- Hi guys! Hope you enjoy this attempt to start the Packard 288 c.i. Straight-8 I scooped at the junkyard a couple of weeks ago... We'll clean it up a bit and see if it'll start after sitting for years outside...
Thanks to everyone who ordered a "T" shirt... They are on their way now!

Those straight 8 Packard engines will pull a heavy load and will be quiet in doing so! Great engine! Great find. Glad you saved it from the crusher!
that's a smaller CI then the one from the straight 8 challenge ain't it? the one was a 327CI and that one a 288CI?
Man that old straight 8 runs good. Testament to Packard quality.
Yes ! Packard quality.......the old advertising slogan..... "Ask the Man Who Owns One" !
They were one of the very few manufacturers to make publicity of the strength of their engines bottom ends in the 1930's.
That engine is beyond sweet! Fantastic save! It's even better when Tom shows up. Looking forward to Saturday. Cheers!
Tom has great karma.
Growing up my dad & uncle had a sawmill that my brother & I spent many hours..
It was powered by the exact same Packard motor & I was always impressed how quiet & smooth that motor ran...
Some summer nights we would cut lumber to avoid the heat & the exhaust would glow cherry red for hours ...
Loved it...
What a beautiful sounding engine.
What a great old Packard engine with a beautiful sound.
Scott,
Tom was right - you are a lucky guy. That's amazing to see that something that was about to be scrapped and crushed, runs, and runs so well. Congratulations!
Ive been holding off going to sleep for this. Totally worth it.
What a sweet running motor! There's got to be some cream puff on the lot you can toss it in. Cheers from here.
Hi Randahl! I do have a few ideas about where it could go... Cheers!
Purrs like a kitten!
The look on Toms face when you said you wanted to put the engine in your Plymouth.🤣
Now all you need is a good Packard body to put it in
A junkyard running Packard engine and Tom make a great video.
Smooth! The engine runs quieter than the starter.
Tom's one-liner gave me a good laugh.
Dude! I would have loved to have been there and seen that live.
I can't believe how quiet it is, how smooth it runs...
Ask the man who owns one. He'll say, "It's a runner!"
Put it in the 52 this spring, two running Packards i 17:23
Freaking AWESOME...it's ALIVE...I love it!!!
Tom's right, you're a pretty lucky guy on that one.
Unreal how good it runs.
That was a cliffhanger ! I must be so dense, because when it did run it didn`t dawn on me that such a big engine
from the scrapheap could run SO quiet. It took me a few seconds. I expected flames and noise but this? Wow.
Its the Maggie Smith of straight eights, fascinating to say the least,
Thanks Scott.
Distant chainsaw noises bring me back flickering memories of the Red Green show🤓😆
Sweet 8cyl! My GranDads Last car was a Burgendy & Black 1929 Studebaker Dictator with twin fender mount wire wheel spares, Tan mohair seats, faux wood dash, nickel handle scrolls & a forest Green 8 cylinder. I remember Him takeing the head to have a freeze crack expertly repaired. They heated it up cherry red that took the warp out of it from a previous botched repair job, It was indistinguishable when they were done with it. It was so smooth & quiet but with that straight cut gear whine doubble clutching around the hills in Bellingham✌👍
As the proud owner of a 49 327 car I couldn’t be happier!! TEAM PACKARD
Great job that puppy runs so smooth!
What a tragedy if that had found it’s way to the crusher. She deserves to live on in a sweet ride. I can’t wait to see where she ends up. I do know that it will be awesome content. See you on Saturday Scott and fellow CWM fans. 👍🍻
Those were fantastic engines and I hope you can find a car that it can go in and drive the old girl again. It really looks as if someone took great care of it.
Great save, I hope that engine ends up putting a car back on the road.
Packard engines (as well as Chrysler/Desoto/Dodge/Plymouth engines) had hardened valve seats from some point in the 1930's forward, so the valves are not "burned" and usually seal even after many idle years as long as moisture does not get in the engine when it sits. There's a Dodge commercial truck film from the 1930's on TH-cam that shows the seats and valves being installed and states that one highly qualified machinist did all the valve work on every commercial truck engine! Busy man. My Dad had a 1948 Packard in the 70's as his daily driver and it was a great car.
