  • I explain where objects appear when they are released. There are two main ways to release an object: to throw it and to drop it. When Mario throws an object, it appears at the HOLP + 32 units in the direction Mario's facing. When Mario drops an object, it appears at the HOLP laterally but at Mario's current height. In certain circumstances, an object released out of bounds will appear at Mario's current position due to a failsafe mechanism.

    4:04 Us Heave-Hos aren't good at much, but we are pretty dang skilled at unionizing. That failsafe was a deal-killer. That's also why we're the only ones that have it. You ever see a Skeeter trying to lobby for something? The answer's no, 'cause they always just end up stinging someone.

    Heave Ho was probably built on behavior copied from another enemy that *can* be grabbed. So rather than being more work to put in a failsafe, it becomes more work to take it out

      +Turtles Tortellini Considering both Heave Ho and Chuckya can grab Mario, have the same failsafe properties, and appear in the same level (incidentally Heave Ho's debut, while Chuckya may have been made for TTM first)... That actually makes perfect sense!

      That seems like a good hypothesis. It would make sense if heave ho was copied and modified from chuckya's code, and chuckya has the failsafe. Heave ho and chuckya both have an "anchor object" to assist with grabbing/heaving Mario, so it would make sense for the programmers to do that to avoid having to redo all the code.

      Yeah, but they forgot to take out the grab feature on Heave-Ho for water grabs. So at least there is a use for the failsafe, glitches or no.

    Also, that shape of a halo with a pole going through the middle is nice. The lines centered on all HOLPs denoting where objects can be placed.

      Yes, often I use very particular knowledge to accomplish things in videos, and viewers will be confused. Then they'll ask in the comments, and I'll have to reiterate a simplified response. But my making educational videos, I can just link the video as my response, which is very easy for me and provides a very complete response.

      Is there an a button challenge for donkey knog 64? Maybe if you start on that, the reason of why the game doesn't run without the expansion pack can finally be solved.

      DK64 requires the Expansion Pak due to a memory leak that the developers simply couldn't fix otherwise. The Expansion Pak didn't actually fix the problem, it just gave the game enough memory that running out takes ten hours instead of ten minutes, which while I haven't tried myself I read can be sped up significantly by abusing savestates in emulators, including on the Virtual Console.

    For those who don't know what HOLP is (which I didn't before looking it up):
    "HOLP is an abbreviation for Held Object's Last Position. The HOLP is a location or set of coordinates that is modified when Mario grabs any object (except a Crazed Crate) and is constantly rewritten to the position of Mario's hands. The HOLP stops updating when Mario is not holding anything. When a new object is picked up the HOLP works exactly the same with it as the previous object except it tracks the position of the new object. When an object is thrown it spawns at the HOLP. It faces the same direction Mario is facing and is given velocity towards that direction. If the object is dropped by Mario it spawns at the height of Mario's feet and at the lateral position of the HOLP. It also faces the direction of Mario, but it has no velocity. When Mario is holding his cap in his hand, however, the HOLP does not update. This means that objects can be manipulated to spawn where Mario last held an object without holding his cap in his hand. The default HOLP value is (0,0,0), which is a location near the center of the course. The HOLP is a global variable and is the same in all four save files, even if they are switched. The HOLP does not reset even when Mario switches courses or the player switches save files. The only way to reset the HOLP is if the player resets or turns off the system."

    If I didn't believe you 100%, I'd say these extremely specific exceptions and coincidences in programming are justification for what only SEEMS to be overly complicated exploitation of glitches in the real game, but is actually just the utilization of a mod.
    But I know you're being truthful, and hella entertaining, too! Keep up the good work, mining the heck out of this game, pannenkoek!

    I didn't realize the failsafe was so complicated. I had the HOLP set in-bounds, but when I crouched to release a Bob-Omb clone, it snapped to my position. Idk what was going on, though.

      If you dropped it, then the bob-omb would have appeared at the HOLP laterally but at your current height. So if the position at the HOLP laterally but at your current height is underground, then it would be out of bounds, and trigger the failsafe.

    one thing I dislike about pannekoek is that he sometimes assumes you've seen his videos in order. like how he explained cloning in an old video called "art of cloning", and I didn't know he ever explained it until I saw his "science of cloning" video. Or how here he just assumes you've seen whatever video he has that talks about what a "HOLP" is

    4:04 Perhaps at the point they were programmed in, Heave-Hos were meant to be carried around to solve launching puzzles. If I recall correctly, SM64 was the first Mario game with walljumping so that feature would have been made obsolete with the implementation of walljumps.
    4:17 How in the world did you figure out the Bowser triggers the failsafe? THERE'S a demo video if one was ever needed!

      +mathphysicsnerd nah the more likely scenario is what another commenter suggested: the heave-ho was coded in part by copying code from another enemy. this is extremely common in game and software development; after all, coding something from scratch is a lot more work than copying something that already works and tweaking it.

      My hypothesis is that heave ho was copied and modified from chuckya's code, and chuckya has the failsafe, so it was copied over. Heave ho and chuckya both have an "anchor object" to assist with grabbing/heaving Mario, so it would make sense for the programmers to not redo all the code. And I figured out the Bowser failsafe using hacks.

    I'm curious, how do the WDW water switches work? Are they indavidually programmed to change the water level to a specific height, or to whatever heght they are? Would cloning and utelizing them have any worthwhile application?

      grafimir Gmr despawn a Bob-Omb, grab a Chuckya, drop it off a ledge, get right next to where it'll land, press B 5 or 6 frames before it hits the ground, do some fancy, object slot-manipulating cr*p to hold the first vacant slot, walk far enough for the Bob-Omb to respawn, done.
      Don't worry, there are things that are a lot more complicated than this. (also save states and frame advance will make the process a lot less painful)

      ***** It's a failsafe mechanism, when he's out of bounds the game just kills him because it's not designed to handle him being out of bounds. I doubt there's too much more to it than that. The easiest place to do this is on top of the castle, walk as far into the back right corner as you can, then hang from the ledge and pull yourself up and if you did it right he'll be killed.
