I love the RX100 VII, but it's amazing to think it came out five years ago and they seem to have forgotten about both it and the RX10 series. It's also hard to get hold of new in some regions including the UK. But yes I agree, when my back started hurting - actually it was my knees in my case - I downsized to the RX100 VII and made a video all about travelling light. I ended up trading the zoom for the fixed lens and bigger sensor of the X100V for my travels, but I'm very happy with either.
Got one last year 2023 as my skiing camera - just perfect! Fits in slim ski jacket pocket unobtrusively, fast into action with the pop-up view finder and great IQ.
I used to use the RX100 Version 1 (10 Years Ago) - a great camera. The merged exposures in one jpeg file on low setting created some great night photos.
I bought the RX100V second hand with its great 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens and 1st in the range to have phase detect autofocus with subject tracking. It also has an active ND filter. The RX100 models after went to a greater range on the lens of 24-200mm at F2.5-4.5 which seemed a bit of a compromise for low light situations.
Bought the RX100II second hand, didn't need so much zoom. 28-100mm seems like the right range for me. Having F1.8 at 28mm wide was an important factor for me as low light was important for night shots.
I bought it 2nd hand in great condition from a private individual on Ebay for about AUS$730 in 2019. Think it was about half the retail new price at the time.
My back was killing me for years from shooting weddings with two Canon 1Dx Mark II bodies. Two weeks ago, i bought two Sony cameras and oh my God!! They're so light!!
I get that cell phones are popular for photography, but i will never understand why Sony abandoned the RX line of cameras just when they were getting so brilliant. I cant imagine how even more incredible they'd be with 2024 tech. All a Mark 8 needs is 4k 60p, better stabilization, and better low light processing.
I am using the RX100 in addition to my Nikon fullframe system, mostly for travelling. I own the model 5A and 7. I take both of them with me, because of the different lenses. The M5A for low light because of its 1.8 aperture and the M7 for outdoor, or whenever I need the 200 mm tele lens. I am well aware of the restrictions that comes from the 1” sensor, but I am very happy with them as travel companions.
I too, have both these RX models and each had there own place. Given they managed to get a full size sensor in the RX 1 I think a special version 8 with ND filter and two lenses f1.8 24-70 and f2.8 70 -200 and an APC sensor would be perfect.

Rx 100 series are a good upgrade over your phone camera these days. Now, even in 2024 I got a Mk Va not the VII strictly on aperture considerations, gotta film/take photos fast in the woods etc. And just got back from Disneyland Paris and it totally worth its money. You kinda don't want to take a bigger camera in such a crowded environement , where extension sticks/monopds are forbidden. So as a holiday trip camera paired with a carbon monopod as shooting "handle" and a couple Gopros or any other action cam you are pretty much covered.
It's crazy how I used to travel with a full setup: Camera body with extra lenses plus gimbal, action camera, backup camera, batteries and such...now, I reach for the lightest form factor. I'm good with my Sony RX100 VA, or my action cam, or my Insta360 OneX, or just my phone camera.
I've owned a RX100 Mark III for 10 years now. Very convenient for casual photography and it produces prefectly good images. The only complaint is in the lack of buttons. Choosing the autofocus point is really awkward, and should you want to focus manually, setting a dedicate button to switch between Av and focus is the fastest way.
I have the sony rx100vii, i love it, definitely use it only for certain circumstances, like when i go backpacking/hiking, family trips, or like he said its good for taking to areas like concerts. Its crazy how good it is but definitely not for everyone
Its a great camera ive owned the mark 1 version for years. It has one major flaw and that is if you get dust on the sensor like i did then it is crazy difficult to clean the sensor and it has to go back to Sony. Sensor dust can happen in a flash even if you are careful. Next camera for me Panasonic G100 m 4/3 where you can access the sensor easily.
Yes this is definitely a big issue. I have a similar camera (TZ200) and I don't know how hard it is to clean the sensor but I modified it by putting on a filter adapter, so now it has a UV filter and a lens cap. It makes it more bulky and fiddly to carry and use but gives me a more peace of mind that it's protected from dust and will last a few extra years. These are great cameras but I don't like the way the lens opens. I'd really recommend adding a filter adapter.
@@StraitKnopfler It's very difficult to clean as I had a TZ10 and that had sensor dust issues. I had to bin it in the end because it was impossible to work with a blob on the image. Nothing else wrong the camera just the blob. Nothing i did got rid of it as well. Don't forget dust can enter from the sides on the barrel lens as well as it folds away dust gets blown into the camera. The lens cap will help but the barrel is the real issue here. Keep it clean and dust free if you can.
