While it’s been a while that I’ve rewatched the first season of Overord, I’m pretty sure in one of those early episode, one of the _”NPC”_ that was sent out to scout outside of the castle mentioned that the area outside of the castle is not like the video game world.

At the time it was first aired it did suffer from unfortunate comparisons to Sword Art Online in this regard. You are not the only person to have automatically assumed that he was trapped in the videogame when the servers shut down, rather than actually having been transported to an entirely new world (along with the rest of Nazarick). It was especially common amongst people that had just seen the trailer for the show and not actually watched it.

It`s never mentioned in anime so I will tell you.
Scene from beginning is what made MC`s guild one of the most famous in game. It was an enormous raid by 1500 players and high level NPCs. All have died. And they were just 41 players

One of the best qualities of the series, is that it doesn't always focus on the MC (Momonga). There will be episodes where you barely see him, or he isn't there at all, because this franchise is GREAT at world-building. Just don't get too attached to any character that doesn't work for the MC.

very fun reaction, The only thing i want to say is that in overlord many details matter and will be important down the line, I don`t mind explaining them in comment section of those episodes if you are also okay with it :) .
for one they are not in the game anymore, its a new world with its own history and locations, and that green aura that showed up when momonga grabbed her boobs forces him to calm down and be emotionless , he is an undead after all.

  • @SnowyWolborg
    @SnowyWolborg 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Momonga comes from the world of 2138. And the world isn't a good place. The environment is irreparably ruined, the sky is constantly overcast with toxicity, you need to use a breathing apparatus to go outside. And the acid rain will physically harm you. The elites of society live in domed city-states and are protected from the outside.
Mega corporations have changed laws to where many governments have stopped functioning. Work environments are brutal, and deaths on the job are common as well. And because of the massive class divide, it is effectively impossible for a poor person to become wealthy or a wealthy person to become poor.
Suffice it to say, it isn't really a world that is worth going back to.

Overlord is one of my favorite animes, especially when you learn more about lore and backstory that isn't mentioned or fully explained in the anime. I personally think that each season of Overlord gets progressively better and better, with season 4 being one of my favorite seasons of anime in general. It's the perfect balance of an isekai and a power fantasy. But still has a good, not one-dimensional mc and a good, well-paced plot.

What I like about this anime, we see it in the first two episodes: too bad if we "waste time" not telling the story, we'll take 2 whole episodes to let the characters interact and leave you with the love before the story begins.
And this is often what happens in the following seasons.
I tell myself that a lot of things in this anime could make the main character shift to the "evil tyrant" side but that it's all the work on the relationship between the characters that makes it all more understanding and acceptable.

Overlord drops data seeds throughout the series a seed dropped in one episode may not grow to fruition for several more episode or even a later season little asides thought to be insignificant grow into major points later. The casual conversation Momonga has with Demiurge is a case in point. Stayed up one night to be in a game we had spent a long time making a city into the top ten to count down the closing of the server. Albedo calling Shalltear a lamprey will hold true later on.

