At 61, you should have at least 40 years of experience. If you saved up even 10 percent over 10 years, (which I know most us don’t do.) it would add up to at least a whole year of survival. If you did that 4 times, it would be 4 years of survival. In 4 years you would be 65 and recieve SSI. So I guess you aren’t getting hired because you are basically retired. The first thing to do over 50 is to scale back your expectations. Look for government programs that will subsidize prospective employers for hiring you. Side hustles are exactly that and it may take time to find what works for you. Always remember finding a job is your job. Treat it as such. Anything that pays the bills has to be good enough until you find what you want to do.
when yuo're over 60 you need to keep that job you got absolutely no matter what. some people want to change for that "last job" but don't do it. if you are that age, just be aware that the next job you take will be paying less. IMO. If you don't have full control of a P&L, you are not a project manager. American companies do not empower project management, they essentially make them co-coordinators. Exception being big construction (large buildings / bridges etc...) & Aerospace. I suggest looking to Europe but ensure you have the ability to run a small company because that is the essentially the role of a very senior project manager / director.
Cost of living has generated a collapse without the indicators getting triggered. I am in the Engineering sector in the UK. Atm scraping 4-10 hrs a week on a contract (supposed to be 3 days by choice). They are desperate to keep me on. Manager begging me not to leave. 7 hrs I would be okay but the work has been 4hrs too many times. Not making my half of the utilities bills all the time. Old days I would have been thrown out within 2 weeks everything it’s so weird atm. 2008 I had to take a support worker role for a few years. Hard work but always available. Thankfully got the finances in place this time round.
Wise are those who push HARD to diversify their skills then only seek careers where experience is critical and impractical to bypass with mere training. If it can be done remotely that job is utterly vulnerable. Adult education is an underused resource. (I also worked for the college where I took welding and machining for fun because they hire from within based on instructor recommendation and competent staff are hard to find). Pell grants, lottery money where applicable and other student aid which incurs zero debt are easy to find and it's the Student Aid office's job to get you money. My courses were full of other old farts and we had a fine time. Our instructors had it comfy because their students wanted to be there so if I needed a job I'd consider teaching adults.

I live on royalties these days but sitting around doing nothing is no fun because I like to work and stay busy. This is a great question and I think it has a big influence on things, because there was no "ageism" during the early 2020 hiring frenzy. It took a sudden turn in 2023 in my experience of spending a year looking and speaking to hundreds of others doing the same.
Most older workers have had plenty of time to save up. So it’s definitely stagflation that’s the problem. Yes, ageism has always existed. Yet; I tend to receive it in reverse. Old people are not always kind.

Big mistake waiting around burning money. I took a temp position , using my own car. I made a connection with one of the riders, he said his dad might be looking for someone. I had my resume with me because I would do interviews between drop offs. His dad did call and I got the job. I was 54 went I got terminated.
I've always held down very bad jobs like cleaning, cooking, carrying, driving etc. But I've also been very frugal and saved hard. Come a deep recession I would spend heavily into the market, trusting the gods, it would turn out alright. It is mind boggling how many times it has worked out, even when not every company survived. When you think you save for say 5 years and it does a 4X it is like you've worked for 20 years then the next recession you treble that with other earnings etc, like working 60+ years, then the next recession another treble. At this point it is like I have worked an estimated 955 years!
HAHA...I'm sorry that I have to chuckle...I'm gonna be 61 next month and I possess the heart of a Lion and I certainly shall work circles around people over half my age.....I certainly am the perfect example of someone who experiences being judged as someone who will not be hired in the modern day work force.....It's a joke....I evoke the spirit of such individuals who proudly placed their placement in history with example such as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan,Tecumseh as well as Achilles just to touch the tip of the iceberg..HAHA

This used to be a very common attitude of employers, but thankfully it's changing. Today even cops and bank clerks have visible tattoos. Yesterday a waiter that served me at a fancy restaurant had hand tattoos. The times are changing
@@davidjrb They are only hiring some people with tattoos because there's nobody left. Times are not a changing for the better. Some companies still have standards and won't hire woke women.
One thing is, if your over 50, your not going to be around that job for the next 20 years which is true for me. comes time to collect retirement social security, I'm out.
Thats not it, since few people stay at a job for 20 years, or even 10 years. The issue with older employees is costs: Higher healthcare premiums, and likely higher salaries. Companies will hire 50+ workers if they have some real value that will exceed labor costs: ie able to bring in more sales, or increase revenue 5X or more their salary. For professionals that have skills & over 50, they best way is to start a business (S-Corp,C-Corp). Companies are more likely to hire a contractor to do a job since its a simple Business to business transaction: No payroll\FICA, Healthcare, worker comp, etc.
Hopefully you were diligent enough to save and invest. I left the work force at 54. Only regret not doing it sooner. Of course I have more hobbies than time to do them even when I am retired.

