Consuming high amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids causes damage to the Insulin receptors. I believe this to be the primary cause. I have read that Americans today consume nearly 30 times as much Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. The ideal ratio is 1:1 for Omega 6 and Omega-3. Once the Insulin receptors are damaged, sugar accumulates in the blood and increases the Insulin levels. Along with tests for Fasting Glucose level, it would be a good idea to test for Fasting Insulin. Then we can get an assessment of Insulin Resistance using the HOMA-IR calculator. My HOMA-IR is 2.0 which indicates mild insulin resistance. My HbA1c however is a perfect 5.0% because I eat no table sugar whatsoever. Only 1 tsp of forest honey with powdered black seeds. I also walk 3 miles every dat. An older blood test from 15 years ago shows an HbA1c of 6.9% but I was never treated for diabetes. Conclusion is that I am mildly diabetic, but I have good control over it through diet and exercise. Exercise alone can open alternate pathways to push glucose into the cells without the need for insulin. If I had not ordered the fasting Insulin Test, I would not know that I had Insulin Resistance, even though my numbers were perfect. I do intermittent fasting of nearly 18 hrs. I take high quality vitamins and trace minerals. Especially Vitamin B Complex, Inositol and Choline which really were critical for me as I am mostly vegetarian, except for the two eggs for breakfast. The boost in energy levels were almost instantaneous, and the brain fog was gone. Taking Cod liver oil and Krill oil has raised my Omega 3 Index to more than 11%. One needs to get at least 1gram total in EPA plus DHA. All of the above will also reduce inflammation. HDL.70. Triglycerides are 50. Fructose in HFCS may also be factor, although not in my particular case, because I didn't care for soft drinks. I have weighed as high as 245 lb. nearly 20 years ago. Now my weight is steady between 140-145lb. and I pay no attention to it whatsoever.
Not all fructose is created equal. Fructose in whole, low glycemic load fruits reduce the risk of diabetes because of fiber. " Our findings suggest the presence of heterogeneity in the associations between individual fruit consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes. Greater consumption of specific whole fruits, particularly blueberries, grapes, and apples, is significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas greater consumption of fruit juice is associated with a higher risk." Of course, soft drinks, not good.
@@lizhall2961 What has happened in the past 50 years in America and now elsewhere is the use of High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is a definite NO-NO. Fruits in moderation have always been considered healthy. HFCS can be a contributor to elevated levels of Uric Acid.
Fructose causes insulin resistance? That's the first I've heard this. My mother is on insulin and it's quite effective keeping blood sugar down even though she eats plenty of fruit.
Fasting chafed my life. And I’m doing keto and was 192 pounds to 140 and been doing it for over a year and kept it off and had stage 3 kidney disease and reversed it and had 9 kidney stones removed and gout and now I’m still at 140 and no more kidney stones and my kidney disease is at a stage 1. Fasting and healthy keto changed my life. I now am going to school to be a nurse to help people with my knowledge and share my story and hope to help others. And I only drink water and electrolytes! I also do prolonged fasting/ intermittent fasting as well and I do omad. I do 18/20 hour fast. I feel great less inflammation, my blood pressure is great and I work out 4 times of light excerise. I highly recommend this lifestyle change!
Get that Uric Acid under control if it's still elevated. Levels over 5.5 will Trigger a response where glucose in converted into Fructose [it's an ancient response to winter months coming... it helps PRODUCE FAT & STORE FAT for winter]...the same trigger prepares some animals for hibernation. Makes you really HUNGRY...THEN STORES ALL THE CALORIES AS FAT.
Dr Fung is my hero. I have diabetes. He makes it so simple. I tell everybody I know about doctor Fung. Even the hygienist who cleans my teeth at the dentist. She said I did a great job flossing. I said I don’t floss much, my gums are better because I don’t eat sugar.
as a test you go to many dentists and they purposely won't clean your teeth without doing x rays and then they make up something, from cavities to gum disease and they tell you , you don't floss well, your dentist that you regularly go to already knows you, there is no reason to play the money game. I had this done a few weeks ago , I left the dentist pissed off, with no cleaning. They specialize in crowns, so they wanted to give me two crowns, they made up I had a cavity and the other crown was just in case, it looks like it can help. I had other dentists tell me I had 6 cavities, and my mouth looked horrible, I walked out to another one who I usually go to and said, no cavities but got me with a mouth guard. Sad when this industry is so crooked. If I was the only won, it would be nice.
@@MrFernanrc I empathize with you on the over-billing. My dentist keeps telling me I need some kind of gum surgery because my gums receded. First I was told this was about four years ago. Did not have any gum surgery. I don't notice any problem. Carnivore is taking care of me.
I have done 16/8 fasting for 5 months. Have lost 15 lbs (185-170) and my blood sugar is now in the normal range instead of pre diabetic. I no longer miss breakfast at all. Have also reduced the amount of carbohydrates that I eat at lunch and dinner. I no longer worry about becoming diabetic.
I never miss breakfast and lunch... but substituted light snack, fruit and tea or turmeric milk for dinner. Feel good and hope my Type 2 diabetics reversal has started.
I just want you to know Dr.Fung, that your information has changed my life! I have shed 21.5lbs in 5 weeks and I will never look at food the same way again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You can almost pinpoint the decade when the obesity and Type 2 epidemic began in the US. One man at Coca-cola decided they'd change the formula to use HFCS instead of granulated sugar to save money. It was the beginning of my journey toward obesity and insulin resistance.
@@alexmorgan3435 I think the point being made is that nobody knew it was that unhealthy back then. It was reasonable to assume that it wouldn't be great for you but no one knew how damaging it was at the time. Those who knew didn't let on and as a result a lot of harm was done.
My other half insisted I watch this video because I am a Type 2 diabetic. Very interesting stuff, especially as I have always been told I need to worry about my belly fat. None of the medics involved in my State-sponsored neglect have ever mentioned that a fatty liver is actually more dangerous. In passing, I love the way you are able to break down complex subjects in a way that, as a layman, I can understand without too much brain injury! I really appreciate a presentation that is delivered at a speed which matches the ability of my brain to absorb the new material!
*Not too much sugar, calories, insulin or obesity, but fat causes type 2 diabetes:* High-fat diets lead to intramyocellular lipids that cause insulin resistance: With high-carbohydrate, high-fat meals, not only sugar molecules but also fatty acids enter the bloodstream. The blood sugar level rises, insulin is produced by the beta cells of the pancreas and binds to insulin receptors in order to store the glucose in the muscle cells and thus lower the blood sugar level. In high-fat diets, instead of glucose molecules, fatty acids enter muscle and liver cells (intramyocellular lipids) and produce toxic degradation products and free radicals that impede the functioning of insulin pathways by clogging internal insulin receptors and inhibiting insulin receptor enzymes. The insulin produced by the pancreas then binds to the insulin receptors outside the cells, but nothing happens inside the cells. As a result, glucose accumulates in the blood and it takes much longer to lower blood sugar and insulin levels. If you also have a lot of belly fat, this belly fat is metabolically active and produces pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1, interleukin-6) which also interfere with the insulin receptors outside the cells. Besides that, fat and animal protein also cause beta cell death, and animal protein is responsible for the autoimmune reaction that completely destroys our beta cells. Studies: *Insulin Deficiency and Insulin Inefficiency* It was first found in 1926 and 1927 that fat in the diet affects glucose tolerance, which is why blood glucose levels rise more and fall more slowly after high-fat meals. *DIETARY FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DEXTROSE TOLERANCE TEST* 1927: In the group with the high-fat diet, glucose intolerance skyrocketed. With the same amount of sugar water, they responded with blood glucose levels twice as high. *Intramyocellular lipid concentrations are correlated with insulin sensitivity in humans: a 1H NMR spectroscopy study* The mechanism of how fat causes insulin resistance wasn't known until MRI technology was invented to see what happens in muscles when fat is added to the bloodstream. *Mechanism of free fatty acid-induced insulin resistance in humans* Increased concentration of free fatty acids in plasma was found to cause insulin resistance by inhibiting glucose transport. *Impaired mitochondrial activity in the insulin-resistant offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes* Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is associated with dysregulation of intramyocellular fatty acid metabolism. This increase in intramyocellular lipid content was most likely due to mitochondrial dysfunction. (mitochondrial dysfunction is also caused by fatty diets) *Skeletal intramyocellular lipid metabolism and insulinresistance* Lipids