To my fellow Dan Fogelberg fans....about 14 months ago, I typed in a comment for this video to inform you that I was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer, that I would be getting treatment, and I coverted the prayers of all who read my message. Ironically I was at the same age (56) that Dan died of this disease. After radiation therapy, and a recheck of my PSA last week, my cancer IS GONE and officially declared IN REMISSION! I'm a walking miracle! Thanks for your prayers on my behalf!
So great! Are you still cancer free?
I'm a 16 year cancer survivor as well in the jaw. Good to hear and hope and pray it continues
Miracles exists!🌹
Awesome! Stage 2 lymphoma survivor here, not as critical as yours but on 2/4/2021 i heard those words- CANCER FREE! I am grateful for my success, and very sad for those not so lucky, including my mom and father in law
Can you give us an update?
I lost my father and at that time i said bad words against him, i wish i could turned back time and tell my father how much i love him and I missed him soooooo much. I really regret all the bad words I told to my father, but I know someday we will see each other again.
This is a timeless masterpiece by a poet whose work speaks to so many. I believe this will still resonate in the souls of people decades from now. Thank you, Dan, and thanks for posting this. Beautiful.
Hello dear,how are you doing?
Great composition.I used to deliver Margret Fogelberg's (his mother) newspaper as she lived in my neighborhood. I once had a chance to see several of his gold albums framed above the fireplace in her living room. She told me that "If I ever saw a jeep in her driveway to come up to the door." That would be Dan's as he often drove his jeep cross country from Colorado to Maine. She said he really enjoyed the time to reflect and think as he drove.
I never had the opportunity to meet him.
A man, a guitar and a story from his heart. Evidently the ingredients of greatness. Thank you Dan Fogelberg
My Dad was a great dad. But now he has alzheimers. He doesn't recognize me. We were close when I was young. About 15 years ago we had a falling out; he didn't agree with my politics: I joined a union as an active member. We didn't speak for two years. It took a lot to close the distance over a stupid issue. I visited him 2 days ago in the Nursing home. Over the years nothing has greater meaning than this song.
I love you, Dad...You are the Leader of The Band.
My dad died when I was 13, I'm 53 now and still miss him so much, he worked two jobs to keep us, he died when he was only 49, Miss you so much dad xxx
😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔
@Betty G. so sorry for your loss. May your daddy rest in peace ❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tears are rolling down as I write this response. I was raised on his albums. This song in particular as well as run for the roses takes me back to a time. I have children of my own now and understand much of what he sings about. I am in between the love for my own father and the love for my children.
Life is beautiful and cannot be taken for granted.
Thanks for posting.
Very Poignent!
Thanks Dan. "The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old. But his blood runs through my instruments and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man, I am the living legacy to the leader of the band."
My dad was blind the last 4 years of his life. My dad was a great man and pretty famous for our small town because of his benevolence and other stuff. So I guess to some degree, I am the living legacy to my dad and his band of benevolence.
This makes me think of my own father so many years ago, he gave his life for us kids, so many years of endless hard work, to give a good home, food on the table, the love in our hearts. Thank you Dad!
Hello dear,how are you doing?
I last saw Dan Fogelberg perform at Echo Basin Ranch near Cortez Colorado in the year 2003!.. My FATHER IVY INGALLS died August 6, 2003. He was my everything! I was grieving horribly but went and heard Dan for the last of many concerts. I saw him in the early 1980's at LSU, Red Rocks, Pagosa Springs High School gymnasium - the girls basketball team had won state & he lived here. That show was so great - the lights went out - and a rodie came with a flashlight to hold over his head until the lights came back on.......I've seen him so many times I can't count. BUT hearing him a few weeks after my Daddy died and knowing he was buried just over my right shoulder in Mancos, Colorado was the MOST SPECIAL! I know music very well & would start yelling on his introductions because I knew what he was going to play! I know the words to EVERY SONG & it was a small crowd & raining some. I remember this guy standing in front of me turned around to see who was singing all the songs, & I said I was sorry. He said no, it sounds great keep on. & I did RIP DAN & DADDY. I'll be up on that mountian with you soon enough! I Love You So........l go rest high on that mountain as Vince Gill says so beautifully.
