Why It’s So Hard to Get Hired After 50
Laid off in your 40s or 50s, why the job market is awful for Gen X
มุมมอง: 6 132
Cost of living has generated a collapse without the indicators getting triggered. I am in the Engineering sector in the UK. Atm scraping 4-10 hrs a week on a contract (supposed to be 3 days by choice). They are desperate to keep me on. Manager begging me not to leave. 7 hrs I would be okay but the work has been 4hrs too many times. Not making my half of the utilities bills all the time. Old days I would have been thrown out within 2 weeks everything it’s so weird atm. 2008 I had to take a support worker role for a few years. Hard work but always available. Thankfully got the finances in place this time round.
What do you do for work?
Yes.
The answer is ofans.
a flat piece of plastic, wood, or metal with a thin row of long, narrow parts along one side, used to tidy and arrange your hair
😊 this is why people keep their hair black and so crow's nest😂
I love my hair. End of story.
Oh my God. Lady you are awesome. But man, some of the most asinine comments I’ve ever read. And except for those, some of the most insightful. Some TH-cam channels have the patience of Job.
It's time to start your own. Screw them
Being an influence is perfectly fine BUT the issue for companies ALWAYS comes to traffic. Basically go where there is qualified traffic. If you are not having traffic you can still be used IF you are a professional Writer, simply because they place created content on their systems. NO company will pay if there is no traffic!
You look 40 but with white hair
I died and returned. I will try and make money myself. These jobs out here aren’t even enough for bills
I work in retail and am very experienced. In my early 50s. I get laid off every 3 to 5 months. I need to wait maybe a month and then another company will pick me up. There is always a way out.
She still Beautiful at 50😊😱🌷🌻🌹
What was it that Bill Clinton said? Oh yeah, “it’s the economy stupid”.
Actually it was James Carville that said it while he was acting as a surrogate for Clinton.
And you look young for 52. Imagine how it is for people who don’t have a youthful appearance. And yes, looking younger does make a difference folks.
It's not so bad for old timers. A lady even older than me got HER new job which she then used to relieve me of MY job at age 49. Such efficiency!
Great video. Ageism should be punishable by Prison time.
So should hiring based on DEI
HAHA...I'm sorry that I have to chuckle...I'm gonna be 61 next month and I possess the heart of a Lion and I certainly shall work circles around people over half my age.....I certainly am the perfect example of someone who experiences being judged as someone who will not be hired in the modern day work force.....It's a joke....I evoke the spirit of such individuals who proudly placed their placement in history with example such as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan,Tecumseh as well as Achilles just to touch the tip of the iceberg..HAHA
my boss said that I could not clean and fired me in a week!!!! I am almost 50 and I do not have a job for a long time already!
I work at home depot, and most of the new managers are people over 50 that are starting a second career from construction or real estate and even some that are from the medical field. They open 2 new home depots, and Costco's, in my area, and they did not have enough managers, so of course they promote it, people that are willing to move up and those are the people I'm talking about.
I've always held down very bad jobs like cleaning, cooking, carrying, driving etc. But I've also been very frugal and saved hard. Come a deep recession I would spend heavily into the market, trusting the gods, it would turn out alright. It is mind boggling how many times it has worked out, even when not every company survived. When you think you save for say 5 years and it does a 4X it is like you've worked for 20 years then the next recession you treble that with other earnings etc, like working 60+ years, then the next recession another treble. At this point it is like I have worked an estimated 955 years!
Beautiful.
the secret for you - is you ditch putting your wants and needs into little chachkie crystals around the house, stop looking at the black mirror, disconnect from all the social media you think is so important , grow up , become a real parent to your children , say sorry to God (repent) and then you might have some maturity influence to now set your sights on becoming the Adult you should have been but you got distracted by things in the world - I can tell all those things need to be fixed by the first 10 seconds of your video and a scroll through your video list. Content creation isn't a job , it's a passtime hobby limited time hang that happened to have some monetary value for a season. Now you have all these single moms sittin around with multiple children from multiple unknown fathers who had a little side gig - now caught with their thumbs firmly up their asses and rotating slowly . Shame on you .
