Seeing that post hole digger brought back memories of my youth while living on our family farm in Southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. (I live in the UK now, since May 6, 2003) I became familiar with the use of it when I was as young as 12 when my Dad (❤️ R.I.P.) decided to install electrified fencing around our 50 hectares to keep the cattle from escaping. It was hard work using that post hole digger which left my hands with callouses but after seeing the last fence post go in I felt elated and from that day on had a sense of adult responsibility which made me feel more mature about myself. 👍🙂
So, that's what haggis is, tatties, and neepss are. Learned something new, this vid. By the way, the reason lungs from beef, and pork are illegal, state-side, is the potential for exposure to TB. I'm not sure if lung from goat is also illegal, or not. Goats are immune to TB, or at least highly resistant to it. I think I'd have used a cot to get up off the ground, but you seemed to do just fine, anyway. Another way to improve insulation would be to setup an inner layer of foil blankets, about an inch or two from the outer layer. This traps a layer of air in between, and that has R value. The additional blanket layer adds yet another R value. Thanks for the video. :)
@@KentSurvival hey mate love your channel weird question but how do you wash your knife after cutting the meat and your hands do you have hand sanitizer?
I think you should isolate the bottom zone. Thus, the heat generated inside would be reflected from the blankets and warm you much better. But I think you couldn't make a comfortable camp because of the cold coming from outside because you didn't insulate the bottom well. It was still a good adventure, I hope you enjoy it a lot. 👍 Cheers from Turkey 🎉🎊😄
It was a very creative shelter, but having the mylar wrap under the edges would help a lot! All that heat up top isn’t helpful if the ground is cold, it will only raw more cold air in.
I am impressed, I would not even think of having a diner that takes 2,5 hours to make when camping. I would not even dream of having such a large shelter because of heating problems but it must have been good to be able to stand in it.

In the future, before you put things inside a shelter you can also sweep the leafs on the ground on the inside up against the wall to provide added insulation. Combo that with what you did on the outside and it should work for a night or two
Brilliant stuff - fully haggised-up Scotsman here. I was thinking - could you have added an extra layer of the sheets which were about 2 feet beyond the bottom of the structure - like a skirt (or kilt😂) and put the logs on top of the overhanging bits thus completely sealing the ground level?
Such a wood chopping expert Wood here in AUS is so hard and never this easy to chop, it is to gratifying to see softer wood being so easy to craft carve up.
Andy if your going cold climate camping make a trench inside your hut about 2 foot x1 foot and 1 foot deep. The cold air will go to the lowest point ,being down into the trench.
I lived in various parts of Scotland for over sixteen years (Aberdeen, Dundee,Ullapool,Edinburgh) and have been back on Merseyside for over twenty years; one thing I miss is a Haggis supper, which you can’t get down here. Not the finest Haggis you’ll ever eat, but on cold night (not uncommon in Scotland) on the wobbly way home from the pub, hard to beat.
I like that shelter. If you had to have an emergency shelter and you had a thousand blankets and some super duper tape, I can see this happening. Now, regarding that Haggis...um...I don't think so. I'm in the US so I guess it's illegal here. Oh, what a shame! Oh well, more for you. I could manage the Twix and tea, if it's iced. I'm in the South so it's sweet, iced tea here. You are right about tea keeping things more civilized. Love your channel!
Thank you for being willing to talk on your video. I have watched others that just do stuff on their videos. It's fine but I enjoy getting to know the person that is doing the video a little bit.
Perhaps the best feature of the shelter was the way it gave you new ways to film light. You also captured some very sculptural wood and fungus. It would have taken more 'Neck Oil' for me to slide that haggis down my gullet.😉 I have been speculating on ways to 'improve' the shelter design. One way might be to de-stub some poles and wrap some part of the emergency panels around them to secure a base along most of the (uneven) ground. A raised bed would get you off the ground and out of the draft. Making a smaller shelter would be on my agenda! One of the useful parts about videos like yours is how they get the minds of viewers working in reaction to your experiences.
Thank you for mentioning the two trips. For ages I've been trying to figure out why I can't carry anywhere near as much as you do on my back - now I know that's not the case lol

Bit late with this comment but making your own haggis is pretty impressive..... haggis, neeps 'n' tatties are so underrated and completely delicious, and to make it all while out camping in a homemade space blanket house is mind boggling😮 I take my bunnet off to you good sir.😊😊😊.