Excellent summary. Only thing I would add is they could make it 1-2 mm thicker and taller to fit a hot shoe to be able to mount a microphone; especially Sony's own that sends audio through the hot shoe. And to send the grip that they sell separately in the box.
I have a mark 5, it still had the internal nd. I use it a ton for video, on bright days i also use a magnetic adapter with a second variable nd to get shallow dof, it makes nice video, as long as you use nd! Love that camera

Oh snaps! The legendary Dogen! Yes it was Victor! we took a road trip together to photograph the castle in the sky but as you can see, it was just a castle in the mountains 😭
At 67 years old I had to laugh. I don't nap, unless you count when I fall asleep in front of the computer. LOL. However, I did just weigh my camera backpack with the Canon 6D, 80D, Tramron 24-70, and 70-200 f2.8 lenses and a few other things in there. Around 17 libs. May explain why it gets left home a lot. I have two little Sonys. a5100 and a5000. Great little cameras, but I do miss a viewfinder. I'm considering going with a smaller M43 or taking a look at that little Sony RX. Just remember. It's not hell to get old. Just hell to feel that way.
loved my RX100 iv, and made tons of content using that because of its capability and pocket-friendly size. Wish SONY would make one more last version just like how they updated the Sony A6700 camera. Would sell my x100v for that in a heartbeat.
Bought the version VI for my next trip to Europe. Also taking Fuji xe4 with 18-55 lens. Scaling down my photo gear for this trip. For video - pocket 3 and go 3. All fits easily in a mini sling bag.
VI was a lot cheaper on the used market and my main use will be for the zoom ability on my trip. Otherwise I’ll be using the Fuji xe4 with the 18-55 lens or the 27mm 2.8 lens. Thanks for your wonderful video!
What interesting is, I searched for RX100 VII for 2 months, and could not find one. I did find Rx100 V, but I needed that 200mm. And then couple of week back I compiled a concept for How and Why there is a NEED for next RX100... I am calling that Rx100 X.
Thank you for the great video, Jason. From one old guy to another, is there another compact zoom camera that you'd recommend might have more zoom than 200mm but does not have aperture degradation and still compact enough to get through security? I like to bring these cameras to basketball or football games where security will not allow "professional" cameras. I use to use an Olympus Stylus 1 which had a good balance of size, zoom (28-300), and fixed aperture 2.8. Are there other cameras I should consider other than Sony RX100 vii?
I wish companies would make these again. I buy cheap $200 phones, never the $1k+ flagships that finally have serviceable image quality, so I need a real dedicated compact camera. I love these because I get to leave the stresses of my phone behind and not my photography. No distractions. Plus: 🔹Lossless quality optical zoom 🔎 🔹Flip screen so you can see yourself and use the best lens at the same time ✌️ 🔹Built-in ND for video exposure 😎 🔹A nice big 1" sensor for great pocketable IQ and DR. ✨ 🔹Dedicated ergonomics built for purpose and custom modes to ensure fast tactile operation which at times can be set while powered down ⚡ 🔹It doesn't waste my phone battery or storage while shooting 🔋 🔹It doesn't need to be updated every year for another $1k because they killed the battery life and RAM with updates. 💵 🔹It looks touristy so I'm less likely to creep people out taking photos of them on a compact than with my phone. 😊 I checked out the Xiaomi 14 1" sensor with the shutter button module, but it costs more than my GRIII for way less camera. Personally, I'd rather spend more to get more camera, and watch TH-cam on a cheapo Samsung.
I wish they would update it to a bigger sensor, perhaps APS-C, but keep it small and inconspicuous. The so-called 1" sensor is very small. Sensors marketed as "1-inch" measure only 0.52″ X 0.35″. For non-Americans, that is 13.2 x 8.8mm :) The image area (116 mm2) is about 3 times smaller than the APS-C
I'd rather buy a RX100 VIII than a Sony FF camera, that is for sure! My wife's ZV-1 is one tiny photo mean machine, wonder what a updated RX100 would be like.
Yes - Genesis final tour was a must - no just stills - yes did have issues at the O2 in London who ban based on “zoom” what mad they would have to take Samsung phones of people - I just stated the actual mm (72mm) not the 35mm equivalent (200mm) - no issues (always carry spare battery)
I've wanted one of these so long, just for concerts where I don't have a photo pass. But I feel like I wouldn't use it for much else. If I want the best photos, I'll bring my mirrorless. If I want to be as light as possible, my iPhone does just fine.
