This song is very special to my son and I. When my son was a baby he had horrible colic every night at dinner time. One night as he was screaming away "Vincent" came on the radio
and he instantly stopped crying and he listened with a very serene look on his face. So the next day I went out and bought the cassette and every night when the screaming started
I would play the song and he would calmed down and listen. I then just had it on repeat so the screaming didn't start at all. When he was in high school he painted me a beautiful
painting of Starry Night and had learned to play "Vincent" on the guitar and that was my present for my birthday that year. To this day it is still the present I cherish most. And it always makes
me tear up.
The last night I visited my sister before she passed we listened to this song ❤
@@johnplacivita4416 Sorry for your loss. Recently lost my younger brother tragically and I don't think I will ever get over it.
2024 Still listening
He wrote this from his heart, one of his most beautiful songs. A true classic.

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there are some pain I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people,
@@AndyArnold-uz5yo I'm so sorry, she had beautiful taste in music.
@@susanh3342 yeah she dose and Don McLean is such a lovely musician, i wish was here to see how beautiful our daughter has become. i do appreciate your kind words
@@AndyArnold-uz5yo I'm sure she knows how beautiful her daughter is. ❤️ And she is probably an angel on your shoulder.
The melody of this song makes its own rules. It's not bound by a straight time signature and tempo. It's deep, flowing, soft, and haunting. He sings it effortlessly. No one writes like this. This is truly a masterpiece. A musical story as opposed to my modern definition of a 'song'. Brilliant Mr. McLean. Just brilliant.
Precisely.
In irish traditional music this would be called a slow air, no time signature, just flowing and beautiful
Your words in the comments are as wise as the lyrics in the song, enjoy the bond ❤
Years ago, before arthritis stopped me playing, I learned to play this song. I quickly discovered that there is no way to "keep time" with it. It's just a matter of feeling. And when one tries to set it to a strict time signature or tempo (to "quantize" the music), it loses its beauty.
Hello my friend, Are you British? I had my DNA test & to my amazement I'm 20% British. Welsh & Scottish 🍷🙏.From my mother's side. Take care ,🇫🇷🤗 Arnaud Bourbon Amaral
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song💖💖
We're here.
I'm one....
Don McLean...his voice ages like fine wine. Simply beautiful .
what a beautiful and accurate comment
...as does this song... forever simply beautiful...🎸🤍🕯️🕊️🎶. As a bonus I feel healing each & every time.
Seeing him sing this live, as opposed to the recorded version, you can see and feel the words even more... So touching. Beautiful. Always tear up when I hear this one.
his vouce brings one back to the seventies, so much water in the morning atmaspheire, would walk and see the fedgins on the grass learning to explore out of their nest, we used to pick up the birds who hit the windows trying to migrate, , was a beautiful habatat, , so true he has one of the most soothing sound, a true poet! bounus his abitlitry to sing like a no other, his own sound, beautiful, so glad you can see how much we all care and remember you>3 a class act
Absolutely stunning... you nailed it
Me too! 😔
ME TOO ALWAYS CRY.
nb
I have fallen in love with Don McLean for the second time in life. I was 13 the first time and I'm 63 now.
Since I was a child this is one of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard. Thank you Don McLean for this wonderful song. I am a big fan of you and Vincent van Gogh.
hello dear,how are you doing?
Gets me every time.
Maravillosa canción y su voz hermosisima!
He really sings this perfectly.
The older he grows ....
The more relaxing the voice...
I mean I am speechless...
It's beyond any description 🙏🙏🙏😢😭😭
seeing him next April
Don Mclean paints us a picture of nostalgia, yearning, pain and love through his music and from there we reflect our own lives. ❤😢
This song makes me cry
Thats true 😔😔
I've never been brought to tears by a song, aside from this.
You're not the only one
Yes
I allways cry.love you Mr Don..l wish you can come to denver.
