Another great technique Andrew, can't wait for the rest! The last two months of the course are being A-MA-ZING, just thinking of the last two reverb classes, can't wait for the remaining ones, they were a game-changer. I never even thought one could go so deep on this topic: it's not just picking the appropriate reverb, but using physics and psychoacoustics principles to tune every little detail of the reverb, from spectrum to stereo width, shaping dry signal, early and late reflections individually for the best sound. If you want, you can make your mix so that you can close your eyes and believe the band is playing live in front of you :)

You went from reading about ice cubes engineer on the SSL board in the 90s to producing and mixing for him. Very impressive and that track sounds fire. This video is three years old since then I feel like I’ve seen a lot of plug-ins come out with separation of the EQ transient / sustain. They are watching ~ SplitEQ, Ozone 11 EQ, Michaelangelo EQ, Harrison Drum Flow to name a few
The original companies who stole my idea of separation Transient and Sustain was w factory and Eventide. They release their plugin 6 months after I released my video. And I was stupid enough that I didn't patent this idea. I don't do this mistake.

For sure Jeremy. Movements from Reverb layers or a double side-chaining or a control over consonants in Vocal Reverb or other parts of my system... I will be releasing videos on it from time to time.
You save time. When you have a problem with trad processing you will spend hours until you find some plugin or settings which will not have those disadvantages and you probably still will have them. Instead you realize the problem. You quickly edit the waveform. It's a matter of 30 seconds if you are good in editing. I've been editing for 10 years when I was working for a broadcasting company.I edited Literally a million kilometers of waveforms. After this you edit with no problem. Secondly you don't need it on every instrument. Only for those with those situations of cons of the traditional approaches. Thirdly, we don't have 4 minutes unique notes. In modern music production even if you play a guitar, in most cases you have a recorded short piece. Let's say chorus riff. And copy and paste it. So you need to edit only that short piece and put it in place. If you have the owner of the project they can tell you what was copied where. Fourthly imagine you mix and it simply doesn't work good. You find extra 5 minutes to apply the only technique which will be working in this case.
Genius. Thank you for this information, something I would have never considered by myself. I'm not sure if I will start chopping up my tracks to process all the transients independently, but it's useful information to have nontheless and it may come in handy.
It's just a second solution if something traditional bring their cons. Also, I didn't show 90% of principles of this technique. Like movements from Reverb layers, double side-chaining, the control over consonants in Vocal Reverb etc
Wow that's crazy ! Like you said when you add EQ or comp you also bring bad stuff. This method greatly reduce the negative effects of compression and EQ !
Exactly. it's the main point of this technique. We consider the negatives of a traditional processing first. And then we avoid them by using this technique
15:00 haha when I was making music at 14 I would be doing all sorts of weird plugin combinations and one thing I stumbled upon was a transient designer feeding a distortion on drums sounded cool

Interesting how you can split the signal and crossfade it and get the same sound, seems like there would be a volume dip in between the transient and sustain
It's the same waveform. One copy of it is gradually going down and the other copy of it is going up with exactly the same pace :) It's totally the same.

Wow, that really is a groundbreaking technique, and you explained it in a way that is easy to understand. Now I get the advantage of processing the transient completely independently from the sustain/body of the sound. And now I understand why multiband effects (and really any effect) can cause unwanted artifacts in parts of the sound that shouldn't have those artifcats in them. Thanks for explaining it Andrew.

You are a great mind! I am Andrew´s former student and his course is a game changer. Now about this video...At first was thinking it is great but really time consuming. But after a thinking about it for a while and reading through comments I´ve realized you don´t have to use this technique all the time and it was never meant to anyway! And it´s exactly what Andrew teaches. What to use, how to use and when to use! Let´s say your kick is great in a verse but then in a chorus it gets lost behind heavy guitars. EQ doesn´t work neither does compressor because they do something wierd to the tail. You can use this technique only for the choruses! And if everything is fine you don´t have to use it at all. It can solve lots of problems and there are many creative things you can do with this (like with reverb or sidechain, imagine the possibilities). I personaly don´t see myself using this very often because I am all about performance when recording, I am no copy paste guy and I want me and my clients to play or sing the song through and then corect mistakes if needed and when we need to do verses seperately from choruses lets say, I will have different take for each verse and each chorus because I find that when performing and not copying, the song feels better and have more soul. I also like to record with outboard gear on the way in to get the sounds I want and then I use just a touch from plugins when mixing and with all knowledge I learnt from Andrew I am getting great results this way. Nevertheles, this technuiqe is AMAZING and can help a lot! Wow!