🤣Says the person gazing into the black mirror of social media and watching this video. 🤣
@@hosewatertalk no that argument doesn't work , it's a red herring argument to what I'm actually focused on - the laughter can be your limited hang out.. but you're representative of real-time tragedy , I'm speaking of cell phones and instant social medias that drives the empty minds and souls of lost women (and some men) . I'm speaking of the volume , time, spent observing strangers quantified in ultimate emptieness , shallowness , destruction of primary real life networks due to the feeding from the digital trough... I don't follow you it was a random event - you can't even hear what I'm saying but that's ok because you're the star of your show and I expect that from a modern heathen female who's the star of her own show that sways target audience. Content creation isn't a job regardless if you make your sheckles as a side effect.
Nice tattoo
I turn 50 in may, i can relate to this big time.
it is not just gen X
I am glad I retired at 41. Everyone laughed at me when I was younger, when I decided to take the career path I took. They are not laughing now. There was another man that took the career path I chose and has two full retirements and is working on a third. He is laughing all the way to the bank.
yup.....i know nyc sanitation workers retire at 21. Twenty year career. Half pay and benefits at 41. Cops too
They don’t want to pay for experience older workers have and like to push kids around , no rocket science there dear
nope - homeless - next channe lll nice try
This all came into stark focus one day after getting a degree in my 30's in STEM (engineering), literally 1000's of resumes and no job. An insider pulled me aside one day while walking to my car and said "they did background search and credit check before you came in. You were a mystery as you didn't have any social media to speak of. They found out your age and you were done before you stepped in here. Sorry, but I don't think it was right so I'm telling you" I said "I never consented to a background search," which was replied to with " I know, it's illegal but they do it anyway." From my experience which has fueled my opinion, starting a new career, even in your mid to late 30's is probably dead on arrival. Schools and people will tell you the opposite, but they're not the ones who will have to live it out. You are. Except for a few exceptions, career changes late in life, or at least ones that don't fit societal norms of progression and status at certain age points is a dead proposition before it starts unless its something like nursing where they just need bodies desperately. Not to disparage nursing. It's obviously a great career field. However, I watched two things repeatedly happen in nursing that do not happen in other industries from my perspective. 1- In some area's you can really screw up, like kill someone by accident, and be fired and rehired at the same hospital within months. I've seen it more than once. 2- They don't care if you're 20, 50, or even 70. If you can do the 12 hour shifts and not be a burden to other staff, you're good to go. I can't think of another industry that is so forgiving of age as health care is.
You rock!!! Girl.
the old person stereotype of not being willing to adapt is real
Yeah, not for this girl ;)
Hi, I live in the tropics, Trinidad and Tobago and basically things are such that you work in one job for your entire life. I am 55 and have 5 years again before retirement
That fire looks hot, has she created that? Lovely muff on that microphone, saves buying a cat as well.
I was told that I wasn't qualified to operate equipment that I invented and manufactured. I live on royalties these days but sitting around doing nothing is no fun because I like to work and stay busy. I have a resume that most people would ice pick their grandmothers to have yet none of that matters because I'm 58. I was turned down for three positions this year that I could do with my eyes closed. On the bright side, I have two new products being released before the end of the year, and I'll probably make enough on that to coast through the rest of my life. But if it is this hard for me, then I can only imagine how hard it is for the average Joe/Jane. Keep strong. We'll get through this.
Don't you have a husband to provide and take care of you...?
Why yes, I do, he built me the lovely Amazon cat house you see in the video.
Interesting you say we are viewed as not technologically adept-some of us have had four decades experience with technology. A lot of that gives you a significant informational advantage over people who only know about about smartphone-era tech.
@0:27 I guess, ostensibly too expensive and not malleable enough is the reason.
An older employee is considered high risk to the company. More likely to get hurt on the job requires more time off for doctor appointments and requires more money to start with.
