I disagree. There have been times when I voluntarily changed jobs, then got laid off within the first year. It has made my career history appear very unstable and made it more difficult to find my next role.
I laid off my employer today. For once I was on the upside of the deal. They are super short help and I have a new job for way more money basically doing the same thing I am doing now. Thanks to thing is learned on your channel I was super professional about it and thanked them for all the opportunities and things I learned working for them. Nothing negative. No nit picking or outing co-workers that act like children in the workplace. Drove off into the sunset with a smile on my heart.
I lost my job ~4 years ago. The job was horrible but it was still unpleasant losing my job.. After a while, I was able to get suitable work, I definitely agree with some of the points raised here about budget etc. I was out of work for a while because of the pandemic but I eventually got better paying work (in the government sector with government benefits). I used a bad experience to get something better, in every trouble there's a blessing. Have a good day reader.
'Step into my office!' Been laid off a few times. It's not the end of the world. Basic rule is always be ready to go the same day. Preferably within 5 minutes.
I had the strangest layoff from JP Morgan. They told me my job was being eliminated but I had 45 days to stay on and apply for other jobs. So of course I spent that 45 days looking for a new role and thankfully found one but was surprised they wouldn't just throw me on the streets like most places.
My husband was laid off 5 weeks ago just 2 days after my mom died. He was on bereavement, so he didn’t get to attend the meeting when it was announced, so it definitely was a shock to see that email. It’s been such a stressful time, but we’ve been watching your videos and they have been so helpful in processing all this, and working on what’s next.
I feel you (& your husband). 6 years ago, I was laid off around the time my father passed away. I don't know what mess your husband's ex company is going through, but companies who lay off workers usually have upper management issues not handled maturely & fairly (i.e. upper bosses & their huge salaries are protected first, lower-rank executives get axed out). This usually results in loss of revenue incomes for companies, eventually. I hope your husband will find refuge in rebuilding/upgrading/expanding his knowledge. It'll take time ro invest in some new skillset, but it will pay off & lead to better things than where you are right now. It is the route I took, and it got me a better-paying job I never had in my long career.
I feel his pain. I was once laid off 3 days after my grandfather passed. Sad part is that they had planned to let me go the day of, but obviously I wasn't going into the office at that point. To be honest, I was still in a bit of shock when I was let go, so I suppose I didn't feel it as much as I would've under normal circumstances. I do wish this channel had been around back then. but I'm glad I can look at this now and realize that in hindsight, I did a lot of the Right Things.
This is very sad, I hope everything goes well. When this stuff happens am I the only one who thinks about all the sappy stories on the news during COVID when the whole world was saying we need to care for each other ? I haven't seen society being nicer to each other. I hope you receive twice the amount in your household this summer than what he had with the company that laid your husband off.
I wonder about situations like mine in this environment. I was fired for a contested sexual harassment after 3 months of waiting after documentation and stories were taken. Working for this major corporation, I had a friend who took his first job after retirement from military who quit 2 months prior and he said get out bc of the hostile environment towards men as well as blocking us from learning needed training. I was shocked and went through all the things you mentioned, even enlisted a Life coach to help me get out of the doldrums and make a plan. So I'm past the emotion, and I just need a job. I am not planning for a step up or a class in resume writing, I seem to do well with my personal communication skills and am sure to find something if I can get my foot in the door. even though I was in mgmt. and was making good enough money, this comes as a surprise, and I didn't have an emergency plan.
I was laid off in December 2022 and, 30 minutes ago, just signed an excellent job offer. TWO THINGS THAT HELPED ME, other than Bryan's videos: 1. SPEND MONEY ON A RESUME COACH. My previous company gave me a convoluted job title that I used after layoff, and that title only confused prospective employers. The resume coach convinced me to "correct" the title to something more universal. Then I used job postings for that type of position as a "reverse rubric" so I could restructure my resume and LinkedIn/Indeed profiles. My batting average for conversations and interviews went way up after making those changes. 2. GET IN TOUCH WITH LOCAL RECRUITERS - while I ended up with a W2 position, I was open to working contracts as W2 or 1099. This got me more conversations and interviews, and it helped me to hone my message. I was able to craft and succinctly talk about scenarios as well as formulating thoughtful questions back to the interviewer.