stored in skeletal muscle cells are referred to as intramyocellular lipids (IMCL). Disturbances associated with intramyocellular lipids and their causative factor, circulating free fatty acids in the bloodstream, lead to a toxic state and ultimately to insulin resistance in muscle tissue. *Dietary fat acutely increases glucose concentrations and insulin requirements in patients with type 1 diabetes: implications for carbohydrate-based bolus dose calculation and intensive diabetes management* - Dietary fat acutely increases blood glucose concentrations and insulin requirements. There is a video in which a doctor made himself diabetic in 6 hours by drinking oil and checking his blood on the monitor: *How to Get Diabetes in 6 Hours | Truth Of "Healthy" Oil - Dr. Nick Delgado* Fructose isolate can have a few negative effects, but fruits, carbohydrates and even white sugar don't contain isolated fructose, as a result, they are metabolized differently. Of course, fruits and carbs are healthy, and carbohydrates help to reverse diabetes, that's why vegans have by far the lowest rates of diabetes. Vegans can get diabetes by using oils. Animal products are the main cause of all diseases. Dr. Fung spreads propaganda and misinformation. He has no idea what he is talking about. He has no idea about diabetes. @@VeganDPsiiclox That is the single biggest crock of the sticky brown stuff I have yet read on TH-cam. And, for your information, Dr. Fung is not alone in his thinking. There are many, many specialists in the field who understand the benefits of a fats-based diet. You need to tell my blood monitor it's lying when it reports high blood sugar levels after a carb heavy day. Obviously it isn't slave to the same political ideology as you and just simply reports on what it finds.
@@thomasm1964 Fat-based diets are scam. It's exactly as I said. If diabetics go on a low-fat diet (no animal products, no saturated fat, no oils) for a few weeks, their insulin resistance will go down, and so will their diabetes. This has been proven not only in science, but also in real people. I know a type 1 diabetic and she can confirm that everything from the studies is correct, because she has also tested it herself. Studies: *A Low-Fat Vegan Diet Improves Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in a Randomized Clinical Trial in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes* - Improvements in blood glucose and lipid control in type 2 diabetics were greater with a low-fat, high-carbohydrate vegan diet than with a diet based on American Diabetes Association guidelines. *Vegetarian diets and incidence of diabetes in the Adventist Health Study-2* - The fewer animal products, the less type 2 diabetes. *A low-fat vegan diet and a conventional diabetes diet in the treatment of type 2 diabetes: a randomized, controlled, 74-wk clinical trial* - The vegans had 31% less intramyocellular lipids in their muscle cells than the non-vegans. *Veganism and its relationship with insulin resistance and intramycellular lipid* - 24 vegans vs. 25 omnivores (same gender, age, waist circumference, BMI, body fat, activity level, calorie count): Vegans ate 10% more carbohydrates, yet had lower fasting blood glucose, 30% significantly less intramyocellular lipids, lower systolic blood pressure. Their diet protected beta cells on the pancreas and cardiovascular system. *Higher insulin sensitivity in vegans is not associated with higher mitochondrial density* - Vegans have better insulin sensitivity, less intramyaocellular lipids, lower fasting blood glucose, lower insulin levels and better glucose uptake in cells. *High-carbohydrate, high-fiber diets for insulin-treated men with diabetes mellitus* - Diabetics were fed a high-carbohydrate, high-fiber diet with over 300 grams of carbohydrates and only 18 grams of fat (9% of their calories) per day. The daily insulin dose was lower in each of the 20 patients. Insulin therapy could be discontinued in 11 patients, of whom 9 patients previously had 15-20 units/day and 2 patients had 32 units/day. Fasting blood glucose levels and 3-hour postprandial blood glucose levels were lower in most patients, despite lower insulin doses. Serum cholesterol levels decreased from 206 mg/dl to 147 mg/dl. *Regression of Diabetic Neuropathy with Total Vegetarian (Vegan) Diet* - On a low-fat, high-fiber, plant-based diet, 17 of the 21 patients with type 2 diabetes and systemic distal polyneuropathy experienced complete relief of sharp, burning pain in only 4 to 16 days. Numbness persisted but had improved significantly. The longer patients adhered to the plan, the more relief improved. By day 14, fasting blood glucose levels had decreased by 35% in the 11 patients. Insulin requirements had decreased in half of the patients. Five of them no longer required blood glucose-lowering agents. Weight loss, serum triglycerides and total cholesterol improved. *Effect of rice diet on diabetes mellitus associated with vascular disease* - For the first time in the 1950s, the "Rice Diet" study showed that a plant-based, low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet could reverse diabetic retinopathy. 30% of patients who previously could not read headlines, for example, developed normal vision again. In comparison, our modern medicine can only slow down the progression of the disease, e.g. with medication or laser therapy. ---------- Diabetologists and doctors only learn nonsense about diabetes. They don't learn anything about the causes. They only learn which medications work best to relieve symptoms, same for Dr. Fung. Colin Campbell, Nathan Pritikin, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, Dr. Garth Davis, Jeff Novick, Jeff Nelson (VegSource).
No "oses'" for me for almost 2 years now! 😀 I'm soooo much healthier and better for it. I've lost over 150 lbs, I'm off my blood pressure meds, my osteoarthritis pain is so much better and my asthma is gone. Don't miss it, don't need it, don't want it. " Fruits are overrated." I gave " fruit the boot" too. I'm loving my new life 😍. Thank you Dr Fung!🙏😊
@@yelenasms In general I don't think fruits need to be given up completely, but if that is your goal work towards eating only whole fruits especially berries and only local and in season.
Yebbut simply stating "no oses" for you is NOT the reason you ended up the size and weight of an apartment block is it? The reason you got so fat in the first place is because you ate all sorts of processed foods, high in sugar and carbs on an industrial scale and did no exercise!!! It was your ignorance and gluttony that made you morbidly obese. I do occasionally eat "oses" as you put it, but in moderation however I have never allowed myself to become obese. I have a simple piece of equipment that I use that straight away tells me if I have put on weight. It's called a mirror. I can also tell if my trousers become a little tight around my waist which means I have a couple of fasting days. I have even been known to use my scales from time to time to weigh myself. I just cannot understand how some one allows their weight to balloon by 150lbs/70kgs? I don't even weigh that!!!! I weigh only 145lbs / 66kg. Just can't get my head around people that can let themselves become so fat.
@@yelenasms It's funny how our tastes change. I was soooo addicted to sugar. I used to put it in everything. Now, I don't have any desire for it or really care about it at all. I'll take a steak over a cake any day!😀. Good luck to you and your goals 👍
Thanks Dr.Fung. Fruit was touted as being wonderful. Five a day and all that . But it should only be eaten in season. Not all year round. And whole fruit not canned or juiced or smoothied. Also I dont think you can indulge in it until you lose the surplus pounds. Happy Sunday.
I had a green smoothie for dinner every night. The sweetener was always half a banana or coconut water. It was a complete meal and I lost 55 pounds in 9 months. Don't make blanket statements which are your opinion and try to pass them as facts without any studies to back them up.
That last part something I wish most people on TH-cam with channels would emphasize. Get your blood work together first then indulge every once in awhile by that time your relationship with food will have improved and you won't want to overdue it anymore🤠
@gauravipal9518 of course you lost weight considering you replaced what is typically the largest meal, dinner, with a single smoothie. Plus with the added sweetener being half of a single fruit or some coconut water. It's like you completely misread the final part where they said "indulge", putting half a banana in your smoothie certainly isn't indulging.
That's just not true. Fruit can almost always be eaten fresh - canned fruits, processed fruits, juices - THESE are the bad sources of fructose because you lose all of the fiber that helps your body slowly manage digestion and absorption of the sugars.
As a Custodian (Janitor) it is perfectly clear to me to avoid any added sugar and avoid fructose like the plague - it is very sad that the nutrition break garbage I collect twice a day is full of sugery products on a rare occasion I may see an apple with only one bite mark. I am reading both his books and I highly recommend them
I totally agree! I am a school bus driver so I don't see a lot of what the kiddos get fed EXCEPT during Covid when schools were closed we drove lunches to low income kids who rely on school food to survive. I was SHOCKED by the crap they were feeding them. Sugar in EVERYTHING (probably HFCS, but I didn't check that). The yogurt even was full of fruit and sugar, granola, white bread sandwiches with processed meat & cheese, chips, cookies and snack cakes for dessert and either grapes, a banana or apple (rarely a whole one...usually presliced and packaged which I assume required preservatives) or raisins. Even when they tossed in a small baggie of "healthy" sunflower seeds they were honey-roasted and salted. AND only skim or 2% milk...never whole milk. No wonder obesity and T2 diabetes is becoming so prevalent in our children.

