'm more advanced in artistic and creative ways, but sociably and under pressure, I'm lacking, but I have a long time till then, and those are things I can work on. Recently I've been getting more organized and I watch a lot of TH-cam and read articles on this career path so I have an idea of what I'll do after I graduate.

Thank you for not only informing about architectural concepts but also sharing your story!! Making architecture was a long time dream for me like many of us who are here, and I absolutely loved it while studying it, but when I finished university (just a few months ago); the idea I had about architecture as a concept/as a science was exciting but the info about what is it like to actually practice it was so little. I just could not image how to make it work as a profession. And for a while, I got so distracted and lost, that I thought maybe it was not the right profession for me the whole time even though I still was so interested in it as a science, I just couldn't figure out what a life with this profession really looks like... Your channel helped me have an image of the possibilities of practicing it and put me back in track. Inspiring content! sending love from Istanbul...

This is, I believe, the very healthy and the only right approach to work through your life as an architect. Instead of focusing on profit only, having the possibility to choose the project we know will make us grow during the designing process, the comfort of being able to organize our work routine in a way that suits us and bring best results, the freedom to work so close to home, without loosing touch with the loved ones, keeping space for all other passions and incorporating them into our work.. This is what i'd call a real success not only in architect's life, but every person's life. I hope one day all architects could arrive to this stage in their careers and I wish this to all :) Great video, very inspiring, motivating and heartwarming even. Well done!