Thank you for sharing! The company that bought ours out updated our job titles to reflect their current structure, so now my title doesn't really reflect what I do. I was wonder if it was okay to correct it on a resume.
Just got laid off a week ago from my plumbing apprenticeship because the company didn’t have enough “work” for me. It boiled down to 2 coworkers not liking me for personal reason. Was a shock that I got laid off as I’m a hard worker and I never call in sick. They even kept a guy with 1.5 years less of experience than me all because of these 2 coworker. Now I see why people say there is no loyalty in the professional world
This is definitely something I hate about this world. It’s all about what this guy says all the time…who you know and networking aka playing the fake I am your friend and your friend game.
@@Derek2k the entire company were somehow my “friends” until we were in trouble…. Everyone always liked me and wanted to work with me but once they weren’t around me, I wasn’t their friend anymore. The trades aren’t safe from these types of people, especially the guys who are next to your best friend one day, and a rat the next
I experienced this as well years ago. One person at my site needed to be let go and it ended up being me because my coworker and the boss were besties before my boss was promoted to being the boss. She was promoted before I started, so I didn't know of this going into the job. I was the hardest worker and even got our sales numbers up with every new hire class because I tried new ideas and kept working to find out what was the best motivation. That site closed about two years after my layoff due to poor performance. Weird how they were an up and coming site before I was laid off. Lol
Thanks for making this video. I was laid off 6 weeks ago and am fortunate enough to find a new role starting next week. I was laid off on a Wednesday afternoon, and had all the reactions you described; shock, disbelief, sadness, anger. I was so emotionally drained that I told my wife I needed to take the rest of the week off to process. Sadly, she wasn't that supportive though and wanted me to update my resume, linkedin and start job hunting on the same day. I had to push back that I couldn't and it was a sore point for a few days. People need to understand the mental well being of the person being laid off and how decompressing and processing is essential.
@@quacker143 We have mortgage, car payments, tuition, and bills. My wife was just worried about our finances, that's all. She's been my rock and foundation all of our married life and always supportive of me.
Hugs, hon. Been there. Am also just laid off. WE ARE WORTHY. Things will be okay. I knew of a man who was a VP in a very large co we both worked at. He was laid off 2 weeks before he retired. The entire office was FURIOUS. He landed on his feet. You will too. I will too. Stay close to God!
Oh man… I was just laid off 3 weeks ago (the day I tried to come back from having Covid) after working with a company for 8 years and I immediately began applying to jobs. I’m just now hearing back from them (2-3 weeks later), but I’m looking back at the job descriptions like “Oh dang… Shouldn’t have applied for that position…” Lol. It doesn’t feel right not working and my lease ends in 2 months, so I immediately panicked. I had a panic attack as soon as they told me I was laid off. Horrible timing and I feel totally backstabbed by my boss. She kept telling me my job was secure, meanwhile, she was plotting to get rid of me. I feel that it’s weird and it says a lot about a company when they don’t give a heads up.
I was at a job I totally hated because it was so Micromanaged as a software engineer... if I went to bathroom too long IT manager lady would ask "Where have you been?" LOL. This was 6 years or so ago before quiet quitting was a thing.. but that is pretty much what I did. Finally they let me go. I did ask one question to HR and my boss.... "Why didn't you let me go a couple hours sooner so I could beat traffic?" :) I was working at great company I'm still at today few weeks later. We come and go as we please. As long as our job gets done and show up to zoom meetings no one cares. :)
Micromanaged as a Software Engineer? WTF? Really? I have been in IT for almost 8 years and I've been a Software Engineer for the past 16 months, and I have never, ever been micromanaged by any of my former employers! I would never accept such toxic behavior by any employer, manager or anyone else at a company!
Let me tell you one thing. The content you keep posting is soo valuable and it has helped me tremendously to think of myself as a free agent. Market is tough right now and I have made myself an extremely valuable employee to my company but at the same time I am applying to open positions as well. We all know what’s gonna happen once I land something substantial. Thanks to you I have come out of employee loyalty concept.