I had 2 non-health care college degrees before I became a nurse at 49 years old. I had co-workers RNs with former career in electrical engineer, navy, etc. One can find nursing jobs in your 60s ! Where is your resilience!
That's amazing, Gary! Congratulations. I can only speak for myself but I have zero desire to work in health care. My resilience was finding a new path in an area I enjoy to earn an income without an employer. ❤
Very few jobs have the demand of nursing. But not everybody either wants to be a nurse or has the ability to be one. So the average person is not going to be in an enviable career that they can get a job anytime they want. Maybe this explain a thing or two to you.
The elephant in the room is medical costs if you want a full time job and that employer has health insurance.. The employers premium cost for a 50 year old might be 10X higher than an 18 year old. If the employer is small they do not have leverage to broker a better deal on insurance. All this got worse due to Obamacare..they have to pay for pre existing conditions. Also pay for kids up to like 26? Too In my business before Obamacare was legally in force my insurance costs for my employees skyrocketed. Went all up before Obamacare capped some rises. So a small business got rate increases of 50 percent and say 35 percent the next year since you elected Obama. So with my employees over age 60 my insurance cost was HIGHER than their wages. That basically killed off making a viable business. So Obamacare created the new norm of working TWO 28 hour jobs. Ie both are not full time so no health insurance. Maybe Harris will have auto insurance do this too. Have your neighbor who wrecks 1 new car a year pay the same as you the safe driver. ?
Essentially, the yt model is either you rely on ad money or the clout to shill courses and t-shirt. Most yters become digital nomad by shilling their digital nomad courses. You are a mid-manager and when the economy goes south corp cuts the mid-manager since they are just bloat
Being an influence is perfectly fine BUT the issue for companies ALWAYS comes to traffic. Basically go where there is qualified traffic. If you are not having traffic you can still be used IF you are a professional Writer, simply because they place created content on their systems. NO company will pay if there is no traffic!
No offense, but if you're concerned about not getting hired because of your age, you might want to dye your hair. All white hair enhances the "old" look

Lack of skills is definitely an issue for older job seekers. I'm a 58 year old Gen X veterinarian and literally people are throwing jobs at me every day. I could probably make three times what I am making now but I prefer to work with under served populations in the non profit part of veterinary medicine, my days are way nicer than when I was dealing with the spoiled whinny demanding clients at a higher paying job.

Side hustles are exactly that and it may take time to find what works for you. Always remember finding a job is your job. Treat it as such. Anything that pays the bills has to be good enough until you find what you want to do.
And you look young for 52. Imagine how it is for people who don’t have a youthful appearance. And yes, looking younger does make a difference folks.
when yuo're over 60 you need to keep that job you got absolutely no matter what. some people want to change for that "last job" but don't do it. if you are that age, just be aware that the next job you take will be paying less. I topped out at 55 and took me a while to figure out that's what happened. Oh well. just plan for it and don't be bummed to take that 20% pay cut
Thankfully got the finances in place this time round.
my boss said that I could not clean and fired me in a week!!!! I am almost 50 and I do not have a job for a long time already!
This discrimination started decades ago in the building trade industry.
I turn 50 in may, i can relate to this big time.
Can you provide a link to the fuzzy mics? Thank you!

you should make more content - do you live in that RV?
Yes, we do. We're building our retirement shack as we affectionately call our house build. What kind of content would you like to see?
I was told that I wasn't qualified to operate equipment that I invented and manufactured. I live on royalties these days but sitting around doing nothing is no fun because I like to work and stay busy. I have a resume that most people would ice pick their grandmothers to have yet none of that matters because I'm 58. I was turned down for three positions this year that I could do with my eyes closed.
On the bright side, I have two new products being released before the end of the year, and I'll probably make enough on that to coast through the rest of my life. But if it is this hard for me, then I can only imagine how hard it is for the average Joe/Jane.
Keep strong. We'll get through this.
Hi, I live in the tropics, Trinidad and Tobago and basically things are such that you work in one job for your entire life.
I am 55 and have 5 years again before retirement
Meanwhile I couldn't get hired for being young because they thought I would skip work to play video games and be lazy, etc.
I'm starting to suspect there's more to this whole story than age too, like there just aren't as many jobs as we're being told. Have you found a job yet?

