Earth Walls! Woodland Bushcraft Project with TA OUTDOORS using basic hand tools - Roundhouse Ep.7

  • We built woodland 'cob' walls on the roundhouse using a mixture of clay, wood ash, straw, and water. The mix was applied to the outer woven hazel hurdle walls. We aim to add another layer to the outside as well as the inside walls before continuing with the build by adding thatch to the roof. Mike's dog Jaxx joined us for the dag and loved chasing and 'sniffing' Amber.

I think you and Mike should make some clays pots for the Celtic house. Maybe something big enough to collect water run off once you’ve done the roof

Celtic pottery, horns, beads, clay faces of the Celtic Gods using Dear horns. Since you two go to these festivals you can sell the them as commemorative decorative mementos or put them up for auction at a private Celtic auction war between you and Mike.

For the camp you can make cooking pots, drinking cups, plates, tea pot... you can also do things like paw prints/handprints for long term decorations at home.
As for the process of forming it into usable items, check out spiral clay pottery. You don’t need a potters wheel.

Great video, it's funny mentioned the clay oven, I literally just left a comment on Mike's channel suggesting you gents make some clay projects like the clay oven you mentioned. Also, there's loads of videos on how to make kilns, furnaces, chimnies, bushcraft roofing tiles, and general pottery and dishes as well as "Bushcraft Tools" like utensils, bricks, and other stuff. Clay is AMAZING and has infinite possibilities. Also, make you a wood paddle or fashion you a sort of rolling pin as you add more layers so you can give it a smoother and more even surface layer and save your hands and arms.

I loved this. Informative and fun! Perhaps you could construct a clay oven or kiln, then use it to bake bread or produce pottery. So many things you could do! Also, I agree that adding sand might help. Moss is a good alternative to straw as well. I guess it depends on whether either of those materials are available nearby.

Very nice. As far as a suggestion, I guess some way for the people who would have lived in a round house to have kept warm. I don't know, but considering economy of labor they would have made an oven, stove, fireplace combination, one for inside and one for outside depending on the season and weather.

I think if you added sand into your clay mix, it wouldn't crack. My soil is mostly sand and I've never had desiccation cracks when I'm building. It's the same with pottery, to avoid cracking when drying and firing you include either sand or 'grog' which is smashed fired pottery. Though of course you probably don't have any sand just laying about, local resources and all that. I'm extremely jealous of the clay availability you guys have but also just because you aren't doing it on your own. Everyone around me thinks I'm mad for playing with mud.

  • @oMusic93
    @oMusic93 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi guys, first up if you would have done in and outside of the Wall at the same time anf added a little more water to your mixture and maybe more dust from the fireplace the Walls would hold bettet because the clay can bind more easy while it's moist.
Next thing is, why don't you make your own brick? You do have loads of clay and you can get dust from your fireplace with ease. You now just need to creat a "baking" form. It by than would also be easier to build a quiln and keep it sustainable.
Btw. the dust helps binding and drying the clay espacially when it rains. It also makes it more heat resistent (less cracking).

I saw you were interested in doing a season on cooking on a camp fire from a recent live show. I thought it was a great idea but not sure if you decided to go ahead or not.
Anyway, here’s an idea - take the venerable Ken Hom’s recipe for Chinese Crispy duck and modify it to do on a camp fire. I’ve cooked it many times (even once for a top Czech chef in Prague) and it really is exceptionally good. It’s a meal that looks, feels, smells and tastes like it took a top chef to make but its actually pretty easy to do. I think it would showcase your culinary skills if you can pull it off on a camp fire.
However, it will take a little ingenuity on your part because you’d have to do it without an oven
    a) The initial roasting, to get the brown crispy skin, needs an oven temp of around 220-240 degrees for 20-30 minutes before you take the temperature down again to roast like a chicken at about 180c
    b) Roasting duck creates a LOT of duck fat, which would catch fire on your open fire/embers. I know this having had the Prague fire brigade turn up at my apartment during a party due to the smoke setting off the building’s fire alarms. No actual fire but a lot of smoke…
    c) There is a bit of prep beforehand to cover the duck with a glaze, which then has to dry, making the raw duck skin like parchment
The challenge, then, is how to roast the duck hot enough whilst diverting the rendered fat away from the fire but if you can devise a fan to turn a lamb roast hanging vertically next to a fire, I’m sure you can devise something 😊
I think it would make for great entertainment if you can pull it off, or even if it goes wrong (everything catches fire).
I’ll just give you the basic recipe below but you should Google Ken Hom and Crispy Duck to get the original recipe.
Glaze - prepared the day before cooking the duck
Honey, Dark Soy Sauce (Kikoman is good), half a sliced lemon. Boil it up for 10-15 minutes until it’s reduced a bit and sticky. You paint this all over the duck skin and then hang it up to let it dry somewhere cool overnight. It’ll drip, so put something underneath. When it’s dry, the skin feels dry, tight and a bit like parchment to the touch and it’s ready to roast. This is what will make it turn dark brown and crispy and give the skin that amazing flavour.
One duck is just about enough for two people. Make more of everything than you'd expect because it's so good, every scrap gets eaten and the sauce will go first, then the carcass will be picked clean.
    Salad/Veg - fresh
Spring onions and cucumber, shredded into long thin strips. Will go into the wraps alongside the shredded duck meat
    Wraps
Ken Hom used incredibly thin, home-made sesame oil Chinese Pancakes for wraps which are really hard to make. You can buy them frozen from Chinese supermarkets but they’re still a faff and very delicate. Tesco mini wraps do just as well if you’re in the woods or just a bit clumsy. Just warm them up a bit so they stay flexible.
    Sauce
Trust me on this. The best/most expensive plum jam you can buy, some hoi-sin sauce and fresh lemon juice. Mix to taste. You’ll spread/drizzle this into the wraps.
    The Duck
The tricky part. How to roast it hot enough at first to get a great crispy skin without the whole fire-pit and duck setting alight? Then cook at normal temp until it’s cooked through.
    Assembly
Once the duck is done, cut the crispy skin off into small strips and make a pile. They are the best bits. Once tasted, even your best friends and probably even your girlfriend will fight you for them.
Take off the breasts and use two forks to shred the meat. Be brutal and pile it up next to the skin, wraps, veg and sauce. You can do the same with the leg meat but the smells and sights will be driving everyone to distraction, so I suggest you do the legs after the breast meat has gone.
Then show your guests how to construct your wrap with skin, meat, veg and sauce. Roll it up and taste heaven. Don’t skimp on the sauce.
If you can do this on a camp fire and get your follower’s to do it for themselves, their girlfriends will think they are Gods.
I hope you do go for a cooking themed series. I’ve enjoyed all the ones you’ve done so far and I think you may have an as yet unexplored niche.
Either way, good luck and can’t wait to see you mixing manure with the clay for the inside roundhouse build!