He is expressing a phenonmenom of our time which clearly, is a unique event in our lives. We enjoyed the colour of Van Gogh's life, and now we are able to listen to Don Mclean say what we couldn't possibly put into words and music and for this, I for one, am truly grateful. A wonderful song, impeccably sung, thank you Don Mc Lean.
im 33 just discovered this song. its broadening my mind
My wife and I were blessed to see Don in concert in a 1930’s theatre years ago and have a meet-and-greet afterwards. To see and hear him, to get to shake his hand and thank him for blessing us with his talent truly was an unforgettable evening. Timeless. The ages have not weathered his music one bit and it never will.
"They would not listen, they're not listening still; perhaps they never will." Prophetic words.
His voice mellowed out as he aged like fine wine. Beautiful.
I was a child when I first heard this magnificent song.....
Nathaniel Roberto' has a cover of this beautiful song please watch him and subscribe too please ❤🙏
HE HOOKED ME WITH "PIE"...I WAS 32....THAT WHOLE ALBUM WAS GENIUS. AT 83 I STILL A HUGE FAN OF LYRICS, MELODIES & RENDITIONS!!! I WISH HIM ONLY WELL....Y'ALL AS WELL
I miss the world in his melody 😭
@@reuellicayan1500 REUEL, NOW 85 I STILL A HUGE FAN......."TIS SOOO LOVELY......Be Well
70 now 19 or 20 when I saw him perform this, a masterpiece 👌👏✌️
I'll never forget , in the fall of '79, seeing a poster advertising his concert in my home province the following January. He put on a fantastic solo show; I saw him ( with 2 accompanists ) again 2 or 3 years later; some of my best musical memories.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 LINCOLN, I DO HOPE YOUR "LOCAL PROVINCE" IS A MORE TRANQUIL PLACE THAN MOST ON THIS MAD, MAD, MAD PLANET. Be Well
If you are happy you enjoy the music, but if you are sad you understand the lyrics👍
Beautiful... this song played over and over in my head when I was 7 years old, and I had to leave all my family in Scotland to move to England...then went through some very difficult traumas in England...this song pulled me through...and kept me strong...thanks Don...you are an inspiration to so many ...beautiful
Vincent Van Gogh is my favourite painter too.
I hope you are doing well now
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Chapter by Chapter / Verse by Verse !!!!!!!
Imagine the pain if you'd left England to live in Krankie land, it would take more than a song, a few gallons of whiskey to drown your sorrows!
Scotland is bueatyful country.. 🏰
2024 here in my bed listening to his music , so nostalgic, lost love.
I'm doing the same. I'm missing the simple days of these songs. How we all miss those days.
Don McLean and Harry Chapin, had the magic that could draw you into their lyrics, to live the words. Mesmerizing you might say. The world needs more talent like this.
Agree just like Phil Ochs or Gordon Lightfoot❤️
Probably THE most beautiful song, and this is the best version I have heard. Just wonderful.
One of the most astonishing things about this performance is how the conductor is trying to anticipate Don's tempo, which is in constant flux, not a single bar is equal in measure, everything ebbs and flows but the conductor manages to keep abreast of these changes and enables the strings and other instruments to blend in seamlessly without interrupting the magical flow that Don is dictating and what makes this a truly astounding rendition of the song.
Thank you for that analysis. I mean this sincerely. ❤️ Its so beautifully done…..and being his composition, it sounds wonderful no matter how he chooses to sing it. Praying we have him for many more years. I just lost Gordon Lightfoot, my #1 for 50 years. Now realizing Don had a similar way of telling stories with his music/lyrics.
GOD WHY DON'T WE HAVE PERFORMERS LIKE THIS MAN 😔😪😢
This is a masterpiece. There is nothing else to be said. Pure class!
Beautiful song... 2023
I just got back from a museum in Sacramento. It was about Vincent Van Gogh. It was a three dimensional beautiful experience. My children and grandchildren took me , on the way I played this song to them ❤️♥️. This man is a beautiful poet beyond compare.