Thanks for reacting to this! Warning: Pay attention to the post-credit scenes in some chapters. I'll give you some clarifications just from this chapter: The green light that illuminates Momonga every time he gets excited is a kind of "emotional inhibitor" that he obtained by becoming undead and that returns him to a calm state every time he is about to lose control.
In the Yggdrasil game one could get a base if their Guild reached a certain size and they even allowed them to customize their defensive NPCs. There were all kinds, although the protagonist only mentions one in the novel that had the theme of cats. The protagonist's Guild was designed around the Dungeons & Dragons theme, which is the source of inspiration for almost all of Overlord.
Naturally, since teleportation magic existed, the protagonist and his guild almost always appeared in specific places and didn't interact much with NPCs after designing them. That is why he does not remember very well which were the pre-programmed orders that controlled them.
Albedo's creator was an obsessed gamer who loved Gap Moe, that is, the "contradiction of appearance and behavior". Albedo is designed to look like a goddess and even her name means whiteness, but in reality she must be someone quite evil and in the final line it was added that she "she is a nymphomaniac". Momonga modified this thankfully.
In the world of the protagonist (a dystopian future) there are many laws for virtual reality. For example: At least 2 of the 5 senses must be blocked or reduced so that no one gets carried away and confuses fiction with reality, that's why Ainz is so surprised that Albedo has smell and body heat, because those are always the senses blocked in video games.
Also, when he... touches her, he does it because in his country there are many public moral restrictions and one is not supposed to do anything perverted without an alert being given to the authorities. If he were to stay in a game, even if the admins don't want him out, the government would find out that he had done an out-of-bounds action and raise an alarm. In the Ygdrassil game, the account of the player who tried to go too far was deleted and his name was published on a kind of digital wall so that everyone knew. (Super strict!)
Ainz is quite cautious and takes the scepter to the arena to test its magic, because if it doesn't work he can tell that the scepter isn't working right and the NPCs won't find out that he is defenseless.
There are still 2 Floor Guardians that have not been shown. This is because they have somewhat dangerous characteristics and Ainz doesn't want to risk seeing them until he is sure of the NPCs' allegiance.
The Great Tomb of Nazarick was originally a dungeon conquered by the Guild of Ainz Ooal Gown, who rebuilt it when they made it their base. It has a total of 10 floors and is full of traps that become more deadly as they descend, waiting for any invader off guard.
The first 3 floors are Catacombs, where several dozen undead roamed in the dark and are protected by the vampire Shalltear.
The fourth floor is an underground lake and It is protected by a Guardian named Gargantua, who has only been mentioned.
The Fifth Floor is a wide area filled with numerous icebergs and It is protected by Cocytus.
The sixth floor is a Jungle that is actually underground, but it doesn't look like it because one of the guild members went to great lengths to design a digital sky that was as realistic as possible. That's where the Amphitheater is, too, and the guardians are the dark elf twins.
The seventh floor This floor is an area filled with crimson lava that flows like a river and looks like hell. That's why the demon Demiurge is the guardian
The eighth floor is the most mysterious of all and we don't know much about it even in the novels. But we know that no invader of Yggdrassil ever managed to overcome it. It is protected by a guardian named Victim.
The ninth floor is the place where the Guild members lived and interacted and has many different areas. One of them was the Round Table where they had their meetings. It was protected by the butler Sebastian and the Battle Maids.
The tenth floor is the Throne Room where the Guild members would gather to face the invaders in the last battle, although this never happened because no one made it that far. It is protected by Albedo.
There is one more place, but it is separated from the rest and talking about it in the first chapter would be a spoiler.
I hope this information has served to understand some things.