I have been a type 1 diabetic since 1970 and I vividly remember going through a time of using fructose instead of artificial sweeteners! I made ice cream with fructose instead of sucrose. Fortunately I gave this up in a few months. I’m not sure why. It’s just as well. The recent popularity of agave syrup (often 80% fructose) really puzzles me. It’s hyped as being healthful, and sold as an ingredient for homemade cocktails! A double threat for the liver: alcohol and fructose at the same time!
Good presentation but there is a risk in exaggerating the role of fructose compared to total carbohydrate - “carbohydrate” means sugars and starches. The poison is in the dose. Demonizing sugar has the danger of people, like the Harvard School of Public Health giving the impression that all those “healthy” carbs in vegetables are ok which is not true if you are trying to reduce carbohydrates. If you have diabetes, starch is probably worse than sugar - fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion. However, fructose alone (in the absence of dietary glucose) is not safe. We get very little fructose by itself in the diet. Different fruits have different ratios but roughly, fruits are about equal amounts of glucose, fructose and sucrose, or approximately equal amounts of glucose and fructose (since sucrose is 1:1 fructose and glucose). Good advice which I am sure Dr. Fung would agree with is the first plan of attack is to reduce total carbohydrate. In my view, the real risk of sugar is: 1) easy to over-consume, and 2) manufacturers put it in all kinds of things where it doesn’t belong.
To compare high fructose corn syrup and an apple is like comparing apples and oranges. 😂 No need to stay away from a red apple. However avoid pop and added sugars is great advice.
I have a friend who measured her blood sugar level 2 hours after eating mangoes and insisted that the readings were normal and hence mangoes were safe for diabetics 😂😢😅 . You have cleared the popular misconception that fructose is safe as it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. Extremely important information doctor. Request you to talk about this more and more to clear the misconception in people.
That said, it's really ok to eat fruit once in a while. Yes....yes it is. You can't get stupid with it and eat a ton of it every day but it's also ok to eat it once in a while. I actually just ate a mango last night.
There's big difference between pure fructose & those that contain in fruits, fruits are rich in fibers that absorb any sugar & also have micronutriens that benefit for health
@@keithzastrow You are right...if I try thinking deeply about fructose and human beings since the beggining of Prehistoric , I can't understand anything. Why fructose is so dangerous today? Yes it is dangerous because it is our carburant for surviving on the planet, and, for this important reason for us, it is overpowerful. It is very logical, we were frugivores and we ate, exactly like you today, just one or two fruits a day and for this target, we could walk a very long time for a few fruits ....that explains that our ancestors were very well with fructose like you. A French doctor explains very well on the net that we NEED fructose for our muscles but just after eating two fruits, you need absolutely get activity, like our ancestors, walking ,running, working , and so on. So I did to day, after two bananas in my skyr, I walked very very quickly for pushing fructose from liver to muscles. If I shoud have done any activity, my two bananas would have been very bad for my liver. That I have understood from this French doctor. Activity after eating fruits is the best medicine. Greetings from N.A.
This is fabulous presentation, However, fruits have a lot of nutrients ingredients like minerals, vitamins and fibers which are very crucial to our body. So if we think only fructose in a negative way , I don't think we can achieve our healthy and longevity. What I advise here we should eat the best quantity of foods. Also doctor could you provide information of eating food in relation to the dosage as a body needs. I appreciate your service.
Fruits have crucial nutrients, but these nutrients can be obtained without the damaging effects of fructose, from other foods such as meat... except fiber, which may not be crucial after all.

