For those of you not wanting to watch all 27 minutes to find the 7 settings: 1) enable RAW or RAW + JPEG 2) set autofocus to AF-A for a happy medium between AF-S and AF-C 3) set shooting style (filter) to neutral 4) customize menu button to ISO settings button 5) customize "C" button to drive mode 6) turn audio signals to shutter sound only 7) set frame rates for movies to 24p for a smooth look, or 60p for slow motion options 8) turn on the wind reduction setting for video 9) using manual mode allows you to fully utilize the camera to its full extent
Whenever shooting video on manual mode you should put your shutter speed at double the fps of your camera, as point and shoots film on a 180 degree shutter aperture. For example: 60p video at 1/125th, 30p video at 1/60th, etc
Thank you so much for sharing this information! I recently ordered my RX100 V and can't wait to start using it. Several reviewers had mentioned that the user friendliness was not so great but your explanation of the settings makes it a lot less intimidating.
Regarding the C button change to Drive Mode: the left ring button is the Drive Mode button by default (in your video, you can see that on your camera it's mapped to it when you bring up those settings). So unless you're re-mapping the left ring button to something else, you would presumably map the "C button" to a different function.
Just one thing about shutter settings when shooting video. You should always set the shutter speed to twice the frame rate. Like if you are shooting 25fps the shutter should be at 1/50, 30fps at /160 and 60fps at 1/120. This is a must to keep in mind when shooting video on cameras where you need to set the shutter speed instead of shutter angle. 2x shutter speed does the same as the 180 degree rule (shutter angle) in cinema cameras. This will give you the best balance of sharpness and motion between frames.
Johannes Jonsson not a must, if your video project is set to 30fps but you’re dropping in 60fps footage, that footage doesnt need to follow this rule, shutter would be set to 1/60 suppose to 1/120.
Johannes Jonsson as mentioned in the video he likes to record in 60fps and slow footage down when needed, so the project is still 30fps and the shutter should be set to 1/60
Michael J. Powter The rule applies to the frame rate at the time of recording (capture speed), regardless of what you do with it during post (target playback speed). So if you capture at 60fps, the 1/120 shutter speed recommendation applies.
Just FYI the in camera guide is used when you have a setting selected. When a setting is highlighted, press the C button and it will give you a tip and tell you what that setting does. Still I reprogrammed it.
Great tutorial, thank you. Just wanted to mention, #3 ("shooting style" or Creative Style) should NOT affect the RAW image - only the output JPEG. So if you're someone like me that uses JPEG 99% of the time, only developing from RAW on occasion (but still shooting in RAW+JPEG format), you may want to leave the Creative Style to the default Standard. When you DO decide to "develop" the photo, you'll be starting with the RAW image, which is not at all affected by the Creative Style setting. The rest of the changes look good to me - getting my RX100 VA (best low-light pocket cam ever made) today, can't wait to play with it.
I just bought this camera and is my first camera I have purchased. I got it as I have started a youtube channel but know absolutely nothing about photography or camera settings. Your video was a massive help and feel I have just learnt and understood so much. You earned another subscriber and a massive LIKE!! Thx
Got my first camera since the day before yesterday. I will immediately implement most of what you have explained here. A very educational video, thank you.
I'm a few years late, but I have another good one: If you plan on using the HFR modes, change 'record setting' to 60p. Since it plays the whole clip while saving, it'll take half the time to save. Then reduce it to 30 or 24p in editing later if desired
For people photography, I prefer AF-S, since at least on *my camera (RX100 VA or M5A), you lose the automatic eye AF in AF-A (presumably the camera doesn't have enough time to evaluate for automatic eye AF while continuous-focusing?). In AF-S, the camera WILL re-focus between shots, just not DURING the burst. So unless your subject is moving substantially (or you are) DURING that burst, it shouldn't be a problem. Of course if you're expecting rapid subject movement during the burst, you would temporarily change it from AF-S to AF-A or better yet AF-C.
I am so glad I found your channel ,just subscribed it ,being a novice but very keen on learning without going through the hassle of flipping pages of manual that teaches crap, you my friend will be my source of knowledge of all those confusing manual modes ... You rock!!