@@ste.c9970 Exactly. I find it nauseating and distracting, it ruins what would otherwise be 5 star videos. He needs to work on his presentation if he is to progress the channel.
The only thing I can think of that you might want to carry along with your stoves is a sterling heat engine. One of those heat recirculation things that looks like a small desk fan but runs on heat. They can help with the recirculating of heat so it’s not all that drafty in the corners.
I'd been thinking about how well those things would go into making a larger shelter. This might turn into a fun activity for my younger students' outdoors sessions. Thank you for that, first of your videos I've watched and I'm straight in as a subscriber.
Thanks Andy! Nice to come home and relax to your amazing bushcraft content before the football starts later. Again will look forward to your next outing, stay safe 💯
A good tip with Haggis is to boil it for about 2 hours and just before serving and some vegetable oil to the water! does nothing for the tast just makes it easier to slide into the bin. As you might have guessed it is an aquired taste that has eluded me!
!!!!OMG...HILLARIOUS...kevin williams!!!! I laughed 'til I cried. 🙂 I'm of Scottish heritage...Campbell sir name...and I wouldn't feed Haggis to my dog. I tried it once...years ago. It took a week & a gallon of Listerine Mouthwash to get the God-awful taste out of my mouth. Best regards, Ben

Hi Andy. We've written a huge book on wild edible plants and trees. Been watching your channel probably a year now and thought you might like a copy. Let us know and we'll post you a freebie as reward for all the cold nights in the woods ! ✌️😁
I watched this video before and then it came up again and I didn’t remember it at first, but I enjoyed watching it again, because of the haggis tutorial. ❤
I like the reflective blanket idea and the Japanese stove is a keeper. I'm sure that if you do a longer term camp, that you would have an A-frame shelter with the reflective material over the top and have poles in place to negate the wind. Thanks for the ideas!
Interesting project...Yeah, If it had been windy and/or rainy you would have to have retreated inside that one piece emergency tent shelter and called it a night! You were very brave to have stood upon that wobbly chopping block with an axe in your hand! The see-thru Mylar feature was like having skylights.
I’m from the US and I can’t believe how brave you all are to eat all those organs lol! But what a great source of nutrients! I believe they found fungal spores, stomach acid and pollen that reaches the lungs so they banned it. But I would figure it would all be burned out. Who knows. I love watching your videos! Love from Arizona!
From Missouri, Just got back from Scotland and had Haggis about every other day. It is so dang good. You guys should definitely try it once for sure. Tastes nothing like is sounds.
Texas lady here but so fascinated with your videos. I camped a little bit a very, very long time ago but now just snug in my apartment enjoying your unique videos. Not sure about haggis but your videos are entertaining. :)
Man, you are so cool. I wish you some nice camping on some beatutiful place with a nice weather and some beauty who wil cook for you. And no mud. When I watch your vids I started to feel wet and cold all the time.
I had haggis once in Scotland and I liked it, but we can't seem to find it here in Texas. That was a very unique shelter also. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's because true haggis is illegal to make in the USA...something about the FDA banning the use of all animal lung meats for fear that during slaughter it becomes contaminated with phlegm or stomach acids
I know it's a test, but the cardboard shelter, with the tarp over top and these on the interior walls and roof would probably be very comfortable. I was at a "drive in" movie with my son at his elementary school, they would show movies on the basketball courts outside during the evening on a inflatable screen. The families would sit in camping chairs and the kids could make cars out of cardboard boxes. Along with my son, his mom and her fiance were there. Our son was cold so I got an emergency blanket out of my trunk. She asked me why I was wrapping him up like a burrito. Lol
cardboard is severly underrated, when my brother got divorced in late October he had nowhere else to go so the first night he slept on our couch but the next day cleaned out my 10x12 shed and went and got a couple rolls of insulation and enough cardboard sheets from a big box store as we get to make makeshift walls over the insulation until winter was over and it worked fine for him 4 months until spring when we could rip off one of the sides to extend it to build him a little kitchenette in it so all he had to come inside for was to use the bathroom and shower and then we dry walled and painted it, he had a cool little "bachelor pad" for a couple years so he could save up money to get him a place. I use it as a mancave/outside bar now.
Good to see you filling in the holes you made as otherwise some unsuspecting bunny could fall in and break their leg! Seeing the comments about aliens and reflective foil, the whole construction looks very high tech, I do consider you very brave to try these things out assuming they will work. The haggis was particularly impressive. You must have a good digestive system!

