I played this song at my 8th-grade high school talent show with my flannel shirt and grunge fishnet stockings. I couldn't have been more different from the preppy girls singing songs from the Grease musical. The PA teacher, who was the MC of the show, said I had guts. I didn't win, but I still have guts.

I remember when it came out, and people were shocked. What a departure from her first two albums. They tried to pigeon hole her as a hard rock/ grunge chick, and she answered back with acoustics and strings!!

The bald man in the chair at the beginning is guitarist Joe Gore, who is probably best known for playing guitar for Tom Waits.
Interesting connection: I just watched Nick Cave do Red Right Hand on Jules Holland, and until his vocal comes in the band sounds exactly like 80s Tom Waits.

I remember when I first saw this video/heard this song. My brother and I were sitting around in my room (we only had one computer in the house at the time), and I was watching our local access channel. This song came on, and we both looked at each other with this weird look that was mixed with horror and intrigue. We didn't quite know what to do with this song at first, and for quite sometime, I still didn't know what to make of it. I think what hit home for me with her was when I was going through a serious bad spot in life. I'd always known some of her stuff from the get go, but I remember picking up Rid Of Me and Fugazi's album Repeater. Those albums saved my ass! After that, I found myself able to open up to her music and actually take it in. Thank you, PJ!

@@ThePhantom4516 Yeah the present is objectively always the best time for music because you have the entire history of previous awesome music to listen to as well as getting to experience the joy of finding new amazing sounds influenced by that older music that didn't exist at any time before that.
People commenting stuff like "modern music will never be like this" on Miles Davis videos never appreciate the fact that other awesome bands like Moon Hooch wouldn't exist without his influence, not to mention the fact Miles Davis is actually exposed to modern ears who otherwise might never have heard him through The Roots, Mobb Deep, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Heavy D & The Boyz and many other hip hop acts that sample his music.
Nick Cave & PJ Harvey have become re-popularised through modern media like Peaky Blinders so no doubt their music, which was undoubtedly great and fresh in the 90s, is now also going to continue to influence the next generation of artists likely beyond their lifetimes. Anyone calling modern music bad is just an idiot. This very song was "modern music" in 1994

I met PJ Harvey on the set of Top of the Pops in 1995... we got chatting and I gave her my number and told her to call me... I was 15 and she was was 26. She never called and I was heartbroken

She's feminine and forceful at the same time. Her voice is deep and unique seeing her live more than a few times she's intensely good. Yes, that does look a lot like Nick Cave not bad at all, just saying. He's fantastic live too. The ending always gets me.

This song is sooo much about me and my old boyfriend Billy in the 80's, my one true love! Looking back, I should have gotten pregnant and had his baby.
Why didn’t it work out?
Billy was in High School in the 80's, and I was 23 and immature, but SOOO IN LOVE with him. He was the love of my life! His father wanted him to be the prom king and date the prom queen. I guess Billy thought I wasn't pretty enough. He was an asshole. Also, his father told him since I was going into the acting, that I would be sleeping with directors. SNAP! 30 plus years later I have a pretty good acting career ,(NEVER having slept with director's), and he's probably short and bald by now. A reality show tried to find him for me, years ago, but they couldn't. Looking back, maybe I should have gotten pregnant and had his baby( I took birth control). But then I would have yearned for him forever, like this video. I still yearn for him, but not like if I'd have had his baby.