Your the best thank you the missing things i needed for a full clean mix i only lacked the way to make a clear and present full mix i am a great composer and produce sounds well but i lacked gear and there was some frequencies i cant hear but with these techniques i can rest all these sounds that clash together and will make my mix much cleaner specially for the kick the A z technique is indeed the best so far .

6:00 but when you separate the audio like that you will introduce a click. Is it not better to automize the bypass button once the transient sounded, i know that fab filter eq3 is buffer free so it does not introduce a click when you bypass it with the bypass that comes with the plugin.
I don't introduce any click. I use micro fade in and fade out. If there is some click it's a bug with editions of the video. Also, this concept is not just about those simplest examples I showed in the video. It's about Reverb layers, double side-chaining, Dynamic EQs etc. Plugins will never have enough power to implement this concept by themselves.

Hi. No. It's not the same at all. First of all I showed only 10% of ideas related to this concept. But even for those ideas related to dynamics, a multiband compressor will not be related at all. A multiband compressor controls the whole note but with different effect in different frequency ranges. This technique is more about parts of a note.
I never comment on TH-cam, and I've always felt that side chaining had some kind of draw back or inaccuracy when it came to giving clarity to the low frequencies in kick and bass especially with release times. Once you started explaining your method of processing the transient and sustain separately, in this specific manner, its like things just made so much sense. Ive always tried to have control over certain elements by processing them independently but never like this. The preservation of dynamics in my mixes and cleanliness of the rhythm in the low end after using this method could literally bring a tear to my eye relative to my previous work. There is so much possibilities with this method on many different instruments I'm inspired and grateful you shared this with the mixing community. I've watched so many mixing tutorials and read so much online and physical material about mixing and mastering but I've never been able to understand it as well as after watching your videos. Your explanations are very concise and detailed, with many answers to the "whys" which is something that is much needed for novice mixers like myself who are passionate in learning more. Thank you, I'll definitely be looking into joining your course in the near future.

This is an excellent idea, especially on percussion, I think (kick in particular). In a way, I think the compression version is a little bit like parallel compression in practice, where you get more of the transient because of the parallel blend, but still get increasingly more of the compressor sound on decay. Obviously this is a totally different concept of how to process, though, and is a lot more flexible than that.
Incredible! I thought about it but I used to use transient shapers. But how can we keep this through the master-buss section? With compressors, limiters e.t.c.
Splitting transient technique looks cool but editing every note in dense mix could last hours and hours. Any input on speed up the work? I will experiment with kick.

Just one Question, since i am visually impaired i only follow the audio of your video, and can't see what you're doing on the screen. Do you cut the transients from the sustain by some waveform editing in 2 different copies of the same track or do you use some helper plugins on one track with it's inverted functionality on the other? And related to the example with the kick drum, what speaks against paralel compression with fast attack? Is the sound more natural when using this new technique or what? fyi, i am using logic pro, since most functionality can be accessed using voiceover on mac, although there are still lots of improvements to be made, but over all i am astonished on how much is already working.
Hi. Difficult to answer all your questions because it would take a lot of time. I will answer on one of those just to make it fair that I at least was helpful: Parallel compression affects on both: transients and sustain. Here we had a totally opposite idea: not to touch the transient at all. But saturate and thicken up the tail fully. Parallel compression will affect on the transient no matter what. Even a bit is too much in that example where we fought for every little piece of the punch. Also parallel compression with not make it very pronounced on the tail because the point of parallel compression to bring something partially keeping something from unprocessed sound. I brought full blown effect for the tail. Not just partial effect.

