    Good video thanks Nick. Like all things there are good and bad things with technology. Manufacturers need to come up with a plan of achieving 500km or more on a single charge that will allow you to get back home. Unfortunately not all charging point are in a prime location where you can wonder off for a coffee while you wait. Plus what are you going to do when its pissing down rain and who wants to sit in a cold car for an hour while your itching to get home to a dry warm fireplace waiting for the car to charge up. Until car makers work out a longer distance the disadvantage out weigh the advantages and the added costs and inconvenience doesn’t help make a sale either.

    Actually, Instavolt do not require an app - you just use your credit card. Also, all new Gridserve installed Ecotricity chargers no longer use an app - again you just pay by credit card at the device.
    There are other chargers where you can pay by credit card, or use an app to pay a reduced price - BP Pulse rapid chargers are like this

    • @npoleary

      Hey Laurie, absolutely, the discounted rates are a must in some cases as it can be quite expensive if you’re not registered!

      @@npolearyin July 2019 the UK Government stated that all new charging units should be contactless payment by credit or debit card by Spring 2020. • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John, I wouldn’t know the company’s involved I don’t have a list, I only make videos here on TH-cam.
      If you’re after a list, head over to ZapMap (either web or App) and when browsing the map you can see which charge points offer contactless.
      It would be amazing if they did, it would certainly make life easier!

    • @johnharvey1786
      @johnharvey1786 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@npoleary I do use Zap maps and the Gridserve website and I know there are many charging stations that use contactless. My concern is when you use comments such as requiring multiple apps to use charging units this puts off prospective EV users. This multiple app required to charge misinformation was in the Daily Mails hit piece on EV’s last week. Someone actually said to me over the weekend this is putting him off getting an EV. This is why the truth on this is so important. If there are various lower price offers available by using certain apps that’s fine as long as the message is clear that you don’t require them to charge at lots of units and this number is growing all the time.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ian, this is the way it is at the moment with apps. Yes there’s more effort on that side of things but the UK government are looking at long term solutions to make the process easier.
      It’s a work in progress and Mercedes me Charge is definitely a step in the right direction.
      I’ve heard the new EQS will offer technology that will allow you to plug in and the chargepoint will know who you are and charge your account accordingly without any other interaction.
      Now that sounds cool, can you imagine that, fuelling at a fuel station and the fuel pump knows your car when you put the nozzle in? That will definitely be easier!

    • @npoleary

      Ah no the Mercedes me Charge service is access to use this service. It’s a service to combine some of the main charging providers in the UK, under one app so it makes them easier to use and utilise one payment method.
      It won’t with every single public charger but the main providers.

      The tariffs have actually been introduced and changed since I made this so I might make another video in the future if I get a few requests. Handily I found the latest tariffs are in Mercedes eBrochures for the model in question.
      Yes they are good value for money IF you do a lot of public charging and the public charging you’re doing is one of the compatible Mercedes me Chargers. So in a nutshell if you’re going to be relying on DC charging for an EV then yes.
      If you’re not, stick with off-peak charging at home as that will always be cheaper than public charging even with tariffs.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey MS SM, it honestly depends on the price of the charge point. Just like fuel stations, they’re all different so it depends on the one you visit 🤓
      It’s very easy to work out, take the battery size of the car and times it by the pence per kWh.
      In this example it was 23p per kWh.
      Home charging can be around about the 17p per kWh where as some motorway charging stations (just like fuel) cost more.
      An EQA (66.5kWh) charged at home from flat will be approx £11.30 charged at home.
      Where as an EQC (80kWh) charged at home from flat will be £13.60.
      These are based on the average pence per kW in the UK right now.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Masato, it depends on the car and your charging situation at home.
      Battery Electric Vehicles like, EQA, EQC & EQV allow you to set a “Maximum State of Charge” which will stop it from charging above a set percentage.
      If you’re not using that and just the 3 pin, I’d probably suggest speaking to the electrician who checked it out before use. (Providing that is was checked before plugging in to charge, that’s what is strongly recommended anyway)

    • @SuperKoreanzombie

    • @npoleary

      You can set it to only charge to a certain amount if you aren’t planning on using the full charge of your battery.
      Completely optional but it can increase battery longevity, this is why iPhones charge to 80% overnight until literally a short while before hand.

    Hi Nick, can you get a Mercedes me charge account even with a Plug in hybrid, or is reserved for BEVs only? With my B class, I received the BP charging subscription. Can you have both?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Roger, most models of Mercedes with MBUX can access this.
      As I mentioned in the video, it is a chargeable service but it integrates your MBUX with some of the charging network and makes it so much easier to use.
      Yes you can use both, they’re completely separate. BP Pulse is from BP. And Mercedes me Charge is from Mercedes me 🤓
      Hope that helps!

    Hi if the batteries have say only 5% charge left in them for arguments sake let’s use the vehicle in the demonstration how long does it take for the batteries to fully recharge?
    And also what is the range of a full charge for the vehicle in the demo?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Paul, it purely depends on the vehicle in question and of course the charging speed coming out of the point you plug in.
      To work out charging times you can very very roughly work it out by dividing the battery size by the charging speed. But as I said this a rough indication only as batteries charge faster at certain points and it can also be affected by external factors.
      The EQA’s fastest charging speed is 30 mins from 0-80%. This is based on a 100kW charger in public through a CCS connector.
      At homes in the UK with a wallbox, this will be approx 9-10 hours overnight using a Type-2 connector.
      If you use a 3-pin plug, this will take a very very long time so is not recommended but is there as a backup.
      Of course plug-in hybrids have smaller batteries (as they have an engine as well). These can be charged in a couple of hours to a few hours, depends on the model.
      Hope that helps!

      Oh and the range of the EQA on WLTP is approx 250-263 miles.
      You can achieve this but you’d need to replicate the test conditions so in most instances you’ll always get over 200 miles.
      Just bear in mind in the winter, range will be significantly less.

      Yes it is pretty fast, but it solely depends on the chargepoint you visit. Some may not output that speed but yes it’s amazing the car has the capability to receive 100kW to enable fast charges 🤓
