This is a great question and I think it has a big influence on things, because there was no "ageism" during the early 2020 hiring frenzy. It took a sudden turn in 2023 in my experience of spending a year looking and speaking to hundreds of others doing the same.
As someone who's approaching 50, I think people don't like being around or looking at people when they get old. And it only gets worse the older you get. I mean. Look at how we treat the elderly.
An older employee is considered high risk to the company. More likely to get hurt on the job requires more time off for doctor appointments and requires more money to start with.
Not true, I require less money than younger candidates. I didn't pay a million for my house, and its paid off. Older workers are cheaper. And I haven't been sick for 10 years (because I wear a mask). Oh, and all kids are out of the house. People 23-55, they are the expensive ones, because they have a mortgage, kids come home with diseases, and all the worries that lead to alcoholism. Everything you say is a stereotype, not based upon actual data, living situation varies widely. If people hire based upon age or looks, they are just plain idiots. And idiocy isn't an age thing, it's a function of brain size, work ethic, and how much you abuse yourself with drugs or alcohol.
They can hire 2 people for what you make at 50, your more likely to use your time off, you won't work sick, you go to the Dr when I'll. Most employers are self insured, your a expense to be cut at 50!
Being older than you I'll add there was a recession in '87 too. In 2008 I turned 55 so the last decade of my so-called highest earning years I often earned literally nothing. I took SS at age 62 because I absolutely had to, I fly to Mexico to go to the dentist and Medicare made a huge difference, one of the worst thing about being unemployed when I was in my 50s, no healthcare.
I'm in my 50s and looking for an entry-level job. I have been on several phone interviews, and filled out a lot of applications, but I still have a hard time getting hired. Every day, I wish I invested my money wisely in the past so I could just leave the rat race behind.
Tips: Make sure your resume / LinkedIn profile goes back no more than 15 years. Make sure you don't post a picture on LinkedIn. And I think getting a makeover and using Botox is unfortunately necessary to look younger. It's all about putting food on the table.
I work at home depot, and most of the new managers are people over 50 that are starting a second career from construction or real estate and even some that are from the medical field. They open 2 new home depots, and Costco's, in my area, and they did not have enough managers, so of course they promote it, people that are willing to move up and those are the people I'm talking about.
I work in retail and am very experienced. In my early 50s. I get laid off every 3 to 5 months. I need to wait maybe a month and then another company will pick me up. There is always a way out.
I was told that I wasn't qualified to operate equipment that I invented and manufactured. I live on royalties these days but sitting around doing nothing is no fun because I like to work and stay busy. I have a resume that most people would ice pick their grandmothers to have yet none of that matters because I'm 58. I was turned down for three positions this year that I could do with my eyes closed. On the bright side, I have two new products being released before the end of the year, and I'll probably make enough on that to coast through the rest of my life. But if it is this hard for me, then I can only imagine how hard it is for the average Joe/Jane. Keep strong. We'll get through this.

One thing is, if your over 50, your not going to be around that job for the next 20 years which is true for me. comes time to collect retirement social security, I'm out.
Thats not it, since few people stay at a job for 20 years, or even 10 years. The issue with older employees is costs: Higher healthcare premiums, and likely higher salaries. Companies will hire 50+ workers if they have some real value that will exceed labor costs: ie able to bring in more sales, or increase revenue 5X or more their salary. For professionals that have skills & over 50, they best way is to start a business (S-Corp,C-Corp). Companies are more likely to hire a contractor to do a job since its a simple Business to business transaction: No payroll\FICA, Healthcare, worker comp, etc.
How did they know your age? Were these in person interviews? You are a younger looking woman but the hair may kill it in an interview. You should be prime age for hiring. People love younger Gen X over the rest of these kids.

Here’s the facts very brief. We have never had such an unprecedented run of prosperity as we have had the last 15 years or so. It is very unusual. And as a boomer, I can only remember less than a handful of time prosperity. Every generation thinks it’s got the hardest.