Has you ever had the problem by listening a project where you thought someone talks and you find out that there are frequencies in the project that makes this effect. And sometimes the simplest things can make a problem, like the end of an instrument part, before a new part starts. Other people don't know in the end how long it needs, but you are happy that it sounds good and better as a or versions before. Why ? Their transient and sustain separating algorithm is not perfect. I can do things much faster, with better quality and easier in my way. Also I can choose any great EQ instead of that one which is in those plugins. After I released this video some plugin manufacturers made their plugins in 6 months after I release this video. But I didn't find any good plugin which can be comparable to what I can do on my own.

If you feel suspicious about all the comments praising the course instead of discussing the video like I was 8 months ago, don't be. This channel is Andrew's way to reach out to his potential student, so he asks his current students to write a couple of words. The videos serve more as educational bonus. Seven months into the course, starting from the very beginning, I can say that the course is worth every penny and minute I have invested. Before the course, I tried to get an idea about mixing from the hundreds of sporadic videos on TH-cam. As a result, I hysterically threw plugins into the inserts of my DAW with no grounds other than hope that they make some wonders. Sure enough, they did not, and I ruined multiple songs. The content of Andrew's course is opposite to sporadic (partly that's why it's so long). It is well-structured, covers a myriad of aspects from the very basics (often undeservedly neglected even by experienced musicians and producers) to advanced. The course provides a good theoretical basis spiced with several (within the seven months it has been four) home works where you can try and get checked by Andrew what you have learned. The homework analysis is public, so you can see not only your work, but also the projects of your group mates and learn from the sessions not less than from the lectures. The course mostly covers sound mixing, but interestingly some of the aspects prove to be useful in other aspects of music, e.g. in practicing the instrument. Overall, this is a very good course I personally can recommend. If you have questions, I will happily answer.

Thanks a lot Andrew for this really great video. Very interesting concept but how to apply it in a real mix ? You have to cut and separate every transients and sustains of a kick track for example ? It would take ages to do that manually. Maybe you will show how to apply it in a future video.
You save time. When you have a problem with trad processing you will spend hours until you find some plugin or settings which will not have those disadvantages and you probably still will have them. Instead you realize the problem. You quickly edit the waveform. It's a matter of 30 seconds if you are good in editing. I've been editing for 10 years when I was working for a broadcasting company.I edited Literally a million kilometers of waveforms. After this you edit with no problem. Secondly you don't need it on every instrument. Only for those with those situations of cons of the traditional approaches. Thirdly, we don't have 4 minutes unique notes. In modern music production even if you play a guitar, in most cases you have a recorded short piece. Let's say chorus riff. And copy and paste it. So you need to edit only that short piece and put it in place. If you have the owner of the project they can tell you what was copied where. Fourthly imagine you mix and it simply doesn't work good. You find extra 5 minutes to apply the only technique which will be working in this case.

I use boz transgressor 2 all the time for this, it's changed the way I mix. You have a threshold (with sidechain filters) which separates transient and sustain and lets you solo and EQ each of them individually with flexible eq filters. Using the solo feature you can easily use individual plugins on each too, just mult the track and solo transient on one channel and sustain on the other. The detection circuit doesn't always separate the transient and sustain perfectly, but it's pretty close and so fast to set up. Especially useful if you have long sections of audio you would otherwise need to split into transient+sustain pieces. Great video, I hope to take your course when I'm less busy!

I asked a valid question. Just because you didn’t understand it, doesn’t mean I didn’t watch the video. Pretty sure parallel compression achieves the same thing, preserve the natural transient, and get all the sustain you want. My question was pertaining to a multi-band concept, instead of compress, expand. Seems way less surgical.
I hope you undestood that this technique has nothing to do with particular processing. It's not for EQ or compressor. It's for everything. Even for layers of Reverb. Even for Dynamic EQ to fix its cons, even for separating kick and bass with side-chaining. Maybe for one of 100 examples something else will be a substitute. But for other 99 cases it will not be working.
Also you say about multiband. It has nothing to do with the transient. Multiband compression will affect on your transient and sustain plus it will change your frequency balance even if it's just a bit. I'm talking about fixing common issue with literally any processing related to transient/sustain interactions.
Give it a shot. I'm not insisting. I have plenty of students. I just feel if you really need it but English is the only obstacle, at least try it out to make sure it's really an obstacle.