The company actually did me well. They laid me off. Gave me a 2 month notice, and severance pay. They actually are encouraging me to find another job while I’m still working there as I been there for a minute. Nothing personal it’s just business. I’m glad they gave the heads up! They gave me cushion room to look for something
I got let go two weeks back. It took me more than a week to rationalize everything that's happening and decided I needed a short trip to cool my mind and performed a mental reset. Yes, it draws down on me financially, but I feel so much better taking my mind off from the negativity, and now I formulated a plan on how to move forward to look for my next place of employment.
"Getting laid off can be one of the most catastrophic things that happens in your career." In the words of Indiana Jones, "happens to me all the time." I've gone several months between jobs several times since Y2K. Networking: it's not what you know, it's who knows what you can do and thinks of you first when they need that. Career plan: what's that? Interviewing: the only way I know how to practice is to do it, and I'm not doing it when I'm working. So, how?
I remind myself that a layoff is a business decision and not personalize it. It's a great point made that panicking will lead to bad decisions (been there, done that) but it's also important structure your finances so that if you are let go, you can see a way of surviving.
I think taking that week break or so to get your mind off things is great advice. I'm sorry to everyone who is dealing with anger, grief, etc. I can cope better than most because I'm used to losing jobs.
I was laid off late last year and the final Zoom call was just like you mentioned. To be completely honest, I was expecting this since the company had prior layoffs. For a few months after my buddies were laid off, I had to do a lot of more work because they were no longer backfilling the people they laid off and I was the only one who knew the tech we were using. I couldn’t even sleep at night for weeks knowing there there was so much to do. When I saw the “Confidential” email, I knew EXACTLY what it was. At the end of the call, they said good luck to me, and I said “good luck to you too”, and ended the call. I saved some important documents on my computer and closed it; didn’t bother attending the rest of the meetings that day. I was upset, but very happy at the same time. I did want to quit, but I didn’t have another job lined up and wouldn’t have been given severance, so I rode the train for as long as I could while doing minimal work. Now I’ve been in the job market since. At least I can sleep at night and my mental health has improved.
Here’s a tip, don’t buy expensive cars, buy something beneath your means, and live beneath your means continuously throughout your life. You’ll never “fear”
I was just laid off this week, I’m suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Thanks for this video. I’m in so much pain and I don’t know if I will survive this.
Most people don't get to use their preferred skillset at work. Being between jobs enables you to put undivided attention on personal software projects and become desirable to employers who use your favorite tech stack. Interviews serve as an opportunity to present those personal projects. Studying is 100% under your control. That means you never feel powerless in your career.
My last boss called me into a meeting under a ruse of a project meeting but as soon as call starts, he mentions hr is present, i knew i was being laidoff. Unfortunately, i knew it was bs because they claimed shortage of work after hiring 3 people after me. But i remained quiet because they said they will disclose additional severance after the call. They made me run around for my last pay and how to return the stuff. But i did get my fun at the end because when it came to returning their stuff i made it as hard as possible.
These are First-World solutions. If you have most of these options, then you had a "good job" and a "good company". A ton of people are living on a paycheck-to-paycheck basis. Many jobs are now little more than contracting/consultant/temporary employment situations. I wish this video was more calibrated for the rest of us.
I agree with you, he is impart talking about White collar employees, he left out Blue collar. Blue collar do not get severance packages. He is a recruiter for top tier managers and above.
Got laid off a week ago after 7 years of grinding. Thankful for the experiences I gained but still riding the roller coaster of grief. You’re spot on with the feelings you get after the lay off. Subscribed. I will level up from this experience.
I was laid off out the blue a day after Valentine’s Day. Took me weeks to get over the slump and finally got some motivation to really change things as it was difficult moving out of the dead field I was in.
I’m an aeronautic engineer by trade, however I’m also a certified aircraft mechanic and I remember the words my master, the senior mechanic who taught me, told me once: “You are going to be fired for DOING your job”. He was, still is and will be right for ever.