DAN FOGELBERG YOUR MUSIC IS SO BEAUTIFUL THANK YOU DAN RIP😢❤❤
For all of us who miss our dads, thank you for this beautiful tribute of a song. You are with your dad again, I'm sure.

my grandfather was a real hero. everybody went to him for advices and help not only within our family, but also almost the entire community. we sang this during his funeral, and i remembered myself hugging my baby and almost sitting on the floor crying..i miss my grandfather so much..i love you, lolo ... Florante Tugbo Pasco!
A good song is a good song, regardless of whether it’s 500 yrs. old or 5 minutes old.
This is the 3rd video of "Leader of the Band" I have watched today. Saved them all to my library. It is heartful to hear his voice difference from the years past. Still the greatest, meaningful piece of music, ever. I ditto what "1oldwhtguy" says. Thank you Dan Fogelberg for the gift you have given us all.
❤️
Hello dear,how are you doing?
RIP Dan… Your Voice Will Live On…. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
To my father who also died early due to prostate cancer. He was 53 years old, and the year that this song came out. To both Dan and Dick, thank you for being leaders for me.
I always get teary whenever I hear this song. Such a classic!
Hello dear,how are you doing?
same
Every time I hear this song, I cry!!! I love Dan's voice and I love the songs that he writes, and I love the emotion he puts into his songs when he sings them!! GOOD JOB, DAN!!!!!!
This song reminds me of my Dad too. He died at 67 when I was age 34 of cancer. Way to young to die, and way too young to lose your Dad. Thanks Dan Fogelberg for the memories!
Thank you very much for sharing!
I am so sorry Sondra. I bet he knows how much you miss him. I pray he does. This song affects me the same way...my dad passed in 1973 at age 67. He is deeply missed. cmd, comment above.
I always listen to this song after a night out....as I think about my father whom I love dearly. I love you dad....
Hello there,how are you doing?
Mom, we lost you nineteen years ago today, and as he sings - I don't think I said "I love you" near enough.
Certainly one of the greatest songwriters, poets in a time when there were so many. Not only talented as singer songwriter but also played most of the instruments on his album and was a gifted artist as well. An amazing talent with none of it wasted. What an inspiration!
Such a Powerful and Beautiful song!🥀🕊🥀
Dan lived in Pagosa Springs, CO and I in Durango. I saw him several times in town & one day I spoke to him just to say hello. He sat down on a bench and talked with me for 20 minutes or so, just local stuff... weather, tourists, love for the mountains. I will never forget his kindness that day, rest in peace my friend.
Wow
That would have been awesome
That is so awesome! What a treasured memory! ❤️
Lucky for you to talk to the legend..
These simple but prolific words are time-enduring. Another great talent who never received his dues.
Hello there,how are you doing?
2 years since ur passing Dan. You are sorely missed. Listening to your music all week. Love to jean and family.
My father was and will always be the leader of our band,my brothers and I Had to say good bye to him yesterday,We Love you PAPI,You are now in heaven!!!Thank you for devoting your life to us.
What a great song! Reminds me so much of my own father who brought music into our home. He sang and played a guitar much like the one Dan has here. Never had a guitar lesson, but could play anything. It's true you'll always regret not saying I love you enough.
Hello dear,how are you doing?
dan was one of the best this planet ever produced. dan will live forever in the hearts of like minded people
Your life has been a magnificent triumph to surpass the man. YOU ARE A LIVING LEGACY. 🏆🌹
So touched...and thank you, Dan.
"But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul...
I thank you for the music and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough
And Papa, I don't think I said I love you near enough."
Ooooh wowwww! I really really admire this man! It's not enough to be a musician. You got to leave a good mark in the souls of men. Oh Dan you hit mine! You are a spiritual creature, a humble man and a kind son! You live in our hearts! God bless your tribe!!!!!
❤️
Thank you Dan for the beautiful songs you've created.

My stepfather, took on 6 kids, raised and supported them. He never played an instrument and couldnt sing but for some reason this reminds me of him... was an amazing human beign
He sounds like a special man.