But it's not only about EQ. It's about distorin in recording, compression. My system has even movements from Reverb layers. It has double side-chaining not to lose punch. I have the control over consonants in Vocal Reverb. Also, I can split in my way and with some eoverlaps. And I can choose any EQ I want with any curve or any coloration. That plugin has only EQ and only one EQ.
Interesting. It's got a heap of features for how you separate the transient from the body of the sound. Plus, you can solo each, so you could in theory use it in parallels and apply further processing such as saturation to the separated elements. Your method would be the best as far as artefacts and phase coloration but it's more laborious to manually edit
Anyway I'd say we can't agree with each other here in the first place because you didn't see 90% of my method. There are too many things this plugin even not capable to do. But of course it can be good for some tasks. Why not.

You went from reading about ice cubes engineer on the SSL board in the 90s to producing and mixing for him. Very impressive and that track sounds fire. This video is three years old since then I feel like I’ve seen a lot of plug-ins come out with separation of the EQ transient / sustain. They are watching ~ SplitEQ, Ozone 11 EQ, Michaelangelo EQ, Harrison Drum Flow to name a few
The original companies who stole my idea of separation Transient and Sustain was w factory and Eventide. They release their plugin 6 months after I released my video. And I was stupid enough that I didn't patent this idea. I don't do this mistake.

Genius. Thank you for this information, something I would have never considered by myself. I'm not sure if I will start chopping up my tracks to process all the transients independently, but it's useful information to have nontheless and it may come in handy.

Wow that's crazy ! Like you said when you add EQ or comp you also bring bad stuff. This method greatly reduce the negative effects of compression and EQ !
Exactly. it's the main point of this technique. We consider the negatives of a traditional processing first. And then we avoid them by using this technique
15:00 haha when I was making music at 14 I would be doing all sorts of weird plugin combinations and one thing I stumbled upon was a transient designer feeding a distortion on drums sounded cool

Interesting how you can split the signal and crossfade it and get the same sound, seems like there would be a volume dip in between the transient and sustain
It's the same waveform. One copy of it is gradually going down and the other copy of it is going up with exactly the same pace :) It's totally the same.

Wow, that really is a groundbreaking technique, and you explained it in a way that is easy to understand. Now I get the advantage of processing the transient completely independently from the sustain/body of the sound. And now I understand why multiband effects (and really any effect) can cause unwanted artifacts in parts of the sound that shouldn't have those artifcats in them. Thanks for explaining it Andrew.

You are a great mind! I am Andrew´s former student and his course is a game changer. Now about this video...At first was thinking it is great but really time consuming. But after a thinking about it for a while and reading through comments I´ve realized you don´t have to use this technique all the time and it was never meant to anyway! And it´s exactly what Andrew teaches. What to use, how to use and when to use! Let´s say your kick is great in a verse but then in a chorus it gets lost behind heavy guitars. EQ doesn´t work neither does compressor because they do something wierd to the tail. You can use this technique only for the choruses! And if everything is fine you don´t have to use it at all. It can solve lots of problems and there are many creative things you can do with this (like with reverb or sidechain, imagine the possibilities). I personaly don´t see myself using this very often because I am all about performance when recording, I am no copy paste guy and I want me and my clients to play or sing the song through and then corect mistakes if needed and when we need to do verses seperately from choruses lets say, I will have different take for each verse and each chorus because I find that when performing and not copying, the song feels better and have more soul. I also like to record with outboard gear on the way in to get the sounds I want and then I use just a touch from plugins when mixing and with all knowledge I learnt from Andrew I am getting great results this way. Nevertheles, this technuiqe is AMAZING and can help a lot! Wow!

