Just a prayer. May the American people be like this, like John Denver's audience. Men and women, black and white, of all ages and possibly many other social classes. All together in harmony, what serenity and kindness in your eyes.
About 10 years ago, I was standing on a subway platform in NYC. I was on my way home from an awful day at work. I was late on my rent, my car had been towed, my bank account was overdrawn, and I had just used the last ride on my MetroCard. I was hungry and I knew I didn't have any food at home. I wouldn't be paid for another 2 days. As I stood on this train platform, a homeless man with a guitar sang this song, tears on his face. I gave him the last $3 in my wallet and stood there on that platform and cried with him while he sang. This song will always remind me of that moment.

I got divorced at 27 and after several months of trying to figure my life out I took John's advice. I took a week off of work and hiked eight of Colorado's beautiful 14ers. My wife and kids are very grateful for the effect that this song had on me. Thank you Mr. Denver.

I grew up in a really tough neighbourhood in the seventies and eighties. Crime, violence, drugs, poverty, handicapped mother, father a criminal, always in jail. Everyday was really tough to get by. Growing up like that you could not help but to get always in trouble and into fights just to stand your ground. However, when I first listened to this song by coincidence I was 12 years old and it suddenly filled me with so much peace that I got addicted to listening to this song. I clearly remember laying on my bed as a kid in the runned down housing project with fungus coming through the wall, listening to this song over and over again just to destress. The calmness and happiness I experienced listening to this song was like a pure miracle to me. Of course as a tough kid I would not openly admit to listening to that kind of music. Only my best friend at that time knew and he had a great voice and he liked J D too. So whenever we met or when we were on our way to school I asked him to sing that song for me. My mom was born and raised in WV. She passed away before Christmas. We made the trip down country roads to take her home. I miss her. We brought her home to Buckhannon, WV. Our daughter played the ukulele and sang this song. The entire family joined in, and so did the minister! RIP mom. Glad we could take you home. I love you forever.
This song is not about people that left West Virginia only. It is about everyone that left back their home, their family, friends and the place where they spend their childhood. I am not from West Virginia but this song speaks directly to my heart. What a diamond...
It's not even about West Virginia. It's about WESTERN Virginia. Meaning western part of VIRGINIA state. NOt WEST Virginia state. The rivers and mountains are in Virginia state.
After three brutal combat tours in Vietnam I was discharged to meet no one as I walked out the gate. I spent two years on the road looking America and for the boy that was lost somewhere in the jungles. living this song, meeting the greatest people, was the greatest of times. I’m much older now at 77 and finally found that boy and the America that I lost. I’ve walked down many of those country roads John sings about. Whenever I’m a bit blue I play this song and it takes me back. Thanks John for the memories.
West Virginia is a product of the cauldron of The American Civil War. Virginia passed an ordnance of secession and people in the western portions of the state were having none of it. The State of West Virginia was formed in 1861.
And his voice is perfect for it. If you'd like to hear another version that's probably just as good but in a different way, search YT for The Petersens. They're a family band that's very talented, and they normally play in Branson, Missouri They do this song pretty damned well.
It is one of four official West Virginia state songs. Denver and his 2 co-composers debuted the song December 30, 1971 at the small Cellar Door music club in Georgetown, Washington, DC.
Our Swedish "John Denver" Ulf Lundell made one of the greatest songs Ive ever heard, "Öppna landskap", which translates to "Open Landscapes", is often regarded as a second unofficial national anthem of Sweden, cherished for its celebration of freedom, nature, and Swedish identity.
I sang this to my mom when I was a child and sang it to her again days before she passed this past July...it will always have a special place in my heart. ❤
I think of my mom when I hear this song. She passed away a long time ago, but this song makes me feel close to her. Sorry for your loss and I hope your heart heals quickly. God bless you and may your mother RIP
I come from Switzerland and every time I hear this song, I think that this is the American spirit. John Denver gives us a wonderful image of what the USA represents.
Music is a gift from our Creator! Jesus is the reason for our existence..... for all things were made by Him and for Him. He lived a perfect life (without sin) and then died on a cross. Three days later He arose from the dead. He is coming back soon. If you believe this.....then you will be saved and go to Heaven some day (instead of Hell). It is God's amazing gift to us sinners. You just need to repent of your sins and ask Jesus to be LORD & Saviour.

