Escaping from Chuckya's Grasp

  • I explain how to escape from chuckya’s grasp. This is a feature that the programmers deliberately put into the game, but they didn’t actually explain anywhere. Consequently, this feature isn’t very well known, and so I figured I’d make a video explaining it in detail.
    Here’s a summary: Chuckya has a counter that starts at 0 when he grabs Mario. Once chuckya starts rotating, we can increase this counter using certain controller inputs. If we manage to increase this counter to 11 before chuckya starts the throw, then we break free. There are two controller inputs that increment the counter, which are (1) pressing A, and (2) moving the control stick from the center (magnitude less than 30) to the outside (magnitude greater than 40). Also, this same feature is available when being grabbed by King Bob-omb.
    Thanks to Peter Fedak for looking into the code and explaining to me exactly how this escape feature works.
    Additional Notes
    (1) I said that chuckya can rotate anywhere from 12 to 41 frames. This is how long chuckya will naturally rotate, but in practice he can rotate slightly more than this. Specifically, if chuckya's next to a wall or out of bounds and his natural rotation would have ended with him facing it, then he’ll deliberately keep rotating until he’s no longer facing it.
    (2) I said that using solely the A button takes 21 frames to break free from chuckya’s grasp. However, we can actually use pause buffering in combination with the A button to escape in 11 in-game frames, which would be 41 total frames. Therefore, it actually would always be possible to escape from chuckya’s grasp using the A button with pause buffering. Note that we can’t use pause buffering to do this with the control stick method, since the corresponding boolean variable doesn’t update during pauses.

    Whats clever about this in terms of the design is that it's meant to facilitate the mad scrambling of the controls a player would naturally do if they were stuck/grabbed. Nintendo saw right into that shit, way back in the 90's. Its incredible when you think about it.

      Andrew Kaser Pannen's videos have shown just how much thought went into this game. It also shows how the developers were only human. A lot of game devs today could learn a lot from these examples.

      Mario 64 has a surprising amount of depth. Certainly more than I ever realized back when I was a kid. I mean, it took Pancake several minutes just to explain how blinking works in this game, for Christ's sake. It's amazing, really.

    I'm going to guess that the reason this isn't explained in the game is because the developers assumed most kids would instinctively mash like crazy when Chuckya grabs them.

      Well there are some interesting details to this game that a lot of other games fail to implement, but the details make games more believable even if it is just about random blinking intervals of characters

    So are there any natural positions in the game we can get the chuckya into where he will never stop spinning around in circles until we escape free using this technique?

      I doubt it. If you have access to chuckyas, the most walls you'll have that close around you at once is 3, if that. And it's not likely you'll be close to Out Of Bounds, and multiple walls. This may not be the case for rom-hacks, but the original game won't have that.

    How is Chuckya's rotation determined?
    I assume it's either something dependent on the RNG when Mario is picked up, or Chucka continues to rotate until the RNG is favorable, like a Bob-Omb's blinking.

    Pannen, would there ever be a possibility of doing yearly/ half a year updates on remaining a presses? since alot of methods in the few youve done (eg methods and courses that demand a presses) are obsolete. (also I loved this video, never knew about this)
