You really should be concentrating on the "why" and not the "how". Where are your clinical trials showing that intermittent fasting has any health benefits? This looks more like an opinion piece. It doesn't guarantee weight loss. It doesn't guarantee lowering of blood sugar (though I get a big blood sugar and insulin spike once I start eating a big meal after a fast).
If Magnesium is so important why do zero breakfast cereals ever fortify it? They sometimes fortify up 100% RDA of various vitamins and minerals but never Magnesium.

@sgraneja, Thanks for posting your comment. I'm very interested in learning about critical Magnesium absorption cofactors. I recently learned about Vit D but your comment is the first I've heard about Active B6 or P5P and Zinc. I will now research those.
@user-xh4ip8kv2s Vit D is not the primary absorption cofactor for magnesium. It's active B6 - also known as P5P / pyridoxal 5 phosphate. In fact, P5P is also the primary absorption cofactor for zinc . P5P is also the key cofactor for bulk of amino acid metabolism. However, magnesium is the primary enzymatic cofactor for vit D metabolism & is required to convert vit D from its inactive form to its active form - a conversion done in liver & kidneys. Vit D, being a fat soluble vitamin, also requires Bile output for assimilation before it can be enzymatically metabolized.
@@sgtaneja I have taken the NOW brand of Magnesium for years, being 63 and participating in Intermittent Fasting, is there a one stop brand I can purchase for best results, absorption, etc? ty for your time & input
After my heart surgery turned out to be not necessary. The doctor said, I think you should be taking more magnesium. It would’ve been nice if he had said that before I had the cardio Cath.
I was getting 3 per month migraines for decades. I started Mg 400 mg in 2009. No more migranes. I was shocked and then angry. All that suffering and doctors not even trying Mg.
Same thing here, and not just migraines, but heart palpitations too. Modern medicine still has to take notice about how depleted of salts and other elements is modern food and modern tap water. These problems will make their way into medicine textbooks in the next years and will be solved by the next generation of doctors. In the meanwhile, we have to keep updating ourselves and try ourselves to understand what can be the origin of our problem. Don't be angry with your doctors because, if he had had the same problem, he wouldn't have found the solution himself.