Good video, thanks. Just a question. In Manual, when I select Flexible spot (to move my focus around) then Shutter Speed is disabled. Apparently, I have not full manual control: Apertures, Shutter Speed, focus, etc. Is it because I don't know how to make work or a camera limitation? Thanks. :)
Hello, I use my camera to show live feed of coins to a TH-cam feed for selling an auction. The mount I use basically the camera is upside down. How can I change the orientation so that even if the camera is upside down the feed is right side up. Many thanks, Chris
Thanks for the awesome video. I have one irritating problem which I don't know how to change; I constantly end up changing my shutter speed or aperture settings by accidentally touching the control wheel. I thought "wheel lock" would take care of this but, doesn't. Is there a way to change this? Thanks again for all your awesome videos!
Hello dear Nice video Can I ask you about one issue Shutter speed under water How to change it from standard to custom I have seafrogs housing I can only change apparatus
Spinning the rear wheel can not be set to a custom function on my RX100 VI and it's an absolute shame, especially when it could be set as anything on earlier Sony cameras like the a7s. I'm used to quickly set my ISO by spining that wheel, but for some reason it can't be done on the RX100 and I have to do way more things (which takes more time) to adjust the iso…
I just got my Sony RX100 V and when I watch my videos back I can hear a knocking in them when I move. I stopped filming and then even turned the camera off and I can hear this knocking when it shakes, even very mildly moving it can have this knocking sound. How do you get around this?!?
seen that this camera has a in camera guide that can be assigned to the c trash button but i dont see any guide appearing instruction manual appearing on the screen.
I’m really late into the RX100V theater! Just got mine yesterday. Hope Sony doesn’t announce a VI in the next few months.I enjoyed watching your video. Have to search for your other videos. Thanks.
Yes, the mark VI is out, but $200 more and slower lens. I like the 24-200mm but am not sacrificing my fast f1.8 lens since when traveling, I like to take photos inside buildings like churches. If I was buying again, I would still get the mark V.
Does this camera offer a side timer as an option along with the video? I need when I slow down the video, I still can calculate the speed of movements for a certain scientific use.
Hi, nice tips. Do you set shortcut button for AE lock? becauce when you use flexible focus and spot metering, the spot metering keep meter on the spot, not following the focus right?
hi Jerad, i have a question about the file fomat XAVC S HD, after i insert my SD card into my mac book, i got the file name PRIVATE - M4ROOT- CLIP i can't import that clips into imovie , it said unimportable . please help me how i can import them.
Thanks for video. I just bought my first Sony camera being this rx100 v for my travels. I have always shot cannon and always been dslr. I’m ready for the challenge of learning new camera and especially ready for the low light capabilities everyone has always raved about with Sony. I have one question. Can u attach a link or tell me on amazon what to search for to find my audio muff things. lol. I can’t seem to find em anywhere have never bought any cause I had a ride mic which can’t use anymore so have to have these muffs lol. Thanks for help in advance.
hi mate ,, could you please help me with this issue iv had with my rx100v ?? iv started shooting in RAW format on my rx 100 v after many many many years using jpeg ,, but iv noticed that you can still access the creative style menu and change the style ????? , its not dulled out like most the settings when you have selected RAW? i thought raw was raw and you couldnt change any colour setting at all ? for now iv left the creative style in neutral ,,,,how come it allows you to set the creative style when in raw mode ? any help would be fab and which creative style setting are you ment to leave it in for the best raw image possible ?? im confused lol ,,,,, any help would be fab ,,,, cheers
You have the European PAL version, you can switch to NTSC in RX100 options for 24 60 and 120. But if you don't want light flickers you should use PAL in PAL countries and NTSC in NTSC countries. ^_^
Hi, my mk5 doest show all the fps settings in recored setting when xavcs HD is selected? The only option I have 25,50 and 100 fps mode? any ideas? Thanks
FlyTwoHigh 83 your camera is set to PAL mode. change it to NTSC and you'll have the 60 and 120 options available. make sure you backup whatever is on your memory card as changing the mode formats your card as well
Is the Autofocus for still and video so much better in the Rx100 v? I got the Rx100 iv for 600 dollars new. While the Rx100 v costs 1000 dollar where i live. Is the focus worth 400 dollars? I don’t know, but i feel so tempted to get a new camera just for the better focus.