Hi dear,how are you?
the older the voice ,the anest and warmer it becomes.
Back in 1990's I sang this song to a girl I loved in Romania. She cried. Unfortunately, we didn't end up living together.....
The songwriting, the phrasing, the sincere emotions… thank you Sir
A timeless, classic, poetic song and melody sung to perfection. It brings me to tears !
It speaks of a consciousness trying to awaken the sleeping zombies among us
Being sooo familiar with insanity this song penetrated deep into my soul. Knowing the pain of the sufferer especially when we are so misunderstood and ignored. Our love is so pure, it's frightening to the human soul. I live on to listen. Thank you Mr. Van Gough. Blessings to all, love more, give less materialism. Peace, Grace and Mercy.
What a beautiful beautiful comment Barbara . ❤️
I can relate to that but there is goodness in every thing in our lives. All has been forgiven❤😮❤
Truly one of the best songs EVER. Mr. McLean penned an all time classic. 😎
Where American Pie was an epic anthem, Vincent is a subtle, sublime masterpiece.
This is one of the rare songs where both the lyrics and tune are so powerful ❤ salute 🫡
Don McLean inspired me to play the guitar(I’m 14)
It’s_me_donovan_i_guess That’s wonderful...a great skill to have...my Dad, Son and two cousins all play guitar...I love listening to their beautiful playing.💎🌈🦋
Cool kid. Follow your dreams. I didn't play guitar until I was 21. I didn't waste that time. I just wish I started guitar at a younger age
Thats good❤️
He seems to sing this with a lot of feeling Those who know of Vincent Van Gough will appreciate and enjoy this song with feeling of lot of sadness Thank you Don you are the best 😰👍
this gets me everytime. he sings it like he feels it in such a way that he almost takes us to Vincent by ascending time and space. incredible song.
The Greatest Tribute ever written to a Great Artist and Master in a Most Beatiful, Lovely,Meaningful Song, Timeless and Unforgettable 🌷 I 'll forever love It! Great Don McLean! 💕🌺💕
His best song. American Pie got all the accolades but this one hits every note and every nerve. Well done, Mr. MacLean.
After all these years... his voice and phrasing are magnificent...
I met this man when he performed in Australia and I got the opportunity to meet him, give him a hug and sign my Don McLean DVD. I was sooo nervous but he was just so nice and accomdating. I will always remember that interaction with this legend. Talk about star struck!!
Thx for sharing this. So glad he was kind to you
You are blessed.
What an artist! So underrated, but so immense in his art and craft.
It is just called 'love'. But I wish he would watch the movie, which shows he did not kill himself, & was protecting arch villian egoitist maniac Gugauin.
Perfect 50 years ago. Perfect when I heard it live tonight in Morgantown. So happy for Don McLean to be my first post-COVID concert and my son's first ever concert. One of the most beautiful songs I think I've ever heard.
Hi dear,how are you?
@Margaret Karcher: How old was your son. His reaction, questions?
The finest solo performer I ever witnessed. He had the audience in his hands to the chorus of Babylon.
I've been mesmerized and crying to this since I was a kid in 1972
Thanks Don for writing and singing one of the most beautiful & melancholic songs of all time Love & Respect Jim, Surrey, England X
One of the greatest song writers in history
Some times words are no where near enough to express feelings. This song is hauntingly beautiful
One of the most beautiful songs ever written by anyone. Always brings tears to my eyes.
but I could have told you Tom this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.....wish you had given the meds a chance miss you...... just......forever Muma xx
I don’t know you but your comment brought tears to my eyes and made my heart pain. 😐
What Tracie said. My 22 yr old Veteran Nephew left us 38 yrs ago. Seasons in the Sun also reminds me of Him. Prayers for You Sandie.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
How awesome is the sound of the vocal mic. Shout out to the sound engineers etc, who capture this magic.
