  • This Kick and Bass Mixing Technique fixes all traditional problems with Side-Chain Compression. A professional Audio Engineering teacher Andrew Zeleno shares unique Mixing Tips from his Online Mixing Course. This Mixing Tutorial will demonstrate issues with Kick Bass Mixing and offers an amazing Mixing Trick. To Attend a free trial Class of this Audio Production Course send email to: mixingcourse@andrewzeleno.com
    In This Video We Will Talk About: We will check why it is so important to fix Kick and Bass and what is really wrong with it. We will check a song I wrote for this video where I implemented this amazing technique. First, I will show the most known techniques and why they have flaws. What Kick and Bass are made of and what frequencies they contain. We will examine the waveform structures. We will talk about phase issues. And what is a partial out of phase cancellation. We will check the most traditional Mixing Techniques which use things like Side-chaining, Dynamic EQ, Mutliband compression with a side-chain. I will explain every move on each peak of a note and how attack and release of a compressor affects it. How Release causes residual compression. And what it has something to do with disadvantages of all traditional approaches. What is equal power exchange and why mixing tricks you know can't implement it. We even check the frequency analyzer for the transient and sustain. We'll check overtones of a bass. I will show you how to implement a silent trigger track which has something to do with AZ Independence concept. Then I will show you the fastest editing technique to implement this trick.

You will pay only after you start the course and you can do it during the first week of a month. Not in advance. Also we have monthly payments. So you don't pay for the whole course. I will be proving that it's the top quality education class by class. 99% of students finish all 9 months of the course. I've been doing it like that for 8 years in a row.

    I'm a current student of Andrew's starting my sixth month of his class. Take his class! His teaching methods and approach, as demonstrated in this video, will instill confidence in you to know how to mix and master music. I've spent thousands of dollars on static video courses and came away more confused. Andrew's enthusiasm leading the class keeps his students engaged in the material. Andrew does not phone it in. He is the real deal. You will not be disappointed.

    I'm currently a student in Andrew's class and my music is improving with every class. I'm a hip-hop artist who produces, and engineers my own music and I have learned a ton of things that have helped take my music to the next level in many areas. His lessons are very detailed and he covers all the things you need to know in audio engineering. He also makes it fun and easy to understand. Andrew saved me a lot of time from searching topics on TH-cam because everything I wanted to know is all in this course. I recommend this course you take want to take your music to the next level. I will never pay for mixing and mastering again.

    I am current enrolled in Andrew's mixing course, been doing it for about 6 months now. An amazing investment, this video is only a small snippet of the knowledge he shares in the course. The course covers every aspect of mixing including compression, EQ, etc as well as all of the tiniest nuances most people wouldn’t even think to cover. The detail is amazing. Personally, my mixes have improved substantially in the 6 months, and the biggest takeaway is all the technical knowledge/experience that Andrew shares and his way of thinking which is soooo different to anything else I've experienced. He's an excellent teacher. Highly recommend to anyone serious about mixing/engineering/production!

    I started Andrew's course in December last year. As I was a beginner in the audio world, I thought maybe the course isn't compatible with my knowledge at that time. Regarding the courses, Andrew's teaching style it’s very unique, everything well explained, and of course, the courses are designed for every level of the students whether it's a beginner or pro. Now attending the course for six months so far, I can mix and master my tracks. He is not a teacher who teaches what inside the books, he is more like Guru who teaches the knowledge. Outstanding 🙏🙏

    I started this course in December and have got top marks for my mixing projects at university because of it. Andrew's teaching method is amazing and very easy to understand. Each class is packed with knowledge and you really start to see how to use all the mixing tools properly with the pros and cons that they have. The compressor topic is gold! Understanding the settings and how different models of every compressor works differently with their own coloration, really helps you decide to pick the right one for the job and hear what it's doing to your sound. It's a deep dive into everything audio. Best mixing course out there!

    Andrews approach to music as a job, offers the most in-depth view on all aspects of sound. The way we think of music/sound may very frequently be different from what is actually happening in the real physical world. As seen on this video, he approaches sound from the real physical side, so you can understand and interpret what you feel/want to guaranteed results so you don’t get stuck when you want to achieve a particular goal. I was always looking for a scientific answer for what I feel within the music that I like, and from my experience so far, his course is exactly what I was looking for. It often means a lot of your perceptions will be broken down, so you can built new knowledge on a steady and proven foundation. This way you can tackle any situation that comes your way in music production/mixing/mastering.
    Cant suggest this course enough. It is widely applicable from novice to seasoned pro and you always learn something new.
    Great job Andrew

    I can't recommend Andrew's audio engineering course enough. There's quite simply lots of practical and useful understanding, insight and knowledge that I've not seen covered anywhere else. What I've found most useful is he teaches the principles and the "ugly truth of audio" so you get no hype no BS, just what works. I mean, who else covers compression models so that you can learn and appreciate unique audio colouration? Who else dives into studio set up so you're informed of what specific frequencies need to be managed? Who else provides their own unique methods and techniques and models so you don't get confused on frequency distribution of instruments and fundamental tones and how compression and EQ affects transients and tails and its result in the mix? It's 20 years of audio experience packed into a no holes-barred course, which even has a live student homework check of mixes done on Cubase. Many have said it already, there's more than 3 years university knowledge packed into this 9 month course, and I'm just starting month 6. Do yourself a favour, if you work in audio or are passionate about sound, join Andrew's class. You won't regret it.

