Great instructions as usual! Somewhat similar to Peter Cowen's "spin it down" with the difference that he advocated extremely stiff wrists while you have softer ones. Comments please.
In most cases, we are trying to get rid of tension during the release. Some players like to use more lead wrist tension to ensure the clubface is more stable. I am one of those players myself. But I came from a high rate of closure. So, I use more tension in the lead wrist through the point of contact and throw it hard from the trail hand with it almost coming off the club like Freddie or Vijay. Some players like to control the face with the trail hand as it sits in behind the club, which does require them to be more firm and apply pressure from the trail wrist on the clubshaft. Its really player dependent as there are way too many variables to list that can change the complexity of the hitting area.
@@MyGolfDNASeems it all comes down to sequence. I feel it if I am a bit early with my throw as it feels all out of time with the lower body. I find it very difficult to wait for the club and get too quick with the downswing?

i've always been told that flipping the club in the downswing kills power, and i should be maintaining lag in the downswing. agree with what he says about throwing the club in the follow through. have seen many YT videos that support these tenets.
You definitely want to preserve lag in the downswing but you also need to get rid of it as well. Trying to hang on to lag is what really gets people into trouble. It tends to make for an unstable hitting area and the club having no consistent bottom out point, higher rates of rotation and dynamic loft numbers end up all over the place.
@@MyGolfDNA i guess the trick is learning how to whip the club head into impact while keeping the wrists and arms relaxed and loose. my problem is an armsy downswing where my arms pull the club into impact and i wind up with sore arms after hitting only a half bucket of balls.
Hey Chris.. glad you talked about the shoulder shrug, I suffer from this big time. It makes me early release at P5. Any suggestions on how to throw like this without early release?
If you’re throwing it early, there’s a pretty strong chance that your hips stopped working to clear out. If you keep the hips moving to a 35-45 degree open position, that will move the arms and shoulders into delivery for you allowing you to feel more patient as a whole in the down swing. I just published a new video on this topic yesterday. Maybe check that one out and see if it helps you bring it together. If not, let me know and I’ll help you further figure out what the issue is.
When I was younger, we used to say "crack the whip and let it go". A good way to figure out what the job of trail arm and wrist should be is rehearsing with the only trail arm holding the club for any shot before actually hitting the ball, you'll get the sensation of a surprising free throw down to the ground, a real snap and even a tiny, short divot that indicates that the snap has acquired a nice, appropriate speed at the exact right time, i.e. impact. That's one of my usual warming drills, it works 😉!
Chris I am in a downward spiral of TH-cam instruction, from Shawn Clement, to Steve Pratt, Stuart Cartwright, etc. etc. etc. Everyone is teaching such different stuff or at least different in the way I translate it. I love the way you teach but man I am so scared to keep changing every few weeks chasing something real. I guess I am just rambling, looking for a path I can not only stick with but one that results in good golf if I put in the work. Sorry to whine, just love this game and can't get to where I want to be.
Pastor Jason, golf instruction is not something any of us instructors are ever going to agree upon. In fact, it is the exact opposite. It’s a constant and indirect contest with zero end in sight. Here’s something for you to think about… I personally realized something a few years ago when it comes to helping people within the game of golf… I will NOT have best solution for every single client that I come into contact with regardless of how good I think I might be. Every single student of the game, including myself, learns, processes and uses the information very differently. I feel like the “best golf instructors” is more subjective than ever. Instructors are rated how? Do the “important” organizations poll ALL instructors world wide, along with their student base to see how much they impacted their student base with their average scores/handicap? Absolutely NOT. The point of what I’m saying is… You need to have instruction that is geared to what your specific golf game brings to the table. There is a lot of moving parts right? We need to look at who you are as a golfer! How much time you play and practice, how old you are, where you lose shots to par, do you have any pain issues, what your goals are, etc. the list could go on really. All of that information is what makes up YOU and your DNA (pease excuse the cliche). That information is critical for us instructors to outline the plan for you to move forward with. I would have to look directly at all of the moving parts that you have in the game of golf, before I would put any sort of “seal of approval” or know that you’re working on the right things at the right time. I personally like facts based information. I like information that can be supported through data and science. I have met a ton of students that don’t care for that. They just want to know a different movement that can do something good for them. As instructors, we should always put YOU, the students first and be willing to learn from one another to ultimately help people play the game that we all love, while be respectful of one another. If you want to talk further about it, there is a contact email in the description. I can show you how we handle business with our clients here at mygolfDNA.