    Commentary Episode 2 S1
Albedo is in love with Momonga because he altered the settings a few seconds before the game closed, but the vampire Shalltear does it because her designer included "necrophilia "among his fetishes. When the vampire sees Ainz, she says, "My beloved master, the only man I cannot dominate..." This is because her creator designed her to be a sadist, who enjoys dominating others, but also a masochistic, who enjoys being dominated, if only by one of their gods (The players who programmed them). Yes, Shalltaer is a concentrated cocktail of fetishes.
The creator of the elven twins, the sister of Shalltear's creator, created the twins with inverted outfits as a joke and made the brother shy as a kind of reference to her own family, because her younger brother did not obey her and she thought which should do it.
Since Momonga is a mage, he can't use weapons generally, but if he creates "armor with magic" and puts it on, then he can ignore this restriction. However, as long as he is wearing the armor, he cannot use his magic freely, so that is why he needs to wear the necklace in order to fly.
This should be better explained in the novels but the Anime hardly mentions it so I'll take a chance on explaining it. The world Momonga comes from is a dystopian future where pollution ruined the entire planet and one has to put on a special suit to get out and breathe, which is why virtual technology is so advanced. In that future there are no longer people who have seen the sky clear of black clouds or vegetation. They have a kind of greenhouse garden to generate oxygen, but nothing else. Momonga's player friend with the nickname Blue Planet was a nature-loving person who had read many historical records from the past and became obsessed with the idea of recreating the natural world that no longer existed. His masterpiece was the sky of the 4th floor of Nazarick, which is actually underground, but it looks like the outside because Blue Planet programmed it that way.
To Momonga that sky was a beautiful thing, but he didn't understand why his friend wanted to make this fake sky so much. But now he sees a clear sky for the first time and understands the motivation of his friend. At that moment he gets very nostalgic and when Demiurge actually talks to him, he feels a bit annoyed, but he tries to respond by following the "Overlord" character. It is because of this mixture of factors (Nostalgia, emotion, irritation, tension) that Momonga responds to what Demiurge says in a somewhat careless way and then forgets what he said. So, when Momonga talks about "conquering the world" he isn't serious at all, but judging by Demiurge's reaction... maybe they took him seriously.
The Ring of Ainz Own Goal allows you to freely teleport across all floors of Nazarick, saving time and avoiding traps. There are many of them, but before they were only given to the 41 Guild players and they were very careful with them because they didn't want them to fall into enemy hands.
When Demiurge recognizes Ainz despite his armor, he assumes it is due to his ability to teleport and therefore gives the ring to Mare, as he wants to move without being followed by time. But actually, Demiurge recognized it because all players emit a special aura that NPCs instantly recognize, so Momonga's attempt is ultimately useless.
I remind you to be aware of possible post credits scenes, specifically in chapters 4 and 9
Albedo behaves that way because she is a demon who is part Succubus and originally her creator designed her as a "bitch" because he liked the Gap Moe or "contradiction of appearance and character": Albedo looks like a pure and virtuous (even her name means purity), but she's actually a depraved... but now that Momonga changed her setup to "being in love with him" things have changed a bit.
The NPCs are defined by three factors:
The first is their racial stats, where we see things like alignment (better known as KARMA) that can be positive or negative. In the game this was just a measure of being resistant or vulnerable to certain attributes, but in the New World this meant personality.
An example: - 100 means that the character does not see others outside of Nazarick as equal beings, but as things or stones on the road, and it does not matter to them if they live and die. - 300 is pure evil and the character will enjoy the suffering of others quite a lot, he will want to cause the most horrible things for those who do not belong to Nazarick. One thing to keep in mind is that most of the beings living in Nazarick have negative karma.
The second factor is the configuration that the player who designed the NPC decided on. In few words, his biography. For example, that the relationship of the dark elf twins is one in which sister Aura always has authority over her brother is something that her creator decided.
Third and last is the curious phenomenon of NPCs taking on parts of their creator's personality to fill in any parts that aren't registered in their stats or setup. That is why, in a way, they seem to be children of their programmers.
Clarification: The NPCs do not know that they were originally part of a game, for them the players who created them were gods, supreme beings that eventually left, Momonga being the only one who stayed with them until the end. From their point of view, they disappointed their creators, so they are afraid of losing the last "god" left to them.

📌To Clarify - He did not transfer into the game he got isekai'ed to a entirely new world that inherit some world laws from the in game world of Yggdrasill DMMORPG. That is why their guild building is in a unknown environment. That's how the lore creates the big mystery. That's how we get the three worlds (Real world from 2130's , Yggdrasil game world and the new world). Part of the fun of this anime/LN is our journey discovering the history and connection of these worlds.
In the LN extra volumes, there are alternate universes or parallel universes as well, depending what you want to call it.

Now that I see the very beginning again, I tell myself that this one is really good. Finally, we know NOTHING about the main character (neither his face, nor his name, nor what he was like in his life, except vaguely that he had a crappy job and no real family) But the first five minutes, just in showing you "look what he has accomplished with his companions, look how proud he is of it, and look how alone he feels now" is enough to create empathy for him and understand why now he is ready everything for its NPCs and its castle. Strangely for a series called “Overlord”, this is not an egocentric delusion on his part. He just wants to preserve what he and his team built, because that's all he has.

Also ever NPC has a human mode and then a "Boss" monster mode as there not pure human in the great tomb, everyone is something Dark elves, humculi , vampire, etc.