One of my top five favorite songs. My dad introduced me to movies when he showed me "Fargo" at a young age. At the time, my mom was happy with him doing that but years later, I headed off to film school and is now writing screenplays. :D I think we can all listen to this song and be reminded of how our parents inspired us to do what we love to do most in life.
Hello dear,how are you doing?
I am in NZ, my son who became a lawyer at home in Sacramento says this song reminds him of me, not a musician but the human condition of father son and seperation is strong and poignant. I think of him when I hear this. I saw Dan do it live at Hard Rock in Vegas . Dan lives on in these lyric poems
I sang this song at my father's funeral. I miss you dad. "and papa i don't think i said I LOVE YOU near enough. :(((
Hello there,how are you doing?
This makes me cry every single time. My dad always picks me up from school and everytime we hear this on the radio, I try so hard not to cry. I secretly dedicate this song to him (He'd call me dramatic if he knew LOL) and everytime I hear it, I just can't help but think about him even if he's sitting right beside me in the car.
Dan, Your music remains timeless and always brings me right back to the place in time and thought of when I first heard each of your songs. May you always rest in peace and may God bless you in heaven. You will always be one of my favorite artists of all time!
WHEN I AM ALONE I LISTEN AND I LISTEN TO THIS SONG IT MAKES ME REFLECT ON MY FATHER AND ALL HE HAS DONE FOR ME I LOVE YOU DAD AND APPRECIATE YOU I AM PROUD TO BE YOUR SON.THIS SONG HELPED ME UNDERSTAND MY DAD THANK YOU DAN R.I.P.

How are you doing hope you’re well safe from the virus?
This is indeed Dan Fogelberg's Greatest song and also one of the very best ballad song of all time!
wir vermissen dich...du hast uns wunderbare Lieder hinterlassen
Dan had a major influence on me as I learned to play guitar. Saw him live in the mid-70s in Boulder, Co in an auditorium - he just played and sang. No smoke, no mirrors, no dancers. An immensely talented man. I miss Dan.
I agree so many artists had real talent so no smoke and mirrors were needed back in the 70s and 80s.
Me too
Same here Goose....same here. Well said...
the best song ever i ever heard
A Legendary Man. Mr. Dan Fogelberg. RIP I Love Your Music. Poetry Pure Magic...

He’s a hero 🦸♂️ how are you doing Betty hope you’re well safe from the virus?
Hello there,how are you doing?
I love to see an actual performance of the song and I have my wish. This is one of my Top 3 from Dan Fogelberg. Same Auld Lang Syne, Longer and Leader Of The Band. I really miss the music I knew he would still have made.
spoke to me...if I could have just given my dad this song as an explanation to our relationship I believe we could have been better friends.
So awesome....another great talent gone way too soon.
I spent 4 years learning this song on the guitar. I can play it note for note. I could never sing it like he could but I endeavored to, and still do. He inspired me to learn the guitar. His voice is quite amazing. When he plays, the guitar, or piano almost gets in the way. I just want to hear his vocals.
One amazing talent, and if you take the time to just read the lyrics to his songs you'll be amazed at just the songwriting talent.
his voice is passionate, he cares about what he sings. I think that's rare nowadays.
I regret that I never got to see him in concert.
thanks dan you are a the best .rest in peace.from your best fan
I'm a huge heavy metal fan and I can see 4 people have no soul. One of the all time great classics.
It’s New Years Eve at Midnight 2019-2020 and just finished listening to this song and Dan’s “Same Old Lang Syne”, as well as Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” remembering when... My father, our leader of the band, died on Christmas morning 1981 at age 52. He was my best friend, who I had followed into the Law Enforcement field. Then, 6 yrs and 9 months ago, my daughter died suddenly at age 31. All three of these songs just brought the emotion of losing my dad and daughter at such young ages just overwhelmed me. My post is my way to share them and keep their memories alive. Far to many wonderful loving soulful people are taken away to soon. Praying for all the children who lost parents and parents who have lost their child.
Hey Mike...God bless you, my brother.. In life, we plan for our parents, in a sense, to leave before us. But it doesn't make it any easier and I know that all too well. Lost both my parents when i was very young and way before their times. But no father should ever have to bury his child.. Sending you prayers and strength. I hope you found peace, my friend. Be well.