    To the 7 thumbs down 👎🏻 I see! Link me to your mixes and projects. I want to hear your work. I’ve been attending classes with Andrew Spooky Tom” Zeleno since December. He has introduced me to mind blowing techniques and concepts. His class and his intellect have helped me to comprehend sound and music on a whole new level. How industry engineers achieve their results is no longer a mystery. He has broken sound and mixing down into sections. When you start to understand these sections as a whole, a new understanding and proficiency becomes second nature. My mixes have speed up by 50% and I am not even applying all of the techniques I have leaned. This course has been hands down the best investment I have made as an engineer! Andrew is the real deal and he lets go of information the others hold onto. My son and I have benefitted from our investment into these classes. I am getting more work and making better results. Andrew Zeleno is hands down a mixing guru of which I’ve never seen.

    I am a former student of AZ and his masterclass helped immensely with my mixing, and also cleared up my bad habits that I used to have when working on my own projects! Especially in regards to studio setup, panorama, the nuances of compression and EQing and how to hear the subtle changes that are occurring, and of course how to properly use mixing tools with a purpose. Anyone that's interested I'd highly recommend you check out the class!

    An amazing video as usual! I have stumbled on this channel 2 years ago and I've been a student from December 2020 - one of my best investments in the last several years. As you all know mixing consists of manipulating the physical waveform of a sound, which can be very dry and hard to understand matter, but the way Andrew explains everything is very practical and easy to comprehend. The knowledge in this class has brought my mixing skills to another level from the first lecture. I highly recommend it!

    Very cool video thank you for this! I’ve experimented with many side-chaining techniques (compressor, multiband, dyn-eq) over the years, never tried this way. Found that using filters to focus kick/bass, doing a small scoop where the bass & kick fundamentals clash, using basic volume balance (great monitoring is key) and using saturation through the same plug but shifting it adjacent to each other (one odd, one even) works great 👌🏽 but will shootout with this!

  • @MrPerfectpizza
    @MrPerfectpizza 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tutorial. I always tried cutting 1st harmonic of bass by about 10db with a dynamic bell curve filter to clamp down on the transient. Problem is it is only any good until you change the pitch, then you spend lots of time automating the eq. The length of kick plays a big part too in ensuring no frequency clashing.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The 1st harmonic (0 overtone)? The problem is not the transient of the 1st harmonic. To be honest I don't think we are talking about the same thing. I explained around 13:49 why cutting just lows doesn't work perfectly. But the main point of the video is don't allow the transient to exist in what triggers compression at all.

    • @MrPerfectpizza
      @MrPerfectpizza 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Zeleno thank you so much for your explanation. Sorry, I did mean the initial transient which I tried to attenuate using dynamic eq using the classic method. In some modern dance music, the transient of the kick is often required for extra punch. Some engineers even weld different transients onto the front of their kicks to emphasise the punch further still. Using AZ independence technique, how might this work the other way round so that kick has dominance? Would you shave off the transient of the bass and keep transient of kick so that the sustain of the kick triggers the sustain of the bass? Obviously this transient of the bass would be compromised this way. Have to say your videos and explanations are awesome. Hope to do your course in the autumn. If I can’t get kick and bass right, I may as well give up! Greetings from London.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No matter what you decide to do with a bass transient, the cool thing about this technique that you have an equal power exchange. Perfect drop on the bass to put the tail of a kick above it. Then you can decide to do whatever you want with the transient of the bass. As you said you want more space for the transient of the kick, then you can apply any transient boost on the kick and any transient drop on the bass. It will have nothing to do with the tails. They will work properly on their own. And you will be able to control transients without any influence on that compression.