@Fred the 47th Regardless. Either laid off or fired you are prevented from getting a salary, “laid off’ is just a dulcified expression if you will from the word fired. A shameless euphemism. In any case it is usually the most productive and experienced people the ones who are fired or laid off.
I found my dream job 2 and a half years ago. Last year another overseas big corporate company bought us out. Everyone could all see the changes they were making with product and processes were mostly counterproductive or had little to no reason be changed. I tried to ignore it but things got bad. Fast forward and a company that would do well over a million in sales a month scraped by with 300k last month. I'm here because I watched half my company get laid off, me included yesterday. I was 2 weeks from closing on a house. I'm, sad, lost, and I never got a reality slap this hard. I REALLY wish i would've taken action sooner when work started to slow down. I'm kicking myself for it right now.
62 years old.. Had a 'meeting' with 10 other people all hard working good work ethic. Being told we layed off and we can work till the end of the month.. The only red flag was 15 or so people suddenly got transferred to other posts within the company.. Hard to accept especially at my age.. Two years before retirement.. And really needed the work.
I received severance, but was forced to take it or I'd be fired due to "performance issues." I wasn't even given time to look over the documents and, with a bit of pushback, had to convince my ex-boss to allow me to clean out my desk before leaving.
Thank you. This was very helpful to mentally prepare myself if it happens. I’ve never been fired or laid off yet but I know it’s common for people to experience it so it doesn’t exempt me from experiencing it in the future so it’s good to be prepared so I would accept it more easily when it happens. You are absolutely correct about it working out in the end. I know many people who got laid off and were able to find jobs. Even one of my nastiest coworker who was laid off was able to eventually find a job.
@@censoredeveryday3320 I was actually on the edge of being fired from my first couple of jobs but that helped me learn to screen managers more wisely during interview since being a fit seems to be more important than the actual skills a worker can contribute to the company. The problem with corporate is there is not much oversight and there is a level of autonomous discretion the manager has. From my experience there is a subjectiveness with how managers perceive their workers. I’ve experienced extremes where managers were either disappointed in my performance or was exceedingly satisfied with my performance. I’m currently leaning at the latter but it was because I inquired about my current managers expectations during the interview process to see if it was a right fit for me.
Impossible to not panic. Unable to sleep at night, I blindly believed company won't layoffs since there wasn't any before. Had a call last week, 5 min call ended my 5 yrs career. I can't sleep, can't actively participate in anything. Performance was excellent 4.5/5 for past 1.5 yrs. Company used system policy violation termination as an alternative to lay off. Saw a whole bunch of employees with same reason and no prior warnings were provided.
4:00 - I'm pretty sure I cancelled every single subscription except gym membership on Tuesday as soon as I was being told I wasn't getting renewed in December.
If your layoff was NOT performance based, I would recommend asking one of your supervisors (that you trust) if you can use them as a reference. I had the unfortunate experience of being laid off less than a year after hire due to the aftermath of SVB’s downfall. I felt a lot more confident going into interviews explaining that I was laid not due to performance, and telling recruiters upfront that I had a reference that will happily verify that. Actually found a higher paying job less than a month later!
My company laid me off with reason as system policy violation without any prior warnings. Been working in same company for 5 years with excellent performance and they ended my career in a 5 min call.
Thanks for the video. I just got laid off from a company after 19 years of employment. I was there since I was 21. This video definitely give me a lit to think about.
New to your channel. I am 50 years old and have only worked for 3 companies my entire life- with my current employer 16 years. In being present for my family I have been negligent with updating my resume [at least 12 yrs.] and I have never had LinkedIn. I need to be proactive because nothing is promised, question is,, where do I start? Do you have any proven recommendations of services that help with resume building ? Do you already have a video on this topic? Thank you in advance for reading my comment!
Wife just got laid off today, she at least gets paid until her actual layoff date in June and then gets severance pay so we’ll be able to stay afloat for now. I told her just to enjoy her time off for rn and we’ll get to work on laying out a plan. It definitely sucks so bad.