Thanks you very much for spending the time to explain your views on it. I very much appreciate that. For me and I think many others we have fallen into the idea that a tip or a new swing thought or fell is gonna suddenly change our games and we are gonna win the club championships instead of hard work. Unfortunately most of you no nothing about what to actually work on. I appreciate your approach, thank you again.@@MyGolfDNA
Shawn Clement is very kinetic ordinated. As I am sure you have seen him actually having drills throwing old clubs down the fairway. All of it boils down to the snap (throw) and where it happens.
fantastic post. can't tell you how many YT golf instruction vids i've watched that conflict with each other. it's so confusing trying to learn how to swing the golf club in a way that is pain free but also produces respectable distance and accuracy. something is really wrong with the way golf pros are teaching people, there is no standardization or simplification of technique.
With that straight right arm at impact, you are developing a swing that is 100% timing-based with a lot of face rotation through impact (P6 - P8). That motion will lead to less consistency, in my humble opinion. The extend-and-throw motion demands a lot of time on the range in order to develop proper timing. Watch Viktor Hovland hit the ball … his trail elbow is bent at impact and the trail wrist is still in extension. It’s a “late hit.” The release is not at impact but post impact. This leads to a more stable face through impact, and Hovland still hits the ball a mile, so you don’t have to sacrifice distance for accuracy.
Thank you for the comments but it's a little unfair for you to use blanket statements of "setting up your followers for inconsistent ball striking" after your very pointed opinions in regards to the drill outlined in this video. Here are my points for you to think about... 1. Love Viktor and what he's doing in the game of golf. However, I would not teach his action to the masses as what he does the downward half, is not something a lot of older or less athletic students can do safely. 2. Learning a movement pattern is a biological process that takes repetitions or as you would call it "inordinate amount of time on the range in order to time the swing". Timing can be extracted from any new movement pattern when the brains pathways become insulated heavily enough to allow the electrical impulses to fire in a sequence the same way EVERY single time (the subconscious is a powerful being). I believe in clubface stability, but I also know that releasing the club and the release patterns, as we see them, can be very different from one player to the next. So, my question back to you, is what movement in the golf swing, until ingrained, isn't considered a "timed" move? 3. This drill was to help students put speed in the right spot, we never truly hit positions in the swing. In a full swing, we move through positions like impact. How players do it, can be vastly different and dependent on many factors what shot shape they want to hit, the path, aoa, the grip, what they like to use as their squaring mechanism for the face. I take helping people play this game very seriously and I do my very best to help people understand what would work best for them when it comes to swinging the golf club fast while keeping it in play. I know there are a lot of students/instructors out there with a lot of great information but to post something about my "appealing personality" before you say that Im setting my students up for bad golf is a lot unfair.
@@MyGolfDNA Wow! I did not expect a response to my comment, much less a thoughtful, detailed, and well articulated one. Thank you for your comments. After watching this video (which first popped up on my video recommendations), I immediately went to watch Part 1 in the series. I now have a better understanding of what you are trying to teach, and I jumped the gun on my comments, and I humbly apologize. There is little question that you are a serious golf instructor (combined with a pleasant demeanor and nice sense of humor). While I think the key to playing consistent golf is stable face control with a low rate of closure, I don’t think what you teach is inconsistent with that belief. Thank you again for taking the time to respond in a respectful manner. You just earned a subscriber. 👊👊
Thank YOU for hearing me out and offering the same sort of respect in return. Most will just post and go! Clubface is king and how we manage it in the swing shape and stabilize it through contact is the key to consistent golf for sure. Thank you for the sub. I wish you much success with your game and if there is anything I can help you with in the future, don't hesitate to ask.
Hi there! I wont be able to show you but I can tell you that the tension levels in the arms should be on a scale from 1-10, 10 being rigid and tense, I would try to keep the tension levels down to 3-4. Think about the tension levels you feel in the arm when throwing a ball. Hope that helps.
Good video Chris - as far as it goes. You don't say what should happen just before impact where the shaft handle should be going around the body which will close the club face, producing the slingshot effect.
I have a video on this topic. Not sure if I have it on the channel or the website. If I do not have it on the channel, I will work on one on the sooner side. Thanks for watching and hope you join me for more in the future.