The auto focus was a little bit better on the RX 100 V. For most people I don’t think it would’ve been worth the upgrade from the version four. The version six was just announced the other day and that is said to have a substantial improvement over the version five as far as auto focus. When I am bummed about is that they traded out more zoom for the wide aperture. I liked the f/1.8. If you were going to spend the extra money, I would recommend jumping from version four to version six. I have mine on pre-order so I will be reviewing it soon.
Ditch Auto I forgot something else, the RX100 iv still has the fast lens, while the 6 as more zoom but not as fast lens as the 4 will there be less lowlight performance? Im getting slowly confused. And more important there is no ND filter. The iv and v has a integrated ND filter. The 6 also has no white led lcd plus less pixels.
How do I delay the "timer settings" to take interval (2 seconds - than snap ) pictures ? The timer takes 3 pictures in one shot ... I would prefer the camera to take a shot than pause and take again like the 'old skoo'l compact cameras did in the past.
thats the auto focus illuminator. you can turn that off in the settings. also known as AF illuminator. its a light to help the camera focus when its too dark.
Hi ! Thanks for video, It was very useful. I buy an RX100 MK V european version. It's very different from yours. For example... In the setting "record setting" your camera has 5 options : 60p 50M - 30p 50M - 24p 50M - 120p 100M - 120p 60M, you suggesting the option 60p 50M. My camera instead, in that setting has only 4 options : 50p 50M - 25p 50M - 100p 100M - 100p 60M. Perhaps Europe's cameras are different from those sold in the US ? maybe it's my bad ? Please, any suggestions ? I send you pics of my fotocamera. Tanks a lot Ciao
Guys I have question.. They says: You can now record video at 1000fps for a full 7 seconds. What if I use "Lexar 512GB Professional UHS-I SDXC Memory Card (U3)" .... ?? Or its better to use "Lexar 256GB Professional 1000x UHS-II SDXC Memory Card Class 10, UHS Speed Class 3)..?? Will this Memory card work well with this camera..? Thank you in advance for your help.
With my RX100M3 if i shoot in "RAW only" i can still upload an image to a smartphone and that imege will be automatically converted in JPG ans uploaded as JPG. There is no point to shoot RAW+JPG other than have a jpg copy of all the images on the SD.
Thanks for a great video! Which case are you using for this camera? btw, the in camera guide only works while you're in the menu, not while using the camera - of course you can repurpose that button fit use while shooting as your demonstrated. I really appreciated the information you shared in this video.
Hey, can you HELP plz! Im having a terrible problem I cannot find the setting to change to fix... So, every time I set up a shot, to record a video, I will be all ready to go, push record, and then it zooms in 25% or so, everytime! Its so annoying, and im finding myself deleting videos because they are too zoomed in and also it sucks because its not the shot im preparing.. there has to be a way to fix this! $1000 f ing camera.. ugh
set your camera to movie mode and shutter priority if 4K 30p shutter 1/60 "focus area Wide" will not zoom in ........ i notice with M mode and S mode it looks like it zoom in ( am not an expert ;) am asking for help here also haha
KK 5264 Yes. Depending on the selected capturing and focus mode, you can control the aperture with the "focus ring" or the control ring on the back of the camera. That's possible when using "Aperture Priority" or Manual mode.
Good explanation on frame rates. Now I know when to use 60fps. I've been using 24fps but there was always that nagging feeling that 60fps (less blur between frames) would be better. Sticking to 24fps. Even at 24fps slowing down with FCPX at 1/2 speed is still not too bad and has an aura. You could do a whole show on all the frame rate/bit rate/file type settings and hope you will. I notice that digging around in the files that are created with the RX100 M5, that MOV files are created, and I've been using those for editing. Right? Wrong?
if you use RAW you can change the picture in a better quality photo ( in Adobe Lightroom) your timelapse will be better ;) you have to apply the preset to all the pictures and then make your timelapse ;) if you don't know what i mean search for [ serge ramelli timelapse ]
For those of you not wanting to watch all 27 minutes to find the 7 settings:
1) enable RAW or RAW + JPEG
2) set autofocus to AF-A for a happy medium between AF-S and AF-C
3) set shooting style (filter) to neutral
4) customize menu button to ISO settings button
5) customize "C" button to drive mode
6) turn audio signals to shutter sound only
7) set frame rates for movies to 24p for a smooth look, or 60p for slow motion options
8) turn on the wind reduction setting for video
9) using manual mode allows you to fully utilize the camera to its full extent
Thank you.
praise jesus hallelujah for this comment
Very helpful, thanks
Saved me 27 precious minutes of my life
did what the op forgot to