The kind of music that will never fade..
The sound MMmmmmmm !
Merci
Beautiful, the voice of an angel!
He has an angelic voice I love his song to the fullest 💗how are you doing hope you’re well safe from the virus?
One of the greatest songs ever, best song about fathers of all time.
Thank You Dan. You will be forever remembered for your kind heart and beautiful music. RIP.
beautiful! the most heart warming song ever :) Brings tears to my eyes everytime i hear it.
I have always loved this song. It shows the love between a parent and a grown child. My dad was a gruff man but he always had time to teach me even if I was too dumb to realize it.
Thank you Derrick, so much, yes I know he did, and still makes my heart ache for both of men who left our world too soon.
the song came from the bottom of his heart..really hits mine ❤️,such a great singer /songwriter.
i'm trying to learn the song but end up listening to the whole thing over and over again.. great song.. i just can't stop breaking into tears...
On Father's Day, I can think of no greater tribute. Thank you Dan... in our minds and forever in our hearts.
Same here how are you doing Terry hope you’re well safe from the virus?
Hello dear,how are you doing?
such a beautiful song they just dont write songs like this anymore i beleive he wrote this about his father
he was a very blessed dad, to have a son who loved him that much.
He was so amazing, loved his music dearly! RIP beautiful Dan Fogelberg!
Hello there,how are you doing?
Beautifully done .....You are missed & those like you. In a now world of crap. Miss the real people.
My Dad died the year this song came out and it spoke to me and I became a Dan fan forever. His music has continued to inspire me through life, he is so missed!
His father, Lawrence Fogelberg, was the leader of the band at my high school in Pekin, IL in the 60s and 70s. I saw Dan perform this at the Peoria (IL) Civic Center in the early 80s.
That must've been sooo special! Was his father there in the audience?
Wow. What a Blessing...
Dufustoo What an amazing experience to learn from those who taught Dan.
Dufustoo this song 2ould mean all that much more. Thank you for sharing
Amazing talent gone....RIP
It's time to induct DAN FOGELBERG into the Rock ☆☆N☆☆Roll Hall Of Fame!

One of the legend in music industry......... DAN FOGELBERG
I sing this song in videoke inside the Mall somewhere in Manila and right after I finished the song the old woman whisper on my ear and she told me that I have a beautiful voice 😍😊😚
This is a song that touches my heart and soul! Thank you, Dan! xo
Hello there,how are you doing?
This song still rings true for me after all these years....."and Papa I don't think I said, I love you near enough"....
❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️
That line gets me all the time as I lost my dad at the much too young age of 49. I always thought I would have so many more times to tell him
2018 we are still here Dan
There are only a very few songs that obtain HYPER GREATNESS. Don't care for his voice on this live version, but the song, this SONG is HYPER Greatness. Can't think of more intense or loving song a child you could sing to honor their Father
nothing beats this song...
This is by far the most moving song I've ever listened to. From the guitar to the lyrics to Dan's voice. Everything is very powerful.
u may rest in peace Dan, we love u....
u leave a nice wonderful and meaningful song..
I still miss my Dad, and he's been gone since 1999.
No words! Dan, you're missed.
Now and then I write something about the hole in my heart where the anticipation once was for Dan's next album, same hole that won't close because he's gone so early.
No next concert. Damn I miss his being on this planet.
Ron
I really love his intro speech...
I really love this song...reminds me of my Dad
I wish I could have those two years back...
Reminds me of my dad and it gets me every time when this line comes, "and papa i don't think I've said I love you near enough".
The respect shown while that song played was AWESOME. It was as if everyone was holding their breath so that everyone could be touched by this masterful tribute. Thank you, Dan. You've touched countless lives, and have made better musicians of us all.
❤️
You will be leader of the band always Dan.
During this strange times of covid19 I spend lots of time at home watching songs on TH-cam and trying to improve mi guitar playing (still have tons of room for inprovement..) and keep coming back to Dan's beautiful songs. I watched this video dozens of times during the last 3 months and always ended up deeply touched. What a loss, his songs are a blessing and will live forever, I got all his records when I was in my 20's ... I'm 61 now and still in love with his music
❤️