I'm from Poland. Never been to West Virginia and probably never will. I'm not in the happiest moment of my life, but that's okay. Thanks to this song, I always know where my place is in this world - with my family. Travelling together, being close to nature, showing my children the beauty of nature. Maybe better times will come, maybe one day I will show my kids West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains... Take care folks, hugs to you and your loved ones from Poland!
I live in Argentina, and even today at 74 years old I am accompanied by his songs that reached my heart, long before I knew his lyrics. The days in the country where I spent my vacations in winter and summer, rural roads and mountains silhouetted by reddish sunsets are associated with my early childhood. During my youth I discovered that his songs and his music softened my nostalgia because somehow I also felt included. His actions in favor of peace and the preservation of nature speak of his spiritual greatness. Thank you John for continuing to exist among us.
For my boy Charlie, who passed away suddenly on 3/27/23. A dog that loved to sing (howl). He would start howling if this song was played, he loved it. We love that boy and he'll always be on our mind when listening to this song
Very sorry you recently lost your buddy, Charlie. An animal's unconditional love is a wonderful thing. Sending you understanding from the country roads in north Georgia. 🐾
I was so in love with him in the 70s as a teenybopper. he taught me to play guitar. I cried like a baby when he died. I couldn't sing along with his positive love of life songs without crying. This lasted for a very long time. A big part of my childhood crashed right along with him. Such a horrible end for a beautiful man. God has certainly rested his soul. Thank you, John, for your life and all you shared with us.
Love this song, it reminds me the time we were on vacation and we were in the car together with our neighbors who were a few years older. This song came on the radio and we all sang and clapped with it. Wonderfull time. Great song!
I've only been to 3 concerts in my life and John Denver was one of them. It was a great show with really great music. So sad that he is no longer with us but his music and legacy will certainly live on.
Spent my teenage years singing along to my JD Lps, it was a sad day when I heard he had died in a plane crash. But his music lives on and I still have all my records.....that's a long time ago.
Almost heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River Life is old there, older than the trees Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads All my memories gather 'round her Miner's lady, stranger to blue water Dark and dusty, painted on the sky Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me The radio reminds me of my home far away Driving down the road, I get a feeling That I should have been home…
Grew up in Short Gap West Virginia and when I was traveling home to see my father who was very ill this was playing on the radio and when I slowed down my wife said what's wrong? I said I am too late he has passed. That line of "should have been home yesterday" still gets to me after all those years.
I always cry listening to this beautiful man. Saw him in concert & am richer for him being alive. I lost some part of me when he died. I was in shock for awhile & a part of me still is
What’s so ironic is that he learned to fly from his father, who was a military pilot. It helped to reunite them, as Denver had said his father was pretty stoic and unemotional. And learning how to fly killed Denver. So sad.
I'm 73 and everytime I hear John sing, or one of his songs...I CRY for the great memories he gave me and everyone who loved him. He's never going to be Gone as long as we remember.
This is probably the only song that is universally loved by everyone who knows it. It's so positive and upbeat, and timeless to boot. Makes me want to go to West Virginia, despite beimg from England.
This song will never get old. Mr Denver knew how to capture emotion into a song and turn it into gold. RIP, Mr Denver. Thank you for your musical impact. Whenever I'm driving on a country road, I'll think of you.
Hello, there! How are you doing? I hope you are fine and staying safe? This song reminds me of so many things back then. Do you think nowadays country musicians can do better like him?
God bless you Mr Denver. I am from Greece, and despite having nothing to do with West Virginia or the USA, I think that this song is one of the best ever written and performed. God bless everyone who misses his hometown.
When John showed up for the sound test before this concert, he was greeted outside by several fans singing this song. John was so impressed that a song he recorded 23 years before was still so popular then. And 25 years after, it's STILL a much loved song. We lost you too soon, Mr. Denver - those country roads took you home. Thanks for the music and memories, like this one.
We used to camp on the Shenandoah when I was a child. West Virginia, never met a person who wasn't kind and welcoming! Good people! God bless John Denver. I still grieve for his passing. We will sing with him in the next life!
My mom loves John Denver... She plays it every morning. It reminds her of my late dad because he used to love John Denver as well. Rest in peace, sir...
It makes me cry because it talks to me in a way as "take me home, to the place I belong" means to take me where I feel like home. A place I belong. When you can't find the "place where you belong" to, it... It hurts. You feel lonely and so distant from any warmth, any solace. And you just want to go home.

John Denver's music represents the social harmony that Americans lost in the chaos of division, anger and hatred. I wish with all my heart that that peace returns one day.

Written by Bill Danoff and his wife Taffy Nivert. As a friend of theirs he recorded this song and had his name added to the credits. He didn’t use verse 4 as it was controversial but Bill Danoff’s version is available on TH-cam.

Teacher: How old is the U.S. State of West Virginia?
Me : Older than the trees, and younger than the Mountains

😂
Answer: Not quite as old as Virginia itself.
West Virginia is a product of the cauldron of The American Civil War. Virginia passed an ordnance of secession and people in the western portions of the state were having none of it. The State of West Virginia was formed in 1861.
This should become our second national anthem. Such a beautiful song. So American.
@rangers199487 That's a good idea. It's even taught and played in schools in Europe. Your right it's a beautiful song.
Thats amazing. My Uncle went to College with John Denver here in the States@drjerry5389

Or the opposite. I only listen when I'm severely depressed

The days in the country where I spent my vacations in winter and summer, rural roads and mountains silhouetted by reddish sunsets are associated with my early childhood.