Thank you Doctor Fung, all this I formation is helping me so much. I'm trying to correct a horrible hormone imbalance that keeps my insuline high at all times, I'm determined to do a 40 day water fast . I am on my fourth day and I feel great :) Thank you so much for all you do:)
Isn’t there a difference between fructose found naturally in fruit and the fructose in high-fructose corn syrup? I thought the latter one was much worse.
God bless you, Norma. Cinnamon helps lower blood sugar. I take a supplement called D-Ribose that lowers blood sugar as well. I'm on prescription meds that can cause elevated blood sugar so I try to keep an eye out for different foods and supplements that naturally lower blood sugar. I realize that the sugar is not simply evaporating - that it's going into fat cells somewhere in my body - but it's coming out of my blood stream. Whatever is in these meds that cause elevated blood sugar and however they accomplish that is a problem but I continue to do my 16-hour fasts in an attempt to mitigate the problem.
In 1986, as part of my healthy bodybuilding regime, I switched from table sugar to pure fructose because it was deemed as a more healthy alternative to sucrose, given that it was derived naturally from fruit. I paid three times as much for fructose powder, all because Muscle and Fitness magazine said so.
Yeah, I was in the army based in Germany. Everytime I went home to the UK I used to go to this camping shop in London and bought several jars of the stuff to take back to Germany.
It was popular for a while with advanced bodybuilders using it in combination with insulin to help build lots of muscle mass. However it has fallen out of favor as straight dextrose seems to work just as well and is a bit cheaper and gets into the system faster. I've used both and I must say I find fructose too sweet and dextrose I agree is much better.
I remember the bodybuilding advice back then was you can eat as many carbs as you want as long as you limit fat intake. There was a huge bodybuilder back in that era who claimed he ate 10,000 calories a day mostly in the form of rice. I think his name was Victor Richards, if I remember correctly.
The “Hass” diet (late 1980’s) named for Dr. Hass touted the use of fructose as better than sugar. It was a high carb diet that Martina Narvatarlova, the tennis star, endorsed. And to think my husband and I sacrificed to be able to afford fructose in our tight budget.
I watched this video while eating a nectarine. No doubt high amounts of fructose are unhealthy but Dr. Fung does not provide specifics. There is around 5 to 6 grams of fructose in a nectarine. 100 grams or more is a lot. So I would not cut out fruit completely. Given the nutrition and fiber I would say that is healthy to eat some fruit here and there. Just avoid extremes - in either direction.
I also eat the peels of bananas, oranges, lemons, limes, key limes, nectarines. Lots of coconut shreds, raw local honey. Lots of eggs, some greens like dandelion, parsley, cilantro, lots of good oils, sunflower seeds, shelled, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds. Hamburger meat, lots of onions. Lots of spices and hot peppers. Lots of apple cider vinegar, Cocao Pudding super mix with a lot of stuff in it. No Alcohol. Super mushroom drinks, different teas and a lot of different, so-called healthy supplements and into a mega drink. Including greens. Everybody has something different to say.
Awesome information thank you very much I have had Type 1 diabetes for over 20 years now and I’m now 51 yrs old & gaining weight really only visible in my belly area & for 49 yrs of my life I could always see my stomach muscles until 2 yrs ago so I’m going to correct the issue w/solid info like this 👍🏼
Fructose is metabolis poison. Modern fruit has been designed for high sucrose levels. Any polyphenol benefits are offset by the sucrose poison. Berries are best in moderation.
As someone who suffers from Hyperinsulimia I have to say eating whole foods and complex carbohydrates and limiting my saturated fats has been a game changer. I eat 4 servings of fruit a day and also eat plenty of legumes, sweet potatoes...etc. Since following Doctor Mike and Layne Norton I've seen my fasted insulin drop over the year. We're all different and react differently to foods. The difference between medicine and poison is dosage.
However, there is no comparison between eating whole fruit, with ingesting isolated compounds of fructose! The body metabolises those completely differently.
Fruit sugars are healing. I have been on 100% raw fruit for 5.5 years. I cured psoriasis and arthritis. I body build too. This guy does not understand the human lymphatic system, its real function and purpose.
Hey may I ask, does this mean you only eat fruits? And if yes do you also eat them in different "forms" like smoothie, pureed? Iam just interested in your experience! I also eat a lot of fruits@@Insp.CountMortisWinshipKlaw
I am 62 yo and grew up believing that fruit was a healthy food. Later in life I suffered very painful IBS and simply refused to believe, for a very long time, that the friut could be the culprit. I have had to unlearn so much about food and nutrition that was drummed into me when young. Thank you Dr Fung x
I've been on 16:8 (initially 18:6) for about 7 months and i have lost 10kgs. The thing I love about this diet is that it doesn't feel like I am on a diet. It just feels natural. I use to hate eating greens but now my body craves Salads and greens. I dont know if this is due to IF or something else. I also eat a lot more fruit to counter any sugar cravings. Finally after the initial couple of weeks, IF becomes very easy. You dont feels the hunger in the same way. I mean you feel it but it doesnt stop you from focussing on your normal life. I found Dr Fungs videos very helpful in my IF journey.
Such a clear presentation, thank you Dr Fung. In fact, it explains how ancestrally. eating fruit when mature on the trees, really did help to fatten us up for the winter when food would have been more scarce. Trouble is, now it's available all year round and just compounds the problem of insulin resistance.
Exactly right - fat storage is a survival mechanism. I recently went on a 15 day water only fast, so my body was burning its own stored fat/energy which also has water built in. When people talk about everything in moderation, ask them when was the last time they went a week without food.
@@tserevenad I’m ketovore mostly and my taste for sweet things has faded away. I do however keep my options open so that on special occasions, I give myself permission to indulge😊
Yes when GI tables first came out I thought ' great fructose has a zero score - a solution for the. sweet tooth problem ' . Sadly not the case . Fructose metabolism is obviously an evolutionary adaptation to allow us to gorge on fruit in autumn prior to hibernation or winter austerity .
This is an eye opener but is a little confusing. I was under the impression that fruits are healthy carbohydrates but still one has to watch the portions and take fruits with low glycemic index. ( limited portions of fruits such as blueberries , strawberries , apples, oranges and guava).I thought they were more healthy carbohydrates than rice or wheat.( considering that they are natual carbohydrates and not processed at all). Dr.Jason Fung, you are an authority on managing diabetes with proper diet. It will be very helpful to me if you can throw light on what fruits and what quantity can be safely consumed by diabetics. I will be grateful for your reply. I live in India and would love to have online consultation with you, Dr Jason Fung. Regards Sundar R
So, what is the guideline regarding _eating_ fruits to avoid the conversion into fat and triglycerides? Could I eat a piece of fruit daily? Should it be taken well away from meals?
Not hundreds of years. Maybe a hundred years, and not in the quantities seen today. Also, prior to the invention of pharmaceuticals, many people consumed nutrient dense protective foods like cod liver oil and organ meats. Carbohydrate metabolism is very nutrient demanding, so high carbs in the presence of poor nutrient status is especially destructive. Pharmaceuticals, even OTC, contribute to poor nutrient status by depleting essential nutrients - see Dr. Chandler Marrs on pharmaceuticals and nutrient depletion.
wheat has little, if any, fructose. fruit has fructose and glucose. It also has fiber. A Mars bar has 0 fiber, and a Coke has 0 fiber. Fiber envelopes the sugars and passes them right through the digestion system, so it won't damage the liver.
I am not diabetic or even pre- however I have adopted a WOE focusing on overall reduction of glucose/insulin swings so seems fruit, as I do, be greatly restricted regardless of your health status.
glucose is basically essential for energy production, our body can't work without. and insulin is meant to be produced to initialize the energy production/store process.
This video is so timely because I just started adding some blueberries into my low carb diet because they didn't raise someone's blood glucose on another TH-cam video.
Bs. Fruits are an awesome breakfast as long as you are active. I’ve been drinking fruit smoothies every morning for decades and my weight remains constant all year long.
It is fear mongering, uneducated, garbage that fruit causes insulin resistance! Natural sugars in fruit, as nature intended, are not the problem, but the refined sugars in ultra processed foods that is the real cause of insulin resistance.
This video is not about if you are active or not. It is strictly about scientific studies, research, and exactly what the difference between glucose and fructose. Just as you say "as long as you are active", I can easily counter and say that most people, or at least Americans since that's where I'm from, are not active so this information will be especially important for them. Lastly and hopefully, you make your own fruit smoothies with no added table/processed sugar. Smoothies bought from restaurants usually have alot of added sugar.
The thing with fruits is that the dose of fructose would be low enough...if there were just some fruits. But how many people only eat fruits without adding a multitude of other sugars on top? Sugary cereals, sodas, chocolate etc, it quickly becomes too much for the liver to process comfortably.
I agree. He seems to be demonizing fruits the way eggs were decades ago. It's not the fruits alone, but the fact that many supplement it with these processed HFCS, refined car carbs, and UPF @@Leonhart_93