* That vid you mentioned is called " Built To Take It" . Great vid they fly over bumps and though bouncy fields in a 1 1/2 ton stake truck. I feel sorry for the driver ! No seatbelts in those days 👊😎👍.
That is so cool how you got it running in the back of the truck. Its quiet for having no exhaust system too.
Wow.. that Packard engine sounds as good as any 'modern' engine! What a score!
I was kinda worried something was amiss- the late posting of this video.. glad to see it.. batter late, than never.
Eagerly awaiting my CWMC Calendar now. Love the show!
Smooth running engine!
Scott-That is the best running engine you have! WOW! Rich
They weren't kidding when they said how smooth a Packard straight eight runs!
Just made my night! Thanks!
Scott! I think you got lucky with that engine! Runs great! Now all we need is an old Pacard body! Lol!
This video has to be one of my favorites from your channel. That engine runs very nice!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great save Scott! Congratulations on another beating engine!
Nice save with this one Scott! Always great when Tom stops in and offers his help and ball busting hahaha! Cheers!
Man that is a fine running engine. Awesome find!!
Best running engine in your fleet! And it’s not even in a car. Amazing how quiet it is.
That engine has to go in one of yours cars. Runs like new , great job. I did order a calendar , looking for forward to Saturday. Cheers 🍻
What a great engine 🎉
Thats an awesome old cold start
Wow, that thing ran so good, quiet and smooth. Nice snag Scott👍
Major Score !!!!
That engine runs sweeeet !!!!!!!!!,
You are having great success getting the recently aquired tresures
up and running , good karma for good folks
Thank you fort the bonus features
Keep 'em coming
Tom always makes my day when he shows up 😁
Super cool. That thing runs dead smooth. Awesome score.
Kool save on this Packard inline 8. What a great sounding and smooth runner.
That Packard engine is a work of industrial art. Thank you for saving it from the scrapper. A nickel definitely would stay balanced on the head of the running engine; even straight out of the junkyard. Now, it needs a worthy roller to drop in. Would be cool if there is a way of dating it.
Awesome forensics, you nailed it Scott. Loved seeing the Packard straight 8 fire up! It’s a runner!!!
The classic rustoleum rebuild, putting distributors in backwards and creating huge vacuum leaks since 1970, so satisfying when you know the last guy just totally biffed the job, even better when you save big iron so the car can kindof live on when it wasnt going to!
😂😂yup
Fantastic sounding engine, what a score! Made my day (without me having to do any of the work😂)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oooh so quick tonight!!!
Glad this beautiful engine was saved from the crusher!
When you test-turned it over and 1 plug hole didn't Poof oil,I knew there was a valve stuck. That was just so Awesome when it fired so smoothly.Congratulations Scott ! Seal it up and store for a great body.Uhh...one you can fix. :) Cheers.
Wow that runs sweet would be cool to see it make its way between some frame rails
JB Weld and Tom to the rescue! That long discarded mill still has a lot of RPMs left in it. Well done, gents.
If you all get tired of Tom, send him my way 😂😂
It's always a good video when Tom comes by. What a character.
Holy cow! That Packard just purrs! Excellent save!!
That's wonderful. What a beautiful sound.
Terrific to see the Packard fire up. Did you get a 'better' early 50s Packard after the Straight 8 challenge? Hopefully one will come together some day. That engine very likely represents the pinnacle of both straight 8 and flathead development. Already a fine and well proven engine, it saw many, many punishing tasks during WWII. The postwar Packard straight 8 is an incredibly refined unit.
Engine sounds so smooth and quiet Thank you for the video
As a 5th generation West Virginian I thought only we started engines untethered in the back of trucks. Good on ya - what a beautiful runner :).
Sounds great. Nice to have that running.
