  • In this video I talk a bit about the superstition behind renaming a boat and then go through the renaming ceremony required to rename a boat a register the new name with the Ledger of the Deep. Finally then I go through the physical application of the letters to the hull.

Stu, good job! we did our boat renaming with the boat in the water; cruised out to an island that was meaningful to the family, had a couple family members on board. It must be a commonly known ceremony because we did i think essentially the same speech and pouring the bottle east/west, etc though in our case it was champagne. It can't hurt to try to keep Poseidon and Neptune happy. Renko is looking great, i can't wait to see the engine dropped back in and hear it running...

Great video. One easy way to find the center of your graphic is to fold in half, lining up your end letters and make a crease. That way you get center and a straight line to use as a guide in lining up.

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think putting a sharp crease in the transfer lettering is a good idea, that's why they come gently rolled in a tube, to prevent creasing. I reckon the transfer would lift and crack & peel at any crease. Better to measure, tape it in place & stand back & take a look as they did.

Long story about our experience changing a boat's name. Back in 1973 my father bought a steel hull 30 foot launch. I can't remember the original name but he changed it to Sea Cow and it underwent extensive refurb. Once finally completed after god knows how long (I was nine at the time) it was moored over the road from our place in Perth on the Swan. My mother and I rowed out to load the fridge for our first weekend away on the thing. I recall we were headed to Rottnest with some friends. Some time later that day it....exploded. The superstructure is still orbiting one of Pluto's moons. As best as can be explained, "they" think the gas fridge had a leak and the hull slowly built up with gas, to be ignited by something, static, a pilot light. Not sure. The explosion was hard half way around Perth. It even ended up on the front page of the Daily News. A fireman narrowly avoided serious injury as they went out to try and haul it to shore and he decided to hit the hull with his axe to sink it. Of course the hull was steel and the axe came back at might great speed and narrowly missed his head.

Another reason I heard for the superstition involved in renaming a boat, is that the name was carved deeply into the Transom, on wooden sailing ships, to purposefully make it difficult to rename. If the boat was stolen it was a lot of work to cut the transom out, and replacing it and significantly weakened the boat in doing so.

You can draw a centre line on the top of the aplication paper for reference ,using the letters to find center, once you are happy with location ,hinge the top of the decal with one long piece of tape ,pin the bottom with two tabs of tape to stop it blowing about , when applying letters take a sharp stanley and cut the tabs at the bottom to release the decal but dont remove it they are now refrences , then start at one end cut vertically from top (but start under your tape hinge) down between letters , flip that letter upside down on the hinge ,remove the backing paper ,lower the letter line the aplication paper up again , squeegy the one letter , move to the next letter repeat . then remove application paper , simple.

  • @busboy262

I wish that you would have for advice prior to applying the lettering. But it does look good.
    1. Draw a straight line at the base of the lettering on the application paper. Keep in mind that some letters and fonts will fall below. Eye this well as it's a base for all to follow.
2.easure the entire layout of the belt. To draw another vertical center line. Keep in mind that letters may be different widths. The center of a 5 letter layout might not be the center of the center letter. Again....important.
    3. Snap a chalkline for the vertical center. Keep it a light application of chalk. Chalkline is best for all because they are going to absolutely straight and you can extend this straight line out. The longer - the better to view it.
    4. Snap any additional horizontal chalklines for your layout.
    5. You now have an absolute basis for everything. Tape the decal down and view it. Adjust it from your benchmarks.
    6. When you apply the decal, don't get hung up on fractions of an inch/mm. Your lines are good on everything. Just carefully peel the entire backing off the decal away from the surface. 1 person at each end can light attach the decal using the reference lines at each end and at the center. Treat each letter as an individual decal and squeegie each from the center outward.
Just one other thing when laying it out. Again.... don't get hung up on mm's. Use major points of reference on the subject. It will be THOSE that dictate how people view your layout. For instance: On a bus, the center of the side might not be between the front and rear bumper. Your front point of reference might be a door.
Hope that helps anybody else. I've done countless trucks. Boats or even buildings follow these rules.
Edit: Prep: While you were ok with how you prepped, you should use a prepsol to remove any wax for older surfaces. Finish with denatured acohol before application to remove and remaining dirt or skin oils left from laying lines.

USS Phoenix survived Pearl Harbour, and was later renamed 'General Belgrano' on passing to Argentina. It was sunk by a British torpedo, however this was 30 years later and nearly 50 years from the ship's first launch. So good and bad luck both in there, I suppose.

Nice job on the decals. On trick I learned was when your pulling off the paper use the non scraping straight edge to hold the paper as your pulling it off following that edge as it comes off keeps the vinyl from lifting or tearing.
P.s. did you give an offering of Earth Wind and Fire? Bad ju ju if you didn’t

Great video! Question: What do you do if the boat had a name and you don't know what it was? The name of the boat that we're restoring was on the transom but was sanded off and we can't find it anywhere in the paperwork or on the hull. Thank you for bringing us along and we'll see ya in the next one

Hey DangarStu, a bit of trivia for you. Renko Charts are used to track price movements on stock exchanges. The name Renko is derived from the Japanese word 'Renga' which means... a brick!
Your vessel will henceforth be known 'The Brick' on Dangar Island.
    Cheers, DangarDave.

I think thats a fantastic name. I can’t say I by into the superstition of bad luck renaming a boat. I have personally renamed 5 boats in my lifetime and they have all been good no issues. Or at least non I attribute to bad luck!

    Interesting fact.
On June 7th 1958 the USS Enterprise had it's christening and launch. It was renamed the Edmond Fitzgerald November 8 1975 and sank two days later on November 10th during a storm on lake Superior killing the entire crew of 29. It was later discovered the protocol in which to change the name was not followed properly. James T Kirk now owns the rights to the previous name USS Enterprise and legend has it that he still boldly goes where no man has gone before.