@@sandranenadic4356 thanks for the kind words, she actually found something better in another city so we just sold the house and moved. Starting over now. I can work remote from anywhere so thats helpful. Wishing you the best!

Thank you so much for your calm, comfort and wish sharing! Especially you'd kindly repeating everything would be Ok and You are here to help! Very encouraging and helpful! Thank you again!
Another great reco video! Agreed regarding the outplacement companies. Was laid off in 2019 after 23 years with that company. The outplacement company provided was of little to no value. VERY disappointed. Found more effective direction from videos like this.
Unemployment benefits in some states are excellent. The max in Connecticut is $703 per week for 26 weeks. In Massachusetts it's $1,015 per week for 26 weeks. Florida has by far the worst UI benefits in the country, maxing out at $275 per week and only lasting up to 12 weeks. COBRA is way too expensive. If your state participates in the health insurance marketplace exchange you can find a decent plan for under $400 a month.
Florida's unemployment is exactly the same as Alabama. The cost of living in these states are technically lower (well, at least Alabama is), but they still have not kept up with the cost of living. When I was laid off at the start of 2022, I was really happy I didn't have a car note at the time and that I still had one final week of pay given to me, or else I would've been hurting, especially as I was still recovering from moving into my apartment just a few months prior.
Mine was horrendous. Only like $500 per week and I had a 6 figure salary. Illinois is broke and a joke though so I guess it makes sense why it’s so bad.
Just got laid off on my first day of vacation while outside of the country. Less than a week after signing a 30-year mortgage. I can't understand how someone can play with people's lives in this fashion. Now, with virtually no savings, I need to find a way to put myself together and find a job as I only have 60 days before having to leave the US and the house I just bought. I feel sick 🤢
@@elnetini I sure hope a year later things worked out for you. It is amazing how employers don’t care about the lives of their employees. I just got laid off yesterday. Still trying to process it all.😞
@@shellyhall5580 got rehired with 30% less salary. I had no option had to take it. Was made redundant again 1 month ago. Stand strong, develop your skills during this time and battle on. Better times will come.
Great content. I would encourage more content on problems with outplacement services hired by the previous employer. It was clear this outplacement service was just going through the motions and was not competent. This one company used unskilled contractors. I used their services for one week and realized they were a waste of time and - as mentioned in the video - some of their advice was simply incorrect. At the end of their "services" I received a questionnaire reviewing their performance. It was strange. The questions focused on whether I felt better about my previous employer and whether I had filed any EEOC charge against them. Get money in lieu of a service.
Im about to be Laid Off this next may, and yeah dealing with the emotions and stress thats come out from the notice and then realizing that wont have my Homeoffice work anymore, its kinda rough, I do appreciate those advices.
Here’s another tip. Don’t elect for cobra, the marketplace has comparable plans at way cheaper prices usually, sometimes the plans are better. You just need something in case of emergency in most cases.
I know of a situation where everybody in a major corporation was given Meyers-Briggs. Once out the door with their severance packages, the laid off discovered that certain people who were evaluated as ENTJ or INTJ were in the layoff group.
This happened to me in February and I still haven't found another job because I sold my car 🚗 due to not making enough money. Now I decided to work somewhere close just to get a car. However I had interviews the very next day. I was so in shock I just started to answer interview questions properly in April
The thing with a side hustle with unemployment insurance, you have to report any income which reduces your unemployment insurance benefit. So, you really don’t get ahead.
First thing you do is file unemployment. Can’t help that Tennessee sucks 😂. When I was FIRED (not just laid off) in Idaho from my govt city planning job (the boss was clueless) I got Unemployment AND I got a part-time temp job working with easements, ROWs and entitlements with the state power company. With the money I made with the part-time work and the UI benefits, I was actually pulling in more money than the job I was laid off from. You have to know the system.
I have not been laid off yet, but I'm sure my name is on a list because of my refusal to return to office. It's not been made mandatory, just "strongly encouraged", which is not sufficient for me. For my job search, I've found several companies I am interested in, but I do not fit any of their current roles. They all have a "general interest" type application; do you recommend these, or are they just resume collectors?