I totally agree on your advice. In my dozens' of trips to Japan in the last 10+ years, I always carry a RX100 (version 1, 3 and 7 depending on the years that they were lanuched). During my trips, my backpack was heavy because it was packed with many travel related stuffs other than the cameras. In many occasions, I was so lazy to take my APSC or FF camera out from my backpack that I just shoot the scene using the RX100. The image quality of the photos from the RX100 was good enough, although still noticeably not as good as the APSC or FF cameras if compared side by side. In my recent trips, the numbers of photos that I took by the RX100 were more that the photos taken by the APSC or FF cameras.
My RX100V (consciously chosen over VII for the focal length and used price) is showing its age but comes in clutch when I do not want to bring out my main A7 body for casual photos. Smaller body means I can also switch to a smaller/lighter bag.
Too bad it is not available to buy anywhere. I recently passed on my RX100M2. I have taken a lot of good photos with it, but when I tried it out, I couldn't believe how much better my phone photos were.
I just had surgery and was told that I wouldn't be able to lift more than 2kgs for the first 6 weeks (and that's with both hands) and then no more than 5kgs for the following 6 weeks! Rather than put my business on hold, I got myself a Fujifilm X-T5 (meets the weight requirements - just) and I'm loving it. Yes, we're definitely getting old though!
Canon uses older versions of the sensors. The current ones use the same as RX100 Mark IV. Canon does have faster lenses but they go to only 100 mm and 120 mm. Sony does have the VA model which is faster but goes only up to 70 mm. Sony has high frame rate video modes that Canon does not have and fast electronic shutters. So if you are interested in fast action stuff, then Sony is the way to go. To normal photography Canon may be better. Panasonic has two models, one is f/1.4 at the wide angle but slows fast when zoomed and it is old. Another is a super zoom up to 360 mm but again much slower
Nice camera, but I doubt camera choices make that much of a difference. Exercise, do some mobility work, lift relatively heavy weights 2-3x a week and stretch…the latter I often leave out and that’s when my back gets sore. I’m approaching 70. Still, a nice camera! I like mine, but would be very tempted by the older V as well…faster lens, but less zoom.
Hey Jason, what would be a decent price to purchase the rx100 vii used? I’ve seen them go for 1100 on ebay used and it doesn’t feel right paying that much for a used 5 year old camera.
I fear that Sony has abandoned the RX 100. Pretty much impossible to find new. I wish they would make a statement indicating if they plan to make more or if it's discontinued. Used are getting rare as well, at least where I live
Brooo I just did a wedding with a 35-150mm lens and my arms were like spaghetti! For travelling I’ll need something else and this is really really interesting
A large portion of the photos on my wall came from an RX100 and not an ILC. Especially from concerts and photos of loved ones - it’s unimposing and people are at ease around it. I found my Mk. V locally for about 300. 🤯
It's indeed an amazing camera, but the lack of ND is a huge issue for shooting videos on a sunny day, and solutions to add external NDs are really inelegant to say the least. Also, the battery life is awful, I usually need to pack 5 batteries for a day's shoot and almost always have to recharge all of them during the night. You are absolutely right that they a just one version away from perfection, but all the years of waiting has made me accept that maybe Sony has lost interest in the rx100 line and there probably won't be a viii.
Yeah I wish they left the ND in the m7... Batteries ehhh they are so stick thin so I can understand why videos will kill it quickly. I personally always carry 5-6 like you but I'm always all for better battery life.
I personally use a Sony RX100 VII. In terms of portability, I admit that the RX100 VII does not perform well in low light conditions, such as indoors, compared to full frame cameras (I compare it to my other Sony A7C II). I think the reason Sony has not yet produced a new model may be because Sony prefers to produce things that make more money and are more appealing to the general public, such as selling new lenses that make more money.
With modern "AI" noise reduction software, these pocket cams (especially the 1" cams) go way further than they did when released 5-15 yrs ago. It's not even that crazy to shoot good 1/1.7 chips now that ISO 1600 is actually salvageable in LR.
If you can manage to pick one up, I highly recommend it! Check your local camera stores or shop used from BH, Amazon, Best Buy, KEH, MBP, etc!

Oh snaps! The legendary Dogen! Yes it was Victor! we took a road trip together to photograph the castle in the sky but as you can see, it was just a castle in the mountains 😭
@@JasonVong still amazing! love your content dude!
I'd like to see this camera with an APS-C sensor inside.
That ending... poor Viv :))
loved my RX100 iv, and made tons of content using that because of its capability and pocket-friendly size.
All fits easily in a mini sling bag.
interested in why you got the M6 but not the M7
VI was a lot cheaper on the used market and my main use will be for the zoom ability on my trip. Otherwise I’ll be using the Fuji xe4 with the 18-55 lens or the 27mm 2.8 lens. Thanks for your wonderful video!
