I'm a child of the 90s and I must admit I missed this one. How idk because back then I was always into music like this. Mean while in 2024 I'm spending days catching up on repeat. Mysteriously beautiful. Wickedly creative. 😘
Back in the nineties I became obsessed with P.J. Harvey. Musically, there is no one quite like her. "Down By The Water" has a creepy, unsettling, almost sinister vibe to it, but is also beautiful, mysterious, and hypnotic. It takes a special talent to get all that into one song. This is what real art looks like.
I couldn't agree more!
all are reasons I love this song and video
When you want some dark hypnotic pure atmosphere in a scene reveal for a horror thriller.
I actually liked some of her stuff back late 90s, and had all but forgotten her until Peaky Blinders took on a lot of her music for the series. Then I was like "Oh wait!! Freaking PJ Harvey?? Totally forgot about her!!"
She's a siren.
One of the most underrated female singers in the modern age.
P.J. and Haley Reinhart!
million percent
Totally agree... If we didn't have PJ i don't think we'd have St Vincent.
I don't know about underrated. If you mean underrated by commercial success then maybe, yes, but anyone that knows anything about music knows and appreciates her.
i fucking hate how people insinuate she ruined nick cave lmao... like nick wasn't fully capable of doing that to himself
This song is forever.
I was singing along to this tonight while watching Yellow Jackets, and received nothing but stares from the three other people in the room. Hadn't heard this in years! It was awesome.
Same!!!
Perfect song for the show. Felt all that teenage angst from way back when.
@@MissVixen77 What's next? I figure there is some Juliana Hatfield coming at some point. I can't embarrass anyone in my house with Juliana because I still play her quite often. She has made fans in my house lol
Same!! Great sound track!
Same here when Natalie's acid kicks in and PJ Harvey's weird beautiful Down By The Water starts. Had to hear the whole song again.
This has always felt like a re-telling of a folk tale
Maybe it is one
I can imagine it being an actual one. I mean the story the lyrics tell are plausible thinking about obscure religious people. I bet children were killed in the same selfish matter like "the daughter" here.
@@corinnae.7877 Wow, never thought of it that way. It's a work of art, with multiple interpretations I think.
@@anastasiamurawski6179 Yes of course. But I mean look at modern cults or even Jonestown. Give weak minded people hope in God and they will fight in every way. Or look at Mormons. I am a Christian but like I only pray that's it. We need to decide how we will live and not follow a fairytale.
@@corinnae.7877 whats the meaning of the song , drowning her daughter?
I’ve seen her live several times and she is in incredible
This song was on the soundtrack for one of the best films in the 90s and still my favorite movie of all time- The Basketball Diaries.
I'm so grateful I'm a Gen Xer!!! I was 16 when this song came out. The music and movies that came out of the 90s are legendary. Especially 1995-1999.
It's amazing how waterproof her makeup is.
That's the message she want to bring over. :)
Maybe it’s Maybelline?
Lol
i can’t believe this came out in 1995… it seems so ahead of its time
God, it's taken me 7hrs to write this...I smoked too much. This video took control of my brain! I was like, "what's happening here!" I was "affected" It is excellence in all dimensions ✌️
my daughter 4yo loves Pj Harvey and also black sabbath i m so proud
Well done 👏👏👏 Hoping you both the best for the future 🤞🌞
Please do your best to keep her away from the garbage that most modern music has become. You and all yours stay classy.
This song has one of the most unique sounds, I've never heard anything like it
Amazing! ❤️
It's either unique or it ain't.
That's right... Beyond the contribution of its producers, we must bear in mind that NOT FOR NOTHING BJÖRK sang a duet with her at some point in the 90s.
Link please mate
That's the genius of Flood. You can hear some of it on his work with NIN - The Downward Spiral
This piece is so haunting and intriguing. Gets stuck in your head forever.
I had that 'little fish big fish swimming in the water' part suddenly stuck in my head and I had to find this song again.
Really I found that I listened to it and turned it off as soon as I heard it
Sheila Da Gig is another good one. I'm probably spelling it wrong. I'm 54 years old and from Canada. I loved shoegaze back in the day and I still do. There is a wonderful TH-camr from Guangzhou China who goes by the name Stella's Encounter. She gets shoegazer, 4AD, and more recent Chinese and German bands who were slightly inspired by that sort of music
I would definitely recommend that channel.
@@randomaccessfemale I think that best explains why we are all here!
Saw her in the naughties in glasgow, she's somethimg else! Shes like a female "Nick Cave" Imo, talented, mysterious and something sinister and mesmerising about them both. ❤
Her & Nick Cave were a thing, actually.
This woman is a musical genius.