Chris First time seeing you on TH-cam. If you never heard of Mike Austin who mentored Mike Dunaway look him up. Guarantee you’ll see the the similarities. Been a student of the swing for close to 50 years. What doesn’t get taught enough is the importance of maintaining the upper body angles on the downswing. My biggest problem is keeping the top of spine and having the belly button going forwarded, in other words my top of spine moves forward with my belly button. Thumbs up on this video. I hit the sub button to see what you have to offer
Thanks for joining us on the channel. I very much appreciate it. I have definitely heard of Mike Austin and not the first time I have heard this. I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Students tend to use the legs improperly and then the upper body angles are much harder to neutralize. This runs us into all sorts of plane shift and a low point that is very hard to manage. Hope you continue to join us for more in the future. Love to work with true students of the game like yourself.
Chris, Hogan talked about hitting with his right (trail) hand as hard as with his left hand. Are you conscious of “hitting hard” with the trail hand during the drill?
You can just keep the tension levels down in the wrist so the club can release properly. I’d start off my adding small doses of right side so you can make sure you’re not disrupting the control. It’s hard to find the perfect balance really. Hope that helps.
Mark, so nice to hear from you!!! Hope you're doing great. Thank you again for the kind words and support. Always enjoyed working with you.@@singledigitgolf9301

i play with a friend who strikes his ball much like what is described in this video. He really sends the ball down the fairway. The only problem is that sometime the ball can go anywhere.
Absolutely! You do not need a ton of arm strength to be able to create the push movement I demonstrate here. Just make sure you're working hard to develop good sequence and using leverage properly and that makes up for a lack of strength in the smaller muscles.
Everybody has their "correct" way. Here, the crazy part, relative to the title, is that the presenter is in fact turning before and thru impact-just like any good player.
Here’s a different way to think of things… If you and I went to any PGA or LPGA tour player and asked them to make a full speed driver swing, but without a club in their hands. What would it look like? There’s a pretty good chance we would see them setup, make a backswing and move all the way to finish. We wouldn’t see them stop, throw their arms and then move to finish. Even through we can measure and see this stuff with a system like gears. Even though you see me move through impact, I can assure you, I produce my speed with a release of the hands and arms independently of the body. Understanding kinematic sequence is a good starting point for nay sayers. I do agree with you when you say “everybody has their correct way”. Some are more safe and efficient than others.
Not opposed to that at all. Just need to make sure the arms are working down from the top. The hips will pull the shoulders around and creating restriction is never a bad idea.
Momentum may have carried my shoulders a touch open. Tough to tell perfectly from face on. Secondary spine tilt can give you that appearance when looking at it in 2D.
Alienating your audience with an attitude isn't a good start. This was my first watch of your videos and I stopped after you told me to go elsewhere and for the hell of it I watched your earlier video. I'm not against 15min videos but I can see what the comment reaction was all about, the first 8 minutes was pure waffle. After your unfortunate intro this one was much better. Clear, concise and informative so credit where it's due
90% of golf instruction is undoing misunderstood golf instruction. Either misunderstood at the time or drifting away from correct over time. So many golf swing are just people doing what they think is right based on flawed translation of feel and real. The rest is just people having too high expectation and trying to do things they are not capable of consistently.
I'd certainly work on fixing the hooking issue first before I start trying to add speed to the mix like this drill outlines. We would need to look at why the path is so in to out and then work on getting the rate of closure in the clubface and AOA into a manageable position for sure. You can be fixed. Just need to make sure you follow a specific order to achieve the best results.
Try looking up ball compression, this works if you apply the power almost after impact. A great drill is the no backswing drill. Apply power on the follow through only, do this 10 times then hit the ball.

The secret is in holding the right wrist angle until after impact! Great video! Thanks!
Bingo! New video on that very topic today.
Very nice video, thanks.
Yep, I talk about that indirectly in part 1 th-cam.com/video/dE40ZrQaVNc/w-d-xo.html
Great Advice drill video tips
Love this move!!!!
Love that you love this move:)
Great video _ Thank you
Great drill! Love it!
How are you supposed to compress the ball while casting? Every ball you hit was thin.
Thanks for the video.
Good job! This is how I was taught to hit a golfball back in the 1960s!
Here’s something for you to think about…
I personally realized something a few years ago when it comes to helping people within the game of golf…
I will NOT have best solution for every single client that I come into contact with regardless of how good I think I might be.
The point of what I’m saying is…
You need to have instruction that is geared to what your specific golf game brings to the table.
