Ironically the anime cuts a lot of extra info for instance ainz isn't isekaid from a normal scifi world, he's taken from a post apocalyptic dystopian cyberpunk world, where he stepped over street orphan corpses on a daily basis, ate nutrient paste, only got an elementary school level education at twelve (Normal for people like him), watched his mother drop dead from overwork, had never seen plants or stars due to the sheer destruction of the environment and to top it off the mega corps had replaced the governments as the main governing bodies.
You forgot that they need to wear Gas Masks to not die from shit and the acid rain
What the fu-...Is that why Ainz seems so knowledgeable and professional when it comes to how a company should be run and applies that to how we rules as a king, but when it comes to actually thinking things through he just fumbles through it?
Always thought his level of intelligent and intrigue was rather...inconsistent, but that actually makes most of the things he does make a lot more sense contextually speaking.

Ains Ool Gown, formerly the Goal of Nines, as a guild was placed in the seventh tier and remained in the tenth after Momonga was the only one running it. It was not the best guild around, but it was one of the best.
TouchMe though? he was the best player in the game. That armor Momonga is using was a world item, the whole armor, the armor of the perfect warrior and it was a unique item that could only be acquired once in a pvp tournament event. TouchMe managed to create a broken build that coincidentally, with that armor made him even more broken.
But strength was not everything in Yggdrasil, knowledge was actually more valuable, along with data grinding and resource management.

The clan that preceded Ainz Ooal Gown was Nine's Own Goal.
Touch Me's armor is not a World Item, it is called World Champion Armor, and it is slightly weaker than a World Item. It was made for him by the devs at his request, because everyone who becomes a World Champion, of which there can only be nine at a time, gets one item made just for them. I'm fairly sure it can't even be looted.
This part isn't something you got wrong, but is more of just a fun bonus: Ainz Ooal Gown wasn't the strongest guild, but it has the best defenses of any of them. No one guild could defeat them, even if none of the Guild Members took part in the defense.
The extra details the books give make it even more badass.

Heavy quotes on the "light" of light novel. Dude is a D&D master and added a lot of detail into that world.

What I absolutely love about overlord is instead of introducing stakes to overcome, it introduces the stakes of the characters that are going to be killed by the main cast and makes you care about them, so while you understand why Nazarick is doing what they're doing, you have to feel bad for those they're killing.
But at the end of the day they are mereley NPCs. And while yes we do care for them abit, we know they are mainly a means to an end. Plus with Ainz in control and possessing world items, im sure he can ressurect any of them that do perish and he needs alive.

Except Clementine. Nobody felt bad for her death given situation. Or Slaine Theocracy to much as their desire for human only world. Or Elf King for being a power hungry rapist. Mind giving examples of fleshed out characters in Overlord who actually deserve death or punishment.
Everything that happened to the Holy Kingdom was messed and showed the true evil Nazarick can bring. The Workers also being poor unlucky test subjects was sad. Outside the Theocracy guy who deserve worse. The Lizard people thankfully seem to be doing well now verse the "war".
@@DarkRavenWolf50 For all knowledge known at the moment. The world Nazarick was transported to isn't in any game. So all the living beings aren't NPCs. Heck the NPCs of Nazarick show full sentience and outside traits controlled by their flavor text can independently change.
Funny thing about resurrection in the story is Ainz can, but doesn't like to do it. Given cost and ramifications depending on situation. Though he does do it in story several times. He has also decided not to do so as equally.
I like how there is a need of the deceased wanting to return to even have resurrection work. Besides there being spells that Ainz know that can stop resurrection of a certain tier as well. Maruyama put a good amount of thought into such powerful things like resurrection in his story.

The anime armor is also not the LN armor. The actual armor is complete full bulky tank, where you have no clue if it's a man or a woman wearing it (How it was described in LN).

@@danielcesar664 Yep, I am a big fan of the isekai genre and Overlord does everything right. The closest second would be that time I got reincarnated as a slime. It's a personal favorite though, there are plenty of good anime out there especially in different genres
Funnily enough, Shalltear is well above Ainz in terms of actual combat ability. She was min-maxed while he spent a lot on roleplay abilities.
Ainz is just smart.
Ainz just has a lot of experience when it comes to PVP with other players. And he is also very cautions. While Shallter at that time thinks she's so strong and unbeatable.
I find it funny though how a lot of Ainz’s non-minmaxed character focus is the reason why power-scalers tend to rate him so highly. Like, Ainz even mentions when talking about different abilities how in game all serious players would have counter measures. But because power scaling is wack and you’re trying to compare people from entirely different worlds, stuff looks OP as hell.
Kind of another point in favor of TFS Vegeta stance, power levels are bullshit.
In fairness, those roleplay abilities are significantly stronger due to the side effects of Flavor Text. Best example is The Goal of All Life is Death which kills literally everything including the earth and air.