I agree
Matthew Rosemier Yeah, super underrated.
Definitely '!
absolutely. no lesser description suffices
she knows it. Patti Smith from an earlier generation Bjork and Amy Winehouse were/are great too.
The world so does not appreciate enough how beautiful and talented this woman is
The world so does not appreciate enough how beautiful your username is

It may be the awkward dancing lol
@@bradovskikransky1833 the world so does not appreciate enough how beautiful his profile photo is

This was my Bunnies favourite song and every time I hear it it tears me apart as all I see if I close my eyes is the most beautiful woman that ever existed singing and dancing to this, thank you PJ you have managed to haunt me forever. R.I.P. Monica Telle the world lost an angel 17.12.2021
This song has such a sinister sound to it
I love it
This song is the kind of song you want to show to other people to make sure they know of its existence ❤
not only is it a great song but the visuals are genius with the water and complementary colors
If I had to Groundhog Day through an entire decade over and over then I think that I would be mighty fine with the 90s.
👍💯
Что это...это завораживает...это не отпускает...
This song is so badass.
Hi
So so true!!
I love it. I miss those days
I fucking love this woman
90s music had so many different sounds of music . Amazing decade of music .
Well yes. 10 years. And different styles. Lol weird comment
PJ Harvey , wu tang clang , primus , rage against the machine , Eminem , cranberries , nirvana ..... It just went on and on 👍
@@annemorgenstern6070 😂
This is one of the most underrated gems of the 1990’s.
What are you talking about? This song charted top 100 billboards in multiple countries lol
How can you say this was underrated in the 90s? It was played hourly for a very long time. That is not underrated. Underrated does not mean the same thing as liking a song. That's like me calling better man by pearl jam one of the most underrated songs in the 90s. I may love the song, and it may not have gotten hourly play time (like this song, which i like, I don't love it) but just because I like a song and its not played in the radio anymore does not mean the song is underrated.
They used to play this on MTV non-stop.
This was not underrated:) I remember them playing it on mtv all the time when it came out
She was one of the headliners of a festival I went to
Never noticed her, really. Sounds kinda lame
when i was in elementary school i remember my 4th grade teacher grew concerned for me and phoned my parents cuz i would always whisper the big fish little fish part....good times lmao......wow as of 2021 3600 likes thanks everyone june 16 2021
can't stop laughing, imagining a little kid whispering it seeming all possessed :"DDDD
LMFAO
LMAO...Hahaha that's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I lost my shit reading that...
Now they really steal kids!
What did you think this song was about? Peace-
I remember my dad playing me this when I was quite little and we were driving home in the dark. It TERRIFIED me. And it's the only song that still gives me anxiety after all these years. There's something hauntingly beautiful about her voice that I will never forget
Creepy sigil magic 🪄
Haha That story is like me and my daughter whom I played army of me by bjork to as a kid so then she tells me years later the video made her scared of dump trucks haha.. But, now, I hear her play bjork to her mates. She's very alternative haha
The lyrics are about drowning her daughter, so you were right to be terrified!
@@judyjohnson630 Actually absolutely not, it's a BS explanation. Harvey herself refuted that ridiculous hypothesis of interpretation. And she didnt have any unilateral interpretation to offer either. She said that even to her the lyrics dont have a precise meaning, and it's up to any listener to hear in it what he wants. Thus it's stupid to claim it would BE about this or that. Some say it's about the loss of virginity, some say it's about a mother killing her daughter for discovering she was not a virgin anymore, and so on. Some people just desperately need sense, when there is not always one.
@@justalonesoul5825 Not true! I am the God of hell fire, and I bring you: FIRE!
I can't get over her beauty
Wow cant get this song outta my head ... 90's v/s 21 hummmmm.... 🤙😘💋💕🤘
Lyrics:
I lost my heart
Under the bridge
To that little girl
So much to me
And now I moan
And now I holler
She'll never know
Just what I found
That blue eyed girl
She said "no more"
That blue eyed girl
Became blue eyed whore
Down by the water
I took her hand
Just like my daughter
I'll see her again
Oh help me Jesus
Come through this storm
I had to lose her
To do her harm
I heard her holler
I heard her moan
My lovely daughter
I took her home
Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water.
Come back here, man, gimme my daughter.
Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water.
Come back here, man, gimme my daughter.
Weird as heck.
What does it mean!?!
@@gobbleswells2883 Always wondered that too. In my mind it's about losing your innocense.
Wtf it mean lol
They used to play this on MTV Europe back in the day.
You know, when MTV actually played music.
Exactly
I am old enough to remember when MTV played actual.