Hi
Please can you show or let me know , how much if any tension or force in the arms is required in the downswing
Hi there! I wont be able to show you but I can tell you that the tension levels in the arms should be on a scale from 1-10, 10 being rigid and tense, I would try to keep the tension levels down to 3-4. Think about the tension levels you feel in the arm when throwing a ball. Hope that helps.
@@MyGolfDNA thankyou that really helps
I am so jealous. She is adorable, and smart!
hmmm...
Golf simpler than that. I have a childhood past time that I use to visualize the best way to hit a golf ball.
Thanks!
Thank YOU so much!!!! Very much appreciated.

Please open an academy in Dallas !!
You find the place and I might just do that.
@@MyGolfDNA North Texas "Dallas" is a huge market for golf. That's why the new PGA Headquarters was built in Frisco,Tx. Their is indoor golf popping up everywhere where I live looking for instructors to instruct. Most have Trackman, Putt View, etc. You won't have any issues finding a place indoor or out in North Texas because of the large amount of families moving to North Texas. Instructors can't keep up with the business. I'm a realtor so I can easily find you a home. 😄
Sounds pretty enticing honestly. I’ll have to get you in contact with the wife though. She’s the one you have to sell on it. I’ll screen shot this message and text it to her right now to test the waters. 🤣
Chris, is this only for our irons? 3wood of the tee? Thats what i use as my Driver, thanks
You can use this with any club in the bag. Just make sure you stay in sequence and drive with the legs and hips. Good luck.
Thanks again for your advice an help
Is this exactly the same for driver and the longer clubs ?
You betcha.
@@MyGolfDNA Thanks Chris, Ive only just come across your channel and some of your teaching really resonates. I thikn its time to decide to stop jumping from different channels and trying to take snippets of information from different instructors and pick and beleive and focus on one; I think ive found mine with yourself. Heres hoping but your instruction is very clear and precise and easy to understand. Keep up the great work.
Happy to have you on the channel and will do what I can to help you play your best golf. Remember, take your time and work on things in the correct order. Stay disciplined and you'll see results.
This guy is a teacher that I wish lived in Vegas
I mean, I do love Vegas. Could be making a little tour in that direction at some point:)
I have looked at dozens of golf instructions by dozens of different instructors and l can honestly say that you are the best.
The only other instructor that is on par and teaches the same but with less detail is P Harrington the golf pro.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really happy to hear you like the details of my videos. So many people like the quick fix stuff these days. Happy to have you on the channel and let me know if you need any help along the way.
i play with a friend who strikes his ball much like what is described in this video. He really sends the ball down the fairway. The only problem is that sometime the ball can go anywhere.
Try recommending them a wrist strength trainer, the inconsistency comes from poor wrist control. Stronger, trained wrists, will deviate less.
Or tell him to start working on retraining his release pattern. I have an impact video series on the channel that would help him.
Awesome video! I subbed. What club are you using to practice?
Thanks for joining the channel, I very much appreciate it. I think I was hitting a 7 iron in this one.
Does this method apply t to the driver also?
Would you or a player with not a lot of hand and arm strength be able to use same technique with the driver or long clubs?
Here’s a different way to think of things…
If you and I went to any PGA or LPGA tour player and asked them to make a full speed driver swing, but without a club in their hands.
I would love to know how - if at all - you would incorporate the constant advice to keep one’s back to the target as long as possible. Bad advice?
Not opposed to that at all. Just need to make sure the arms are working down from the top. The hips will pull the shoulders around and creating restriction is never a bad idea.
Great video but your shoulders are clearly not square at impact! Right?🙏
Momentum may have carried my shoulders a touch open. Tough to tell perfectly from face on. Secondary spine tilt can give you that appearance when looking at it in 2D.
Much appreciated Chris thanks! I just can’t imagine my sternum facing the ball at contact! Thanks again for your time and expertise!🙏🙏🙏
I’m brand new to the channel . What’s your name ?
Welcome to the channel. My name is Chris Tyler.
I agree wholeheartedly!
I already hook the ball... this seems like a good way to make it worse.
I’m 81 and I scored 81 today for the first time by throwing instead of swinging.
Thata’ boy. Love to hear that. Keep it going!
Is that how you hit a ball thin as f***😂
If this happens apply the power later, practice doing it at and after impact and not before.
Why do you say shoulders are square? They clearly are open.
Another commercial golf "instruction" . To acheive real impact condition....its more intricate. Sorry
Try looking up ball compression, this works if you apply the power almost after impact. A great drill is the no backswing drill. Apply power on the follow through only, do this 10 times then hit the ball.