After scrolling through the comments and seeing some of the stuff already explained, i'll primarily focus on what hasn´t been mentioned yet. Spoiler-free of course, but some of the mentions may contain mild teasers (nothing plot-relevant though).
Before going a little bit into the characters, you should know that the Light Novel (and as result, the anime) is heavily inspired by DnD. While it´s not an exact copy, there are a lot of simlarities here.
Aura and Mare are Dark Elves, which have (based on common fantasy-tropes) a very high life expectancy. So Aura being 76 years old means, she (and her brother) are still basically children. In DnD (based on a quick google search), elves become adults at 100, and have a life-expectancy of ~750 years. however: they don´t age like humans. they start to age far later, and while i didn´t find specific info, it seems to start rapidly before their death ("rapidly" in context of their life expectancy could probably mean roughly around the age of 700 +/- a few decades)
about the genre: Overlord, while also being an isekai (since the word "isekai" only means "other world"), falls into the dark fantasy genre.
Yes, Aura is a girl, and Mare is a boy. It´s one of the fetishes from Bukubukuchagama, the creator of the twins.
If you´re interested in their alignments: they also can be measured in somewhat similar ways to DnD. The Karma value (which defines the alignment) for the characters shown is the following: gnerally a value of zero is "true neutral", Momonga (negative 500: extremely evil), Albedo (negative 500: extremely evil), Shalltear (negative 450: very~extremely evil), Demiurge (negative 500: extremely evil), Cocytus (positive 50: neutral), Aura & Mare (negative 100: neutral-evil). I just think i should note (not directly related to the anime): this does NOT mean they do evil things for the sake of being evil. It´s rather that the average person may perceive their actions as evil (this is not 100% accurate, as it is difficult to explain without spoilers at this point)
another fact about Momonga: since the show is heavily inspired by DnD, we also know a few "traits" that define his character. we´ve seen already, that he is level 100 (max level in Yggdrasil). For the classes that make up these 100 levels, he has: 15 levels in Skeleton Mage (max lvl), 10 levels in Elder Lich (probably max lvl), 5 levels in Overlord (max lvl) for his racial classes. As for his job classes, that's 10 levels in Necromancer (max level), 10 levels in Ruler of Death (max lvl) and the remaining 50 levels are widespread across many different traits. I could go far deeper into his build, but that would completely blow the comment section^^
about the "force" that calms him down: it is not confirmed what that actually is. But it is theorized, that it is either one of his abilities that he inherited from his Yggdrasil-character, or a racial trait since he is undead.
If there are any other players or not is so far unknown (i won´t specify anything intentionally, so don´t take this part as any indicator of confirmation or denial). But considering how strong Momonga is, we can assume that IF there is/are another player(s), you will certainly notice.
Also: all of the characters of Nazarick belong to the family of "heteromorphic races", which basically means: they have a basic race and can evolve into an advanced version of it. This should not be confused with "shapeshifters", despite SOME of them having an alternative form they can transform into (like Demiurge for example). In case of Momonga, his base race is "Skeleton Mage" and his advanced race is Elder Lich. The Overlord race is the final form of Elder Lich, which as far as i know, does have some additional conditions in order to obtain.

Just finished all 4 seasons and it is a fun show. Only downside is they clearly did not have a big budget and it gets worse every season so the animation quality never goes much beyond "mid" and often dips into "pretty bad". Especially the CGI creatures/monsters get worse and worse over time.
But the characters and story make up for it and they did the best with what they had in some key scenes.

  • @reverance_pavane

The NPCs of Nazarick were mostly defined by their jobs. The more important ones got more descriptors, some being rather excessively described in great and useless detail. Others less so, so their reactions tend to be more reserved. However the level guardians (most of the named NPCs you have met) were individually crafted by each of the guild members and had a lot more detail in their characterisation (although this wasn't as apparent in the game as when they suddenly became real). And a lot of their personality and desires were built into them as a reflection of their creators natures an quirks. For example you have already noted that Peroroncino player (and Shalltears' creator) was quite a fan of eroge (hentai games). Their creators are worshipped by them as their literal gods, and Momonga/Ainz most of all because *he* did not abandon them!
One thing of note is that the Yggdrasil guild Ainz Ooal Gown (whose name Momonga ["a rather timid Japanese pygmy flying squirrel" (which explains a lot about the general nature of the player)] takes as his own) was exclusively composed of hetereomorphs (players who played monsterous races such as undead sorcerors), who were rather disliked and hunted by the other players on the Yggsdrasil server. So they had to band together for protection, and in doing so fully embraced their "bad guy" status, which is why many of their NPCs and troops are monsters and demons in their own right. [And whilst "evil" was just an NPC attribute in the game world it will probably have a more pronounced effect now they are self-aware.] As one of the more successful (and disliked) guilds in the game, The Great Tomb of Nazarick was designed to protect the guild's treasures (and players) *very* effectively. No raid had ever made it down to the lowest levels (let alone reached the treasure chambers where the really powerful artifacts are kept). And they had been targeted by some very *big* raids on the server.
So that's what has suddenly appeared in the middle of an existing fantasy world, with apparently no one the wiser (yet). I wonder what will happen next?