Sooooo sick of how as humans we have distorted food and its consumption to the point where we have to be taught to not eat this or that. It seems it is a distant fantasy to be able to just eat what is ideal for your body without weighing, counting, avoiding, craving, gaining weight, etc. Not one single animal in the wild has to deal with this nonsense.
Not a single animal creates processed food. Animals, not domesticated, eat what is in season, including bears which gorge on berries in the fall in order to get fat.
Diet sodapop can be just as bad, or worse. Artificial sweeteners can spike insulin and they are excitotoxins that cause neurological damage. And natural sweeteners, the "tols" can cause intestinal distress for some people. E.g. xylitol, sorbitol. And of course, the fructose in fruit juice can contribute to fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome. If possible, the best choice is to get out of the habit of drinking sweet beverages.
I just got blasted last week in comments on another channel for explaining this to someone. The thread was about insulin resistance and T2D and she was boasting that she had it all figured out. She said she avoided all other sugar and was careful to watch that intake, but that since fruit was so healthy with all the vitamins, etc, she never limited her intake of fruit and, even worse, fruit juice. And this was in the context of giving advice to someone newly diagnosed with T2D and who had a significant amount of weight to lose! And after declaring that it was impossible to reverse T2D. I politely explained to her how fructose is broken down in the body, and the high points of the info in this video and she went ballistic. Evidently, she has little understanding of how the body works and even less interest in finding out. Ordinarily I’m okay with someone choosing to be stubbornly stupid because I hope they secretly look it up later and see the truth. But she was giving all of this incorrect information designed to keep the poor woman she was advising fat and sick. I know it’s not her fault - she probably got her info from the ADA. But I did point the woman seeking info to this channel and recommended the books The Diabetes Code, Diabetes Type 2 Healing Code, and The Obesity Code. This video was just in time for her!
I quit sugar and wheat products for about 8 months and I lost 52 lbs and successfully reversed my pre diabetes condition. There is no doubt that sugar or excessive carbs consumption is the key to numerous health conditions and hormonal imbalances. Quit carbs, live healthy.
I have severe rheumatoid arthritis psoriasis and I have osteoarthritis I quit all sugar products and eat mainly meat and a few veg and my rheumatoid Factor ain't even showing up now and I'm off all meds so I know it works
I don't understand how fruit and soda can both be equally bad for you? Top foods high in fructose are sodas, fast food burger, salad dressing, sweetened fruit yogurt, apple pie, dried fruit, and honey. There has to be a difference between these processed foods and fruit.
I agree. I've never seen anybody get fat eating bananas or oranges. If you only eat protein and vegetables your always tired. I've done it and it sucks.
@@8secondjokes Eating animal protein and some vegetables will only make someone tired if they´re eating low fat. It´s the fat or glucose in the diet that gives us energy. Either you´re a fat burner for energy or a glucose burner for energy. If you eat a lot of glucose in fruits, vegetables, grains, starches, you will be a glucose burner and your energy levels with fluctuate throughout the day, but if you eat very low or zero carb, you are a fat burner and if you eat enough healthy fat, you will have steady energy throughout the day..
My dad, who is a doctor, is also diabetic. He LOVES fruit, and has always thought it was healthy. It's very easy to look up which fruits have high fructose/low glucose, like bananas and apples, vs. high glucose/low fructose fruits like berries and melons. Of course he was skeptical because those high glucose fruits do make your blood glucose levels go up. I showed him this video and it convinced him that, when he eats fruit, he needs to go for high glucose/low fructose. It's been a good switch. I'm not sure why, but, aside from grapes, it seems like the lower a fruit grows to the ground, the less fructose it has. Tree fruits seem to all be on the high end, while most melons and berries are low. Not cherries though.
Diabetes is caused by fatty diets. Fat leads to intramyocellular lipids that are the leading cause of insulin resistance. The more fat and the less carbohydrates you eat, the higher your blood sugar level rises and the longer it takes for the sugar to be stored in the muscle cells. The more carbohydrates and less fat you eat, the lower the blood sugar level remains and the faster the sugar is stored in the muscle cells. This machanism is confirmed by a type 1 diabetic I know. Fat and animal protein also cause beta cell death, and animal protein is responsible for the autoimmune reaction that completely destroys our beta cells. With high-fat diets, instead of glucose molecules, the fatty acids go into the muscle cells (intramyocellular lipids) and produce toxic degradation products and free radicals that block the signaling pathway and make it difficult for the insulin pathways to function because everything gets too sticky. Insulin gets paralyzed and can't work properly. So you *can't* develop diabetes with a low fat diet full of sugar and carbs. You develop type 2 diabetes if you don't treat insulin resistance. A high fat diet, a keto diet, a carnivore diet causes insulin resistance and diabetes. I will only go into insulin resistance now, even though I have several studies for all my other claims as well. Studies: *Insulin Deficiency and Insulin Inefficiency* - It was first found in 1926 and 1927 that fat in the diet affects glucose tolerance, which is why blood glucose levels rise more and fall more slowly after high-fat meals. *DIETARY FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DEXTROSE TOLERANCE TEST* - 1927: In the group with the high-fat diet, glucose intolerance skyrocketed. I looked into the fructose studies almost a decade back. Almost or all of them proved negative effect of fructose when consumed above balanced daily energy requirement and usually in a form of drink on one go, overwhelming the metabolism (which was the aim to study the effect of fructose). High consumers had adverse effects, but in moderate consumption its negative effect didn't show up. And in sports it was found to be even more beneficial to provide extra energy, due to fructose having its own transport protein in our gut, so more sugar provided to the body. Some of fructose is converted into glucose in liver, so it isn't as clear cut as you say that it is turned into fat. People shouldn't be afraid to eat their fruits, but gulping litres of soda each day is not right. Those will see negative effect. Plus, the majority of HFCS in sweetened drinks is very similar to sucrose from beet or cane: 55% fructose with 45% glucose in HFCS. Only a few products have truly a high fructose content, up to 90%.
One would say that zero grams of fructose per day is ideal for loosing weight and for health, but it happens that almost every vegetable green has a little bit of free fructose and some sucrose -which has 50% fructose in it-. So, what's the maximum amount of fructose that could be considered healthy? In my current natural plant-based diet, 2100 calories per day, eating only vegetable greens, organic eggs, salt and some spices, some tubbers like potatoes, and with little to no meat or fruits, my daily intake is almost always above 15 grams and below 25 g of total fructose (free fructose plus fructose in sucrose) per day. In case this information is useful to anyone. Cheers.
I love you from the bottom of my heart, Dr Fung. Your books and advice cured my obseity and my mom's as well. But for the love of God, what is this haircut? 😅 Thanks for everything you do! Much love from Brazil
I've been low carb/keto for several years now with great success thanks to people like Dr. Fung. This summer while on vacation in Western Canada I decided to indulge in lots of fresh fruit, something I don't normally eat. I ate a lot of peaches, cherries, blackberries, mangos and more. I was curious as to what would happen with my energy levels, how I felt, weight gain, bowel movements etc. A funny thing happened. It resolved my 30+ year battle with constipation. When I was grossly overweight 25 years ago I had hemorrhoids. Switching to a plant based/whole foods diet 20 years ago and I was still constipated regularly eating 25-50g of fibre/day but no more hemorrhoids. Keto/LC was the same except the bowel movements were smaller and less frequent due to much lower fibre intake. But like magic, when I continued eating my same low carb diet but adding fresh fruit a couple of times a day I started having regular, soft bowel movements. I'm back from vacation and continuing to eat fresh peaches and apples as they are in season now and the results are the same. My conclusion is pretty basic. No amount of grain or vegetable fibre intake helps me with bowel movements. Only the addition of fruit does. Quite a dilemma. The experiment continues.
I have been keto for two years, mainly focusing on good fats and nut based diet. No fruit whatsoever. Ground flax seed is my go-to. I bake ground flax seed & almond flour muffins. They have mct oil as well. I am way more regular than I ever was in my life. I have lost 125 lbs with my keto fasting lifestyle and have maintained now for 4 months! Fibre is key to keto 😊
@@nancyscott5340 - Careful with the flax seed. I was consuming 2 tbsps several days per week and it almost put me into early menopause. I cut it off completely and it took 2 months to go back to my clockwork cycles. It is full of phytoestrogens after all.
You need to eat a ton of fruits to get the side effect... Fruits with 10g or less of sugar even daily is negligible, unless you're a diabetic... Just a little exercise will help
I wish that I had known about this. I, too, believed that since fruit is natural it’s healthier. I could eat a whole melon or 2 apples a day n a pound of cherries in 1 sitting. I love fruit and it’s been a little difficult giving it up, but I eat it so infrequently now. I could never figure out why my A1C wasn’t getting any better because I was eating ‘healthy’ food.
Ikr... My sister is Vegan and she always has alot of fruit, smoothie bowls, "nice cream" and different little "treats" made with fruits & stuff. She's always telling me that "It's so healthy for you cuz it's whole foods that are so calorie dense!" 🙄