    • @MrPerfectpizza
      @MrPerfectpizza 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Zeleno I had to watch the video again and I understand your concept now. There is a lot to take in. I have one last question - will the transient of the bass conflict with the transient of the kick here, as no side chain compression is applied to either? I know both are very short sounds, but would these spikey transients be enough to send your signal into the red? Since you have complete control of their separate tracks, I guess you could avoid clipping by adjusting their volumes. And you could always offset these transients very slightly on the timeline. Cheers.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As for transients, with this technique you can design transients separately in any way you want. This technique only creates an equal power exchange for the tails. Even if you drop or boost transients after you apply this technique, nothing will be changes for the tails. As for going in clipping (Red) it seems like you a bit floating in understanding the levels and clipping. But I can't explain anything here in text. It would be a book. Anyway make sure you understand that TH-cam doesn't give notifications about replies to comments. I will miss your next reply with 99% of chance because I can't reread all comments under this video. So it's better to post a new comment. Anyway I think I spent more time with your comment than any other comment under this video. I hope I helped with something.

    I was thinking about a way to automate this.
    I believe it would be by using an hypothetical gate/noise gate in the sidechain track,
    with very low threshold and instant attack with no release.
    The effect would be implemented if the noise gate has a parameter I would call "delay"
    or "predelay" in ms that will delay the trigger of the attack by xx ms, and therefore, cutting
    the start of the waveform. That is why I call it hypothetical since, as far as I know,
    no gate/noise gate has this parameter.
    By the way, I attended Andrew's trial class. I learned so much just on a single class.
    I very much recommend to take the full course, which I'm looking forward to start soon.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Hugo. Gate will not be working for this task. The transient of the kick in the project is the loudest part of the kick. Gate preserves the loudest parts. But then it pushes the tail all the way down. And the longer the tail goes the quieter it will be. We have a totally opposite task. We need the tail of a bass to come back in volume to the end of a kick tail which Gate can't do. Also, we need this volume to come back with a equal power exchange. The quieter tail of kick becomes the louder the tail of a bass becomes. Gate can't do it.

    • @alienmachine
      @alienmachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about applying a transient designer to the sidechain and reduce the transient gain before it reaches the compressor?
    Thanks for explaining. Your course must be great I will try in the future

      It was a part of the video where I showed flaws of transient shappers because they are commonly work just like a fade in. So they may leave a bit of a transient and affect the tail like it doesn't have a part of it in the beginning. I showed many on them. But eventually I cut that part of the video because it would be too nerdy and too long.

    This is so valuable content! I can only advice everyone who would like to get his mixes and knowledge elevated to take the course, it's really cheap and affordable compared to all the rest we have to spend our money on and I already spent unnecessary money on certain plugins which I think I would not have bought again just through the knowledge thought in his course. I am 100% convinced there is no school, class, course which comes even close to what Andrew teaches. I've watched so many top level mixing engineers with multi platinum mixes out there who don't even know a percent of what Andrew teaches. And you know what? At this point they might not need it, cause they have so good ears and experience they just learned how to work around it and achieve the sound they want, but for anyone with less then 20 years experience and multi platinum mixes it's very very harmful to adopt there ways. We just throw some cla 76 on our vocals and just don't know why they end up being too thin. His topic on compression alone is priceless and I already know so many of the mistakes I done and why. Guys, don't fight with your mixes and start just taking his course. It's only 9 months and very intensive. I watched the best mixers in the world doing the craziest shit with their plugins, emulating and adopting from them is really nothing but harmful. You just end up mixing and mixing and fighting with the results till you end up spending more on shitty plugins which don't improve anything. I fought with these esses and sibilance in German language for the last couple of years till Andrew came and just thought us to increase the range and work with threshold on that damn pro ds. Man what we learned so far is really really valuable stuff. You can't get that from books and will never learn that from any mix engineer out there. Especially not from top level mixing engineers with hundreds of billboard placements. Think about it. Do they or even you really take the time to compare every single one of your 100 compressors and understand and learn there nuances? Compressor is eq. What? Why have never anyone thought about that before? Which one tightens the instrument, which one makes it fatter, warmer, darker? Which one emphasizes sibilance and saturates it, so you'll fight with them for the rest of your mix? Oh man how many hours have i spent, cause I didn't know a single nunace of these? Greets to waves. Love you Andrew! Keep up the good stuff!

      I asked Daniel to write a review here. He is my student. If you will be attending one of my classes as your free trial class you will be with him in the same group. Their group will finish the course in late September 2021. You can even ask my students for their opinion in person if you like.
      I use the most fair approach. No prepayments. You get a free trial class which is a real class with my students. If you like it, you enroll. But still no payments in advance.

      All DynAudio aspects but much more expensive than they give. But I can't recommend anything if I'm serious about consequences of my suggestions. I don't know how loud you listen to. What room and room size you have. How good your acoustic treatment. How you listen: whether you look for specific aspects. How you will place them. What settings on the back you will use. If you will have it without Subfoofer or not. The distance to them. You will put them to the wall or with the distance. Etc Etc. I should be a salesman or amatheour to believe that one monitor model will be suitable for all situations and every person.
