No kidding. Even if the specs were identical people would have liked it more if it was purely a toyota, at least then youd have the reliability you expect from a Japanese car
This car would never get this much flak if it weren’t named Supra. People wouldn’t even cared too much about the bmw aspect of this car if it were named something else. Toyota simply underestimated just how big their Supra name have gotten. Just like Celica and 86. Good names, missed opportunities.
Well the LFA is a Lexus, not technically a Toyota (despite them really being the same parent company). Also Toyota specifically mentioned that the Supra was stiffer than the LFA.
The BMW components are a problem for some people because one of the reasons they liked the Japanese "supercars" of that era is because they were quintessentially Japanese.
Exactly. I think the downfall of this is the very idea that it's not a Toyota. The whole point of buying a Supra is because of it being a Japanese engineered and built Toyota from the ground up. A potential Supra buyer wasn't going to maybe buy a Z4.
Yep. I mean Japan for the past few decades has also been known for creating long lasting cars. BMW not so much. The fact that such an important car from one of the most reliable car companies consists of many parts from a company that's nowhere near as reliable and robust. It's just such a bummer. People like their Toyotas because they last, new BMWs do not
When Doug reviews the 2021 Supra I hope he mentions that it has a lower compression ratio than the 2020 model. This is a GREAT thing for tuners because it allows much greater boost pressures. Doug says in this video that Toyota was going to release a future model with much more performance potential. The 2021 definitely has much more potential than the 2020 model. I feel bad for everyone that was duped into paying over sticker for the 2020 car.
Almost nobody knows how to shift any more. Out of all 3k graduating seniors in my highschool none of us had a manual car. None of my friends parents knew how to either.
@@briskxd1093 much more than 1% of the sports car market drive manuals. And all of those people won't buy this supra because they don't have that option

@@jdm324xd yeah but people would much rather want a actual japenese car over a rebadged bmw any day of the week, because the supra has a legacy of original jdm designing.
I might be in the minority, but I like how Toyota did the new Supra. I'm not in love with the new styling, but the potential for aftermarket tuning was precisely why the gen 4 is so loved. A bone stock gen 4 supra was nothing to get excited about when it was new. It was the powertrain's almost limitless potential that gave it such a place in history. They would have totally missed the point if they included all of the performance parts they left space for. It's a blank canvas.
Coming back to this after a year... Well, Toyota, how many of these BMWs have you sold? And how many Supras you'd have sold with your own infrastructure (motor, chassis etc.) in them? Toyota: We did a gigantic mistake but we'll never acknowledge it publicly because the project manager and some of the corporate board managers would have to commit suicide if we did. And the second part of your question: a hell of a lot more.
They considered making a Toyota made Supra, but they realise that they couldn't make it, for a reasonable price, and the reason they aren't selling a lot more is because 2020/2021
@@tupaei01 I also have no idea, and I also have no idea how they are going to price it in a good spot without Renault helping, but it's probably because of cheaper materials, and the fact that the engine is an updated VQ. The Toyota I6 that anyone wanted is a completely new engine, and optimizing it to Toyota standards (according to Toyota) would shoot the price up to over 100k. It wasn't going to be an updated engine (unlike the Z), but a new bespoke engine (and from their experience, that is bound to fail)
Maybe Toyota has some existing V6 technology for instance to update the Supra. The future Supra. Living and dreaming... I heard the BMW inline-6 is going away. It's going to be 4 and 3-cyl. hybrids for the Bavarians.

Spoiler alert: Japanese cars are not that great.

Yep. I mean Japan for the past few decades has also been known for creating long lasting cars. BMW not so much.

Ok, but why is Nissan launching its new Z car without Renault or any other partner involved massively in the project? Rhetorical question.