God smiles on Cold war motors. And old Packard engines'
Congratulations on the start of the old Packard Engine. Thanks for the video. A steal for $200.00
💯👍👊
Perfect! The next tee shirt. A picture of Frankers with “Squirrel! Squirrel! Squirrel!” Underneath
Packard engine sounded fantastic road. My motorcycle VTX 1800 Honda, a couple of days ago a 100 miles. It's been beautiful weather here in lancaster california
Best channel ever
Scott, you defiantly earned the golden horse shoe award with yet another miracle first start for a two century investment! With auction finds that run + now a junkyard pick that doesn't even blow smoke it's time to buy a lottery ticket! Great short! Thanks! Looking forward to Saturn's day! Flat eights rule!
So smooth and quiet, and no exhaust system.
Love your videos
You know the engine is good, when the loudest thing is the starter.
Amazing find, sweet engine now looking for a home.
That thing runs quieter that a sewing machine, what an absolute sweetheart of an engine.
Seeing and hearing that beautiful Thunderbolt run made my heart sing and everything, thanks!
You should put the Thunderbolt 8 in your roadster project... That would be a sweet combo. Kinda like when they put Cadillac engines in the Allards in the 50s. 👍.
Your Friday extra episodes have really established themselves and deliver additional CWM goodness and entertainment. Great to see the Packard 8 running sounded good, and must surely find a home in a car? Bonus too to have Tom drop by and lend a hand and some of his sage wisdom
Sounds really nice! Now you just gotta choose it's new home. Well done!
Much happiness by saving this engine for another day. Sounds good. Hope it finds a engine bay that suits it!
Tom is right, you do have the best luck with engines! The way that engine was painted pretty nice makes me think that someone was fixing up a Packard, but never figured out they had the distributor 180 degrees wrong and gave up on it.
The ol’ straight eight sounds great! Must have been Tom’s input! Cheers - see you Saturday!
Love the plywood bed liner in the truck scott! I know you didnt do it, but that is pretty old school in my area. Back before all the bullshit plastic ones, and much better spray in type. Anyway, thanks for the mid week video! Todd Konoske the retired trucker.
Scott's good Karma manifests itself once again. That thang purrrrrrrrs!
Love the straight eights. Keep it rocking :)
They will never make anything that nice ever again. I'm glad you saved it.
Me too! Its better than I dared hope...Cheers!
Amazing how smoothly and quietly she runs. Quite an accomplishment.
Not only is it a relief for you guys when an engine fires up, it's a reason for the audience to cheer and maybe crack open a cold brewski!
Packard made a lot of mistakes postwar, but their continued dedication to engineering quality made this one of the great 20th century engines, even when outdated. No surprise it still runs. I’ll always be puzzled why a company that mass produced 50K complicated Merlin aircraft engines couldn’t come up with a modern V8 sooner than they did. Great find and I hope you can put it to use.
Glad the calendars sold-out . Looking forward to getting mine. ❤😂✌️👍 cheers.
Purrs like a kitten that one. Good job Scott!
That'll be a fine engine for just about anything. Man that engine sounds good already!
Straight 8s, CB750s, and Tom, nothing to complain about here, cheers!
Good old thing - I have a feeling, and I think we'll be around to see it, when we'll wish we still had all these things. Good on you for finding it! One rainfall and that would have gone very differently!
Everything runs better with Tom thanks for the laughs 😀
Listen to that old beauty!
It’s now a multi fuel dodge pickup! Nice save, straight 8’s are an awesome part of auto history:)
This is the sort of thing one can do with old, truly old, stuff like that Packard. Simple, overbuilt, rugged.
Can you imagine guys 50 years from now dragging a modern engine out of a scrapyard and trying this?
Me neither....
- Ed on the Ridge
Amazing a junk yard engine and a Studebaker flat head 8 as well and it was idling! Great job Scott.
Toms right you are pretty lucky when it comes to finding good running engines.
LOVE the Junkyard Packard Engine.. BAM !!!
Find a car For SURE
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Considering how wide open that engine is super quiet and tight, no bad noises. Good thing you saved it, can't be many good unmolested ones left. When I was a kid step Dad got a 54 Chrysler straight 8. He said it was the last year they made them. Car was super nice and ran quiet too. He got in a accident in front of my school and bent a fender and things and gave up on it. I just know he eventually sold it and no idea what happened to it. This was probably about 69 or 70 in Portland Oregon.
Tom is definitely your good luck charm…
And he shows up just in time!
