- The Google Pixel Slate is Google’s answer to the iPad Pro and Microsoft Surface devices. The Slate takes some of it’s cues from the Pixel Book (Chromebook) but packs it into a removable tablet style form factor. So is the Google Pixel Slate any good? Can it compete with the iPad Pro and Microsoft Surface?

The only main advantage the Pixel Slate had over the iPad was a desktop class browser, but iPadOS now gave that feature to the iPad now which leaves no reason to choose the iPad over the Pixel Slate. No wonder why Google gave up on the Pixel Slate.

Guess what? I use it as my daily computer and am perfectly happy with it. I get about 12 hours of screen on time and multitasking is unparalleled by any other tablet. The powerful cpu and 120hz refresh rate is just a cherry on top

Looks good, but they need a full OS. Not sure why these tablets are running mobile browsers when Surface has already proven how well it can run a full computer browser and do it well... These are both downgrades from Surface IMO.
I agree, Surface is still miles ahead of both the iPad and Slate in almost every way. Plus it still has a headphone jack.

Can install full Linux apps on this Slate as far as I understand. Making this more capable than any iPad and as capable as the Surface as long as the Linux alternatives to the windows counterparts are suitable for your use.

@@cinialvespow1054 I think these kinds of laptops can replace Wacom's professional art tablet's with screens. I can imagine an artist using this. The pen might be less precise than a professional one.

@@cinialvespow1054 The category is called a detachable 2 in 1. I use the surface pro 6 as a laptop but also to draw and most importantly take notes. The full windows and peripheral support allows me to do document and other school work as well :) the only thing I would use the iPad for rather than this is to play fortnite XD ;)

I'm an apple hater for the most part but I absolutely love my iPad Pro. Why? The pencil! It's amazing for taking notes or drawing. I have stacks upon stacks of notebooks laying around from previous courses but the last two semesters I haven't touched a notebook for any classes. The iPad pencil is that good and has replaced paper and pen for me. On your iPad pro review you did a segment where you focused on the pencil but not so on this Pixel Slate. If the pencil on this is as good as the iPad pro I will sale my iPad and pick this up asap. So my question is why would you not focus on the pencil here at all? Is it that bad? Either way I hope you revisit this with an in depth comparison of the pencil use on both the iPad Pro and Pixel Slate. Please up-vote this so we can get a pencil comparison

Ryan Walkos Marques brown did a review and he said that the google pencil is not very good, and that you have to press really hard to get it to draw or write.

Feel like you could easily get a decent thin laptop for the same price, but get gpu support and better IO support.

Depends on what you want to do. If you're an artist or video editor then iPad is better but if you want to game then surface is better as it can run desktop games (although frame rate is going to be absolute garbage)

Windows 10 doesn't work real well with Touch screens. I'm interested about how he just ignores the price. you could buy two pixels for the price of the iPad and thats not even top specced..

You can only make trashy youtube videos at hopingly 1080p. Surface on the other hand has a full graphics backend to it, professional grade tools and assets.

Marques has a different model. Mkbhd's is the $599, Lew's is a more expensive one.
Marc Tang yeah well the lower end model shouldn't exist at all. The fact that Google shipped it shows they care way more about making a quick buck than they do about their customers.

@@FS-me8mj not in the sense of a MacOS or WindowsOS, it's a really young and old rudimentary OS, but yes it does indeed run the same operating system as chrome laptops (which are all weak btw).

Not necessarily true. The point of a tablet is to be an all-in-one screen. Typically resulting in a cooler, quieter, lighter, and touchable device. The keyboards are totally optional and can be folded or detatched. One of my favorite features of the tablet configuration is that the device won't get hot in your lap when using it in a "laptop" configuration, because all the components are in the screen. Tablets, especially the Surface Pro, just straight up feel more futuristic than laptops, and will likely end up largeley replacing laptops in the next few years.
@@AriTheElk That would be sad. I'd rather have a laptop keyboard than just a tablet. I've tried using a tablet before, and it's just not my speed as far as user experience. To be comfortable viewing it, I have to hold it up, which gets tiring, but it's either that or crane my neck, which also hurts.

