@@CristinaTomas-xd6dk Yes, she was influenced by Patti Smith & they can both be as equally controversial. In fact she upset many of the Roman Catholic community with some of the lyrics when this song was released. If they had their way with her she'd be saying 'hail Marys' till her voice croaked!
I've just been getting into PJ's music more lately. The sheer flow of her artistic vision and inspiration never ceases to amaze me. She practically overflows with creativity.
I am bewildered because I "discovered" this music at bare minimum10 years ago. Still relevant and refreshing to listen to in my current life. simply brilliant. timeless
Listened to her stuff 30 years ago...still listening and just now really appreciating how amazing she is/was. SO ahead of her time musically. This is timeless.
@@jaysonwilliams371 I'm pretty sure it's about a bit more than that. I think it's brilliant but I would like to know a bit more about the meaning. Either Harvey's telling of it or other people's personal interpretations.
London Tide has made me a PJ fanatic all over again. I remember playing Is This Desire? on a loop for at least a year in the late nineties and it still sounds as fresh and exciting now as it did then 😮💨
Another great song by PJ. I love this style she puts out as well as her powerful screaming (To Bring You My Love)...the power her lyrics and voice bring to her music is chilling!
I bought the CD of "Is this Desire?" the day it came out in late September 1998. I must have played it a 100 times over the next year, it's an amazing album. A more than worthy follow-up to "To Bring You My Love", which I must have played 200 times over the preceding 3 years.
I’m a huge PJ Harvey friend I have played every album over 100 times I would bet, but is this desire? was One of my albums of 2020 for some reason it came back to me and was on heavy heavy rotation. I probably did listened to it Close to twice a week on average. But I listen to a lot of music.
Dance Hall at Louse Point (1996) was just as great though :) Collaboration with John Parish but to me it's as PJH as can be, in and out! I guess by that time their vision and concept were already very similar, having played together such a long time.
I love late nineties stuff. With almost any band( and yes PJ is a band because I believe she is more than just one person..lol kidding, it is because of all the musicians..) the sound is... enhanced...with that bass turning like a smooth v8 in your BMW or something. Dark and perfect. Wild yet measured. And still with the same amount of spirit. With the turn of the millennia, however, they all seem to have lost focus somewhat(for better or for worse) and venture into new stuff. Thats all good, and in case of PJ Harvey, that brought us some lyrics that ought to be out there among Beauwolf and Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde and George Orwell (Lol, I don't know many poets). But still, that late nineties bass boost is delightful: DM, Garbage, Bjork, Massive Attack..all case in point.
Really? Are we doing this? "Lettuce is one of the best vegetables." W the fuck do you even mean? You can say any mediocre shit with exact same rhetoric. I am surprised how no one has figuratively punched you in the head in these 3 years.
What did you think of her entire catalogue? Have you checked out some of her more alternative work, for example her collaboration with John Parish ‘A Woman A Man Walked By’?
That's because she became more accessible, while Bjork went more experimental, and Tori went more classical. But all three are still putting of good music
I thought I'd hit an Analogy here in the lyrics..... but quite simply PJ is a credit to British Music! You have to go to Dorset to understand! Possibly one the UK's most underrated musician's ever!
Happy 20th anniversary Is This Desire? I remember getting into this absolutely beautiful record about a year ago it's still one of my absolute favourite records the terrible pop and in my opinion grime that dominates the charts theses days may have a short term appeal but it's music like this PJ Harvey that really makes a difference.

This is my favorite Pj's song so far! So full of energy... I'm just starting to know her art
A short song that conveys such a huge amount of depth and emotion with the little time it has. So damn good.
First time I heard this song in 98?
I thought she said "....its a perfect day, at least."
My older sister is called Elisa, which in the English language is equal to "Elise".
I love Polly's entire musical repertoire❤️
We got a lot of great female artists right now. PJ Harvey is one of the reasons we have them. Coolest ever.

That is correct for the first three albums, it was a band. By this time it was just her and guest musicians....