@@someguyy194_2 You may want to go back and reread the books. He remarks that "the goal of all life is death" affects more than just people in the new world. Or did you think the entire area turning into a barren wasteland with poison air was a coincidence?
I like how realistic Overlord is, everyone wearing something that fit with their class when fighting no matter what gender they are.. like, there is no bikini armour for female knight, even shaltear and albedo wearing full plate armour when in battle mode..
*if you think about it, Albedo's helmet looks like Ruin Sentinel Helmet from Dark Souls 2
*for Pelinal Whitestrake in the reply section, i think bikini armour in episode 1 season 1 is not a KNIGHT, more like thief class like clementine.. which is doesn't make sense if a thief wearing full plate armour with shield..

The novels are way better. Overlord is at it's best when the author goes into extrem amounts of detail in order to create a very realistic world filled to the brim with political intrigues (and of course ainz wont understand anything that is going on under the surface).
The anime cuts most of this and though I would not call it a bad show at all, the adaptation and it's charakters sadly lose a lot of depth because of that
Agreed been listening to audio version of the novels and they are so good. Shame they had to fit book 1-3 in a single season for pacing reasons since most anime watchers have no patience for some reason.
I'd have to disagree.
Reading how Ainz questions every single thing and doubts himself countless of times, making himself look like a total idiot, relying on his subjects' ideas and being led around, while he can just take over the world in seconds, is just sad and confusing.
Especially after I've read a flashback to the first raid of Nazarik, as Ainz has been shown as pretty smart strategist.
At least in anime they cut out all the annoying whining he goes through, cuz it rarely adds ANYTHING of value to the character.
On the political details I might've agreed on, if I ever liked those details, to each their own.
@@neksuscat Ainz is not dumb at all, he himself thinks of himself as average and I agree, but he never had a great education and therefor no idea of politics or simular things while being surrounded by brillant geniuses.
His imposter syndrom is a result of him being a replacebal saleryman for 90% of his life and is an important aspect of his charakter that helps to set him appart from bad leaders like philip or the elve king.
Of course everybody will have preferences but the hilarious "sasuga Ainz-sama" moments when aniz stumbels into a complicaded plan and ruins everything just by beeing present, as well as the amount of thought put into every little aspect of even minor charakters are something that makes overlord special and sets it appart from simular storys

I've read a couple of comments here that said his past was elaborated through some extra notes and stuff that barely got out of Japan.
If it's not in the story, how should I know about what makes the character and justifies his actions?
To me his character takes a 180° turn once he's thrown into another world.
From a smart strategist with low social skills to ever-doubting, awkward mess of a villain.
I like him more as he is portrayed in the anime, tbh.
@@neksuscat his past and the dystopian state of the world are brought up all the time, espcially in the earlier novels. It's never the focus of a conversation but Aninz compares the situations he is curently in with his old life a lot.
The brillant strategist part is still present in the new world like when he battled shalltear. But beeing good at playing Ygdrasil does not mean that he would exell in any other aspect of life at all. He was pasionat about this subject and had a lot of in game experience, but that does not change the fact that if you put someone who only ever had elementary school level education in control of a nation he will probably not be very good at it
If I recall, Touch Me as a username was in itself a flex.
Touch Me has some kind of deranged busted class he got from winning a PvP tournament, so what he's really saying with that username is "try to even touch me, I dare you."
World Champion is the class, only get it from winning the tournament. And only that class can wear his armor (+Ainz with his Perfect Warrior in the new world)

Touch Me was the 3rd strongest player in all of the game. The Pure Silver Paladin! Ainz said himself that if he used the Guild Weapon (an OP item by itslef) he MAY have a change of defeating him
It is legit the only book series that I have ever enjoyed reading, and I constantly try other books that interest me, but none can ever hook me like Overlord did. So many strings.

It's almost same concept of guy getting isekaid to a new world with magic worms where he works hard for 500 years and dies only to time travel to the moment he started his training and decides fuck the world i am gonna become immortal.
Super evil,smart and very very patient mc without any harem stuff plus almost all the other powerhouses are smart as hell too
it's a statement that Ains' hardest fight was against one of his own.
but it kinda makes sense that they would be comparable to Ains. as back in the game, Ains was a player, and the Guardians protected the guild against other players.
Shalltear is stronger than Ainz. Ainz designed his build around role-play. Taking everything related to necromancy and undead that he could so as to be the "Undead Necromancer" character. Shalltear was perfectly min-maxed.
It's a testament to how good at planning combat Ainz actually is that he managed to win a fight he by all rights should have lost.
@@notbob555 Not only that, her build also exactly counters his. He's a necromancer who specializes in summoning undead, she's a holy paladin with a health drain weapon. He can't summon anything against her since she'd just heal off of it.
The dub voice for Ains is a top tier voice actor and I’m not sure if anyone would’ve been more accurate to the character and just better in general.