How simply sung but is simply beautiful. The story and song both bring tears! ❤
I've been reading a big thick bio of Van Gogh. This song since childhood has made me cry. I went to the Van Gogh emersive exhibit and sat crying. It felt odd but good to be in his work projected on walls and floor.
This what musical talent should sound - guitar score, lyrics and vocals ! 🌷👌🏼
What beautiful song by sir don Mc lean. a great voice
What a beautiful performance of your beautiful song. Thanks so much, Don
Please listen to Nathaniel Roberto's cover of this beautiful song and please subscribe too ❤🙏
Beautiful voice Don Maclean 👏👏👏 loving Vincent ❤️❤️❤️Beautiful music 🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️my favorite painter 👩🎨❤️❤️❤️
This song is perfect.
Old as wine, but is good wine! Magnificent song! This is a masterpiece!
Listening to his songs and his voice is still always relaxing ❤️☺️
One of the best versions on the internet. I've always said If I could just honestly say, "I wrote that song" I would gladly cut off an ear..
Zen simple but perfectly executed acoustic guitar, haunting, evocative lyrics, expressive voice, what's not to like? Don, Jim Croce, and Gordon Lightfoot set the gold standard for the singer/songwriter genre in the early 70s. Good times.
I’ve never forgotten a live show he did in the 80’s with one other musician (bass guitar probably) in a small studio on German TV with a small audience.
One of the strings of his (possibly electric) guitar broke. He kept on singing while digging out a spare string and attaching it to the guitar etc. Simply a professional.
(As for the songs - like many here commenting - this and American Pie send shivers up my spine.)
After twenty more years, Don still has that crystal clear voice .. 👍👍👍
This is sheer perfection! Much more expressive, with a richer tone (and vibrato!), and a slower tempo than previous performances - just the way it should be. I strongly recommend seeing the Van Gogh Immersion Experience if you can, and learn about Vincent's life. There are so many stories of folks with troubled minds who are also geniuses. There will never be another Van Gogh.
I saw the Van Gogh Immersion Experience just outside Tucson and heartily agree it's a must-go for Vincent aficionados! Chances are it's playing somewhere near you; there are a number of them around the country.
This is an incredible live performance of this evergreen classic.
His voice and slowed down tempo just add so much to the song, not many artists sound as good as this decades after the original release of a song.
Total respect to the artist Don is, he has stood the test of time.
I salute him.
✊🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I keep coming back to Don McLean and his singing. Tons of singers out there but his music holds a special place in my heart. Keep on singing. And thank you for your music. ❤
“For they could not love you, still your love was true” that’s the story of my life
Love you Don and your beautiful voice with your beautiful lyrics and love ❤ Thank you my friend ❤.
As a young boy I did not know what this was about. It did not matter. I gave it a texture in my mind. Every word became a color. Every phrase a well deep with swirling beauty. Vincent was an abstract. An obscure image of the dreamers. Those that want to create that better world and the world that does not see them passing by. That is the canvas this song put before me.
his song was like a diamond that never fades of time, like also this performance that never change his prime.
As wonderful as ever. His rendition of this this song hasn't changed at all. Simply amazing
absolute masterpiece.
you cannot beat a brilliant, genuinely heartfelt ballad played by the artist who wrote it. This transfixed me when I watched it.
Doesn’t get any better than this - every word, every articulation is poetry. It’s beautiful🥲🥲🥲❤️
Azt hiszem még sohasem sírtam ennyit egy dalt hallgatva! Fantasztikus! Köszönöm!💝💗
Love your song Vincent since forever. Really fantastic that you continue to sing it with more feelings of love in your voice. Really hope you never stop singing it Sir! With love from Canada ❤️🇨🇦

A real masterpiece dedicated to another, unlucky author of masterpieces: Van Gogh...... BRAVO, Don!
Amazing great voice and brilliant songwriter!!!!
This is a masterpiece just as Vincent's paintings are all masterpieces!!!!!