Yeah music television. Should've changed thier name to Reality TV. Funny thing bout so called reality shows, alot of that crap is put on for ratings. People lie, especially in front of cams.
@@loneshewolf3309 From Music TeleVision to Melodrama TeleVision
You know, I find myself wanting a good music video channel..
Yellowjackets used this song perfectly!
Early 90's music was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!
Insomnia and 120 minutes on MTV is how I found this amazing song!! Wait, damn I'm old 🤣🤣
She is so unique and so beautiful. The hard-core musicianship behind her is just an extra little treat
Anorexic more like.
I don’t know why, I’ve been coming back to this song lately
i have also been, i can only guess it depends what rotating phase of complicated grief i'm in from losing my son to a heroin overdose 7 years ago now :(
@@erikwille5614 the song is about losing someone, at least that’s what it sounds like to me. So it makes since.
thank you yellowjackets for introducing me to this song 🙏
I was watching Peaky Blinders , and it said PJ Harvey playing in the subtitles... I had to listen to her music after hearing her sing, now I've been jamming out to all of her music... She rocks !!!
Oh lord -now I need to find which episode was that from!
Also here from the peaky blinders!
@@cassidyho939 season 2 episode 1 when the pub has been blown up right at the beginning. I only know because I've just watched that episode n it brought me here lol
She is actually featured very often on the soundtrack for Peaky Blinders. Almost every episode features one of her songs at least
I love that movie
That bassssss.
Crunchier than sand in your pb&j sandwich.
A love how all her hand movements are in sync with the syncopated percussion and then the plucked violin, like she actually knows her own songs back to front, which these days is rare.
I would hope not so rare. But yeah, I love those bits of the video too.
She writes the songs and produced a lot of her albums. In some albums she even plays multiple instruments (or all but drums for Uh-Huh).
She is massively talented and creative. Writes from the heart and the guts too, lol
No. Not rare to true performers and producers. They know their shit.
I always got the impression she was highlighting the percussion and pizzicato strings for us, they may not have become so iconic in the song without the video. It's easy to say 'I'd have noticed them anyway' but as much? I don't think it's rare at all for singer-songwriters to know their songs back to front, now or ever.
Makes you wonder if she does all all of the audio production too
I'm here from the new show Yellowjackets, I have a feeling I'll be buying it's soundtrack. Great song
Right I thought I was the only one that thought yellow jackets 🐝 soundtrack is worth buying 💕💯
Crucial bass tone.
I think I've been living under a rock. How am I only just hearing about her now. I have some serious catching up to do
Just because time has not come for you to ear.......Now it's time. Don't look bacK Be here and there. ;+)
Same I discovered 3 months ago and I’m going insanely through her discography
PJ Harvey is so talented
I would do anything for her. Absolutely anything
Pj Harvey she is my 90s music crush
This sounds like a collaboration between Trent Reznor and Mark Sandman with PJ Harvey on vocals Love it
im pretty sure flood either provided the sound or trent/flood mixed & produced this album with harvey.
i could be wrong, im pulling from 30+ year old memories
Definitely a remix
Trent Reznor wishes
"Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water
Come back here, man, gimme my daughter"
yeah yellowjackets! bringin it back!
It's asmr
Anna Akhmatova is sextillion times more powerful than Bellatrix Lestrange. Sylvia Plath is more powerful than Bellatrix Lestrange too!!!! Right???
Another PJ Harvey's master piece.
This song still growls and snags you in! Loved every time it came on the radio 📻 🐟🐠🐡
This is one of those songs where I'm half certain that every part of the video is meaningful and every gesture is perfectly selected to convey a definite concept, but it could also be entirely misdirection to keep people interested while they listen to the amazing song behind it. Either way, it's entrancing.
Haunting I still love this song 2023.
I was asleep the first time I heard this song, I woke up just at the end of the song and it scared the hell out of me
I always thought this song is scraing me FROM THE BEGINNING! ;+) PJ is, the lyrics are, the music too...and that's probably why i love this song.....as well as "The Bold marauder" 's Kendra Smith cover.....here: th-cam.com/video/kwvuC-GIIJA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zyfW0ujsRi9XVvRR
Christ PJH is gorgeous and so attractive in this video..
This is the first time i've ever actually SEEN PJ Harvey. She's kinda gorgeous.
SHE IS
She is over the top in this video on purpose: the heavy makeup, the wig, the dress... look at her "Stories from the City..." era until now, that's the current PJ.
She used to be a lot more alternative looking in the early 90's. Beauty is in eye of the beholder. :)
@@redacted2275 I have. I still think she's gorgeous.
Is PJ beautiful? Let's just say she's as beautiful as she wants to be and on this video was very beautiful indeed.