Your the best thank you the missing things i needed for a full clean mix i only lacked the way to make a clear and present full mix i am a great composer and produce sounds well but i lacked gear and there was some frequencies i cant hear but with these techniques i can rest all these sounds that clash together and will make my mix much cleaner specially for the kick the A z technique is indeed the best so far .

6:00 but when you separate the audio like that you will introduce a click. Is it not better to automize the bypass button once the transient sounded, i know that fab filter eq3 is buffer free so it does not introduce a click when you bypass it with the bypass that comes with the plugin.
I don't introduce any click. I use micro fade in and fade out. If there is some click it's a bug with editions of the video. Also, this concept is not just about those simplest examples I showed in the video. It's about Reverb layers, double side-chaining, Dynamic EQs etc. Plugins will never have enough power to implement this concept by themselves.

Hi. No. It's not the same at all. First of all I showed only 10% of ideas related to this concept. But even for those ideas related to dynamics, a multiband compressor will not be related at all. A multiband compressor controls the whole note but with different effect in different frequency ranges. This technique is more about parts of a note.
I never comment on TH-cam, and I've always felt that side chaining had some kind of draw back or inaccuracy when it came to giving clarity to the low frequencies in kick and bass especially with release times. Once you started explaining your method of processing the transient and sustain separately, in this specific manner, its like things just made so much sense. Ive always tried to have control over certain elements by processing them independently but never like this. The preservation of dynamics in my mixes and cleanliness of the rhythm in the low end after using this method could literally bring a tear to my eye relative to my previous work. There is so much possibilities with this method on many different instruments I'm inspired and grateful you shared this with the mixing community. I've watched so many mixing tutorials and read so much online and physical material about mixing and mastering but I've never been able to understand it as well as after watching your videos. Your explanations are very concise and detailed, with many answers to the "whys" which is something that is much needed for novice mixers like myself who are passionate in learning more. Thank you, I'll definitely be looking into joining your course in the near future.

This is an excellent idea, especially on percussion, I think (kick in particular). In a way, I think the compression version is a little bit like parallel compression in practice, where you get more of the transient because of the parallel blend, but still get increasingly more of the compressor sound on decay. Obviously this is a totally different concept of how to process, though, and is a lot more flexible than that.

Just one Question, since i am visually impaired i only follow the audio of your video, and can't see what you're doing on the screen. Do you cut the transients from the sustain by some waveform editing in 2 different copies of the same track or do you use some helper plugins on one track with it's inverted functionality on the other? And related to the example with the kick drum, what speaks against paralel compression with fast attack? Is the sound more natural when using this new technique or what? fyi, i am using logic pro, since most functionality can be accessed using voiceover on mac, although there are still lots of improvements to be made, but over all i am astonished on how much is already working.
Hi. Difficult to answer all your questions because it would take a lot of time. I will answer on one of those just to make it fair that I at least was helpful: Parallel compression affects on both: transients and sustain. Here we had a totally opposite idea: not to touch the transient at all. But saturate and thicken up the tail fully. Parallel compression will affect on the transient no matter what. Even a bit is too much in that example where we fought for every little piece of the punch. Also parallel compression with not make it very pronounced on the tail because the point of parallel compression to bring something partially keeping something from unprocessed sound. I brought full blown effect for the tail. Not just partial effect.

It's opposite. You save time. When you have a problem with trad processing you will spend hours until you find some plugin or settings which will not have those disadvantages and you probably still will have them. Instead you realize the problem. You quickly edit the waveform. Secondly you don't need it on every instrument. Only for those with those situations of cons of the traditional approaches. Thirdly, let's not pretend you have 4 minutes unique notes. In modern music production even if you play a guitar, in most cases you have a recorded short piece. Let's say chorus riff. And then people copy and paste it. So you need to edit only that short piece and put it in place. If you have the owner of the project they can tell you what was copied where. Fourthly, imagine you mix and it simply doesn't work good. And I offer you a real solution how to fix all problems. But you say no just because you can't find extra 5 minutes to apply the only technique which will be working in some case? Again it's an option. I didn't force you to apply it :)
No, don't get me wrong result is pretty obvious. But some projects can be very big and many riffs and parts and layers so that at first sounds very much time consuming and even hard possible to track every note. But you show us really cool trick and I am very greatful for that.