Dr Fung, I have just found you. I wrote a blog about you. I went on vacation and ate like a Queen, came home…fasted for 70 hours for the first time, only stopped because I developed a cold from travel. Still lost over 10 bs in 12 days. Had gone to intermittent fasting after the 70. I eat mostly carnivore and don’t require much food as a result. Healing my guy then will add back low carb veg. Doctor told me to graze 25 years ago since I was light headed…worst thing he could’ve ever “prescribed.” Been fighting insulin “resistance” for decades packing on ten lbs with each year though I faithful went to a bootcamp gym 3 and 5 days a week and ate low fat…I didn’t know. Never lost a lb that way. But I’m ok now, thanks to you I understand how my body work. You and Dr Sten Eckert I should say!!!!! ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉 No sugar, no cravings. Learned what real hunger is. Even learned it passes while my body feasts on its reserves as nature intended. Bless you Dr Jason. ❤❤❤❤
Well done Beth, I say now , after reading Life In The Fasting Lane , I will control food, instead of food controlling me, it is a mind set it is a mental reset
Glad the Fungster is back giving great advice. I used to eat a lot of processed yuk so was very deficient. I am planning on a 5 day water fast before Xmas so will treat myself to Epsom salt bath. And buy some Mag Glycinate.😊
How do you find out if your magnesium is at appropriate level when bloodwork is not really accurate. Also, which magnesium supplement is best for nighttime sweating?
My magnesium is low (so is my B12) as a lot of my small intestines has been removed due to cancer. But my Dr does not believe in magnesium and gives me heck for taking the tablets.. So I take supplements ‘under cover’. But I’m stuck with him due to the bad state of the Ontario Health care. So thank you so much for this video.
If you're missing small intestine, then you are almost certainly deficient in many more vitamins and minerals as well, starting with your fat soluble vitamins of A, D, E & K. And other vitamins and minerals as well, depending upon which parts of your intestines are missing. These are absorbed in the small intestines at various points. If you're missing absorption sites, then you're unable to absorb all you need. I'm appalled by your doctor's lack of concern, frankly! I take some pretty massive daily doses of vitamins and minerals daily for this very same reason. Without them, I become very ill. (As an example, I take 100,000 IU of Vitamin D every day. Sometimes in summer I can go down to 100K every other day and 50K in the opposite days. Still a lot.) Research Short Gut Syndrome and learn about your malabsorption issues. Then, armed with your new knowledge, appeal to whomever you need to (sorry, I'm in the US, so I'm not sure who or how, but I've known of people who were able to successfully appeal for a change in doctors). I have my blood drawn several times a year (it's a lot - usually 23 vials depending on who's doing the draw - different labs divide the tests up differently). Rely on the doctor to help you read the lab reports at first, but learn about the tests and the individual vitamins/minerals and which levels you might want to be at the max on. I read my own labs because most doctors, unfortunately, just look at the little guide over to the right of the report for items marked too high and too low, but the ranges used are based on "normies" and aren't quite right for someone who malabsorbs. It's important for you to learn about which things are actually toxic if too high. I would suggest being very careful of B6. If you take multivitanins as a backup catch-all and then add a B Complex, you can be overdosing on B6 and end up too high. That's one vitamin you really don't want to do that with. Between putting too much in the multis, it seems to be added to all sorts of foods so it's easy to end up with too much. It seems to be problematic for people with malabsorption and can be very toxic with permanent damage. I haven't checked lately, but as of about a year ago there were no good multivitamins (gummie vitamins are worthless, BTW) available for sale that do not contain B6; however, there IS one B Complex for sale that does NOT contain B6 and that's worked well for me over the years. Just a tip if you find you need to supplement other B vitamins, as well. The alternative is buying and taking individual B vitamins on top of all the pills you're already taking. I wish you much luck! Please don't let this slide. ❤
How about having that doctor do a magnesium blood test, if possible? Until then, how can he be sure if you are deficient in it and need to supplement it or not?
Wow, Dr Fung, it's like you read my mind! I needed to buy a better quality magnesium and needed to do some research... This video is perfect timing! Thank you!
No one ever mentions magnesium bicarbonate. The recipe is all over yt strangely enough. One of the most bioavailable magnesium supplements of all and extremely affordable 👍
Anyone have any idea why he was away for so long? One thing he didn’t get into here was, if you’re going to supplement, what is the recommended amount of milligrams per day we should be taking? The recommended daily allowance is only 400 mg, so should we take half of that and get the rest through food, or take all 400 mg every day? I also wish he had stated what kind of magnesium he prefers. He named three good ones, but which is his favorite? Also, WHEN is the best time of day to take it? I’ve always heard to take it at night because it assists with sleep, but if we’re taking it primarily for heart function, maybe we should spread it out throughout the day? Also, should we take other things in conjunction with it? For instance, I’ve always heard that we should take magnesium and zinc together.
Some ppl take morning n night I take at night to sleep better (1 big dose) Glycinate is best form, doesn’t matter what brand unless at Target or a grocery store buying it lol (don’t buy it there!) Take full amount. There’s no mag in the soil this none in the food
Thank you Dr Jason Fung. I watched a video on people taking Berberine for insulin resistance needing Magnesium and on the second month and can feel the difference.
Thank you so much Dr Fung you are sweetheart very informative and a rare case of online honesty, I appreciate you a lot!! God bless you and I hope you have a great life!!
Magnesium and D3 corrected my lifelong irregularity- though my mag presented as “normal.” It wasn’t until I began to supplement with both that my IBS-C was corrected. (My vitamin D was deficient.)
Costco is a good option for vitamin D3 and magnesium bisglycinate. I purchase jamieson brand for vitamin D3 and webber natural for magnesium bisglycinate and also vitamin K2.
The problem that Dr Fung did not yet discuss is the RDAs, the current RDAs are based on carb eaters or based on animal studies.. what are the RDAs for keto or carnivore eaters?
I really like Dr Fung‘s video, there are so much of useful information and educational material shared by him, it’s unlike many other Dr who shared their knowledge on their TH-cam channel in a superficial way which many of us already knew reading from food/ supplement labels. I'm a plant scientist, and there is no commercial farmer that don't put Mg in his fertilizer solution. Maybe the absorbtion in the plants is not the same as before, but defientilly MgSO4 and MgNO3 is a major part of the most common fertilizers in the market. N, P, K is the most common, because they are the most common in the plants tissue as well. In fact, what you are suggesting, to take supplemental Mg, is the same as to give inorganic fertilizer of Mg to the plants.
My magnesium is low in my last blood work. My blood sugar levels are spiking and lowering lately had to have a emergency appointment with Dr yesterday. Especially bad before period. My dr told me to up my magnesium and upped my bio identical progesterone she isn't ruling out perimenopause. I think 🤔 this was a G_D send confirmation. What I need. Plus stress reduces magnesium too.
I use a magnesium chloride oil brine applied to the skin. It’s therapeutic grade and comes from piping rock. When doing a hair mineral analysis, applying it to the skin, yields better results than taking magnesium orally.
And that’s without applying the brine to where you took your HTMA sample? I only ask because I feel intense sense of calm in the morning after using magnesium oil on my legs at night. Better than the 2g of Mg Glycinate I took.
Dr Fung I was taking magnesium glycinate for a few weeks....about 300 mg per day. I stopped it just by forgetting to take it I guess and my anxiety went through the roof!! The only thing I could figure out that I'd changed was realizing I stopped magnesium glycinate. I took one yesterday and within 30 mins my anxiety was zero. People should be careful with it, take lowest dose.
I would like you to do a video on " How eating a carnivore diet effects yours kidneys?" Since you are a kidney doctor, I would love your insight on this subject.
I am on carnivore diet for 6 years. Asked the question to my nephrologist, his answer “no”, eating meat will not damage your kidneys. My GFR was going down and my family doctor said there was nothing to do, in a few years I may have to go on dialysis. I was 70 at that time. Since going carnivore my GFR first stabilized, then even improved (from 60 to 72). Now I take no medications and I see my doctor only for yearly blood work.
@@artemis6628, Merry Christmas to you. Congratulations for your healing. No meds, this is very motivating for me. How long do I need to be on Carnivore diet to reverse my Parkinson’s and eliminating all my meds? Thanks to advise me.
I wish some doctors would address the fact that some supplements’ dosing often needs to be adjusted up for higher body mass. I take most of my magnesium right before bed to also help with sleep.

