Diamond DA62 IFR | Sydney to Canberra | Where's the runway?!?

  • Flying IFR from Sydney (Bankstown) to Canberra in my Diamond DA62. It was difficult to find the runway at Canberra after being given a visual approach due to the rain and decreasing visibility. I had to be vectored onto a right base because I was unable to visually sight the runway. Discussing Fuel Over Destination (FOD) and common miscalculations. Using satellite weather with the GSR56 and Iridium datalink. The problem with relying on 4G connections for weather radar information on iPad. Setting up for the Bankstown 9 SID, Canberra Bungo 5A STAR and Ray 35 ILS approach... only then to change plans. Landing in strong crosswind and a Severe Turbulence SIGMET. Using ForeFlight in Australia. General Aviation in Australia.

    Is it just me or does anyone else find flying videos calming and relaxing? I also love the mic voices between pilot and ATC

    Great work Steve. Beautiful machine, looks perfectly suited to your mission purpose. Love your methodical thinking and aways staying well ahead of the aircraft. Videos are top quality as well. In my experience it’s always harder than you think it’s going to be to capture quality video and audio in aircraft. Cheers, Mark (YMMB)

      Thanks Mark. Yes the cameras always overheat or switch off for some random reason adding to the challenge!

    Can happen and has happened to all of us Steve. Flown into Canberra many times, especially in the late 90's, If visual in marginal conditions I always looked for Lake Burley Griffin and I knew the AP was due east of that. What was hard in the past was my 3 year contract in the outback mainly night runs. Cheers mate keep up the good work.

    Really enjoyed that one Steve. It was great to see how you handled all the challenges in this flight - pressure of a weather change, passengers, a choice between a possibly iffy visual approach and delayed ILS, a challenge seeing the runway (CB is difficult, especially in poor viz), directed to less than ideal parking (CB needs to do much, much better in GA parking).

    • @diamondairtaxis
      @diamondairtaxis  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great feedback, with lots of good observations. Yes it was very difficult to see on that day! And yes the parking at CB is always very limited… not ideal

    I flew VFR into Canberra late last year and also had a bit of trouble spotting it (on a clear day!)... I think Canberra ATC know that and I can almost imagine them looking at each other knowingly when they ask if you have the field in sight ;-)

      Yes weather is not great in Sydney but maybe they could fly IFR to Bathurst (or somewhere else where the weather is VFR) and let you fly there.

    20,000 feet ceiling but what's the most efficient altitude to fly at, fuel and/or speed wise?

    • @diamondairtaxis
      @diamondairtaxis  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It all depends… without wind, generally best performance is around 14,000 feet due to the turbos. You still get pretty much max continuous power until around 14000 so you will see a TAS of around 192kts+

      @@diamondairtaxis That's pretty good! = 350km/hr which is faster than a bullet train and 2/3rds to 3/4ths the speed of a commercial airliner.

    Hi Steve, just wondering why the tower gave you the clearance at the holding point and not the run up bay? (I haven’t done a departure into class C from Bankstown yet, but this seems different to what I’ve read).

    • @willwood1910
      @willwood1910 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      been fairly common at bankstown since the third runway (11L/29R) opened back up, pretty sure its usually just dependent on how busy the airport is because ive been cleared direct to the holding point doing both CTA and OCTA departures.

    • @diamondairtaxis
      @diamondairtaxis  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Normally you receive the clearance in the run up bay, however in the 62 I skip the bay and taxi straight to the holding point so I either get it mid taxi or at the holding point

    G,day Steve from Sydney.
    The approach RWY30 could you not make visual because of visibility or was the planes nose limiting?

    • @diamondairtaxis
      @diamondairtaxis  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Showers were reducing visibility where the runway was. It is also a bit harder to see out of the twins than say a DA40 with the big bubble canopy

  • @MrSeebsy

    why did Canberra controllers give you a visual if 1, you were on an IFR plan & 2, They knew the weather was very marginal?