The latest research suggests that a limit per meal is more important than a limit per day. Why? Because small amounts of fructose are converted almost completely into Glucose by the small intestine. So up to about 3 g of fructose (or 6 g of table suger) per meal seems to have no signifcant negative impact on health (Jang et al, 2018, doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2017.12.016)

I take lots of fruits in breakfast, is it possible to publish a list of fruits ranking on their fructose content so we can choose from them for the healthy fibre intake?
So you have fruit for breakfast, then a lunch, no dinner? Suggest you skip fruits and have no breakfast at all. Just lunch and maybe a light dinner followed with a digestuve walk. You will loose kgs and feel better.

Hey how’s it going? Love your videos and the content they provide others. Truly life saving stuff. One of your videos you reference calories in and calories out regardless of fasting. I’m another video you reference the body not being able to tell exactly how many calories you take in. So you said to just eat until you’re full then fast. Can you shed more light on that specifically because it sounds a little contradicting but maybe I’m not taking in the information correctly.
Yes, Dr. Fung is suggesting not to eat fruit, because of fructose. Some people may be able to eat moderate amounts of fruit and remain in good health, but for type 2 diabetics, those with fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, or any other manifestation of insulin resistance, it may be healthiest to avoid fruit altogether.
How can we source the glucose and how much and how often for the blood glucose levels and glycogen levels that are optimize health? Ideally, avoiding fructose.
Other TH-cam experts have indicated that eating a single apple or 1 cup of lower fructose berries (raspberries, blackberries) each day is healthy. You might get a short-term insulin spike, but it will disappear quickly if the quantity of fruit is small and you consume it after a high-protein meal. I am confused about this information. Is there some middle-ground?
Don't stress. You listen to this nonsense for too long and you'll end up with an ED. Eat a damn apple, eat lots of them. It's all CICO at the end of the day. Nobody got obese choosing apples over candy bars.
Eating even a small quantity of fruit can reactivate sugar cravings in some people. For some people it's more healthful in the long run to avoid fruit entirely. There's not a one-size-fits-all answer, but if you're a person who has suffered from insulin resistance, you're going to be much better off avoiding all foods that cause a short-term insulin spike, even a single apple. Do some people maintain good health eating an apple a day? ... of course! That doesn't mean everyone can do it.
What causes Insulin Resistance?- th-cam.com/video/CRzPdhO6HOM/w-d-xo.html
Saturated fat consumption, obesity, disturbed circadian rhythm are a few contributors.