I work at walmart 😂. Holly lord is it toxic, no one works they just complain/gossip about everyone else. It is the worst place I ever worked I try to just mind my own business and work but will have 3 random people come to where I'm at to tell me about how so and so is or isn't doing something all day. A guy in my department just complains non stop all day that today when we where downstacking a pallet I finally snapped and told him to "shut up and work!". First time I ever snapped like that at work😂 It's so bad even our HR guy is a jerk. Its rumored they are going to move us to overnight instead of morning for stocking. I went to go ask him about it, he slowly turned looked at me his face turned red and he snapped "IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THAT RIGHT NOW" 🤣 and he is like that with everyone everyday about everything 🤣
I feel somewhat trapped because huge layoffs are coming my way. I may or may not get axed, but I work for a ruthless company which does not dole out letters of recommendation. Why? Because they charge a ridiculous sum for prospective employers to verify/confirm your work history. This scares off potential employers because they often are not willing to pay. I know this because several previous coworkers had this issue.
Pay to get a reference checked by potential employer? That is like extortion and blackmail all in one just so they can give out a reference to them! That is illegal, I would think!
Just got laid off. It’s the first time I have been unemployed since I was 14. Every. Single. Thing you said is what went through my mind. I’m still a bit in shock. 6 years at the same company through the good and the hard times where there wasn’t even a COL increase. I am just shocked. I actually thought I was safe after the first three rounds (over two years) of layoffs, and the facts that I had learned so many different departments and was always ready to do more for them. They never had a problem with me.
Here's my experience from getting laid off. 1.) I have no debt so the only punch in the was really the shock factor. ALWAYS make sure you are using your job to pay off any debt and build that emergency fund. I can only imagine how awful it would feel if you don'opportunities
With inflation now, you need at least a year to cover expenses, you will say, why did I take that 3000 dollar vacation last year and now I am laid off!😮
I've never been laid off. I had the enviable position of being the only one who could maintain a software product. There were times I would call upper management stupid in meetings for not following my strong recommendations. One of those recommendations was to hire my replacement... because retirement was in sight. I had upper management walking on eggshells. Things came to a head in 2021 when my (single) brother suffered a stroke. The extreme stress resulted in an event that my boss's boss wanted to resolve by way of a performance improvement plan. I was not in the mood to accept that level of insubordination. Upon hearing this, I announced my immediate (for all intents and purposes) retirement. This left the company with no one to maintain the software. The company hired a replacement... who lasted six months. The company then downgraded the software from an actual product to an interim solution. I'm sure it has cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars. On top of that, the stock price has imploded. The fun thing about it was that the company exacted revenge on itself. My plan was for a smooth transition. The idiots shot themselves in the foot. ;-)
Not all of us have the time or resources to ignore or pass on the first job offer to be extended. Getting a source of income is far more important than making the next step in your career. Once you have income you can make you next career move.
5k people got laid off from my spouse's company. It really irks me that they reposted many of those jobs and the laid off employees are not getting them back.
YUP. Just this past week, in fact. Been there, done that. Doesn't make it any less terrifying. Especially when there are BILLS involved. Thanks for this.
If it happened to me now, I might retire from where I work. My point is, it depends on your options, but you're right for the vast majority of folks though.
I just got laid off due to the fact that I refused to train anymore new hires without a decent pay raise. I fought to keep this job because it’s such an easy commute from home due to the fact that I don’t have a car. (I live in the country with no public transportation ) so a car is necessary. I have back problems and I don’t want to go back to construction
Regarding losing health insurance, that is definitely a scary scenario. My medication (chronic illness) is close to $100k per year and a catastrophic plan is not going to cover that. 😂 Thoes who need full coverage suffer the most financially.
Welp! I'm here watching this channel because I was laid off again! Once in March 2020 (out of the blue) and now will be without a job in about 4 weeks due to job cuts. I already started cutting out memberships and autoships.
Being fired over zoom or email is utterly utterly pathetic, if your a manager that thinks its Okay to pull this stunt, your a disgrace and should be fired yourself
For COBRA, if you sign up within 60 days, the coverage can be retroactive. I won't sign up right away, but if I get into a situation where I need medical coverage, then I sign up and the benefit is retroactive to my termination date and covers my situation. If at the end of 60 days, I don't need it, then I sign up for another cheaper plan instead. No reason to not take advantage of this "free" period.