Amazing as always. I puchased your book on IF. I have found it beneficial and take mg supplement too. This was awesome. I am WFPB, SOS and still use a lot of mg. I was just thinking today how wonderful magnesium is for stress, a cofactor in metabolic processes. TYVM..❤❤❤

Malate slow release is one of the best, and threonate. Those in combination are excellent.
After my heart surgery turned out to be not necessary. The doctor said, I think you should be taking more magnesium. It would’ve been nice if he had said that before I had the cardio Cath.
It's very easy to understand this Doctor. He explains it so anybody can understand.
Dr Fung is tops!❤
Furthermore, he doesn’t patronise or treat us as stupid!
I got his 📚📖 books ‼️‼️‼️👍

Í have been reading, watching & listening to dozens of Doctors regarding health! Dr. Jason is by far THE BEST! THANK YOU for sharing your important information!
Agreed. I like some of the other providers too but I just have this gut feeling (intuition) that a lot of them are in it for the buck.
For sure when I saw this video on my feed I thought it would be an oldie!!! BUT NO!! It said 8 minutes ago so I immediately click on your video because you put out such helpful content for us folks!!! Thank you thank you!!!
We need more such great and informative videos from you Dr. FUNG!
Thanks Dr Fung, it's good to hear your voice once again.
Excellent and informative video sir. Direct and to the point without trying to sell me something every 3 minutes.
Dr Jason Fong where have you been your subscribers wondering what happened great to see you are back
How long was he MIA?
Dr Fung is so motivating; such a blessing!
Glad the Fungster is back giving great advice.
I used to eat a lot of processed yuk so was very deficient.
I am planning on a 5 day water fast before Xmas so will treat myself to Epsom salt bath. And buy some Mag Glycinate.😊
did he mention what dose?
@@dreamervanroomnope!
I use Celtic salt, it has many forms of magnesium.
Still a lot.)
Research Short Gut Syndrome and learn about your malabsorption issues.
Carnivore diet would be perfect for your situation, reduces inflammation across the body
@@Lucinda_JacksonThank you for this information. I will share this with my friend. Which "Vit D" are you using? Thank you in advance.