What has happened in the past 50 years in America and now elsewhere is the use of High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is a definite NO-NO. Fruits in moderation have always been considered healthy.

*Not too much sugar, calories, insulin or obesity, but fat causes type 2 diabetes:*
High-fat diets lead to intramyocellular lipids that cause insulin resistance: With high-carbohydrate, high-fat meals, not only sugar molecules but also fatty acids enter the bloodstream.

Fruit was touted as being wonderful. Five a day and all that .
But it should only be eaten in season. Not all year round.
And whole fruit not canned or juiced or smoothied.
Also I dont think you can indulge in it until you lose the surplus pounds.
Happy Sunday.
That's pretty much it, in a nutshell, imo.
The information I gleaned from Dr. Fung's first two books changed my life. Thank You!!!!!
Happy Sunday, Dr. Fung. Stay healthy 🤍😊😍
As a Custodian (Janitor) it is perfectly clear to me to avoid any added sugar and avoid fructose like the plague - it is very sad that the nutrition break garbage I collect twice a day is full of sugery products on a rare occasion I may see an apple with only one bite mark.

So true
In my view, the real risk of sugar is: 1) easy to over-consume, and 2) manufacturers put it in all kinds of things where it doesn’t belong.
but in table sugar and hfcs you still have dietary glucose, right?
So under what circumanstances do you get "unsafe" fructose as you call it?
It is interesting to note that all fruit, even organic (unless wildcrafted) is hybridized.
True.
Very False
To compare high fructose corn syrup and an apple is like comparing apples and oranges. 😂 No need to stay away from a red apple. However avoid pop and added sugars is great advice.