The thing about Ains's last 2 skills that he used to get rid of Einherjar is that together they're basically the ultimate instant kill combo
The Goal of All Life is Death makes it so that all instant death spells temporarily ignore ALL immunities and resistances, but at the cost of all of them having their cast set to 10 seconds
Meanwhile , Cry of The Banshee was the instant death spell that kills everything in a specific radious
And for those asking why he didn't just use this at the very beginning, if he had done that, Shalltear would have revived ,but would have still had all her mana and skills (including Einherjar) putting Ains into an unwinnable situation as there was no way he could use his half-baked melee build (which he would inevitably resort to as he would run out of mana eventually) to kill Einherjar and bring Shalltear's health back down to where Fallen Down could kill her before she killed him.
The best part is the combo TGoALiD + Cry of The Banshee is not even the greatest combo Ainz can pull out
Slight correction: TGoALiD doesn't set the cast time of instant death spells to 10 seconds, it delays the instant death effect itself by 10 seconds.
But think philosophically isn't the goal of all life is reproduction and death.
The anime waters down a lot. Overlord is pretty gruesome and brutal, and some of the stuff that's implied to be going on in the background but is never really explored is real messed up. I love the series because its basically one of the unusual series where the protagonist and his faction just go full unrepentant villain mode sometimes. Its even funnier when the MC is largely just bullshitting his way through just about every interaction. He ain't your usual isekai hero. Its edgy, but its a fun kind of edgy.
And he is an Edgy who does not want to be one and in fact is ashamed that his creation is like this (Although in a very exaggerated way)
The anime does actually tone down some stuff because the LN content gets way too brutal for TV.
Case in point, Clementine's death scene. In the anime Ainz stops after her spine and ribs snap and she vomits blood with her last breath. In the LN, he keeps going until a good amount of her innards were squeezed out through her mouth, like a toothpaste tube that somebody had stomped on.
He was THAT pissed.

Him calling Shalltear a loli was so surprising for me because I actually never considered her one. Like to me a loli has to look like or sound like a child, along with being short and usually flat. But I never looked at Shalltear and thought she looked like a child, nor does the rest of the guardians treat her as such (except kinda this latest season when she is learning from Ainz). Mare and Albedo only ever tease her about being flat, not a short child. So I wouldn’t consider her a loli, where I would consider Beatrice from ReZero a loli because Subaru treats her like a child

@@hendeyjagger7489 Out of players, he was the strongest and some considered him the strongest in the whole game. One of the only few who won a massive world champion pvp tournament (and the reason why he got the class World Champion). In 1v1, he was unbeatable.
I wish overlord would never end but the author wants to finish it soon. It was a good journey cant wait to see how it ends 🏴☠️
He said 18 volumes but I think he pushed it back to 19 when volume 15 was split in half. Hopefully we get more than that

I think all japanese authors got shook by Miuras death (Berserk), its such an iconic series that having it be cut short by premature author death must have put things into perspective. Almost all long runners have suddenly announced a planned series end in the last couple of years

Honestly, Overlord took my favorite Anime spot. Originally Beserk and Log Horizon were the top, but everything in Overlord resonates with me when it's literally just me in an Anime...Skeleton Race from an RPG? Check. Necromancer? Check. Guild Leader/Officer? Check. Magic focus? Check. Political play? Check. Everyone assumes you are smarter than you are because you guess accurate a lot? Check. Roll with that assumption because it helps later when you need to get shit done? Check.
And the list goes on...xD
And all the complaints people had about OP Gary Stu characters goes right out the window, because Ainz is the Stuest Stu of all time, and you all love him. HYPOCRISY, THY NAME IS WEEB!!
@@Alondro77 Spoken like someone obsessed with power scaling. Ainz faces plenty of other challenges and he’s nowhere near perfect. He’s also quite often not the focus of the story. The perspectives of a massive number of characters are equally, if not collectively more important, than that of Ainz. If you believe Ainz is any variation of Mary Sue, you do not understand why people complain about them.
@@Alondro77 Um...The reason noone complains about his OP Powers is because this is supposed to be a Power Fantasy not pretend to be a normal story.
And on top of that, Overlord does OP right by having him constantly hold back and hide his powers for fear of another Player being around. He casts Super Tier Magic to bait a response, hands out World Items to the Guardians, questions everyone's motives, all to avoid putting Nazerick in a situation they aren't prepared for.
Awesome to see you checking it out. Was very into Overlord when reading the LN. (Also, consider the abridged version. Has some hype moments.)
Overlord is interesting. Ainz is great, but the best parts are how the entire world is dealing with the massive powerhouse of Nazerick suddenly popping into existence. There are tons of perspectives. It’s really a shame that the anime fell in quality, since the LN just gets better and better as the world expands.