What if it's more to do about stagflationism and less to do with ageism?
This is a great question and I think it has a big influence on things, because there was no "ageism" during the early 2020 hiring frenzy. It took a sudden turn in 2023 in my experience of spending a year looking and speaking to hundreds of others doing the same.
Humans are allergic to admitting prejudice and privilege exist
Ageism has always existed. I take it that you are not an older worker.
It absolutely is stagflation, and I hate to say this, but it’s only going to deepen over the next few years.
Most older workers have had plenty of time to save up. So it’s definitely stagflation that’s the problem.
Yes, ageism has always existed.
Yet; I tend to receive it in reverse.
Old people are not always kind.

meh I found it difficult once I turned 35 to find employment. I recall I made a call for a job interview once and the guy asked me how I was at flirting ? it was a sales rep job. Then a manager of a lumber liquidators told me " they advertise for help even though they have NO intentions of hiring anyone , they can not hire anyone ... they just advertise for help for some type of government tax break . I suspect all these " jobs " that these new fast tracked immigrants are getting is becaus e the government is offering some type of tax incentive to those companies /... otherwise why else would they hire people who can not speak the native language ..kinda like teh government offers incentives for companies that hire down syndrome people . The only way that we can fix this is making all the US manufacturing companies that went over se4as with their jobs to come back to the US. Oh had another interviewer ask me if I planned on having kids ? good grief
Women are a liability in the workforce.
Yep ngos, corp and gov all gaming the system with the supplemental income, its combination of profits and politics. Companies want to get bigger and bigger like the gov and blue voters support this.
" another interviewer ask me if I planned on having kids"

How did they know your age? Were these in person interviews? You are a younger looking woman but the hair may kill it in an interview. You should be prime age for hiring. People love younger Gen X over the rest of these kids.
You can tell by looking at someone's resume. For example: If her resume says she graduated with her BA in 1995 that would be a give away.

I'm ugly though - like a 4. I can't do TH-cam.

Big mistake waiting around burning money. I took a temp position , using my own car. I made a connection with one of the riders, he said his dad might be looking for someone. I had my resume with me because I would do interviews between drop offs. His dad did call and I got the job. I was 54 went I got terminated.
That's awesome, I'm happy to hear you got a position!
Thank you for your video!
Thank you for watching!
HAHA...I'm sorry that I have to chuckle...I'm gonna be 61 next month and I possess the heart of a Lion and I certainly shall work circles around people over half my age.....I certainly am the perfect example of someone who experiences being judged as someone who will not be hired in the modern day work force.....It's a joke....I evoke the spirit of such individuals who proudly placed their placement in history with example such as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan,Tecumseh as well as Achilles just to touch the tip of the iceberg..HAHA

you have a tattoo on your arm. As a manager looking to fill a role that will represent my company to clients, I wouldn't hire anyone with tattoos or body piercings. The jobs are there and people are needed to fill the roles. But come on... tattoos ? tongue/nose rings? Then you complain?
This used to be a very common attitude of employers, but thankfully it's changing. Today even cops and bank clerks have visible tattoos. Yesterday a waiter that served me at a fancy restaurant had hand tattoos. The times are changing
It's 2024 and you're still judging body adornments?

@@davidjrb They are only hiring some people with tattoos because there's nobody left. Times are not a changing for the better. Some companies still have standards and won't hire woke women.
@@hosewatertalk Yes. This video is a farce.
Thirty years ago employers would pass on older workers but not these days. Project manager??? You mean HR, right?

@@hosewatertalk NO,NO,NO desire can I PUKE NOW?
@@hosewatertalk I HAVE NO DESIRE what does that say. I am too good to work in the medical field makes a person throw up.
Too
In my business before Obamacare was legally in force my insurance costs for my employees skyrocketed.
The affordable healthcare act is an oxymoron and one of the worst things that ever happened to America.