HAHA...I'm sorry that I have to chuckle...I'm gonna be 61 next month and I possess the heart of a Lion and I certainly shall work circles around people over half my age.....I certainly am the perfect example of someone who experiences being judged as someone who will not be hired in the modern day work force.....It's a joke....I evoke the spirit of such individuals who proudly placed their placement in history with example such as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan,Tecumseh as well as Achilles just to touch the tip of the iceberg..HAHA
I can relate
Thank you for your video!
Thank you for watching!
Great video! Very informative and encouraging! Thank you!
Thank you for the sweet comment. I appreciate the encouragement very much.
Walmart or mcdonald's hire older people like you
Ego won't let her do that
2008 was when I made All my money
If I had been smart I would've too, but most of us invested in our 401s without really understanding what we were doing, myself included.
😊 this is why people keep their hair black and so crow's nest😂
I love my hair. End of story.
No offense, but if you're concerned about not getting hired because of your age, you might want to dye your hair. All white hair enhances the "old" look
She looks totally fine to me 🤷🏻♂️
She's nothing like "Lavender" old (see Ken Nordine).
I'm sorry the age is on the paper work.
All that does is poison my body and perpetuate the same old shit of hiding who we really are. I'm proud of my experience and my white hair. ♥
@@hosewatertalksmart answer to a dumb suggestion!
It's almost like asking someone to go under the knife or do a boob job just to impress a potential romantic partner!
Duh 🙄
I had 2 non-health care college degrees before I became a nurse at 49 years old. I had co-workers RNs with former career in electrical engineer, navy, etc. One can find nursing jobs in your 60s ! Where is your resilience!
That's amazing, Gary! Congratulations. I can only speak for myself but I have zero desire to work in health care. My resilience was finding a new path in an area I enjoy to earn an income without an employer. ❤
They have none. They want a $400,000.00-a-year job to stay home and eat Yogurt with their girlfriends.
@@hosewatertalk NO,NO,NO desire can I PUKE NOW?
@@hosewatertalk I HAVE NO DESIRE what does that say. I am too good to work in the medical field makes a person throw up.
Very few jobs have the demand of nursing. But not everybody either wants to be a nurse or has the ability to be one. So the average person is not going to be in an enviable career that they can get a job anytime they want. Maybe this explain a thing or two to you.
Age discrimination, race discrimination, and nepatis. It's not what you know, how reliable you are even if you are the best employee it will come down to who you know.Very sad. Got break free from the system.
100 % True liberals hate the TRUTH.
Wish I had done that decades ago.
The answer is ofans.
Because you have no real world useable skills. As a welder(mig/tig/stick) heavy equipment operator, sheet metal fabricator, mechanic with a CDL license and drug free, I can change jobs every week at the age of 51.
Essentially she is a mid manager and when the economy went shit there is no need for that many managers
Are you certain I have no real world useable skills? Because in the early 2000s my skills were in high demand but now those skills are either aged-out (technology has changed) or largely automated. Congrats on building a career in the trades!
Every company needs accounting and finance, I can work anywhere
Lack of skills is definitely an issue for older job seekers. I'm a 58 year old Gen X veterinarian and literally people are throwing jobs at me every day. I could probably make three times what I am making now but I prefer to work with under served populations in the non profit part of veterinary medicine, my days are way nicer than when I was dealing with the spoiled whinny demanding clients at a higher paying job.
It's not just Gen X. Gen X always thinks it's just Gen X.
I wonder how many naked squirrels were created so you could have a fuzzy microphone.
🤣 Best comment of the day. I promise no squirrels were harmed in the making of my fuzzy microphone. And nah, I don't think it's just GenX, it's all of us, but I'm speaking to my peers who want to do their own thing.
Nice tattoo
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have been thinking about showing how to use crypto wallets and devices. It's not any more difficult than learning how to use mobile devices.
Don't you have a husband to provide and take care of you...?
Why yes, I do, he built me the lovely Amazon cat house you see in the video.
I know the answer, but you don't want to hear it.
i have a solution don't tell people your age!!!
Listen Knuckle head, you have to provide information for employers to know your age.
the old person stereotype of not being willing to adapt is real
Yeah, not for this girl ;)
nope - homeless - next channe lll nice try
How about Only Fans?
the secret for you - is you ditch putting your wants and needs into little chachkie crystals around the house, stop looking at the black mirror, disconnect from all the social media you think is so important , grow up , become a real parent to your children , say sorry to God (repent) and then you might have some maturity influence to now set your sights on becoming the Adult you should have been but you got distracted by things in the world - I can tell all those things need to be fixed by the first 10 seconds of your video and a scroll through your video list. Content creation isn't a job , it's a passtime hobby limited time hang that happened to have some monetary value for a season. Now you have all these single moms sittin around with multiple children from multiple unknown fathers who had a little side gig - now caught with their thumbs firmly up their asses and rotating slowly . Shame on you .
🤣Says the person gazing into the black mirror of social media and watching this video. 🤣
@@hosewatertalk no that argument doesn't work , it's a red herring argument to what I'm actually focused on - the laughter can be your limited hang out.. but you're representative of real-time tragedy , I'm speaking of cell phones and instant social medias that drives the empty minds and souls of lost women (and some men) . I'm speaking of the volume , time, spent observing strangers quantified in ultimate emptieness , shallowness , destruction of primary real life networks due to the feeding from the digital trough... I don't follow you it was a random event - you can't even hear what I'm saying but that's ok because you're the star of your show and I expect that from a modern heathen female who's the star of her own show that sways target audience. Content creation isn't a job regardless if you make your sheckles as a side effect.
Anyone bring any cheese to this whine fest? Poor Gen x. They entered the job market in a recession in the 90s. As a boomer, I entered a job market with a recession in the 80s. Here’s the facts very brief. We have never had such an unprecedented run of prosperity as we have had the last 15 years or so. It is very unusual. And as a boomer, I can only remember less than a handful of time prosperity. Every generation thinks it’s got the hardest.
I think Gen Z has it the hardest IMO. Certainly not Boomers or X, my point is that if you're over 50 and can't find a job it may be time to rethink your strategy.
Ok, Boomer.
Well make a TH-cam about it then
Mid take 🙄
Love the steve martin cruel shoes bit- sorry, just saw the name and it brought back a great piece of comedy history to my mind