Bit late with this comment but making your own haggis is pretty impressive..... haggis, neeps 'n' tatties are so underrated and completely delicious, and to make it all while out camping in a homemade space blanket house is mind boggling😮 I take my bunnet off to you good sir.😊😊😊.
Don't forget Cock-a-leekie or Cullen Skink! I gotta get back to Scotland someday.
Great vid
Best part for me was the frame of the brilliant great idea with post digger and so forth
From scratch absolutely incredible, you worked so hard.
Thank you very much
Love your willingness to deal with discomfort for our entertainment and education. Thank you
Wow so cool different style of stuff you do makes a difference Well done Andy looking forward to seeing your next project
Thank you Samuel
His videos are so calming
The wife walks in and sees your setup and says,”Whelp! He should be able to tune in to every radio station in the region now with all that foil!” 🤣🤣🤣
Also when you started to process the wood for the stove I thought the wood was going to shot through the tent walls after all the work you did haha.
Love your videos here in SanDiego Cal
🤣 ironically, I had a radio and it wouldn't work inside
😂
Sorrento Valley, FTW!
“Whelp”? What’s a whelp?
probably you made yourselves a Faraday cage@@KentSurvival
Well done on the haggis , neeps and tatties , one of my fave dinners .
Hubby and I love this shelter. You out do yourself every video. Absolutely love your channel. The meals you make are outstanding
This guy is the sweetest man ever I love his laugh ❤
That's the first time I've ever seen a shelter made out of Mylar blankets. Quite ingenious!
So cool! Interesting to see the haggis made. In the Midlands we call that veg a turnip...one of my favourite veg! ;)
Great video, not only good to watch but educational.
Well done Andy
Andy, I can’t stop watching your channel and people learn so much from your videos keep up the good work….(I’ve even got my son watching your channel now) thanks 🙏 Andy
I’ve just had haggis, neeps and tatties for my dinner. It looked a whole lot more appetising when pre-made! Sometimes it’s better not to know what’s in it!
Like your videos, love how you try different things for camping so we know what works and what doesn't.
Andy is genuinely a nice guy i love his nervous laugh keep up the good work pal
It's not a nervous laugh, it's just a laugh
@N J its a nervous why else would he be laughing
Very enjoyable! Novel without being silly, but not taking himself too seriously. The haggis was a clever touch.
Thanks Andy! Nice to come home and relax to your amazing bushcraft content before the football starts later. Again will look forward to your next outing, stay safe 💯
Making the haggis in the woods; I've seen it all now!
I'm of Scottish heritage...Campbell sir name...and I wouldn't feed Haggis to my dog.
I tried it once...years ago. It took a week & a gallon of Listerine Mouthwash to get the
God-awful taste out of my mouth.
Best regards,
Ben
You are so chill and down to earth. It's mainly why I watch your vids. Keep em coming!
Cool video, Andy! Thanks for all you do!
My pleasure!
made your own haggis, outstanding, never seen this in a tent,FORT,before, hats off to you for that, brilliant that its your first time, i think i might of tried one at home first, impressive
you have such a soothing voice and comforting presence, ive found my new favorite bushcraft channel to obsess over.
Perfect!!! Just the right amount of talking. Truly magnificent. Well done mate!
Brave job with the wee haggis!! You’ve gone above and beyond what’s required!!!😂🎉
Cheers :) had to be done for the 1/4 Scotsman in me
Im loving the various items liek that cool portable stove/heater. Man, I want one of those!!! What a great idea using the emergency blankets as shelter. I love seeing the ways to use things for a little adventure.
Hi Andy. We've written a huge book on wild edible plants and trees. Been watching your channel probably a year now and thought you might like a copy. Let us know and we'll post you a freebie as reward for all the cold nights in the woods ! ✌️😁
Oh wow, thats amazing, thank you very much :D would you mind dropping me an email at kentsurvival@gmail.com when you get a chance? thank you.
I love your book and your channel.
😅 I love Andy Kent. He makes me wanna go camping even tho I loathe camping! I'd even help chop the wood.
This was seriously freaking genius!!
Thank you Heather :D
Love from Arizona!
also from southern AZ!!!
I’m from the US as well and I’d starve before I ate that.
@@leeowens8294I'm from the U.S. too and yeah I most definitely would be starving if this was on the menu. It looked good but I can't eat organs. 😊
Great shelter Andy, seemed so simple to put together
Man, you are so cool. I wish you some nice camping on some beatutiful place with a nice weather and some beauty who wil cook for you. And no mud. When I watch your vids I started to feel wet and cold all the time.
I'll bet Steve Wallis would absolutely LOVE this video!!
When Andy was put this up I thought of Steve’s attempt at a bubble wrap shelter!
I love this channel. You UK country boys are just darling!!!
Love from America,
SUBSCRIBED!!!!
Happy Wednesday Andy I got to complement the video the shelter looks amazing hope your staying warm during these cold days and nights 😀👍
Thank you :)
As always, bloody wonderful and so relaxing to watch. If ever you are on the fens around Wicken, Ely, you will be welcome to pitch up at the mill.
It would have to be home made. US doesn’t allow haggis to be imported into the country.
Fair play making haggis out in the wild. Scottish myself and don’t know many who make it at home 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It's like a Christmas wrapping nightmare, I mean, I hate wrapping small parcels. This is my ideal hell, with the lid off, hats off to you Andy
Haha, definitely
LOL!