I don’t see the point of buying a tablet for work and a laptop replacement. I use tablets for watching movies playing games and all sorts of entertainment and I also do some school work on my ipad cause it is so portable. But why would you buy a tablet to do real work with it. Current laptops are so much better at that. Edit: Btw I really like the new iPad Pro and I have already ordered one. It really is the best tablet you can get and you can do some really nice video and photo editing with it cause it has so much power and thinn design, but it is not meant to replace your macbook or any laptop. If you want to do some real work and lot of writing you buy a macbook for that. Why would Apple sell macbooks if the iPad is meant to replace them.
Alex S Yeah I actually really like that the iPad Pro has so much power and features in it and still has impossibly thinn and light design and I have actually ordered one already. But if you buy it to do some real work, it’s not gonna be that great. It has all the power that you need and you can nicely do some video editing but the typing experience is bad it has no trackpad or mouse support and it dosen’t work with full desktop websites. I think that the iPad Pro is for those who want the best tablet in the world and also want to be able to do some video and photo editing on the go. You can take the iPad anywhere cause it has LTE and it is really portable, but for real paper and typing work that you do with macbooks it is better to stay with laptops. Why would Apple sell macbooks then?

There's a model of the Pixel Slate with the Intel Core i7, so I think that it can *possibly* replace a laptop
Thats why I have The pixelbook 2. It literally does both jobs almost perfectly. Its great as an entertainment tablet and as a work machine.

Ngl.. ppl always make apple seem like the best brand ever but really its not. I've seen improvements in andriod than in Apple, Android actually learn from their mistakes. An Ipad is really good and really useful though it is a little too expensive and i could get a $100 tablet from a small brand and its perfect. I think this google tablet is dumb but apple is not everything. I've always wanted an Ipad bc of how good it is and useful aswell. I am an artist and procreate is an easy app to use but i could easily get a samsung tablet and download Ibis paint X and im good to go

Watching this on my HP X2 Chromebook that I got to replace an iPad Pro 12.9 and Surface Pro. I loved the iPad as a Tablet but it had too many limitations for anything other than consuming content. The Surface Pro was good as a productivity tool but rubbish as a Tablet - Windows 10 just isn't right for touch yet.
The X2 Chromebook for me is the perfect replacement - it's good as a Tablet and good as a Productivity Tool - not the pinnacle for either but does both well enough in one device rather than having to use 2.
That's what I think Lou is saying here - we're finally getting devices that can do both. Plenty of people viewing this will say 'it's not as good as the iPad Pro as a Tablet' or 'it's not as good as a Surface Pro/Book for productivity'. That's still true but to have decent versions of both those devices you're dropping over 2,000 USD. I've spent 800 USD on my X2 with 8GB RAM and it performs really well.
If you're happy to keep having multiple devices and spending the money that's fine but my X2 Chromebook does all I need in one.

I mean I’m in university for biology currently(going to switch to political science) and so far my pro has done literally everything a laptop can do besides excel. There are some real limitations on iPads excel app that drive me crazy. You can’t make trend lines from your graphs which is absurd. But other than that the thing is amazing. In political science I will probably literally never need to use a laptop unless I have to make trend lines for populations or some shit on the iPad eventually. The iPad is more than enough to be productive for most people. But it does have its limitations, and is better as a companion device to your main device which for most people isn’t a problem due to most households having a capable desktop in their homes. Hopefully IOS 13 brings well needed upgrades to the iPad Pro, like mouse support for Christ sake. I love my iPad Pro though.

In my opinion, there's a few advantages over the SP. My big concern (after using the SP3) is the user experience and battery life. And LTE.

I am a Technology Coordinator at K12 school and I use my Google Pixel Slate as my daily driver and love it and I have found many ways to make it work for me to the point to not need a Windows or Mac PC to do my job.

7:06 to 7:09 is all this slate can do. You try to push it even further down and the magnet part will come off, from the top of the device. Max you will get with this is 60 degrees of the ground. Surface pro can go almost all the way down(15 degrees above ground!) and then all the way up. Why bother doing all of this then? Why not just copy what surface did? They copied almost everything else anyways...
Who the hell needs a screen that can just face straight up if ur using it as a laptop hahah - dont see any problem with the angles achieved by the Slate