I love how faithful the series is to its roots in dungeons and dragons and other rpg elements. It's a great show easily in my top 3 of all time.

Shaltear is actually the youngest NPC at least interms of being made, since the update that brought some of her classes, ride/rise of the Valkries came out later, Her exact age isnt known but She seems to be younger than Aura which is around 70ish years old.

Fun fact: One of the members of Ainz Ooal Gown, the guild, was murdered IRL for hearing something he shouldn't have about a corporate secret. There's a reason Ainz don't wanna go back people. Hypercapitalist corporate ruled cyberpunk hell
Shalltear was technically stronger than Ainz at that fight at the end of season 1. But Ainz was a (great) PvPer, knew exactly her strengths and weaknesses, and got all the preparation he could have before fighting her. Shalltear thought that, being one of the strongest floor guardians after Rubedo, got her victories through sheer brute force without planning. This why she lost twice in a row.
The latest season is as good if not better than the first season. One example is that Albedo will do way more than just be a waifu now. A lot of politics will happen and things will move fast but in a great pace.
I'm still pissed that they cut the Sacred Kingdom arc to make a movie out of it. We will still get it animated, but the story will be even more cut due to budget and time cost, also it disturb the continuity of the series. From the point of an anime-only viewer, the started talking about a phantomatic war that happened in a near kingdom from a certain episode (no spoiler) and how much it was a great deal. It is a important plot point and if you don't read the novel or watch the movie you might get confused.

Ainz isn't even a master PvPer. He is good, but he'd basically be in the top 10%. For an example, he never managed to beat Touch Me who was the best PvPer. Ainz was great at tactics and strategy, as he basically learned nearly every spell in the game and what to do with and against them.
Also his build was complete RP. So it wasn't even optimized for PvP. He just went for all death and necromancy magics, and is why he has the skill The Goal Of All Life Is Death.
@@Myltsi91 When you are in the top 10% with a full RP set, you are by definition a master PvPer. With a min/maxed character, he would have more than a fair chance to beat Touch Me or anyone else. He is just that good with a far from optimal build.

One of my favorite notes about Overlord is how they straight up call out the in-world creators of the guardians for their weird tastes.
Season 4 just got started last month, and now, the seriousness keeps coming, every Tuesday!

I think it's important to remember when looking at character designs and names, the characters of Ains faction are literally from a game. Hence "Touch Me" being the name of a player in a game.
the great thing about this isekai, is that instead of the isekaid character being a hero, or not caring about a thing, he is like the "final boss/antagonist" of the realm the hero is summoned into.
Overlord came out in 2010 as WN and 2012 as LN, so anything you see that looks like overlord is inspired by it.
Overlord is my favorite Isekai and I would strongly recommend any Isekai enjoyers to check it out.

Remember, these were the usernames of Ainz's group. Sure some had 'serious' usernames like Wish III and Ancient One, but you had some edgelords, trolls, and outright cringe with Beast King Mekongawa, Touch Me, and Luci★Fer.
The anime is fun, and the mach 9 clapping CG soldiers in S3 always make me laugh so hard from how shitty they are.
The light novels fucking slap so hard tho. I cannot recommend them enough if you like the anime but wanted more details because dear god do they cut a lot of the small stuff.
Plus S4 skipped like 3 whole ass volumes so they could be a movie later.
Overlord is great.

The dub for this is also really good. It's currently on season 4 and the stupidity of one of the nobles of the Empire is hard to wrap your head around. It's a surprise he didn't get himself killed immediately.

The biggest way you can tell this started in an MMO game setting is the fact there's a guy called Touch Me
I gotta say the english dub is way better in this anime. It's more grounded and less screechy and the girls sound way more interesting in that they have much greater range From badass to cute ecchi and back again. And the english voice of Ainz is just... *chef's kiss*
Touch Me is actually marked as a World Champion, so he's one of THE best players of Yggdrasil xD

Overlord is definitely one of my favorite anime, and the great thing is, you can't go wrong with either sub or dub, both are great. Though for Overlord I do prefer the dub, but that's me. And the other thing, even though we see Ainz almost always dominate fights with little to no effort, the threat that there might be others of his level out there is always present. And seeing how the world reacts to someone of his power makes things really interesting, I can't wait for the new movie to come out, I need it. I know not everything is covered in the anime, but even though there are a lot of things cut from the source material, it's still a good adaptation in my opinion. It gives you a lot of the best parts in the anime, and the voice acting for either language is good. So when you watch the anime, and let's say it's several years or so later, however long the light novels go on for, and we get it all animated. I'm sure they'll handle it really well, and since they can't really include everything, it'll give people who want to know more, reason to go read the light novels. At least that's what I intend on doing once the anime is completely finished, I'll go back read the light novels and get to see what the anime left out.