I mentioned the moment when you keep a spectrum on the SPAN screen (transient) and add another screen on the same SPAN (release), to compare them. The scene is at exactly 3:00 mins.
SPAN is on the master bus. I have a separate channel with the transient. I solo it. Then I go to the Static menu. And hit the Take button.

It's not easy to find the right balance in a song, but you show nice examples.
Has you ever had the problem by listening a project where you thought someone talks and you find out that there are frequencies in the project that makes this effect. And sometimes the simplest things can make a problem, like the end of an instrument part, before a new part starts. Other people don't know in the end how long it needs, but you are happy that it sounds good and better as a or versions before.

you must check out the new eq that has seperate procesors for transient and sustain its this idea in an easy interface!
Why ? Their transient and sustain separating algorithm is not perfect. I can do things much faster, with better quality and easier in my way. Also I can choose any great EQ instead of that one which is in those plugins. After I released this video some plugin manufacturers made their plugins in 6 months after I release this video. But I didn't find any good plugin which can be comparable to what I can do on my own.

Seven months into the course, starting from the very beginning, I can say that the course is worth every penny and minute I have invested. I've been editing for 10 years when I was working for a broadcasting company.I edited Literally a million kilometers of waveforms. After this you edit with no problem. I use boz transgressor 2 all the time for this, it's changed the way I mix. You have a threshold (with sidechain filters) which separates transient and sustain and lets you solo and EQ each of them individually with flexible eq filters. Using the solo feature you can easily use individual plugins on each too, just mult the track and solo transient on one channel and sustain on the other. The detection circuit doesn't always separate the transient and sustain perfectly, but it's pretty close and so fast to set up. Especially useful if you have long sections of audio you would otherwise need to split into transient+sustain pieces. Great video, I hope to take your course when I'm less busy!

Would upward compression or frequency expander do the same ? Basically boost the frequency at the point of the transient.

I asked a valid question. Just because you didn’t understand it, doesn’t mean I didn’t watch the video. Pretty sure parallel compression achieves the same thing, preserve the natural transient, and get all the sustain you want. My question was pertaining to a multi-band concept, instead of compress, expand. Seems way less surgical.
I hope you undestood that this technique has nothing to do with particular processing. It's not for EQ or compressor. It's for everything. Even for layers of Reverb. Even for Dynamic EQ to fix its cons, even for separating kick and bass with side-chaining. Maybe for one of 100 examples something else will be a substitute. But for other 99 cases it will not be working.
Also you say about multiband. It has nothing to do with the transient. Multiband compression will affect on your transient and sustain plus it will change your frequency balance even if it's just a bit. I'm talking about fixing common issue with literally any processing related to transient/sustain interactions.

Andrew, have you tried Boz Digitals' Transgressor plug in? It has separate eq for transients and body
But it's not only about EQ. It's about distorin in recording, compression. My system has even movements from Reverb layers. It has double side-chaining not to lose punch. I have the control over consonants in Vocal Reverb. Also, I can split in my way and with some eoverlaps. And I can choose any EQ I want with any curve or any coloration. That plugin has only EQ and only one EQ.
Actually I realized that plugin is even worse than I thought. I can't define the separating point in the way like I need in many cases.
Interesting. It's got a heap of features for how you separate the transient from the body of the sound. Plus, you can solo each, so you could in theory use it in parallels and apply further processing such as saturation to the separated elements. Your method would be the best as far as artefacts and phase coloration but it's more laborious to manually edit
Anyway I'd say we can't agree with each other here in the first place because you didn't see 90% of my method. There are too many things this plugin even not capable to do. But of course it can be good for some tasks. Why not.