I was laid off a couple of days ago. I was fired before lunch, that's the bad news. However, I accepted an offer after lunch the same day :-) That's the good news. They did me a favour doing so.
Yeah. I was laid off Q4 2022 and took the first job offer I got. Substantial pay cut ($25k) substantial drop in responsibilities, etc. Been here 4 months now and I've continued to interview the whole time. No offers. On the one hand, I hate this job and feel like accepting the offer was a mistake. On the other hand, I'd still be without a job right now if I hadn't taken it. I haven't put this job on my resume yet, I'm guessing at some point I'm going to have to. Hoping companies don't judge too harshly.
I've been worse than laid off. I've been denied additional training at my part time job, they complain that I don't sign up for enough hours yet they know I have my other day job, they end the shift right after I arrive in the afternoon, yet they won't fire me. One manager plays nice nice, the other is bad cop, they don't answer emails or phone calls anymore because they want to corral everyone into private chat to correct, berate, and praise them. Because we're "family!" Because they don't want to pay unemployment. I finally reach "full time hours" at the other job on May 1
always pay cash for a car. IF you don't have the money for a fancy car you need an affordable car. YOU WILL get a layoff or a job problem some day trust me. The last thing you want to think about is some stupid car payment. Make sure you have a roof over your head and some food on the table. Always be ready

Agreed
If I followed this advice, I'd be quiting every job I've had too early.
@@censoredeveryday3320 There's no such thing as quitting a job "too early". Always look for the next best opportunity.
I disagree. There have been times when I voluntarily changed jobs, then got laid off within the first year. It has made my career history appear very unstable and made it more difficult to find my next role.
@@nick8243 You need to look for work even after you accept a job offer and your butt is in a seat.

This is similar to myself. Glad you didn't go back to private sector and went with Civil Service instead !
'Step into my office!' Been laid off a few times. It's not the end of the world. Basic rule is always be ready to go the same day. Preferably within 5 minutes.
Oh you take your time leaving lol
@@australian1018 That would not work at my company, I have seen people escorted out by law enforcement. We do DOD work.
I had the strangest layoff from JP Morgan. They told me my job was being eliminated but I had 45 days to stay on and apply for other jobs. So of course I spent that 45 days looking for a new role and thankfully found one but was surprised they wouldn't just throw me on the streets like most places.
Many companies will escore you out immediately soon after a layoff. They see you pack your stuff and out the door you are. 😢
Sorry you had to experience this!
If you qualify for vocal Rephap, then them that you give up. They will take over your job life.
Thank you for sharing! The company that bought ours out updated our job titles to reflect their current structure, so now my title doesn't really reflect what I do. I was wonder if it was okay to correct it on a resume.
It should be in every employee's skillset to be prepared for a layoff. You shouldn't take too long feeling bad most of the time it's not your fault.

@@youngdanz8149I agree so please consider plying the trades with a Civil Service Agency.
I just got into the trades. It’s real cutthroat. No write up, no report, they can just cut you loose off word of mouth.
Sadly it appears your wife values you only for what you can provide.
Time to reevaluate if your partner is really the right one for you. You need someone who will support you through the hard times in life.

Unemployment not much but better than nothing
I was at a job I totally hated because it was so Micromanaged as a software engineer... if I went to bathroom too long IT manager lady would ask "Where have you been?" LOL. This was 6 years or so ago before quiet quitting was a thing.. but that is pretty much what I did. Finally they let me go. I did ask one question to HR and my boss.... "Why didn't you let me go a couple hours sooner so I could beat traffic?" :) I was working at great company I'm still at today few weeks later. We come and go as we please. As long as our job gets done and show up to zoom meetings
no one cares. :)
Wow!
Yea im experiencing the same type of toxic work behavior
I might be getting laid off and takimg a trip will be something on my list. After all if I get a job again I might not get the opportunity for a while
"Getting laid off can be one of the most catastrophic things that happens in your career." In the words of Indiana Jones, "happens to me all the time." I've gone several months between jobs several times since Y2K.