At the end of 2 episode, that was real humans, which live in new world. Momonga and Nazarick were transported to this world.

The thing with this anime, if you don't read the comments your views will drop.
Because the fandom pretty much NEEDS to explain Light Novel details that the anime skipped. And without those details you won't fully understand the later episodes. And if you keep making the same mistakes with every episode, Overlord fandom is known to have a short temper. XD
For Episode 1 and 2, let me give you the necessary details:
    1. Unlike Log Horizon, they did not get teleported in any game. YGGDRASIL does not exist any more. They are in an actual, real, parallel world where "coincidentally" the same magic and items from YGGDRASIL exist.
    2. Nobody is an NPC anymore, the information of NPCs and Momonga has been re-written and they are now actual beings. They can die now. The other people, the kings and queens and knights and farmers and other beasts, everybody is real. Nobody is an NPC. Its a real world referred in the LN as "New World".
    3. Momonga was the leader of this guild called Ainz Ooal Gown, that does not mean he is the strongest. He is just street smart. There were far stronger and more skilled players in the game. Momonga can best defined as just above average. He was a dedicated Role Player, so he did not focus on PvP at all. However, he actually had a good PvP win rate because he has very good adaptability.
    5. The guild is known as Ainz Ooal Gown and the guild base is called Nazarick. Its an underground tomb. Since its underground, therefore the floor numbering are reverse: That means 1st Floor is at the top, immediately under the ground and 9th Floor is at the bottom, deepest underground.
    6. Momonga's leadership and ready-wit can be explained by 2 examples:
    a. He wasted no time and immediately sent Sebas to inspect the outskirts of Nazarick to look out for possible ambushes and attacks.
    b. Him squeezing Albedo's boobs is not just perverse. He actually wanted to check how loyal these NPCs are to him and to what extent will they follow his orders, now that they are not AI anymore.
    7. The NPCs strength cannot be judged linearly. Nobody is stronger than the other.
Albedo has the highest defense stat
Cocytus has the highest attack stat
Shalltear is extremely fine tuned for PvP
Aura alone is weak but she is a beast tamer, so with all her beasts she is on par with the other NPCs
Mare has extremely high MP and magic related stats
Demiurge has the highest intelligence, although his attack and defense are not that high
Sebas is a monk, his melee attacks are the highest
    8. Albedo is simply chosen to be the leader of the Floor Guardians, there is no parameter based on which she is chosen
That's all for now. I might not be available to give details for every episode but someone else surely will. It is the duty of every servant of Nazarick to bring in more people into our cult.
    All Hail Nazarick !!

@@TheSpecialKExperience Oh then I need to put Episode 3 and 4's additional details in your next video.😂 Don't worry we are all aware that people initially watch this anime like the others, thinking its well adapted.
Actually this LN is so detailed, if the anime adapted it accurately, it will span for 5-6 seasons with 24 episodes each

If i had the chance to be trapped in a game, as my Avatar.. I think I'd be tempted to pick Eve Online, so i get to be an Immortal, insanely wealthy Ship Captain Space-God with access to some some truly insane technology and live a life of pure decadence and power.

I love this show and have watched it more times than I care to admit, BUT I almost newer recommend it to anyone because of the first two episodes. It's not like the rest of the show doesn't have any fanservice, but the first 2 episodes go a bit overboard before watcher has a good grasp on story or characters. Now the show finally starts to get to the good stuff of character and world building.

the guy had a base, Rules of bases your supposed to have a path to the base core to be able to be attacked, but you can apparently have that path thru teleportation circles so he set up his ai helpers to simply change the route to the base thru teleportation circles
game didn't do anything about this balance fix exploit. he's a camper and everyone quit, because its all handled by their super competant helper AI NPCs.
See I understand why the game failed.

its even more sad than the anime shows. the real world is a horrible mess. big companies are running everything, the nature is destroyed and you cant go outside without a breathing mask. its hell on earth and the only way to escape is via gaming, so it makes sense why he is loving this game so much