Thanks Lou, but I really want another in-depth analysis and comparison between the two. Both are potential future laptop replacements. But the main factor is the software. I wanna know where iOS or Chrome OS holds back their respective devices from reaching full potential. iOS apps are perfectly suited for the iPad. But some Android apps still have ways to go on Chrome OS. This hybrid technology is really exciting. We have the USB C issue, for external device support. Pixel slate does it better than the iPad. I really really really wanna see a full comparison between the two with future improvability, and scope for further development of both the hardware (especially on the Pixel) and software issues on both, and the fields where they both excel, for content creators, laptop replacement users or the general light workload public. Wait, finally we're seeing a tablet that can replace a laptop? Had you ever heard of surface? I'd say finally Google and Apple might be approaching what Microsoft did half a decade ago. Everybody gave them a hard time for Windows 8 and it's unfamiliar interface, but look where that road has led them. They were too far ahead of the game then, and Windows 8 had it's problems, but why aren't we comparing these to a surface?
because the surface tablets are using a software is better to use with keyboard and a trackpas. Its kinda awkward to use their software while holding it. As someone who is looking for tablet, i want a tablet usability, comfort and not a laptop

farhan sadik no he is right, I use windows daily for everything from gaming to music production. I have owned a surface pro 4 twice(both devices failed on me) and windows is still to this day a very shitty tablet experience. The iPad is a great note taking device, and an amazing tablet but is a shitty laptop. The surface is a mediocre laptop(unless you are just doing web browsing, and note taking, file editing) and a terrible tablet with heaps of quality control issues. I love windows(I also love Mac OS, but I don’t own any Mac OS products) but the surface pro isn’t a good device. The surface book looks amazing though, but is a lot more expensive than the pro, and it probably has quality control issues aswell. I would probably get a dell over a surface pro, like the XPS 13. That’s a great windows laptop.

Reading the specs, I just discovered that none of the config options include LTE connectivity, although of course we can use most phones as hotspots, and apparently if you have a Pixel phone it will connect automatically. There are some buyers who will like the built-in 4G for iPad Pro and this is worth mentioning as a key difference. I'm loving the Pixel 3, but this is a complicated sell.

And I say this as a daily Linux user. Windows 10 is currently the best tablet OS on the market, although it's very far from perfect. It just offers the best range of features and flexibiity than it's competitors.

Having a chrome OS on x86(and a very capable one btw) processor is a disadvantage, Ubuntu/Windows is 10x better
You can get ubuntu inside of chrome os
You can probably flash Ubuntu on it as you can with almost any Chromebook.
You can run Linux applications on chrome natively now. As well as Android apps.

Surface pro 6 is awful. I returned mine after a day. The screen is palpably inferior than the iPad Pro. The ambient light sensor is inferior. The touch functionality is poor. The inking experience is far better on the Apple Pencil - there is no parallax.

Google sells a Pixelbook, which is a Chromebook device with a touch screen and a keyboard. Google sells a big tablet that goes with a keyboard case that runs Chrome OS. Performance? The same. Portability? The same. Price? Reasonably the same. This device is completely useless if you ask me. Oh and the Pixelbook has a headphone jack lol.

I like my mac just as much as I like my S8+.
Everybody here's comparing the Surface products to these 2, but the thing for me with the Surface Pro 6 is that it is more of a laptop than a tablet. You will almost always find yourself using it with the Type Cover, it's interface isn't well suited for a tablet orientation nor does it have much of any apps specifically tailored for tablet use. The touch input isn't as good anyways, and the screen has thicc bezels which become really noticeable when using in tablet-mode. And because of all that, sometimes the iconic kick stand just gets in the way.
*Plus, the weight of the product with the type cover (which as I said earlier, you will almost always be using it with) is 1.08 KGs. And, most thin and light laptops with better GPUs weigh around 1.2 KGs, just 120g more. And as in the Surface Laptop itself, it costs 100 bucks less as well.*
It just makes more sense to go for an Ultrabook, traditional, laptop instead of the Surface Pro, or pick up the cheap SURFACE Go, as an alternate computing device.
The only true hybrid 2-in-1 computing devices are the two in the video.
But that begs the question of WHY someone would need a hybrid device...
Well, in short, I think it's because they are more portable and comfortable, and a touchscreen is sometimes a better input method than, say, scrolling a mouse (and more intuitive)
I think the iPad Pro has the _perfect_ hardware, while the Pixel Slate has checked _every_ box in the software department ( and as for the Keyboard cover, I think Google has done a good job, and the pencil definitely goes to Apple).
*So, until those two get combined, i think the 2-in-1 market is never gonna be the future of computing.*