I switched flash control on the wheel to AEL and it makes a HUGE improvement. No exposure issues since.

Recently bought the Miii. I love it and found some useful bits of info from your tutorial. Many thanks from the UK.
Very well done - thanks! Im on my 3rd RX100 camera and learned a lot of new things that apply across models.
EXCELLENT! I just bought one, and this is a great starting point, thanks.

Great video. My RX100 V doesn't allow to enable AF-A or Phase detection. It tells "invalid with this lens". I am curios to know what I need to do.
FYI 2022 AND I STILL USE IT , LOVELY CAMERA
I just picked up a RX100 MKIII, I'm guessing the same settings apply?

Hi Jerad! Could you tell me the brand/name of your case?
I can't find anything similar
Hello dear
Nice video
Can I ask you about one issue
Shutter speed under water
How to change it from standard to custom
I have seafrogs housing
I can only change apparatus
My rx100 iii had black and white with one color. Can this camera do the same? I'm having trouble finding that filter
I'm shooting only RAW and I can still share my images to my phone through Sony PlayMemories (which converts the raw to JPG during transfer).
True. But it's not in full resolution.
Spinning the rear wheel can not be set to a custom function on my RX100 VI and it's an absolute shame, especially when it could be set as anything on earlier Sony cameras like the a7s.

seen that this camera has a in camera guide that can be assigned to the c trash button but i dont see any guide appearing instruction manual appearing on the screen.
Informative tutorial. Thanks!
Are you use this camera on wedding shooting for video/still?
Thanks for the settings. I was wondering if the Sony RX100 V has any longer charging cables. Thanks.
what are the precise products he use for the audio setup on this camera, can you put a link to amazon?
I’m really late into the RX100V theater! Just got mine yesterday. Hope Sony doesn’t announce a VI in the next few months.I enjoyed watching your video. Have to search for your other videos. Thanks.
looks like they did but im still getting a mark V since the price is way cheaper

So if you want to shoot a moving subject do you use AF-A or AF-C? I have never used AF-A modes on cameras, only AF-S or AF-C
+Greg Profitt I use AF-A. I have found that leaving the camera in AF-C causes a lot of for us searching when you don't need it.
did you test what diaphragm aperture gives the best sharpness?
This is extremely valuable. Thank you.
I have a Nikon D5100 with 24/70 lens and a prime 50mm 1.8 lens. Should I sell this equipment to buy this RX100V?
hi Jerad, i have a question about the file fomat XAVC S HD, after i insert my SD card into my mac book, i got the file name PRIVATE - M4ROOT- CLIP i can't import that clips into imovie , it said unimportable . please help me how i can import them.
do you have something like this for mark 4 ? coz some of the settings you adjust here my m4 doesnt have
Some good info but I'm surprised that you didn't mention the eye autofocus feature.
what kind of setting required to take very clean photograph for micro size particles and camera is very close to the objects.
Macro is in the scenes menu.

hi mate ,,
could you please help me with this issue iv had with my rx100v ??
iv started shooting in RAW format on my rx 100 v after many many many years using jpeg ,, but iv noticed that you can still access the creative style menu and change the style ????? , its not dulled out like most the settings when you have selected RAW? i thought raw was raw and you couldnt change any colour setting at all ? for now iv left the creative style in neutral ,,,,how come it allows you to set the creative style when in raw mode ? any help would be fab and which creative style setting are you ment to leave it in for the best raw image possible ?? im confused lol ,,,,, any help would be fab ,,,, cheers
Thanks great vid
hi Jerad,
I just got my rx100 v and i only have options for 50p 50M, 25p 50M, 100p 100M, and 100p 60M.
No 24 60 or 120.
Please advise.
Cheers,
You have the European PAL version, you can switch to NTSC in RX100 options for 24 60 and 120. But if you don't want light flickers you should use PAL in PAL countries and NTSC in NTSC countries. ^_^
Great vid👍 thank you so much
do you know how to change drive mode in selfie mode?
The neutral Setting ist only for JPEG images. RAW is RAW.
.. and video ;)
I set mine to vivid, thinking I can always go back to raw, if not satisfied
thank you very much for your helping instructions for my new RX100V. Greetings from Germany.