Not true, I require less money than younger candidates. I didn't pay a million for my house, and its paid off. Older workers are cheaper. And I haven't been sick for 10 years (because I wear a mask). Oh, and all kids are out of the house. People 23-55, they are the expensive ones, because they have a mortgage, kids come home with diseases, and all the worries that lead to alcoholism. Everything you say is a stereotype, not based upon actual data, living situation varies widely. If people hire based upon age or looks, they are just plain idiots. And idiocy isn't an age thing, it's a function of brain size, work ethic, and how much you abuse yourself with drugs or alcohol.
They can hire 2 people for what you make at 50, your more likely to use your time off, you won't work sick, you go to the Dr when I'll. Most employers are self insured, your a expense to be cut at 50!
@@jakeleone8944 your personal experience doesn't matter, it's all about how an insurance company looks at statistical averages.
May not be age related, if you want to put that to test, change your resume to make yourself 15 to 20 years younger & see what happens. Good chance you still have issues finding a job. Issue is that with online job applications is that companies get bom(b)arded with thousands of resumes & 99% of them have no qualifications for the job position 1. Try directly applying on the companies website instead using job sites. 2. Tailor your resume to the job description (no more, no less). If you put too much they think you going to want a bigger salary then they can pay for the position 3. Consider starting your own business & working as a contractor\consultant. Companies are more likely to hire consultants since its a Business to Business transaction: no healthcare, unemployment insurance, Payroll\FICA, Workers comp, etc. That said you need to be incorporated, S-Corp, or C-Corp perferred as many businesses avoid LLCs because of bad experiences in the past. You need to be a corp because companies don't want to deal with the hassle of 1099s and some states go after companies that have 1009'ers if they don't pay their taxes. That said the issue for companies is soaring healthcare costs. The older you are the higher the premiums and companies with 50 or more employees are forced by law to provide a healthcare plan. Funny they cannot increase your premiums because you smoke, obese, but they free to jack up premiums based upon your age! Going as an consultant or business gets around this issue, because the company isn't on the hook for insane healthcare premiums. The other issue is that its harder for women to get jobs because of the MeToo backlash, as companies are terrified of lawsuits.
I'm 35 and it's too difficult for me to get jobs
As someone who's approaching 50, I think people don't like being around or looking at people when they get old. And it only gets worse the older you get. I mean. Look at how we treat the elderly.
I'm in my 50s and looking for an entry-level job. I have been on several phone interviews, and filled out a lot of applications, but I still have a hard time getting hired. Every day, I wish I invested my money wisely in the past so I could just leave the rat race behind.
Tips: Make sure your resume / LinkedIn profile goes back no more than 15 years. Make sure you don't post a picture on LinkedIn. And I think getting a makeover and using Botox is unfortunately necessary to look younger. It's all about putting food on the table.
Thank you for your video!
Thank you for watching!
I'm ugly though - like a 4. I can't do TH-cam.
Look up faceless content creation. If you like reading - ai story creation. Nature streaming. Or even product recomendations but focus on your hands. And don't put yourself down, you can find someone who likes you.
I bet you're lovable af.
Not all youtubers show their faces for various reasons! They could be shy or fugitives or just mirror-cracking ugly af! They simply do voice-overs!
Me too I am 64 and not attractive for youtube
I know the answer, but you don't want to hear it.
You look young. Very interesting and intelligent. You will find a job. 😊
How did they know your age? Were these in person interviews? You are a younger looking woman but the hair may kill it in an interview. You should be prime age for hiring. People love younger Gen X over the rest of these kids.
You can tell by looking at someone's resume. For example: If her resume says she graduated with her BA in 1995 that would be a give away.
on the nose
the ATS software can be used to discriminate
I've heard this too.
No offense, but if you're concerned about not getting hired because of your age, you might want to dye your hair. All white hair enhances the "old" look
She looks totally fine to me 🤷🏻♂️
She's nothing like "Lavender" old (see Ken Nordine).
I'm sorry the age is on the paper work.
All that does is poison my body and perpetuate the same old shit of hiding who we really are. I'm proud of my experience and my white hair. ♥
@@hosewatertalksmart answer to a dumb suggestion! It's almost like asking someone to go under the knife or do a boob job just to impress a potential romantic partner! Duh 🙄