I reversed my severe insulin resistance removing all refined sugar from my diet. Instead of refined sugar I ate fruit every night instead.
Didn’t fruit spike your sugar?
Thank you Dr. Fung. Very informative about different sugars.
Agreed! Fruit has decent water content too. I believe moderate amounts are great for health.

So, what is the guideline regarding _eating_ fruits to avoid the conversion into fat and triglycerides? Could I eat a piece of fruit daily? Should it be taken well away from meals?
How have ppl been eating refinded carbs like sugar & wheat for hundreds of years yet obesity didn’t become an epidemic until 1960s? 🤔
Hundreds of years is nothing. And it’s the extra processing of grains.
Read to kill a mocking bird. Even 100 years ago sugar wasn’t very available
HFCS and seed oils.
We now use GMO grains treated with pesticides and there are a ton of chemical food additives in most of the North American foods.

Dr Jason Fung is an institution 👏
Thank you so much for your work and for your very easily accessible information!
Huh? Watermelon, strawberries, and blackberries have high fructose, honeydew, cantaloupe, and blueberries have low fructose.
Fruits are diabetes friendly just look at the science

Studies:
*Insulin Deficiency and Insulin Inefficiency* - It was first found in 1926 and 1927 that fat in the diet affects glucose tolerance, which is why blood glucose levels rise more and fall more slowly after high-fat meals.
*DIETARY FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DEXTROSE TOLERANCE TEST* - 1927: In the group with the high-fat diet, glucose intolerance skyrocketed. With the same amount of sugar water, they responded with blood glucose levels twice as high.
*Intramyocellular lipid concentrations are correlated with insulin sensitivity in humans: a 1H NMR spectroscopy study* - The mechanism of how fat causes insulin resistance wasn't known until MRI technology was invented to see what happens in muscles when fat is added to the bloodstream.
*Mechanism of free fatty acid-induced insulin resistance in humans* - Increased concentration of free fatty acids in plasma was found to cause insulin resistance by inhibiting glucose transport.
*Impaired mitochondrial activity in the insulin-resistant offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes* - Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is associated with dysregulation of intramyocellular fatty acid metabolism. This increase in intramyocellular lipid content was most likely due to mitochondrial dysfunction. (mitochondrial dysfunction is also caused by fatty diets)
*Skeletal intramyocellular lipid metabolism and insulinresistance* - Lipids stored in skeletal muscle cells are referred to as intramyocellular lipids (IMCL).
Nick Delgado*
Fructose isolate can have a few negative effects, but fruits, carbohydrates and even white sugar don't contain isolated fructose, as a result, they are metabolized differently. Of course, fruits and carbs are healthy, and carbohydrates help to reverse diabetes, that's why vegans have by far the lowest rates of diabetes. Vegans can get diabetes by using oils and animal products are the main cause of all diseases. Dr. Fung spreads propaganda and misinformation. He has no idea what he is talking about. He has no idea about diabetes. He has no idea about the science of diabetes. Everything he says is the same that all other carnist doctors say, who only represent what the industries claim. Carnism video: *The Secret Reason We Eat Meat - Dr. Melanie Joy*
Cheers.
Very interesting .thankyou .
Good to know .
I love you from the bottom of my heart, Dr Fung. Your books and advice cured my obseity and my mom's as well. But for the love of God, what is this haircut? 😅
Thanks for everything you do! Much love from Brazil
so which fruits do we need to avoid? which ones are high in fructose?
Best fruits to eat are berries.
Fatty meat will do it without burdening your liver.
Fibre is key to keto 😊
maybe you can eat low sugar fruit, like kiwi, strawberries, lemon.
Dr. Fung thank you for this explanation.
That why they call it natures candy. You can see the downside in places where acess to fruit all year: carribean, hawaii.
My cardiologist and PCP are both fans of functional medicine. I lucked out.

My sister is Vegan and she always has alot of fruit, smoothie bowls, "nice cream" and different little "treats" made with fruits & stuff. She's always telling me that "It's so healthy for you cuz it's whole foods that are so calorie dense!" 🙄

Jason, thanks for the info! Btw love the style today 👍
Show me a SINGLE, long-term fruitarian that's obese and/or has insulin resistance and I'll consider believing this information.
They can't ,seems impossible if you are active .
Show me one with any scrap of muscle mass. Muscle mass is by far the most important health marker.
And many people have gained weight trying fruititarian diets. The influencers fail to reveal the amount of exercise they must do every day to offset the blood sugar spikes their diet causes.
I think it’s intentionally misleading. Although he doesn’t say nor mean fruits he’s ok with allowing people to infer that.

Do you recommend a maximum amount of fructose grams from fruit sources per day? I often choose fruits as my main daily source of CHO.
I am 66 M from India, highly influenced by your IF suggestions for T2D. Am on IF and no carb and sugar for last 2 years still my A1C stays at 7.8.
@@janclierinck I am 166cm and 51kg so no issue with weight. Walk and jog for 6 -7km alternate days. Have two eggs boiled or scrambled in BF and some pulses after fruits. Fish/chicken/meat, green leaves, vegetables, and lentils/ pulses for lunch and no dinner. I feel very hungry in the morning.
how do you improve fatty liver? Fasting?
Yes, 72+ h fasts take it down very quickly
Thank You God Bless!
Dr what about sweet potatoes .
Can you talk about why some people stall even with 2-3 day fasts
eat more protein when you do eat, do resistance training
So you can't eat anything, not even fruits. Thank doctor
I've been living on 100% raw fruit for 5.5 years. Cured psoriasis and arthritis. I body build too. Humans are frugivores. Don't listen to his garbage
Hi Dr Jason, does this mean we should not eat fruits?
hey doc, you didn't say the word 'fruit' --- until the very end. Are you telling us NOT to eat 'fruit' because of fructose?
Jason… can you tell us what a perfect meal would look like?
Thank you for the information