This goes hard
The yellowjackets brought this jam back ❤️
The 90s has so many gems , you just gotta look for them .
The choreography seamlessly blends with both the visuals and the music. Mesmerising genius.
Musically this song is magnificently simple, dark and sensual, only a few instruments and a simple bass line, but absolutely magical.
Poetess and enchantress is absolute synonyms
Hell mustn't exist. God is not tyrant. It used to be a childhood dream.... Bellatrix Lestrange is untalented fraudster
The first time I heard this was on the radio at work. I immediately stopped what I was doing, and called the radio station to find out who it was. Since it was in a block, i had to describe the song to the dj. I just said the little fish big fish song! lol After work, I went straight to the record store and bought the album. I had a ridiculous sound system in my car at the time, and this sounded amazing!
I heard this song in The Basketball Diaries a looooong time ago, and then I just watched Yellowjackets and it was in there too, so it got stuck in my head and I had to look it up.
Hard time before the Internet. How painful it is to hear a song once and not be able to find the name or the names of the performers.
I love the way the whispers sound around the rest of the track. Excellent balance of sound
Expecially when your high 🔥
@@lovedrake9 got me there.
This song came on one day at work, and I froze. Her voice gave me the chills only the first moment of a new song can cause. I wrote it down, and since I've been listening to this on repeat. She's beyond talented.

90's was a great time for music
My first introduction to Miss Harvey. And I have never forgotten her since.
I love the original long, plain, string sequence used as an alternative to a usual ‘guitar break’.
PJ Harvey
I've seen something close to 100 different bands and singers live, I saw PJ Harvey do "This this love?" live and it was Astonishing. Top 5 live performances of all time, better than anything out now.
I've seen her live twice in Toronto, she sounds exactly the same live! Its overwhelming to witness because I grew up listening to her in the 90s and she nails it live !
In Portugal i lived in porto and i know Harvey since the nineties, now i AM in andorra working. The cure,pj Bauhaus,no doubt, etc. Are My favourites in músic.
One of my favourite performers of all time
Love this, this one got my daughter hooked pm harvet
You're perfect ❤
Unique, haunting, beautiful...I remember when this music video premiered on MTV. This song still affects me the same way as when I first experienced it. Musical genius, she is.
To Bring You My Love was released 20 years ago, on the 27th of Feb 1995!!
We are getting old!!!!
Anyway, this shit is still absolutely awesome!
24 now 😭
She was not a thing till 2002
I was 15. The 90s were a great time to be a teen...

I never Forget
Good memory of my children
P.J.HARVEY IS THE PERFECT WOMAN
Said the averge man , hehe
The coolest human ever.
Love ya pj
Shes absolutely GORGEOUS
I first heard this song right after I watched David Lynch’s Mulholland’s drive ! This song and this movie are the perfect match for each other !🎉
My god this is fantastic...PJ we love you more than you know. PS next time your in Worthing or close hook me up.
Back in those 90s, as a teen, I saw this video on MTV, and just found it weird. It didn't make any sense to me, so I forgot about it pretty soon. 25 years on, just vaguely remembering the artist's name, I ventured to find it and watch it again. And boy was I surprised. This is an exquisite, mature, remarkable song and video.
The whispered part gives me the chills. I luckily remembered it so that i could find the song. One of those from the years when I had to be lucky enough to find a few snippets of videos when the channel was available and this was one of those.
I love you. You are just fantastic.
Showtime - Yellowjackets
I loved this song
This seems so ahead of it’s time
You are just so awesome pj Harvey
I never tire of listening to this song (nor to you, PJ). Love from Brazil
Twin Peaks atmosphere, to me.
Thought the same thing.
Pff
I love how everything weird or idiosyncratic is labeled as “Twin Peaks”
It means you’ve done something RIGHT
Ah, I was close! I thought she reminded me of Isabella Rosellini in "Blue Velvet."
The song was featured in the movie "Basketball Diaries", where Leonardo DiCaprio played the role of the late Jim Carroll (you might remember his song "These are the people who died, died ...")
GREAT ! LIKE SIOUXSIE SIOUX !
She's the best
I'm addicted to this video. No cure in sight.
I am about to turn 49.. i haven't listened to this song / album in an age.. funny the things that spark a musical memory; reading Once Upon A River (by Diane Setterfield)- a chapter 'Lily's Nightmare'.. the apparition of a drowned child (possibly) & the image of Jesus' face in the page previous & bam!.. i had to find & listen to this song. Just as amazing & wonderful now as it was then. What amazing artists- Diane & PJ... : )
She's so beautiful and talented
I'm here because of Yellow Jackets! Excellent music!
