- Considering renaming your boat? Well, I'm sure you have heard that it is bad luck to rename a boat without first paying homage to the gods of the sea. So, before setting off to sea with a newly named boat, be sure to conduct a renaming ceremony. What is the renaming ceremony? This video gives you one example of how to conduct the renaming ceremony. Some of the most important things to remember, never display the new name for the gods to see before your vessel has been blessed. Always have plenty of Champaign for the gods and your guests. And have fun!

I have renamed two of my recently purchased ships. The first was "Hei-Jo", renamed "Henry Clay", in honor of m y deceased grandfather, "Henry Clay Greer" (1995). He was a veteran Captain on the Great Lakes, and retired on Lake Erie. I know he would have been proud and honored to have my first motor yacht named after him.. The second was a motor yacht I purchased to replace an older SeaRay yacht. We changed the name of that one to "Kokomo". Named after the Beach Boy song, which states: Everyone needs a place like Kokomo, to get away from it all.. And so we have such a place now.! Kokomo is also on Lake Erie, and not far from where my grandfather retired, and passed away.. To the point, yes.. We did the renaming ceremony of both of these boats.! Did it make a difference.? Not as much as some better maintenance by the previous owner(s) might have...! Not saying the boats were a mess, but yes we have had a few things to fix in the last couple years.! As we are preparing to set off on the American Great Loop in the next couple years, there are always things to repair, new electronics to install, and all the little things that are part of making a boat, our home.. However the renaming in our case, was done with much more sincerity, and respect to the sea gods.. That being said, I believe that none of them have power or rule, over the "One GOD", whom I serve with all my heart and soul.. May GOD bless your vessel, and give you safe passage..

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I agree with you one hundred percent. The renaming ceremony is for fun and to satisfy superstition; just like explaining your engine issues on the wife for insisting on bring those damn bananas on your last cruise. LOL

currently looking into buying my own boat, gonna look for a good sailboat under 30ft but over 20. i have big ideas for the boat, hopefully i either like the name or the ceremony goes off without a hitch lol
Good luck in your search. Be patient! There is a bunch of boats to stay away from, so do your research and due diligence (survey, sea trial and personal inspection) before signing on the papers. You don't want a big hole in the water you through cash into. Be aware that the market remains hot and waiting around may cost you the boat that right for you.
The last christening ceremony I attended was hilarious. Well, until the speaker and microphone we used got knocked into the lake. It threw a breaker on the dock and nobody had a key to the box. Drunks.
It all about having fun and paying homage to traditions.