Vong! Thank you for video RX100 series. Please make videos more often about the Sony RX100 series.
Plus:
🔹Lossless quality optical zoom 🔎
🔹Flip screen so you can see yourself and use the best lens at the same time ✌️
🔹Built-in ND for video exposure 😎
🔹A nice big 1" sensor for great pocketable IQ and DR. ✨
🔹Dedicated ergonomics built for purpose and custom modes to ensure fast tactile operation which at times can be set while powered down ⚡
🔹It doesn't waste my phone battery or storage while shooting 🔋
🔹It doesn't need to be updated every year for another $1k because they killed the battery life and RAM with updates. 💵
🔹It looks touristy so I'm less likely to creep people out taking photos of them on a compact than with my phone. 😊
I checked out the Xiaomi 14 1" sensor with the shutter button module, but it costs more than my GRIII for way less camera. Personally, I'd rather spend more to get more camera, and watch TH-cam on a cheapo Samsung.
I'm more amazed that you actually formatted a TH-cam comment like a word doc 🤯
@@JasonVong I just want to be easy to read. And I find emojis cute. 😂
It’s been 5 years since the release of it! I hope this video is a foreshadowing for the mark 8!
“This is an oldie but a goodie…..well-e… an oldie where I come from.” Great video
“Looks like you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.”
@@JasonVong YES!! 😉Maybe I will see you at NAB?
@@PaulFeinbergsadly no 😭 have fun !
@@JasonVong boooo! Seems like this year will be pretty fun
I don't have the VII but I do have the V and I love the built-in ND filter... just not a lot of zoom but I'm happy with this one.
That's the thing, where is the 10bit 422 1 inch new SONY RX100m8 or the LUMIX LX10m2?
I've wanted one of these so long, just for concerts where I don't have a photo pass. But I feel like I wouldn't use it for much else. If I want the best photos, I'll bring my mirrorless. If I want to be as light as possible, my iPhone does just fine.
I also use some tape to help open the screen while in cage.
You should be an anchor
So entertaining
There on backorder at Bestbuy ( thats where I like to buy), do you think new model replacement is brewing?😮
Do they get alot of dust in the lens, ? i got a lumix compact 3 years ago it end up in the garbage.
Hum... I'm curious. How does the RX100 compares with Panasonic and Canon 1" competitor cameras? Is the quality really better? Significantly so?
at least for Lumix, the video autofocus shall be much better, as Panasonic didn't use PDAF for a long time.
@@okaro6595I thought the newer canon ones had the stacked 1” sensor in them… also the 100 and the 120 are at 2.8.
I'm expecting the viii by end of the year, here's to hoping
As always, great video! I’ve been wanting one for YEARS but they’re so expensive. I’d rather buy a lens lol
I just got back from a hike where I carried my RX100v7 and a Smallrig cage.
£900 new with cashback in June (UK) - was thinking of the a6700 with sigma 18-50, but ended up going for tiny form factor instead
Great video. Thanks!
3:04 yes please 🙏

Waiting for rx100m8
Hey Jason, what would be a decent price to purchase the rx100 vii used? I’ve seen them go for 1100 on ebay used and it doesn’t feel right paying that much for a used 5 year old camera.
Hello, do you use 4K or HD for videos?
Hey @JasonVong have you ever used the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200D?
There is still a high demand for it
I fear that Sony has abandoned the RX 100.
a heckin deal!
I was recently at an event and wish I had this camera. The zv-1 ii just did not have the reach!
A range to 200mm (& small aperture) may seem useful, but is simplysilly on such a small camera.
I have a RX100IV that's getting rusty but that 5yo VII crap is too expensive to upgrade, come on Sony you just have to release a VIII and I'll buy it!
I would imagine if they did an VIII that it would be just as expensive though 🫣
@@JasonVong I'm more keen to spend 1200$ on a brand new VIII rather than a 5yo VII 😅
RX100 👍 we have one each ~ a Mk VIII would be nice
Waiting for its update with usb-c charging and weather sealing🥹
Sony should release RX100M8, not ZV-1M3
I sold mine as it was far too small and so expensive I was too worried about dropping it,
Jokes had me laughing a well deserved thumbs up lol
Where did you buy the etui for the sony rx100 VII?
Seems you can't find any for sale now.
I shot wedding with a rx100 when my full frame gear went down. The results shocked me
With modern "AI" noise reduction software, these pocket cams (especially the 1" cams) go way further than they did when released 5-15 yrs ago. It's not even that crazy to shoot good 1/1.7 chips now that ISO 1600 is actually salvageable in LR.
No thanks, my m43 does all that and is also light weight. Plus if you want to do some serious shooting, you can always change to a pro lens.