Some ppl take morning n night
I take at night to sleep better (1 big dose)
Glycinate is best form, doesn’t matter what brand unless at Target or a grocery store buying it lol (don’t buy it there!)
Take full amount. There’s no mag in the soil this none in the food

Thank you, Dr. Fung. I have been looking for a real source of info on magnesium. I appreciate your educating all of us.👍
You left out that plants have chemicals that prevent the absorption of magnesium and other nutrients. Beef also has magnesium.
I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about how women need to fast differently because of our hormones. I would love love love a video addressing this.

Would you please share the brand that you are using, because I do have the same health conditions as you, thank you 🙏

SO appreciate you, Dr. Fung! 😍
Thank you for this info! Just what Ive been questioning lately!
I'm also doing intermittent fasting, it's wonderful changes in our body
My magnesium is low in my last blood work. My blood sugar levels are spiking and lowering lately had to have a emergency appointment with Dr yesterday. Especially bad before period. My dr told me to up my magnesium and upped my bio identical progesterone she isn't ruling out perimenopause. I think 🤔 this was a G_D send confirmation. What I need. Plus stress reduces magnesium too.
If the vegetable is green it is magnesium rich. Mg is the elemental core of chlorophyl in plants.
Very helpful 🍀
Thank you. Why did Fung only mention legumes and nuts as sources ? (both high in anti-nutrients and thus low bioavailability)
That is true. Dr Amanda Vollmer also says magnesium is best put on the skin
Where can you buy magnesium chloride oil
Dr Fung I was taking magnesium glycinate for a few weeks....about 300 mg per day. I stopped it just by forgetting to take it I guess and my anxiety went through the roof!! The only thing I could figure out that I'd changed was realizing I stopped magnesium glycinate. I took one yesterday and within 30 mins my anxiety was zero. People should be careful with it, take lowest dose.
Wow Dr. Fung is back. Thank you and happy holidays 🎉🎉🎉
I would like you to do a video on " How eating a carnivore diet effects yours kidneys?" Since you are a kidney doctor, I would love your insight on this subject.
I’m Carnivore and have reversed Graves Disease, lost weight gained muscle and feel amazing. My kidneys are perfect 👌🏻
Dr Shawn Baker just did a video on this.

Several months ago, I was told I had to see the new "internist" at my primary care's office. She wanted to put me on insulin injections b/c of a high A1C!!! I told her the previous 6-mos were extremely stressful for me trying to find a place to live that I could afford!!! So she gave me a few weeks "stay-of-execution!"
After watching & reading "Dr. JF's Fasting" protocol mentioned above, latest book, & youtube videos, I was all on board and embarked on this truly phenomenal adventure!!!
Three weeks later when I saw the doc again--SHE WAS IN SHOCK!!! ...and said very excitedly shouted..."I've NEVER EVER had a patient your age [72.5 yo] EVER LOSE weight, let alone 12 lbs.!!! AND have their A1C drop like this!!!" ...My INTERNAL response: Oh really??? Now how about telling them my story [& others' stories] and point them to Dr. Jason Fung and this phenomenal way of fasting/eating/living--to reduce/eliminate need for insulin, stupid diets, etc., etc., etc.?!?!?
BTW...my son/his wife/& 5 kids may not recognize me--they've been away for a month+ b/c I've lost weight [it's been a battle since puberty for me!!!] and at least 2 dress sizes if not more by now!!!

Merry Christmas Jason. Thank you for your great information regarding weight loss, fasting and reversing type 2 diabetes. However, you often speak about weight loss but I have never heard you speak on how exactly we determine our exact maintenance calories for our body weight and bmi. Also I have never heard you discuss bariatric surgery in detail which appears to provide the far superior health outcomes in regards to weight loss and reversing type 2 diabetes. Maybe future videos? Hope you are doing well and thank you for all that you do!
To figure out how many calories to consume to maintain your weight, you need to have your basal metabolic rate tested. Mine was done at the gym, on a special scale.
I suggest that you look back at earlier videos of Dr Fung . He consistently argues against calorie counting , particularly regarding weight loss .