And more important there is no ND filter. The iv and v has a integrated ND filter. The 6 also has no white led lcd plus less pixels.
Thank you !
Did you find a program for the RAW conversion yet?
How do I delay the "timer settings" to take interval (2 seconds - than snap ) pictures ? The timer takes 3 pictures in one shot ... I would prefer the camera to take a shot than pause and take again like the 'old skoo'l compact cameras did in the past.
may i know your camera do you use to record this video and your lens mm? i plan to buy DSLR thank you.
there is this red light that flashes sometimes when its a darker spot, what is that for? and can the setting be turned off? thanks
thats the auto focus illuminator. you can turn that off in the settings. also known as AF illuminator. its a light to help the camera focus when its too dark.
thanks man.. hope you have an answer to 1 more thing I posted up top, thanks for any help..
Than's for you tips have this camera coming to me in the next 2 days and will follow your guidance.
Great info! Saves a lot of time. Thanks!
I need to order a micro SD card for this same camera... any recommendations?
stki92626 for video a san disk 64gb
For stills 32gb
stki92626 it's not a micro card, standard ad card. Look for class 10 U3. I went for Sandusky extreme pro and have no issues
hey, i don't kno why i do not have af-a, how can i solve it ?
Hi ! Thanks for video, It was very useful. I buy an RX100 MK V european version. It's very different from yours. For example... In the setting "record setting" your camera has 5 options : 60p 50M -

Perhaps Europe's cameras are different from those sold in the US ? maybe it's my bad ? Please, any suggestions ? I send you pics of my fotocamera.
Tanks a lot
Ciao
Same here. // EU :/
Switch to NTSC from PAL. tab #3 on under the toolbox menu in the settings.
Hi Ola ! Thanks a lot ! :-)
Just be prepared for the annoying warning message at every power on! :P
Any chance to extend my video length? It cuts down after 5 min or 2GB
+Michał N Must be the card you are using or are you shooting 4K? Make sure your formatting your card in the camera as well.
Ditch Auto I'm using SanDisk Extreme PRO 128 GB SDXC UHS-I and shooting in 1080p
Does it only change from .raw to .jpg or it also apply the color/contrast filter that is here when we shot in JPG ? :D
$1000 f ing camera.. ugh
set your camera to movie mode and shutter priority if 4K 30p shutter 1/60 "focus area Wide" will not zoom in ........ i notice with M mode and S mode it looks like it zoom in ( am not an expert ;) am asking for help here also haha
why do my MKv have different menu and options??
Super informative! Thank you!
How many apply to m7?
Great video, thanx!
It’s a nice camera.. mine going up for sale In favor of the q2

Thanks. Thats helps me a lot.
Love it !! Thank you a billion
Great video, thanks for sharing! New sub
Can I control the F-Stop (Aperture)?
KK 5264 Yes. Depending on the selected capturing and focus mode, you can control the aperture with the "focus ring" or the control ring on the back of the camera. That's possible when using "Aperture Priority" or Manual mode.
Great and useful!!
My menu screen is slighly different im confused?
Good explanation on frame rates. Now I know when to use 60fps. I've been using 24fps but there was always that nagging feeling that 60fps (less blur between frames) would be better. Sticking to 24fps. Even at 24fps slowing down with FCPX at 1/2 speed is still not too bad and has an aura. You could do a whole show on all the frame rate/bit rate/file type settings and hope you will. I notice that digging around in the files that are created with the RX100 M5, that MOV files are created, and I've been using those for editing. Right? Wrong?
You are a guy with thoughts
C button works to explain positions in menu
if youre shooting a timelapse with pictures, do you have to set only JPEG or RAW? if you have JPEG+RAW, would the timelapse have doubles?
if you use RAW you can change the picture in a better quality photo ( in Adobe Lightroom) your timelapse will be better ;) you have to apply the preset to all the pictures and then make your timelapse ;) if you don't know what i mean search for [ serge ramelli timelapse ]
Awesome tips of the terrible Sony Menu System!
Becker Inal douchebag I have used Canon and the menu seems horrible to me...you know why, because I am not used to it so stop whining
lol
You kinda messed up with framerate explanations but otherwise it is great.