Sometimes its personal they just don't say it. Employers tend to hire those they like and sometimes more than one's ability to do the work.
Exactly

Great advice. I e been laid off 3 times in the last 7 years and everything you said is spot on
I was just laid off this week, I’m suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Thanks for this video. I’m in so much pain and I don’t know if I will survive this.
Laid off 5 days ago. 10 years working there. Still dealing with it.
Laid off yesterday, have 4 month severance..Had vacation scheduled for the next day. On plane right now headed to Maui…
All of these are true but take from his vids what works for us & disregard the parts that are for the 1%.
Perfect timing. Sooooo many layoffs recently, especially in the entertainment business and in Silicon Valley.
Got laid off a week ago after 7 years of grinding. Thankful for the experiences I gained but still riding the roller coaster of grief. You’re spot on with the feelings you get after the lay off. Subscribed. I will level up from this experience.
Laid off yesterday. Position eliminated. This is great advice. Never thought to review a severance package, so will do that.
@Fred the 47th "Fired" means no unemployment benefits. "Layoff" means unemployment benefits.
Everyone should be fired or laid off at least once so they can learn how to process the emotions.
Fully agree with your recommendations, and first and foremost: don't panic!
I laid off before yesterday only so i can relate the contents and thanks for suggesting and guiding us the right track to follow.
Laid off on Tuesday, lost my car… felt like my world is crumbling. But I am married to the best man ever who is very supportive

Agreed regarding the outplacement companies.

The outplacement company provided was of little to no value. VERY disappointed.

FL UI has been stuck at 275/wk for 20+ yrs
Florida's unemployment is exactly the same as Alabama. The cost of living in these states are technically lower (well, at least Alabama is), but they still have not kept up with the cost of living. When I was laid off at the start of 2022, I was really happy I didn't have a car note at the time and that I still had one final week of pay given to me, or else I would've been hurting, especially as I was still recovering from moving into my apartment just a few months prior.
Im truly blessed to qualify for the max in MA. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
California is $450 per week. Terrible.
Mine was horrendous. Only like $500 per week and I had a 6 figure salary. Illinois is broke and a joke though so I guess it makes sense why it’s so bad.
Stop worrying about being layoff. Quit without giving them two weeks notice is the best way.
I'm here after being laid off just weeks before my baby is expected to arrive. Thanks for all the valuable information.
I recommend getting your house in order first and always. Not having debt makes employers significantly less terrifying during hard times.
I've been let go/laid off many times. Consider it a new opportunity with a different employer. It could be better then what you had before.

Hope you got the job
24 hrs after mass lay off. Its so sad because i LOVED my job but they didnt love me back

The thing with a side hustle with unemployment insurance, you have to report any income which reduces your unemployment insurance benefit. So, you really don’t get ahead.
8am this morning began as normal, was told team meeting @ 9am. 8:30 I'm called into the office and handed my Severance package.
How?
First time I ever snapped like that at work😂
It's so bad even our HR guy is a jerk.
You must work at my walmart 😆😆😆
I sent out hundreds of job applications the moment I was laid off! Now I had two interviews and three more this week!
Always have 6 months of expenses covered!
Another great video, thanks
How would you recommend quantifying performance when you were the one to establish a procedure or process?
That's just dumb.
2:09 Just got laid off, and this has been helpful soo far. Thank you!
When is my company going to lay me off! Every day that passes makes me hate that one person more every day
For COBRA, if you sign up within 60 days, the coverage can be retroactive.
My manager told me today at 4pm. I have until Jan. 3 next year. It was all financial issues.
I was laid off a couple of days ago. I was fired before lunch, that's the bad news. However, I accepted an offer after lunch the same day :-) That's the good news. They did me a favour doing so.
Thanks. Well, I consider myself lucky. I have a high demand profession in the IT.
My job let us know today. 2 months notice, 2 months of pay for severance if we stay till closing, job placement & constant work rill we close
