Viking Bushcraft Shelter Build in 4 Days - Full Build | Vikings

  • We build a viking bushcraft shelter in 4 days based on traditional Icelandic viking houses which were built from turf and sod. This camp is built slightly different, where we didn't use stone and turf for the walls, we built a timber frame construction in the shape of an a-frame where the rafters on one side go all the way down to the floor. This gives much more room inside the shelter. We used woven sticks in the form of "hazel hurdles" as a base to put the turf and moss on top. We finished off the walls with more woven sticks known as wattle. Thanks for watching!

Here is a short version of the Viking Turf Roof Shelter Build! With lots of people still in some form of lockdown I thought I would give you an extra video this week. Stay tuned this Friday 6PM GMT for the next episode of the Celtic Roundhouse series! Cheers! - Mike

I had to subscribe my guy. You have some very cool videos and you have a very friendly humble personality that makes me think if i knew you I would want to be buddies and build this stuff with you. You have good skills and good presentation. Just watched the video that mentioned your child being born. I hope you are loving this time with them and that all is well. Keep up the good work.

I only found this channel a week ago and have been watching most of the builds so far. And I'm getting the impression that this guy really loves nature and working with it and in it. So, delighted as I was that he replanted the seedling, I was not surprised. What a lovely person! I wish he'd tell us his baby daughter's name...

I always love your videos! Especially the historical ones since I'm a huge history buff. Just a word of advice though, the vikings/icelanders would place birch bark down first before the turf so the rain won't seep through the rafters, given that there's no birch trees though I see why that was passed on. I am curious to see how efficient this roof, without the birch bark, is at shielding from water.

i would build the bed a bit different. first wider and longer for comfort . a poor sleep leads to an unproductive next day . second the vertical posts that you sawed off i would leave them . i would get some heavy fabric and sew it into a mattress case . i would fill the case with evergreen tips wood shavings grass and other material mixed and packed or bring in a real mattress that someone set out at the bin . then put a tarp over it and the vertical posts could hold it in place .
third i would mosdef have the bed much higher at least two feet or even three so as to save my knees and back getting up . i do like the roof it is very nicely sorted , mine would be cedar and probably honeysuckle shrub for the wattle maybe a cotton painters dropcloth for the roof then layer some dirt mixed with live wild rose canes and twigs to hold it together then sprinkle grass seed over it as there is no turf grass nearby . mine is in a stand of young cedars so a big tree falling on it is no worries that i might have in built in a deciduous area .
i mix old fire cinders in with the dirt in the perimeter support posts and toss in an inch or two of mixed soil and pack it so moisture doesn't migrate and rot the base . i have notched a few cedars and bent them over and across the roof to make it less visible to airplane pilots flying low overhead .
the west and north side are the most exposed to a firelight or smoke being seen so a long dakota firepit that runs under the floor for radiant floor heating . i was able to . . procure ha ha . . some old ceramic 6'' inside pipes that have a bell on one end to fit together and there is a T on the chimney end for a stack . i covered the pipe with about an inch of dirty sand then i got some blue clay creek bottom mud and laid some flat rocks for a floor in the middle over the pipe . at the end of the pipe where the T comes up i used a ten foot section of aluminum house downspout and i made it slant away from the structure and set a cedar post and wired the downspout to that post for stability and aeration and safety third .
my wattle roof is about two feet beyond the walls because i plant to set more perimeter posts and wattle about a foot beyond the current wall and back fill the space with leaves twigs wood shavings bark and such for insulation and then maybe a third wattle wall as a protective layer and coat it with 50 % clay and 10 % wood ashes . i mix1 part shredded straw with 1 part wood ash to 5 parts clay and make bricks that i fire as per primitive guy on you tub for an oven

Very informative building video. I have to keep in mind that this is traditional old school hand tool building. Just quick questions like why not raise a platform bed for sleeping off the ground? Are you planning on adding a fire source for heat? It seems the height would have been better about a foot taller for standing room. I have generally used tarps for quick shelters so I am curious. Last but not least, would it not be easier just to bring a chain saw? I know I'll get comments about that last one but it seems that if we have the advantage of modern tools, then why not use a few? I know a lot of people will shudder at that for not being hard core old school, but that's a lot of sawing by hand. Great videos and I admire your skills.
